I absolutely adore this Asian bakery. It's very bare bones, but proves that you don't need frills and kitsch to sell a good bakery item. Everything I've gotten from here has been a hit. It even has managed to impress friends who don't adventure too far outside of their own American culinary tastes. The sweets here are the perfect amount of sweet. The savory items also contain a perfect hint of sweetness that somehow ties it all together. I've even had a matcha (less sugar) made here and my God it was unexpectedly delicious. I usually spend about $20-ish and share my bag full of goodies with my folks. I love that you can get a lot with a little -- the dollar still stretches here! Sometimes their open hours are a bit off, as if been before during regular hours and they've been closed. I'll also add that the entrance can be confusing as Family Baking shares space or simply is owned by Rolls Village. None of this stops me from stopping by. The cherry on top is that the service is truly phenomenal. I love being greeted where I spend money, and the guy who frequently mans the cash register has such great energy. He's efficient as hell too! When I visited, he skipped through the tipping portion of the POS both times... so I'm not sure if they accept tips but I won't complain too much about that LOL. It seems that Family Baking merged with Rolls Village as the entrance was the same for both. They have very delicious Asian buns and also have vegan options too. One of my friends recommended this spot, and I really didn't know what to expect--but she hyped it up, it wasn't far, and I figured why not? I'm so glad I gave it a shot. Then there was the Coffee Butter Cream Pastry. I thought at the very least my fiancée would like it since she enjoys coffee flavors. That was another miss. I even gave some to two little ones, and the faces they made reminded me of the time I tried canned octopus. That's how bad the flavor was. But now to the good stuff--because the rest? Fire. BBQ Pork Bun - Yummy! Not packed with meat, but enough to enjoy and super easy to pull apart. I really wish they offered a heated option for this, because that would've put it over the top. Japanese Milk Cream Bun - Super creamy. I do wish it had just a little more cream inside, but the bread was so soft and delicious, I honestly didn't care. Hot Dog Cheese Bun - I got this for the little one and I've never seen a child eat something so fast. I'm taking that as a solid win. Egg Tart - Grabbed this from the front warmer after watching another customer snag one. I had missed it earlier. Not totally my thing on its own, but when I got home and added a little chili paste? For those who are trying to buy Asian styled cakes, Family baking is definitely one of those places that can fulfill that. And if you're vegan, this is the place to get your cake. Usual cakes are super sweet and that's why I've always been turned down on eating cakes. But with family baking, it's not too sweet and hits just right. I have bought multiple times from here their vegan cakes, and they have never missed the mark. You just have to remember to call ahead to place your order and they'll have it ready for pick up depending on when you want it. The owner is always helpful and kind whenever we visited. They have vegan bakery goods as well, if you're ever trying to stay away from eggs. Of course they have Asian styled baked breads and items. They do have seating here in case you want to eat here, but we just got our stuff to go. The ownership has changed since the original owners thought this place wouldn't last. But indeed it has. The drinks were decent from the last time we tried them with friends. But the baked goods were superb. No frills. Just simple and tasty. One example is the pork floss. The bread was super soft and chewy with a good amount of pork floss. I found this place through Yelp (duh) and needed a sheet cake for my friend's wedding banquet. I called and the owners were SO NICE. They spent so long on the phone with me listening to my requests. I wanted to try the cake before we ordered the big one so I went as soon as I landed in Atlanta and picked up the cake. We tried it on the spot and got a thumbs up from me and the groom. I normally don't like cake, especially Chinese fruit cakes, but this one was incredible. The sponge cake was light and fluffy and the cream frosting was also light and fluffy. Nothing was overly sweet and the pudding layer in the middle added something very special to it. And of course, when I see baked goods, I couldn't help myself and bought a bunch of everything. The egg tarts are SO GOOD. But my favorite is definitely the mini Swiss rolls. THEY HAVE A CHARCOAL