Yes they have a great selection of popular new movies, but they also have the extremely niche films- regardless if it's foreign, culty, old, etc- they have it. How can Videodrome be rated anything less than 5 stars when they're one of a kind! They're the best video rental place in all of Atlanta because- is there any other place to rent from? They have an extremely extensive collection of all different movies and shows from anywhere in the world (for the most part). This is such a cool shop to stop in and look around. They also sell posters and other little gifts for your movie loving friends. Anyway, we recently donated several DVDs and VHS tapes to them and you should too! They also take DVD, Blueray and VHS players if i'm remembering correctly. Why throw it in the garbage or donate it when it will probably get way more use with Videodrome!! read more

This is a must visit for everyone, from causal movie watchers to full on film bros. It's such a fun store to browse in for hours. And at $5/week to rent a movie, it's pretty reasonably priced too! I highly recommend visiting if you're a nostalgia junkie or someone who wants to relive the good old days of Blockbuster, but ~small business style~. The folks here are super nice as well. I came in to return a DVD and told them it didn't work. Turns out it was because it wasn't compatible with my DVD player, not because there was a problem with the DVD itself. I know most if not all DVD outlets probably are independent these days but Videodrome was independent when Blockbuster was everywhere. - huge selection - very eclectic selection. You'll see stuff you remember from your drug-addled youth as well as stuff you probably should have watched during your drug-addled youth but were too drug-addled to make it out your front door. - organized by director, genre, country, as well the usual sorting. Same musty smell, familiar process of renting videos (some of you kids may never experience such joys), and tons of international selection across all genres. What I love about Videodrome is that it feels like a comic book shop filled with DVDs instead of magazines and books. The dudes that run the joint are film buffs and they carry some of the best films you simply cannot squeeze out of a DVD vending machine. Love their lengthy collection of Miyazaki films and large selection of Indie films. We checked out No Country For Old Men upon our recent visit. An Atlanta staple of movie rental, outside the red-enveloped freeway of Netflix and their ilk. Videodrome has been around forever, and is located right in the heart of midtown. Their collection of independent and foreign film is impressive and replete. From midnite movie to documentary to splatter to the latest boxset of perverted Anime, you can always find something worth renting that no other venue has. Their selections are grouped into genre, and then under genre, often, by director (from Altman to Argento to Gilliam to Bunuel and on and on and on), so it's easy to shop by association. If you're looking to snatch up one of 40 copies of the newest vehicle produced so ladies can look at Jake Gyllenhaal, you're going to have to hurry, because they don't overstock the big sellers. It's first come first served Kool Keith style. But even when I've been there looking for something specific and found it missing, there's always been something else I had forgotten or didn't know about to fill its place. A very cool video rental store that stocks most mainstream new releases, but what sets this place apart are all the different titles they carry. Some examples include a lot of critically acclaimed independent films and Oscar-nominated foreign language films. They also have sections devoted to certain countries, including Hong Kong, Korea, Norway, and Poland. They carry a lot of Asian horror and 1960s Japanese biker girl gang movies. Very unique. A small card is inserted into a plastic holder pasted the cover of each DVD. In order to rent a movie, just remove its card and take it to the front desk and they'll give you the disc - just like checking out a book from the library in the old days (I'm not sure how you check out a book at the library these days since I haven't been in years). Rentals are $3.78 for the first three nights and $1 for each night thereafter. Employees are friendly and knowledgeable. read more

Sure Netflix can get you what you want, but one day you might be feeling like watching one movie, then the next day not so much. This is where Videodrome comes in. If you want a quick fix and you know Blockbuster is not carrying it, this is the place to go. They have a great selection of films- from your standard blockbusters, to foreign hits, to indie films, etc. I will give you a warning that might only apply to me.... I am terrible about returning movies. In fact, I am notorious around the ATL, with many stores, for taking DVD's back a year later. Videodrome ups the cool quotient on this block. I remember first moving here, and it certainly sticks out in my mind as this little squat building with a huge graphic painted on the side. It's for hardcore movie-ophiles, wannabes, and people looking to impress a date with their hippe-than-thou (blockbuster) which is right up the street. You come here, of course, for the movies, but you can also come here for the possibility of the conversation you'll have with a fellow moviebuff as you're both in the "German Drama" section. read more

