Kailua Tavern - Outside sign... not hard to find - Sports Bars Near Me - Kailua, Hawaii

Exactly perfect for what we were looking for. First and foremost on the list for our search, was we hoped to find a place that had televised sports (both Monday Night Football and the World Series were on--but remember, this is Hawaii--way-out in the Pacific, so live-games come on in the afternoon or even earlier). Multiple screens make it so there is not a bad seat in the house. We also hoped to find a place with more of a "neighborhood/locals" energy to chill and relax our tired dogs (feet) in...and also, if it wasn't asking too much, hoped that it would have a fun vibe. (*Check those criteria off). "Icing on the cake", for us would be if the location had decent food. (Check that one off and put an exclamation point behind it--as the nachos we had were, "Fire".) As fate would have it, a lucky break was to be had as we walked in to the very-full bar. There, before us, were two stools at the bar (*the last remaining spots in the place) and they happened to be open. Side note: The bar has a speak-easy attached to it, and one day, we are gonna try it. Going there has been mentioned a few times when we have chatted with locals and tourists regarding memorable and unique things to do. Our servers were pleasant and accommodating despite the fact that the place was "choke widd plenty-kine cust-a'mah" (local pidgin for, full of customers). It's a hard balancing act to make patrons feel welcomed, but also not leave other thirsty tables waiting for too long. The two pretty blondes working that afternoon did a fantastic job at this. My seasonal sour beer hit all the right notes, and my wife seemed to enjoy her less exotic tap beer (Blue moon with an orange slice--served ice cold). There is a ton of beers to choose from here. Lighting in the Kailua Tavern is kinda darkish (not a problem, as I like me a dark bar sometimes). The locals were very-welcoming. One guy offered his table to us when he noticed our food had arrived and our plates were a bit pinned in. Also, anyone who happened to be sitting near us immediately engaged in friendly banter about the games. One guy of Tongan decent, who was probably 6'5" and had muscles piled-on to his massive frame came over and leaned in very close to ask, "Hey DEN, Bradah, YOU MIND FOR IF I GO DANCE WICH YOU DATE?" (*That didn't happen, I thought channeling a classic moment from the bar-scene in, Animal House, would be funny...but like the Toronto Blue Jays in the late innings of last night's game, "Swing and a miss". ) The Kailua Town Tavern was the opposite of a swing and a miss for us. It was fun and a good place to "chill"; the vibe was what we had hoped for; and of special note were the steak strips on the nachos, as they were superb. read more

Had amazing beer battered fish tacos! I would recommend. Service was excellent but we went 5-7 pm and it was a nice crowd, nothing crazy.

Finally! A fresh new spacious, cool vibe restaurant has arrived here in Waikiki!! Our family stumbled into Earls only few weeks ago and have eaten lunch there twice since! Goes without saying they not only captured the layed back Aloha spirit but the lunch menu & early afternoon happy hour offers best sushi fo real! Nothing skimpy about their fresh REAL crab - sushi !! Supa Ono! Staff so friendly too, ask for Giselle and you'll have a new friend for Eva! We've only eaten there daytime, the evening menu looks to be on pricey side, but tempting!! I can envision a Balcony seats anniversary dinner in my future! Welcome Earls!! read more

Chill "hole in the wall" type spot with good, reasonable drinks and friendly staff. We stopped in for a couple drinks with friends after dinner on a Saturday night around 8ish and it was about half full. Within 30 min the place was packed. First time at Kailua Tavern. Went lunch time. Unfortunately or fortunately there is not a food menu, as this is a straight up bar. They have all kinds of alcoholic drinks, and you can buy chips from.behund.the bar. They do encourage you to hit the Taco Bell or Jack In The Box that are conveniently located across the street. We stopped by at 1 PM hoping for some lunch and to play some pool. There were already locals and regulars hanging out at the bar and the bartender pointed out that this was BYOF (bring your own food). He and the other folks were all helpful and quickly exchanged dollars for quarters. Atmosphere and ambiance is total dive bar with a hint of sketchy, but we will certainly be back for more rounds of pool and for the opportunity to try some of the local grinds around Kailua Tavern. read more

