Wow! I thought it was closed. It really doesn't have lights but I decided to stop and check it out. I'm glad I did. This is an awesome little place full of records, dvd, cds, and more! The hours on here are accurate, so come check it out. The place smells old so wear a mask if you don't like that. I love the musky old vintage smell when I'm in these kinds of stores, it really elevates the experience in all senses. They have hand sanitizer around as well. The staff was super cool and friendly. They let me take pictures and just hang around. It's definitely a museum feel. They also have new vinyl records too. Posters as well. Their prices seem fair and reasonable. If you're the one that loves to have physical copies of the music and dvds and such, definitely a place to come. read more

Hubs and I had our first (and last) visit on 2/24 around 2pm. It was pretty busy and we were the only black people there. About 5 or so minutes into our visit we realized we were being followed around the store. We continued shopping and waited to make sure. We confirmed it when the gentleman aggressively pushed the records to the back of the box 10 seconds after we finished looking. We tried to brush it off but every time we looked up, he was a foot away sighing and shuffling the records we touched. He only did it to us. The only thing missing was him yelling, "Hurry up and buy!" Smh. We got our 4 albums ($125) and left. I was so hurt I called the store 10 min later. The older white guy with curly gray hair said he remembered us because we were "one of the nice ones." That didn't help. As I calmly explained he became defensive and told us what we experienced didn't happen. He said that "they have issues with people taking albums in the back room." I never went back there and my husband read the THREE signs and understood. I continued with more details and said he only did it to us -- the only black people in the entire store. His reply? "Sorry you perceived it that way." Wow. In 2024, no less. So yea. Never going back. read more

One of the most organized disorganized record stores I've ever been in. This place is a real dig. Everything is alphabetized, but they have rock mixed in with soul (two completely opposite genres that should never be mixed). Also this store is very pricey. I found a few records that caught my interest, but every record I was finding over $8, I would look up online and see that it's cheaper even with shipping. For example this record I attached photos of, they wanted $50 for it when it's online for $15. That's only one example. The entire store is like this, and it made it tough to make a purchase. They have some boxes on a table in the back full of $5 records (poor selection), but they're a mix of all genres (again a dig). Why not have a $5 box for each genre? Is that too difficult to do? Also, if you go to look at records in the backrooms, they will take your records from you (store policy apparently). I'm not sure the purpose of this? Explain how someone in a tshirt and basketball shorts can steal a stack of records? If you guys are that paranoid, you should get cameras. This record store had a great selection of vinyl records, CDs, and cassette tapes. I also liked the posters and how the store was decorated. Unfortunately, I didn't like the microaggressions I received from two of the employees. And based on some of these other reviews from Yelp and Google, it seems like this isn't the first time the employees have done this, especially to other customers of color. read more

I've never seen a music store with more music (CD's, vinyl, cassettes - DVD's - maybe more) that is as less organized than any record I have ever seen. There's multiple rooms of somewhat categorized music that's extremely difficult to peruse, search, or even flip through. I saw a CD soon after I started going through the rows and a few minutes later couldn't not find it again to save my life. *People would literally buy more and spend more money here if they were to alphabetize and organize their music.* A perfect example is that I saw the same album located in five different places through the store. Picture rows of cardboard boxes vaguely grouped by genre and largely out of order. That's Fantasyland. Another issue I have is on average their products are fairly shoddy. Out of any stack of ten albums I'd say you could expect covers to be dusty or scratched, cases in various conditions and discs often in questionable condition. I picked up several albums of interest and set all too many back down due to being in too poor a condition. I try to stay on the Very Good or Like New level whenever possible and had trouble finding things to buy here for this reason as well as the whole lack of order issue I previously mentioned. Too many of the boxes are marked as New Arrivals which are full of unrelated and randomly scattered music. I wouldn't waste my time to go back. read more