FLAVOR????? Everything I have gotten from here was absolutely delicious. Was not expecting much from this cute little bakery based on the area but boy was I wrong! Coming from an area where Asian baked goods are normally $4 or more for one small bakery item, it was really nice seeing almost every single packaged bread priced at $2.50 INCLUDING the vegan breads. I was so happy seeing they make lactose free goods since it's so hard finding Asian breads without milk. Everything I got there I ate within a few days span and it stayed fresh/soft. I've had it happen where I leave cream breads/super soft breads out and they either get super wet/squishy or hard and these didn't do that. If there was one in my area I would be going everyday. Rolls Village is where customers are allowed to shop for baked goods. We came to Family Baking/Rolls Village business on a Friday afternoon. This is an Asian bakery, where everything looks fresh and neatly packaged. Prices are very reasonable too. I was looking for something that was cream filled, so I asked the employee who was at the register for suggestions. The was very friendly and came from behind the counter to point out which ones had cream in them. I ended up selecting what looked like two small oblong bread loaves that were cut down the center where cream was squeezed into the cut. They were big buns. I chose two because I really couldn't decide whether or not I wanted vanilla butter cream or chocolate butter cream, and ended up getting one of each. Since this is an Asian bakery, I knew that the cream wouldn't be very sweet, and I was right. One more thing - the tops of these big buns looked like they had finely shredded coconut on it. The coconut was more for texture and less for flavor. Since I'm not that much into sweet things, these were perfect for me. The bread part of my dessert had just a slight hint of sweetness. The cream was also slightly sweetened, and it provided some smooth moisture to offset the dryness of the bun. The coconut added a small amount of crunch. R got a lemon custard bun. It looked very good. R said that it was just a basic bun with a slight lemon flavor and not much custard, as he had expected. Parking was easy to find when we went, and parking spaces in the long lot (parking is free) are directly in front of the store. There is very limited seating (one table with chairs) inside. The store is well lit and clean. There are a couple of refrigerators that have cold drinks and cakes in them. Where do you begin to start about this amazing family owned bakery. They have so many wonderful baked goods. I can only comment specifically on the vegan items, as our family is vegan. We go here all the time. Wonderful drinks as well. The owners are so kind and just amazing people. I stopped in on Sunday to order a Vegan Strawberry cake for my daughter's upcoming birthday. I was worried that it may have been too late to order. This was the only thing she wanted was their Vegan Strawberry Cake. We stopped in and ordered the cake for a Monday evening pick up. Cake orders are picked up after 4 pm and before 7 when they close. They are closed on Tuesday, so we had to grab it on Monday. I've never had difficulty finding a space even though the lot is packed on weekends. II. SERVICE You need to spend $10 minimum for a card payment or else have cash on you. I really like that this business has a vegan section. Tbh, it's the only Asian bakery I've seen with this trendy detail. III. QUALITY Fresh. The bread, you know, makes it breaks a pastry. Most people rely too heavily on the filling content to pull through for the sad bread quality, but you don't have to worry about that here. I'm always excited to support small businesses that bring more tasty culture to Buford Highway. Chinatown has been seriously lacking some solid Chinese baked goods for a long time. This new shop has exactly that: some solid buns and pastries! I believe the man running the shop speaks both Cantonese and Mandarin - and is very friendly! I enjoy some of their buns, although they still don't measure up to the buns you find in Asia. The egg tarts are my favorite! The tart shell is layered and crispy and the filling isn't too heavy or sweet, perfectly eggy. And if you're lucky, you can find them coming hot out the oven! I tried to buy them earlier in the day but they were still baking. I left my contact information and made a pre-order for 6. They were nice and hot when I got there - it was just too bad I wasn't eating them fresh. There is a selection of vegan buns that I wasn't sure I wanted to try, as well as some cakes. I've ordered their milk teas, as well, which I don't think is a strong and authentic as