    Fish market
    Nick C.

Since my recent visit to Washington D.C., I have been on a mission to find some fried catfish at the level of D.C.'s local eateries. But unfortunately, this quest is proving to be more difficult than expected. I chose to visit Fancy Fish because the name amused me. Valbona X. joined me on the trip to Passaic. The majority of the employees are Hispanic, it's pretty helpful if you can speak Spanish. I think this place doubles as a fish market, cuz you can buy raw fish by the pound. They will also offer to fry it for you. I got a pound and a half of fried flounder filets for $12. I thought that this was a great deal, since I got a lot of freshly fried fish for not a lot of money. The atmosphere of the restaurant shows a hole in the wall, but there are tables if you want to eat there. They accept credit cards too, which is convenient and atypical of the hole in the wall restaurants of the area.

Delicious! Worth the wait! All the food is very fresh, I would recommend take out because the location is very small and there isn't good parking around the area. There isn't a menu but you can ask what type of fish they have and you can add sides like fries, rice, yuca, salad and it usually takes about 15 min to prepare it. Overall awesome.

What was I thinking, going to a fish place on Good Friday? This local eatery is obviously not a secret to people in the area because, today at lunch, there was a line out the door. On the left side of the restaurant after the front entrance, there is a place your order sign in Spanish and English. Behind the counter by their display window, they have fresh seafood--stacks of whole fish, fillets, salmon steaks, etc. I realized given the crowd that I would not be able to eat in. So, I opted for take out. The guy who took my order said that the Red Snapper fillet I wanted was $7.99/lb. Initially, I told him I wanted a pound. He took 2 large fillets and put it on a scale. Realizing that this was way too much food for lunch, I told him I needed only 1 fillet--about $5 worth. Then, he took my fillet, put it in flour, and into the deep fryer. How's that for fresh! While I was waiting for my food to cook, I took a look at their menu. There were no prices, but in hindsight this would make sense for seafood. I also noticed that many customers ordered the whole Red Snapper. With this fish, they clean it, and then, it is the same cooking process as I described for my fillet. There are a number of sides that I saw: salad, french fries, fried yuca, Spanish rice, and others. I opted for the Spanish rice, and my lunch came out to $7. As mentioned in a previous review, parking may be a problem. For me, this wasn't an issue. I parked in a municipal parking lot just down the street from the restaurant. If you are a yelper and like fried fish, give this place a try. Happy eating.

Hidden gem. A whole snapper for less than a fraction in restaurants. All sides are $2. Outstanding, fresh caught fish yesterday. Today it is waiting for you to eat.

It's a very casual, cafeteria-style spot with a semi-open kitchen, but don't let the simplicity fool you -- the food is incredible and the staff here is friendly and patient. The highlight of the experience is the small buffet that features a variety of freshly-made Latin cuisine -- including pulled pork, chicken and beef stews, and other traditional Latin entrees and sides. You can build your own plate by selecting one or more entrees and sides - which are priced accordingly. As a 'gringo' who wasn't entirely sure what everything was, I really appreciated them taking the extra time to explain all the different options and give me their honest recommendations. The counterstaff is bilingual and were pretty patient with my elementary school level Spanish vocabulary and grammar. I ended up going with the pulled pork platter with two sides ($7) and it was terrific -- the perfectly seasoned and tender pork, black beans and rice, and macaroni salad were delicious and very filling. You can tell they use fresh ingredients, and the portions are very generous for the price. If you're looking for authentic, home-style Latino food in a laid-back setting, this is the spot! PRO TIP #1: Bring a bottle of wine or beer from home to enjoy with your meal. Sazon Latino is a BYOB establishment and does not serve alcohol. PRO TIP #2: Sazon Latino offers free off-street parking in a small lot behind the restaurant and there's plenty of free on-street parking on Main Street.