I enjoy tangible experiences. I miss the card catalog, flipping for "crustacean" as a keyword but stopping at "Croatia" along the way. Fondling card stock was an intimate adventure, not instant digital gratification. The same goes for movie rentals. Now that I've heavily used Netflix for more than 5 years, I miss traipsing into Blockbuster with my big sister and taking an hour to agree on a movie. Netflix's instant queue sucks, and I haven't felt like watching my snail mailed film (The Godfather) for the past month it's been sitting on my couch arm. Like music, I'll choose a movie based on my fleeting mood. Videodrome seems to be one of the last movie rental stores standing. It is dusty and snobby and quirky and everything else a Poncey-Highland shop should be. While scanning the French section for Ponette, a customer might discover Fat Girl, or a trip to the drama section might convince one to give To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday a chance. Yesterday I yearned for Coal Miner's Daughter, and Videodrome held it for me. If you don't want to go to Fist City, don't close Videodrome down. read more

Videodrome is incredibly pretentious. But that's actually a great thing when it comes to video stores. The staff is fairly knowledgeable and the selection is great for such a small store. I come here maybe every 3 months the past 1.5 years? My bf loves this place - so he probably knows more, but from my view - it's awesome! They literally have every movie I feel like. If I'm wrong, sorry! When I do come here, I look for certain DVDs. I'm not a huge movie buff, but if you are - GO! Worth a visit. My bf is a movie guy so he frequents here more than me. The folks here are really nice and very helpful. I've never had a bad time here. It's also walkable distance from some bars/gas station and etc - so if it's a literally a 'pick up a movie after dinner/drinking hours + get {more} beer from the gas station' kind of night then yes, it will fit the bill. Date night material :) I just wish it had better parking - but there's street parking if you drive past it - be patient! So, eh, I can't knock off stars for that. There is a very good reason why 99% of video rental places have gone out of business, but in the Age of Netflix, Videodrome has thrived. They are amazing. I'll list the 3 biggest reasons why. 1. They have good taste. They organize their collections according to director, genre, country, etc.--everything from Japanese films, anime (yes, its own section), Wes Anderson, and even Asian Sex and Splatter if you're into that. When I want to ask for recommendations on a really *good* film, or if I'm just asking their opinion on something that catches my eye, I enjoy talking with and listening to them about it. They are thoughtful, intelligent, and very well-versed in the subject matter. 2. They are about as "neighborhoody" as it gets. The local area has really gotten crappy over the years as tasteless yuppies have gentrified and really spoiled just about everything (like Manuel's across the street). Still, the Videodrome experience has stayed basically the same. Kudos. 3. They provide variety and surprise in an era where redundancy, re-makes, and cliche have really become the absolute rule of law in film and television, Netflix included. I will truly miss them if I ever have to leave the city. They are a real gem and enrich the local culture as few establishments can. read more

One day it occurred to me that, somehow, I'd never seen the movie Feast of All Saints. When I found out it featured heavyweights like Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Forest Whitaker, Eartha Kitt and James Earl Jones...I just HAD to see it. So I went to work trying to track down a copy at the local library. I wasn't surprised that none of the branches had it; not only was the film 10+ years old but it was a made-for-TV movie too. Then I had a light bulb moment. Call Videodrome. Long story short, they didn't have it either. They offered to order it for me though. Then they called me a couple of days later to pick up the DVD. RIDICULOUS Bookkeeping!!!! Just found a charge to my checking account for $20 from Videodrome. We haven't been there in ages, so I called them to find out what is going on. Apparently they are charging us a late fee... from ELEVEN MONTHS AGO. When I asked if they always take this long to process things, they said "we do it whenever someone gets around to it". As we don't go there very often (uh, hello, Netflix) I clearly remember paying this fee... but who saves a receipt from a video store for 11 months?!?! I was told I could call back in two days and talk to the manager... who might or might not be there between noon and 3. I think I'll stick with Netflix from now on... at least I can trust them with my credit card info. read more

I have a netflix account and I'm in Videodrome at least twice a week. Ever since I found this place I've been addicted to it. Not only is the selection out of this world but it's also catologued in a way that will lead you to what you want. You want Brittish or German films? Go to the Brittish or the German section. You want a Francis Ford Coppola flick? You can find it under Francis Ford Coppola. Japanime? You guessed it. Videodrome also has a great selection of music docs, music performance, and music video dvd's as well as a nice little selection of skate videos. That's the kind of stuff you don't always find on Netflix. If you'd never been there before the guys that work there might seem like pretentious, hipster, cineophiles who would judge you for renting "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" or "Wanted" but they're actually very helpful, patient, and non-judgemental. They're knowledgeable when it comes to movies but they're just as likely to be watching Jean Claude Van-Damme as they are Todd Solondz. read more