the one at Master Bakery. My DEFINITE go-to for egg tarts now! There is plenty of parking close to the bakery. It is locating by Chinatown in Chamblee. The workers did wear masks and were super nice. One of the mooncake packaging was stuck to each other and it accidentally opened and dropped to the floor. He very politely said it was okay and threw it out. I felt so bad... It was my first time going, was super excited to try! We went on a weekend in the afternoon, for the most part, the display cases were still decently stocked with baked goods. There is one table inside that you can sit at, or you can walk into the open area by the food court to sit. Since it is around moon festival time, they do have moon cakes! Been so long since we stepped foot in Sweet Hut that it was a bit refreshing to find somewhere that is similar but with more diverse pastries. Not sure how my husband found this spot, but it's a family owned business ran by a husband and wife, who are super friendly (only seen the guy) and are great bakers. So far, my favorites have been the egg tart, ham and cheese bread, taro bread, and sausage bread. I guess personal preference is more of the savory options. Family Baking is a relatively new addition to the Atlanta Chinatown mall in Chamblee. This is a small, humble, low-key, and no-frills Chinese mom-and-pop bakery that opened in March 2019. It occupies one of the mall's street-facing storefronts, so you don't have to look hard to find it. The business has received stellar ratings on Yelp. Based on my experience, I wouldn't go as far as rating this place five stars, but we did enjoy the pastries we got from here. Service was nice and speedy too. This place serves Chinese/Asian pastries and tea beverages including milk tea and milk foam drinks with toppings (just like all the popular bubble tea shops). Like other Asian bakeries and cafes, items are prepared fresh daily for grab-and-go purchase. Unlike other Asian bakeries and cafes, Family Baking doesn't have much to speak of in terms of ambiance and decor. It's all about the product here, at least for now. Also, this business is smaller than the competition in terms of size, staff, and selection. During our visit, the store was set up with a pastry warmer/heater display case, tables and shelves stocked with individually bagged breads and pastries, and refrigerators partially filled with cakes, other sweet desserts, and canned and bottled beverages. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there was no dedicated seating, inside or outside, nor a restroom for customer use. If you want to eat or drink on-site, you can go to the mall's outdoor garden or take your food and bev to the indoor food court (it's open). There are restrooms at the food court too. I was a big fan of the Egg Tarts, Red Bean Mochi Bun, and Taro Bun. The Egg Tarts were terrific. I think they're some of the best you're going to find in Atlanta in terms of both taste and texture. The Red Bean Mochi Bun, topped with sesame seeds, was airy, fluffy, and filled with delectable red bean paste paired with fresh, soft, and chewy mochi. The Taro Bun was yummy with a nice balance of springy, appetizing bread and a tasty layer of taro in the middle. The Red Bean Paste Bread was good, but not what I was expecting. Instead of having a substantial red bean paste filling inside, it was a thin layer of red bean paste that was rolled into the bread and baked. I was probably wrongly expecting more of a Red Bean Paste Bun. My wife and mom liked it better than me. With the Mid-Autumn Festival tomorrow, Family Baking had seven flavors of individually-packaged mooncakes in front of the register. These mooncakes tasted homemade and, while OK, I was a little underwhelmed by them. I've had processed and mass-produced mooncakes that tasted better. I thought the crusts on these were a little too hard and the fillings a bit too dense. I'd be willing to give them another chance. I'd like to come back and try some of the roll cakes, milk tea, and, based on comments from others, the Malaysia BBQ Pastries and fresh Pineapple Biscuits from the pastry warmer. I hear the latter two are especially delicious. Note: Family Baking and Rolls Village, next door, are both owned by Jane Chung. At the time of writing this review, the two stores are consolidated into a single space and effectively operate as the same business. We entered the Rolls Village space and Rolls Village was printed at the top of our receipt. I asked Jane and her husband Michael about this and they explained to me what I wrote above. If you look at the storefront signs for Family Baking and Rolls Village, you'll see they both say 5389 E (same suite).