Some of the regulars are old, rasict, homophobic men that repeatedly insulted my friends and called them slurs. The staff said this happens often but they do nothing about it and were "sorry, it just happens". This place is divey, dirty and now full of rowdy 20 something year olds. There's no food and the karaoke machine only works sometimes. The bartendresses are great. Very engaging and that pretty local girl can sure make a good drink. If you end up there, enjoy a few drinks and tip good. The staff is legit the best thing about this place. I won't be going back anytime soon. The vibe is off nowadays. Last time we went the bartendress had to kid out a bunch of teenagers who thought they could sneak a drink. If you like a traditional dive bar, but by the beach this it. The people were nice and and the drinks were exactly like our local dive back home. Simple and strong like most people like them. If you're in the area I would recommend stopping in for one or a few. read more

Bobbi was the best!! To be TOTALLY honest, we definitely walked in and everyone thought we were lost. We were the youngest people in the bar by about 40 years and were the only females in the crowd. Everyone was super friendly and Bobbi took great care of us. Their bloody mary's were good (build your own) and the prices were unbeatable! Perfect little small town dive bar. read more

The owner is super cheap and needs to update the bar to stay on top of the game. It's tough to see a good bar that's been around go down because of poor owner ship. The bartenders are absolutely amazing and need to get more recognition. This place is where locals go so just be aware that its not a chain restaurant with tourists, but that only means its 10x better than any other spot around town! They have karaoke (which the one bartender is phenomenal at), pool tables, and darts. It is a real down home feel and that is probably why I love it so much. Drink prices are average and the vibe is perfect. There is never a problem getting a seat and you can hear your friends during a conversation. I think as I get older I am beginning to appreciate the smaller things when I am out at a bar with my friends (hearing them and getting a good drink). There is bike parking and a place to lock up your bike, along with a few spots in the parking lot off the main street, but your best bet is street parking. What are you waiting for? So I have to say that I am a newbie at this yelp thing. But I've been at the establishment a few times and enjoy myself due to the friendly staff and the great drinks. I am definitely a returning customer but I rarely attend bars infact the tavern is the only place I am willing to go to to relax and calm down the stress of the work week. But it's difficult to invite my coworkers when the place can be smelly from the restroom, or the look of the restrooms is like the pipes been there since the 50"s. Hey I get it, these are not simple fixes and it will cost some money. But I'll be honest, the few time I've been there looks like this place can afford the upgrades. I mean the karaoke is expensive, 2 bucks a song and the mics honestly suck!! It cuts out and the sound is not consistent. The song book is out of order and difficult to find a song. I am not one to care or give a crap, but this can be a great place. Looks like it's just me and my partner until they make some changes. Again great bartenders, so much aloha and thats difficult to find in this day and age. Having a menu for food would be great. So negatives are smells bad, karaoke sucks, books for songs suck, food would be good. The positives, great drinks even better staff!! read more

Awesome bar ! Walked in to a friendly guy bartender. Who helped me immediately as I walked in . It was about 11pm bar was full, karaoke was playing and everyone having a great time ! This Bar is clean and nice! The bathrooms were super clean which you hardly see now days at 11pm! Drink prices are great ! Nice local bar if you want to have a great time. If you need a place to sing your heart out this is the place to go. Get a couple drinks and sing some songs. The place is kept very clean and the bathrooms are nice. However I wish they had more than one person working and the drinks a little pricy. I also wish there was a wider variety of drinks. read more

I hesitantly made this account due to the soul purpose I couldn't get the size of the rats coming from the ceiling out of my head. I love hole in the wall places and hate that the internet can access and over crowd amazing places. But this place, if it wasn't for the two bartenders on Friday night my girlfriends and I would have not returned with our spouses on Saturday night. Maybe we shouldn't have had, some elder lady smacked my husband for no apparent reason across the head (she was intoxicated). Where on earth is the security here? The male bartender gradually handled things nicely and told the lady to leave. This place is amazing, karaoke, pool and darts. The service amazingly fast on Friday night. But Saturday was just too much. Whoever the owner/manger is really needs to kick it up a notch or care for the place. read more
