Lunch in Kailua, O'ahu, Hawai'i... I had this place on my list of places to go. When I had some free time, I asked Donna if she wanted to join me. She was available... yay! Thanks, Donna! The Dish has a small, free parking lot. Inside, it's air-conditioned, clean, bright, and spacious. We were prompted to sit anywhere. I chose the corner - instead of the bar. Other tables were filled with customers. Today's menu included breakfast and plate lunches. Hawaiian food was also an option. I chose Hamburger Steak plate. It came with white rice and a scoop of macaroni salad. It was delicious! The brown gravy complimented the mushrooms and sweet onions well! The patties seemed to be homemade. The rice was on the drier, harder side. The macaroni was a bit mushy and the salad itself needed more flavor - maybe salt and pepper? Our server was busy waiting on everyone. We asked for takeout boxes because we couldn't finish. I walked over to her and gave her my credit card instead of waiting for her. She was pleasant and friendly! I would try the garlic chicken and Hawaiian food next.

The squid luau was great! When we walked in I wasn't sure if they were open because no one else was there and the staff didn't greet us but they said they were open when I asked and said to sit anywhere. It was really quiet, but we went in the early afternoon. There is a stage for live music in the evenings. There is outdoor and indoor seating, and the food was good for the price as well.

I really wanted to like this place, but the garlic chicken plate was a complete miss. The chicken was raw in the center, which is not only disappointing but unsafe. The breading had no flavor at all -- no garlic, no seasoning, no crisp, no glaze, nothing that matched what the dish was supposed to be. For the price, I expected at least a properly cooked meal with some taste. Unfortunately, this plate didn't deliver on any of that. I hope the kitchen tightens up its quality control because this was not acceptable. The mac salad was ok, so there's that.

Plenty of parking! Came here for lunch with friends and ordered the squid luau and Kalua pork, came with rice and Mac! So yum. Service is quick and they play live music at night. :) would come back here

    Squid luau is unreal good

The Dish is a great Hawaiian style restaurant serving authentic Hawaiian food (like squid luau and poke) and local favs like loco moco & Kauai sausage. You should come check out their delicious food and Hawaiian baseball memorabilia. We loved the hamburger steak, spicy ahi poke and Kauai style sausage musubi. Mahalo Kaaihue Ohana!

I was in the neighborhood and got into my car that was parked on the street. I looked up and noticed a sign I hadn't seen before. I looked them up on yelp and saw a few photos of the food so I decided to get back out of my car and check them out. I walked in and there were a bunch of tables and bar stools of patrons eating, drinking and watching the high school softball championships on their multiple TVs around the space. There had to be atleast 8 TVs. The friendly bartender said I could sit anywhere. There was a guy doing a sound check so I was looking forward to listening to the live music too. I was told he usually starts at 7 but he waited because a table of 8 and a bunch of other customers were all watching the softball game. I decided to go with the ahi katsu. The katsu had good flavor and the fish was moist. I liked the sauce on it and probably should've asked for more of the wasabi butter to dip the fish in. I liked their potato Mac salad too. Their rice was a little chewy though. I'll definitely be back to try the Hawaiian food next. Live music started at 8 and the guy was entertaining. Several customers got up and danced and sang along and everyone was having a good time. The bartender told me that they have music on Thursday and Friday evenings.

Aku poke very good but looked and tasted more like ahi!

First time here, Thursday night pretty crowded and live music, we sat outside where it wasn't so crowded or loud. Great service, was fast and friendly. Michelob ultra was the only draft beer, lots of other bottled or canned options. No complaints overall. Would come back to try the Hawaiian food. Check out this place that took over the Chinese restaurant. Has own parking lot and lots of street parking.

Being on the windward side, decided to try The Dish. They took over the location of a Chinese Restaurant. We were planning to dine in. Was a little confused. One door had a close sign and the other door displayed an open sign.. We entered the the door that said open. This door is for take out. They have a display case with their poke options. I noticed that there were people sitting in the dining room. I asked if it was available. The counter person said yes .Had to go out and enter the dinner room thru the other door. The same person waiting on us.I pointed out the close signage. She turned the neon sign to on and flipped the paper sign to open. Overall service was pleasant and laid back.I ordered a mixed plate which consisted of squid luau and chicken long rice. Wife had the panko crispy ahi. The squid luau was light on the coconut milk With a sprinkle of squid on top. The chicken long rice Had was flavorful and a good potion of chicken .The long rice was on the thicker side. Enjoy

This place has its own little parking, can fit about 8-ish cars but plenty of street parking. When we first got there on a Saturdayfor lunch, there were maybe 3 other tables being served, but when we leave it was getting fuller. We were told we could be seated anywhere. We ordered 2 beers, the Hawaiian Grand Slam, Crispy Pork Belly and Fries. The crispy pork belly wasn't crispy but loved their chili ponzu sauce that they drizzled on top. $22 is a little steep although it comes with 8 big pieces but they could cut them in half for a one-bite sized might be better. We had to use chopsticks to split them up. The grand slam is served on a school lunch platter in a porcelain form. They tasted good, nothing outstanding. The chicken long rice could use more work. Fries was an impulse order, crinkle cut, could be just a little bit more crispier. If we go back we would want to try their plate lunch. The decor is nice, very open. Ample of TVs. Lots of friends and family patroning the place. Family owned, their kids are hanging around, some help with service and cleaning. So cute to see!

