Bad news...this coffee company sells coffee by the pound not lattes (hence the name). Good news... they sell drip coffee for $2.00 + tax. What a deal! This family owned shop has been roasting beans locally since 1972 and focuses on helping customers brew excellent coffee at home rather than serving coffee drinks on premises. According to the store manager, Mr. Anderson occasionally comes into the store. The selection of freshly roasted beans is rather larger, with store favorites like Guatemala Antiqua, Dark Sumatra and Arabian Mocha cited as most popular. Coffee cost on average $19 per pound. In addition to coffee, the store carries loose leaf teas, mugs, candy, cards, coffee pot sweaters, brewing equipment, and small other gift items, to name just a few items. I was totally and completely enamored with this store. They had so many trinkets and interesting items, you literally could peruse for hours. Captivating environment...Loved it...

Based on financial audits performed by my concerned wife on my coffee drinking habit, I spend somewhere in the neighborhood of $150-$200 a month on coffee. That equates to approximately $2,000 per year, which is about the per capita GDP of Bangladesh. Now that I have established some minimum credibility in the area of coffee-consumption, allow me to state some opinions. Cuvee Coffee is not only clearly the best coffee roaster in the Austin area. Cuvee coffee is one of greatest craft coffee roasters in Texas, the United States, or, perhaps, the world. The espresso pulled from Cuvee beans is orders of magnitude better than just about anything else out there. Basically, the coffee shops that serve Cuvee have bad ass drinks while the competition begins to taste undrinkable in comparison. If you have any doubt, go to Starbucks and order a simple espresso-first drink like a double macchiato. Then, go to a Cuvee-based shop (like Caffe Medici, Patika, Caffe Yolly, or Houndstooth) and order the same thing. Cuvee has a great thing brewing in our backyard, and I enthusiastically throw my meaningless five stars to them for enriching and elevating the beverage that is so important to me.

I finally made the pilgrimmage to Cuvee on a recent relaxing day. I talked with Hannah, the receptionist, and scheduled a visit on a Friday. Typically, tours are given several times a week, leaving Fridays for staff-meetings. I got lucky because Cuvee is soon changing their tours to once a month with periodic cuppings, or coffee tastings. I had the pleasure of talking with one of Cuvee's two coffee roasters, Logan. For almost an hour, he talked me through the life of the beans: how they are received, roasted, and bagged. He answered every question that I had, even the stupid ones, with courtesy and genuine passion. After discussing the throughput process with Logan, I was taken to Lorenzo, master barista. He talked me through the complex process of brewing and all the factors involved. I was lucky enough to have a comparison cupping in addition to Lorenzo's thoughtful short class. Located inside Austin Car Wash, it's a small, cozy, and highly welcoming spot. Their menu is excellent, featuring about six signature lattes, matcha, dirty chais, and cold brews. Since it was our first visit, the server patiently guided us through the options. I ordered the vanilla bean latte, and my husband got a matcha. Both drinks were absolutely perfect in taste and sweetness! There was a tiny mix-up where my husband received a regular matcha instead of the lavender matcha he ordered, but it tasted so good we didn't mind at all. Mistakes happen, and the great service more than made up for it.

But I tried my 3rd package of Little City coffee, (shipped from this address on their website) and though good coffee, it is simply not a dark enough roast for my espresso. I tried Messenger Espresso the first time, many months ago and was underwhelmed. The beans were just not dark enough, shiny enough nor oily enough for the sort of espresso shot I like to pull. They made perfectly passable drip coffee in a pour-over, but I am a 99% espresso guy. Recently I took advantage of a 20% discount and rapid delivery (next day! Arrived on Monday, ordered Sunday!) to try the two darkest roasts offered, Grackle and Republic. Again, passable drip coffees, but not able to produce the thick rich crema and distinctive oily mouthfeel and toasted flavor notes I was looking for. Great fast to the door delivery and good prices (though for a 12oz package, compare carefully) and as I noted, pretty good coffee, but I will return to the Italian espresso (occasionally mixed 75/25 with French Roast) from my usual roaster Anderson's to feed my Gaggia Classic Pro.

Don't let the location fool you, when you walk into this warehouse looking shop, inside has some of the FINEST coffee you can buy. Joel's good buddies with all the best plantations and Brazil and prides himself on having first choice on all the BEST harvested coffees from these plantations. If you've had coffee at Spiderhouse, Uchi, Torchy's, and many other places around town, there's a good chance they're sources from Casa Brasil. Basically, if you like making coffee at home and not paying a premium for coffee at these shops/restaurants, you can order directly from Joel. They roast upon order so you definitely get the beans at it's freshest. The bags they come in are all hand-painted too. If you're not wanting to order from Joel or make a drive down south, you can find their coffee at your local Central Market. But not so terrible that I would never come back. The staff is really nice and attentive, and they have delicious pastries near the front of the bar as well. There is plenty of seating and charging outlets so you can continue to use your computer, or tablet as needed. It's also in a really cool location with pretty art outside. My recommendation to the staff would be to amplify the syrup flavoring just a tiny bit more on their special drinks. Other than that things are great!
