    Tasteless ceviche bad bad bad

Worst insipid fish ceviche With American corn not Peruvian corn The chicken soup had old hard pieces of chicken you can't even chew and it tasted like all ginger. Awful food

Saltado de Mariscos (especial) breaking the whopping 4 lb mark.

Despite the insane amount of fries in proportion to the meat, they over delivered flavor and quantity. Best Peruvian I've had in NJ by a long shot even when you take the gargantuan portions out of the equation. Entree flavors were just spot on for the lomo and pollo and the sauces were great too. So reviews saying huge portions, but what are we actually talking? Here are our meals on a scale (images attached for your enjoyment). Lomo Saltado - more than 2.5lbs Pollo Saltado - more than 3.25lbs Saltado de Mariscos Especial - more than 4lbs!! I'd rank the meals as I listed them above, ie inverse proportion to their weight. I probably wouldn't order Mariscos again but good value and flavor overall. But quality of the seafood just wasn't there for me personally. Very happy to have found this place. We're probably be return customers... with a request for more veggies and less fries.

Food is delicious and portions are HUGE...like big enough to split or you will have plenty of leftovers. We ordered the Mixto ceviche, churrasco con tacu-tacu and bistec a lo pobre. Everything was great-one thing I would recommend is to get the steak rare if you like it more medium-because everything was packaged so well the meat continued to cook-so it was a little more well done but still delicious. Happy we found this little gem!

By far the best Peruvian food you will ever find in the entire U.S. We have traveled the country and tried Peruvian food all around and stumbuled upon this tiny spot almost by accident, the owner cooks authentic "chifa" plates full of flavor. You will enjoy the classic staples such as ceviches, jalea, lomo saltado, chaufas and the all-amazing tallarin verde. See the uploaded pictures, visit this amazing place and enjoy!...can't wait to go back

As you know I'm a huge fan of Peruvian food so I have to properly praise the owner/chef Cesar and his wife Meche with a 5-star review. Don Julio Restaurant mainly focuses on Peruvian food and Chinese-Peruvian fusion called chifa. They serve lunch specials Monday-Saturday. You have two categories standard Peruvian dishes and chifa lunch special s(see pic). I've come here more than 10 times so I must have tried half of them but they are always trying to change it up every week. The taste resembles Peruvian cuisine. If you ever been to Perú (please go if you haven't), it's really hard to imitate the flavor found in Perú but Cesar, the chef with 20 years of experience, brings you amazing Peruvian food that will stimulate your taste buds to the max. My recommendations: Fish ceviche: you can order it not spicy, medium spicy or spicy. It does not have Peruvian corn but they add american corn which is a good match. Thinly sliced celery or not if you prefer. Lomo saltado: small bites of beef scrambled with french fries, grilled red onions and tomatoes and served with white rice. Chef nailed this one. Papa a la huancaina: it's hard to explain what it is but it's short for delicious yellow dip. Hint: it contains queso fresco. Fried wonton: similar to what you think it is. Add some sweet tamarindo sauce. You guys rock for elevating the Peruvian cuisine in new Jersey.

Wanted to try a different place and this restaurant popped up on yelp. We are so glad we gave it a try because food was amazing and u can't beat the lunch specials that come with soup n a drink. I thought it would disappoint but I'm glad to say it was all delicious from the ceviche to the lomo and the jambalaya! Will definitely order from here again!

I order the Lomo Saltado . Portions are enough for two! Fresh ingredients, but sometimes too greasy . Overall great taste.

The restaurant is colorful, lively, and has a great atmosphere without feeling too formal. We started with the Tuna Wantacos. Our server warned us that they were spicy, and he was right -- definitely a little kick, but very flavorful. The white fish ceviche was bright and refreshing, with that tangy, salty leche de tigre that really wakes up your appetite. The Lomo Saltado was hearty and satisfying, but my favorite dish of the night was the Seafood Arroz Chaufa. It came topped with an omelet and had squid, fried shrimp, and plenty of seafood throughout. Really comforting, savory, and filling -- I would absolutely order this again. We also had chicha morada and a passion fruit drink. I've always liked purple corn drinks, so the chicha morada was an easy favorite. We finished with a chocolate dessert, which was a nice ending after such a big meal. Overall, a very enjoyable Peruvian dinner with fun décor, good flavors, and plenty of variety. I'd definitely come back, especially for the seafood fried rice.

We came to Jarana with high expectations. As fans of Peruvian cuisine, we were excited to try a…read morerestaurant associated with such a well-known Peruvian chef. We left with the impression that this is probably the kind of restaurant someone should visit for their very first introduction to Peruvian food--not because it represents the best of Peru, but because it offers a simplified version of its flavors. The restaurant itself is beautiful. It's clear that a significant investment was made in the design, atmosphere, and overall experience. The service was friendly, and we noticed that many of the servers were Colombian, which isn't surprising since Colombians are well known for providing excellent hospitality. However, there were moments when it seemed that some of the traditional Peruvian flavors and drinks weren't fully understood. For example, the Pisco Sour we ordered was much sweeter than it should have been. We decided to start with the jalea, hoping it would set the tone for the meal. Unfortunately, it did the opposite. The dish was overly salty and lacked the balance and excitement that a great Peruvian jalea should have. Instead of reminding us of the vibrant seafood flavors found in Peru, it tasted more like generic fried seafood than an authentic Peruvian recipe. After that dish, we chose not to continue with the rest of the menu. To make matters worse, both of us experienced stomach pain afterward, which confirmed our decision to leave. One thing that also caught my attention is the restaurant's description of its food as "approachable Peruvian cuisine." Making Peruvian food approachable should never mean lowering the quality or authenticity of its flavors. Simplicity and accessibility can absolutely coexist with exceptional taste. The beautiful atmosphere should be matched by food that delivers the same level of excellence. Considering the premium prices, the culinary experience simply didn't justify the cost. If someone has never tried Peruvian food before, Jarana may serve... again: may serve as an introduction. However, for anyone looking to experience what Peruvian cuisine is truly capable of, there are several outstanding Peruvian restaurants within just a few miles that offer more authentic flavors, a better overall dining experience, and often at a lower price. I genuinely wanted to love this restaurant because the concept and ambiance are impressive. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the setting or the reputation behind the name.