The selection was great, but they don't properly vet their merchandise. I bought my wife a copy of what was marked as a 2nd press of an old Rolling Stones 10" for quite a bit of money. It was in a plastic sleeve, taped shut, with a sticker saying not to open. I asked the guy working if he was sure it was authentic, and he said he was as sure as he could be. Upon getting back to Michigan, I've learned it is 100% a counterfeit bootleg of the press, which would have been easy to tell by checking the run-out grooves. Be careful here, and check what you are buying carefully. Insist on having them open up a package if you are unsure, and don't let them rush you as you inspect it. I don't believe they did this intentionally, but it never should have happened in the first place, especially if they felt confident enough to mark this as a "2nd pressing." Fantasyland is an Atlanta staple with lots of character (truly an old, vintage record shop) with an impressive collection across the genres. I stop here every time I'm in ATL and have definitely spent over $500. They have things that you simply don't find at other places (old Zeppelin demos, rare pressings, soundtracks galore, and the BEST poster collection anywhere in Atlanta...bar none). I can't speak highly enough of the staff and the sheer volume of records they have. A must-visit, especially if classic rock or 60s-90s generally is your vibe. However there are several things to look out for. First, organization. There are simply too many records here, but this has already been discussed I'll leave it at that. Second: BOOTLEGS! I don't know if it's a lack of diligence or dishonest labeling but one almost found myself spending lots of money on rare records only to find out they are bootlegs (they were selling a Tool record for $50 today that was never actually released on vinyl). Lastly, I wish they work focus on variety a bit more w/r/t metal, grunge, alternative, etc. They do a good job of with new vinyl but they're metal section is pretty much 2 bins while they're soundtrack/vocalist sections are huge. I understand they are trying to do the most with the space that they have - but I would totally blow the place up and start over with how they have it organized. It's tight and crowded with no real flow. It's almost more like going through an estate sale than a fun record shopping experience. And not real fault of their own, since most places are the same, but the metal selection was severely lacking and there were metal and punk titles mixed in with other genres. BUYER BEWARE! I bought music here on and off for over 25 years, but never again. I am a CD holdout. While others embrace or re-embrace vinyl or flock to downloads and streaming, I still prefer CDs and feel they offer more bang for music buck than any other option, especially used. I have over 2,300 discs in my collection. Unfortunately, as my collection has grown and the general public abandons CD, the selection at Fantasyland has grown increasingly static. The CD inventory simply doesn't turn over like it used to and much of what I find there that I like I all ready own. I get that, but I've still enjoyed popping into Fantasyland and hunting for some obscurity or new discovery that I may have overlooked even though I'm buying less and searching harder. I've generally ended up picking up about 1-2 discs from them per month. I don't especially care what a used disc looks like as long as it plays all the way through without skips and I had never, ever had a problem at Fantasyland until my last visit. I bought a fairly obscure solo album by Jon Anderson of Yes and headed to my car with it. My car stereo is nothing fancy, but it does the job. However, the disc had a major skip less than a minute into the first track. I took the disc out and saw a couple of gouges in the playing area that were likely the cause. So less than an hour after purchasing this CD I head back to Fantasyland to ask for my $7 back. I felt bad about it, but a disc that skips like that is simply no good to me. Mark, who has worked there as long as I've been going there, cleaned the disc and tried it in the store player and it played OK so I agreed to try it again. However, the flaw was still there in my car so I made an audio recording of the skip on my phone as evidence and went back in again. Mark very graciously gave me my money back. Unfortunately, Andy, the owner, decided to seize this opportunity to be bitter and snippy. He told me very haughtily not to ever expect a refund again unless it skipped in the store player when this was the first time I've EVER brought anything back. I replied that I couldn't believe he was giving me grief over a $7.00 CD I had bought less than an hour ago when I'd been coming there for so long. He tried to give me some sort of lame guilt trip over not buying enough and then told me I needed to get a decent CD player. Words were exchanged that are not suitable for reproduction on a "family" site and I am done with Fantasyland. I'm sorry to say that Andy's approach to "customer service" is not that of a canny businessman. It's not as if I requested special treatment above and beyond what I'd expect from any retail outlet. Why should I accept store credit (as Andy implies I should have done in his comment below) and not my cash back when the defective item had been in my possession for less than an hour? Just be warned because if a music fanatic like me can get treated like that after so many years of shopping there, then the general public probably has absolutely no shot if you happen to have a problem with something you purchase at Fantasyland. People should also be warned that they sometimes sell burned CD-Rs as "used" discs and also sell concert recordings burned onto CD-R for big $$ that are swapped for free on sites like dimeadozen.org and offered to members on the condition that they NOT be sold. I love the feeling of stumbling on a place and getting lost for hours. Its very rare that I actually remember how much I love second hand record stores, and when I do come across a gem (like FantasyLand) I can spend hours sifting through dusty records and out of date media - its very zen, right up there with watching Antiques Roadshow. Fantasyland is exactly what a used record store should be: no frills, no fuss... just piles and piles of music, great prices, and like minded patrons (most of whom look like they fell asleep in the seventies and just woke up last week). After a few minutes of browsing through the extensive collection of used LPs I found myself asking why I had not come in sooner. They have a huge selection of used LP's in all sorts of genres and it is very well organized. I have been to several other shops in and outside of Atlanta where you spend hours digging through bins that are barely organized by genre, let alone alphabetically. Not the case at Fantasyland and not only are they organized by genre and alphabetically, all the vinyl records I looked at had been cleaned and were in great condition. The prices were very reasonable too. They have some new records too as well as a ton of used CD's, cassettes, and posters. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable if you need them to be, but otherwise they leave you alone to browse. If you love music you have to come check this place out. Great place to find classic, vintage vinyl at a good price. Their prices are more than fair. Just go in there and poke around. I go about every other week and just poke around for about 30-45 minutes. The staff leaves you alone but will answer any question. It's nice to find a place where the vinyl actually outnumbers the CDs! I picked up a rare Neville Brothers live album for 5 bucks last week and was a happy camper! I'll continue to pop in every other week to see what kind of gems I can unearth in that place. They also sell stuff like old ticket stubs, buttons, tshirts and old magazines. Stop by here on a Sunday on your way home from brunch at Chick-Fil-A. Just kidding. Like Chick-Fil-A, Fantasyland is closed on Sundays. Fantasyland's fortes are vinyl, collectible vinyl, "public performance" CDs, DVD movies, and used magazines. Come here for vinyl before you go anywhere else. Used CD selection has slipped, except for "public performance" recordings, and there are no new CDs. The owners' preferences in used CD inventory tend towards classic and indie rock (especially British music), jazz and R & B. Last time I checked, they carried some obsolete media: VHS tapes and 8-track and cassette tapes. They also carry a selection of T-shirts. read more