We just had lunch from The Dish. We ordered Ahi katsu, garlic chicken, a poke bowl and marlin dip. Prices for each plate was reasonable. All were made super fresh and hot off the kitchen. Ahi katsu was my favorite. The fish was super moist and the outside crust was crunchy. The Poke was so fresh and flavorful. Loved it. Customer service was great. The girls were so patient and nice. This is my new fav to go place in Kailua.

Poke nachos and kalua pug nachos. Missing the pork belly which was so Ono. We also ordered truffle fries and plain fries.
    Michelle J.

Excellent service Ono food and nice cold ac inside. We decided last minute to celebrate our friend's birthday and wanted to be close to home. Yelp had a lot of good reviews for their food. We will definitely return. Emma took really good care of us all night long. It's bigger inside than it looks from outside lots of seats and a small bar. Regular tables and high top tables. Clean restrooms as well. They also have a parking lot.

Have gotten takeout a few times since the opening in early December 2025. They've now found their groove (and hours). Food is yummy, parking convenient, clean and bright despite also being a sports bar. Casual local vibe befitting the "BAB" Kailua. (I made that up = before A&B.) Tried so far: Garlic chicken: tasty, the side portion seems priced relatively low (not complaining) Squid luau: Improved to point of perfection Poke: spicy shrimp and sesame tako as poke bowl. Almost slurped it down, so good. Haven't had ahi yet. Laulau: legit Also like the little sides: pickled onion, lomi tomato (not really salmon). Sometimes they run out (lke the nachos), so be prepared to choose alternates. Check out their Instagram but be aware that there's another The Dish in Honolulu that's entirely a different restaurant. Be sure it says Kailua.

Multiple screens make it so there is not a bad seat in the house. We also hoped to find a place with more of a "neighborhood/locals" energy to chill and relax our tired dogs (feet) in...and also, if it wasn't asking too much, hoped that it would have a fun vibe. (*Check those criteria off). "Icing on the cake", for us would be if the location had decent food. (Check that one off and put an exclamation point behind it--as the nachos we had were, "Fire".) As fate would have it, a lucky break was to be had as we walked in to the very-full bar. There, before us, were two stools at the bar (*the last remaining spots in the place) and they happened to be open. Side note: The bar has a speak-easy attached to it, and one day, we are gonna try it. Going there has been mentioned a few times when we have chatted with locals and tourists regarding memorable and unique things to do. Our servers were pleasant and accommodating despite the fact that the place was "choke widd plenty-kine cust-a'mah" (local pidgin for, full of customers). It's a hard balancing act to make patrons feel welcomed, but also not leave other thirsty tables waiting for too long. The two pretty blondes working that afternoon did a fantastic job at this. My seasonal sour beer hit all the right notes, and my wife seemed to enjoy her less exotic tap beer (Blue moon with an orange slice--served ice cold). There is a ton of beers to choose from here. Lighting in the Kailua Tavern is kinda darkish (not a problem, as I like me a dark bar sometimes). The locals were very-welcoming. One guy offered his table to us when he noticed our food had arrived and our plates were a bit pinned in. Also, anyone who happened to be sitting near us immediately engaged in friendly banter about the games. One guy of Tongan decent, who was probably 6'5" and had muscles piled-on to his massive frame came over and leaned in very close to ask, "Hey DEN, Bradah, YOU MIND FOR IF I GO DANCE WICH YOU DATE?" (*That didn't happen, I thought channeling a classic moment from the bar-scene in, Animal House, would be funny...but like the Toronto Blue Jays in the late innings of last night's game, "Swing and a miss". ) The Kailua Town Tavern was the opposite of a swing and a miss for us. It was fun and a good place to "chill"; the vibe was what we had hoped for; and of special note were the steak strips on the nachos, as they were superb.

This was 30 min after we ordered it. No luck finding anyone who would speak with us. We left the pub area and walked over to the outside walk up area. We were ignored there as well by no less than 4 waitstaff, until a nice girl asked if she could help us. We pointed at the food sitting in open containers in the open air, and asked if we could please have our food. She closed the lids and handed it to us. We got back home and hubby enjoyed his wings.