Videodrome is, well....AWZUM! They carry a ton of rarities, foreign films, and cult classics in addition to all of your main-stream classics. I agree with other yelpers that the staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. I can't tell you how many times I've dreaded asking someone a question at Blockbuster only to get a not-so-friendly response. There are some downsides to Videodrome. I have had waaaay too many scratched DVD's from there. Nothing ruins your night more than when you plan to watch a movie, and you get 45 minutes into it, and it cuts out. ARGH! Also, late fees are not so fun. But these are the shortcomings of an indy store, so I don't mean to complain too much. And I forgot, sometimes their organization system is a bit tricky if you aren't a movie buff. Some of the better flicks are categorized by director and I'm lost there. read more

Thank the Lord there is still a movie store. Red box sucks and Netflix and I got into a fight. So when I want to watch a movie on my 20 something inch old school television, this is where I go. They have a really great selection and not just mainstream films. This is a current video-rental store. Videodrome has DVDs and blu-ray - no worries they're not giving out VHS tapes, although that'd be fine for grandma 'cause yes, I still own a VHS player. My only complaint is the location, which is great because it's less than 2 miles from my house, but crossing north ave and highland is often tricky. Simple rule: look both ways. read more

This little corner video store is one of the last of its breed. Take a long look and even take a picture to help tell your story of what it was like to actually drive out and physically pick up a video when you wanted something to watch on a Friday night. Upon entering, you'll quickly notice that this store is reminiscent of every single rental place you've ever visited. The obscure video playing on the little 12in TV, the wall of new arrivals, and the bored employee behind the desk chit chatting with a customer... ahh, it was heaven! This little joint really does have its appeal, from the amazing categories to the great selection of rarities, it has it all. From the entrance, the rows to your left are categorized by their country of origin, which is a great way to narrow down your search even if you're not searching for a particular film. This place helps you find a movie based on your mood! If searching by country does not achieve your approval, check out the room to the right where it's categorized by director! It's a videophile's dream! The most well respected directors have their own little section on the wall, which sent a great shiver down my spine when I first found it. The room around the corner may be that one room that most old video stores have in the back, but not exactly for the reason you might have assumed. It does have some categories that will leave a thought running. Some categories such as "gore erotica" and your typical "slasher" section had me imagining various scenes, though kind of had me intrigued! It's basically the section that your typical neighborhood HOA mother would love to ban. Kind of taboo really, and I believe I even saw "Cannibal Holocaust" sitting on the shelf when I was there, though my mind is foggy. Checking out was quite easy and they didn't even require me to fill out a long winded contract or form just to rent for a single night. They just needed one signature and we were good to go! The one gripe I have about Videodrome is its lack of bluray discs, and I wished they had a bigger selection. I used to come here about once a week when I first moved to Midtown. Unfortunately, I eventually fell victim to Netflix and stopped coming as often (typically only when I needed something weird like a David Lynch film) Then Scoutmob did an offer for a free rental and it's not like you can turn that down. We ended up renting two movies that night and I soon remembered why I used to love this place. These guys have EVERYTHING. Yeah, they have all the popular titles that came out last season that you were too lazy to see in the theater. But what's really exciting is the huge collection of classics, foreign, and directors they carry. There has only been one movie that I've asked for that they didn't have and they ended up getting it for me. If you're with a friend/date for movie night, there's something about actually driving to the store and browsing the racks that clicking a button on your TV just doesn't compare to. Plus, the guys behind the counter can always give you a recommendation if you can't decide on your own. Rarely do they ever disappoint. Truth be told, I still have my Netflix account, but I'm back to my old habits of stopping in here at least one a week, if not more. read more

Did not specify that this store is rentals only. Had to learn from an employee inside the store myself. The movies you are allowed to buy consists of only DVD's (spefically movies you would never want to own in the first place) and vhs's (but who buys those anymore?). It's been pretty well covered, so I'll keep it short. Parking is definitely very limited. I like that they have stuff on foreign/bootleg DVDs that isn't released in the U.S. (like some crazy Takashi Miike movies, for example). While they do have lots of stuff that isn't available on Netflix/elsewhere, I have also found myself coming up empty here numerous times so it's not really a place that has everything. Still, they have a pretty great selection of foreign and genre films, which is why I come here. 4.5 read more