I have absolutely no idea what the hell that means but if it's retro-tainment you're looking for here's your place. I am one of those guys afflicted with "vinylphilia." In this age of mp3s, mp4s, and ipods(ugh) I'm glad there are places like Fantasyland which cater to nonconformist freaks like me. Although it can be somewhat confusingly cataloged(i.e. the Byrds being listed in the Oldies section), this place has a ginormous selection of vinyl in varying condition. I found the Peter Gabriel album I'd been looking for in seconds however. This place has a good classic to modern rock section and a huge jazz and classical selection. The only genre I felt under represented was country. Only three measly little bins all by their lonesome behind the sale table in the back of the store. Hell, that's a good idea for a country song in and of itself. In addition to vinyl the store has a huge collection of cds, dvds, rocktastic posters and magazines. I can't go without mentioning the huge variety of pre-owned adult videos(big boobs, bigger hair) and magazines(gross!). The staff is cool but I think you have to throw something at them for assistance, not that I needed any. Yesterday, I went here for the first time. The music collection was amazing however the environment and vibe felt off. To be very honest, the vibe felt a bit racial mixed with a touch of prejudice. As a black man, I know what it feels like to be rushed out of a store because they don't want me there and this was the feeling I got here. Spent $15 on cd's but I won't be returning to spend anymore money here. I told the owner, "I aspire to have my own store one day" and he told me "Well work hard and you may have it". Work hard? This is what I had in mind when searching for a local record store. I'm still kind of new to Atlanta and always had a hometown record store to go into once a month and buy some new LPs. They had a decent selection, old and new. They had everything from 1950s to now. Everything seemed to be in order, you dont really need to ask where anything is, just go hunt. I guess they just started selling new vinyl, but most of the stock is all used. I was looking for older stuff, but I still ended up getting a few new ones. My only complaint is that some quasi-rare LPs are a little pricey. Some I already owned and I know I didn't pay that when I got it. More often than not, eBay is changing the normal selling price of an LP. But, that isn't the store's fault, just the current state of affairs. The fun of hunting down records is finding that deal anyways. It's pretty convenient getting there and they have a parking garage next door. I think I will definitely frequent this place. I like to support the local record business as much as I can. I get a good feeling from this one. They aren't trying to rip off the person that doesn't know better. read more

I've visited this store a few times in the past and both bought and sold items here. And steadily the service has declined. Went in today to get their opinion on a piece of vinyl I was researching for a friend. First I was told that I could get $1 for it, IF they could use it. Ok, fine. Then I showed it to the other manager working there and was told that it had too many scratches for them. Also fine. But he barely even looked me in the eye, was extremely dismissive and moved right along to the next customer. Fine, no problem. You wanna treat your potential customers like that? Be my guest. Fantasyland is amazing! They have so much stuff it will make your head spin. New and used CDs, Vinyl, DVDs, old comic books, all the posters on the wall are for sale, and I even found some KISS Army action figures in original packaging! Don't judge me. Spend the day there and you can find so many cool hidden treasures. It sort of reminds me of the record store I used to go to in college, except without the stereotypically condescending music snobs. That's right, the guys that work here are actually really nice and extremely helpful. Who would have thought that would be possible at a cool neighborhood record store? Prices are cheap and there's a parking garage right next door. Everyone should lose themselves searching through boxes of Purple Rain and The Cramps and Miles Davis and The Replacements at least once a month or so; it's good for the soul. I went to this location for the first time yesterday and was mostly impressed. The selection was pretty good even though the prices seemed $1-$3 dollars high on most things (maybe due to rent in Buckhead? or that he's a power seller on Ebay) so no "super deals" to be found, but not wildly over priced either. The store does need a little TLC as some of the table looked like they were about to collapse under the weight of the records and the organization of the records in the categories needs a little work. But yeah, I get it, it's a record store and that's what I should expect I guess.. Service was great and we will be going back. read more

Fantasyland was my favorite haunt during high school in the 80's and it hasn't changed a bit over the years. Or course, vinyl is their forte but I invariably find other items that I must have - t-shirts, pins, posters, 45s, vintage fan mags, etc., etc. In fact, just the other day, I found a 688 t-shirt that lists all of the bands that played during the heyday of this Atlanta music institution. Guess what? Fantasyland was there before and after the club closed and remains a strong anchor for Atlanta's music scene. An added bonus is that I even saw Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes! In contrast to other reviewers' opinions of the staff, I prefer the approach of the sales clerks and resent someone following me around "being helpful" in others stores. I appreciate that they are available to answer my questions but otherwise leave me alone to savor the experience. By the way - you will never find another staff more knowledgeable about music of every genre. They are brilliant! read more

My first visit to Fantasyland was back in August of 1980 (the original location on Peachtree Street)... and to this day, whenever I'm in ATL, I ALWAYS make this one of my first visits. I have so many great memories over the years with Mark and Mr. Folio, remembering the many LPs I've purchased over time and the many hours I've spent in their shop. If you're looking to sell your vinyl, you won't get a better deal; they are as fair as they come. There's even free parking just around the corner. In over half a century of record collecting, if there's a better record shop around, I've yet to see it. read more

A long-time problem I've had with Fantasyland for a least the last couple of decades is timing... they're hardly ever open when I happen to be in Atlanta, so I'm a dozen or so visits behind Wuxtry, Wax-N-Fax, and so on. But, I've found some things here that I never have anywhere else, such as (don't tell a soul) "Renaldo & Clara" on VHS, back around 1990, 12 years after waiting to see see it. Being VHS, one of the tapes has long-since self-destructed, so I hope to someday catch Fantasyland open again for perhaps a DVD copy of this... and just to be able to browse around the shop again. read more

Must goto place for record collector of any genre... This only few record stores that carries tones of vinyls and cd and cassettes but is the cheapest of them all. Its hard to find good CLEAN records for $3-$5 per say. Sometimes you get the original copy instead of promotion copy or reprints. Marc (manager) is super cool and very helpful too.
