Located…read moreconveniently in the center of Canal Park, we stopped by on a sunny Wednesday early afternoon, hoping to score some of the best sandwiches in town. Even though this was well past lunch time at 2PM, the outside patio was packed and there was a line of 10 people or so to contend with to order at the register. Due to how busy it was, our food took about 20 minutes to arrive. The Squealy Dan, Porketta ($16) - Unlike most other restaurants with Iron Range Porketta, Northern Waters slices their porketta thinly instead of pulling the pork apart. It has a pleasant spiced flavor and the texture feels as if it's cured rather than roasted. It's relatively tender, and while they give a decent amount of meat, it's completely overshadowed by the heavy spicy quality of the black pepper and the acidity and vegetalness of the crunchy pepperoncini. There's a bit of melted gooey provolone on top of the porketta. While nice, there's not enough to balance out the peppers. This is all on a crusty almost baguette-like hero roll, toasty and warm. The sandwich is served with a side dip that's essentially black pepper and pepperoncini water. Definitely not needed given how overwhelming those elements are in the sandwich. (3/5) Pastrami Mommy ($19) - I haven't had bison pastrami before. Now I know why it's not very common - it's way too lean and dry compared to beef pastrami. Still, it's nicely spiced and peppery, and there's not much of the bison gamey flavor since it's cooked out from the curing. There's a little bit of mayo underneath and some mustard on top, but it's not enough moisture or fat in my opinion to counteract the leanness of the bison. While there are some slices of provolone above the meat, they are served cold. I feel like melting it with the pastrami on the griddle would do wonders to help develop some more unctuousness. It's also served on cold rye - perhaps toasting with some butter would also help. Otherwise, the sandwich is just too dry and lean for my tastes. (3/5) I feel like I ordered the wrong items. I probably should have gone with some of the seafood sandwiches, but I found it strange they only serve Atlantic salmon rather than local lake fish. In the end, I appreciate that Northern Waters Smokehaus makes most of their meats in house, but after trying their food, I feel like it's more hype than substance. Bathrooms - Larger ones located upstairs, shared with the rest of the businesses in the mini mall. Note: Northern Waters Smokehaus charges a 3% credit card fee. This is disclosed on a sign at the front register. Food: [3/5] Service: [ ] Other: [+] Final Rating: 3/5

I saw they have frozen pretzels- which is perfect because I didn't want to eat it right now. I got two of those to go. I also got a blueberry danish for my husband- he approved! And two loaves of bread- the cheese curd and the rosemary onion in the one pound option. (They have a two pound and it's huge!) We enjoyed the bread toasted with butter and for avocado toast during the week. They offered to slice the rosemary onion bread but not the cheese curd- there's something about the cheese curd that they said they don't slice it. I can't remember. But it's fine/ we sliced our own. The pecan rolls and the cinnamon rolls looked amazing but I'm more of a savory gal. The shop was super cute. They have a sourdough class coming up. They have coffees and couches. Bathrooms for customers. Some merchandise for sale. They even have a monthly club where you can pick up or have your items delivered to you! Wow! I wish I lived in the area just for this bakery. I enjoyed reading about the business on their website/ two brothers!

I had the Duluth latte, which is super sweet but tasty. My husband had the drip coffee which was also really good. We shared their cheese curd sourdough bread and it is so good! You can taste the freshness, and my husband was already making plans to have it with his breakfast tomorrow morning. The ambiance is fun and casual. They have plenty of seating with pillows shaped like bread loaves and macarons. I was definitely eyeballing that pecan caramel cinnamon roll so we may have to venture back sooner than expected. Duluth's Best Bread is a solid choice for bread, baked goods, and coffee. Ten outta ten, no notes!

I don't remember exactly when my family started to buy pizzas, they'd call ahead, my dad would go and pick up (no delivery back then) and prior to that (and for a time after, I can imagine) family pizza nite meant a Chef Boyardee mix out of a box - contents were pizza dough mix, a can of tomato paste and small envelopes of powdered cheese and herbs. It was pretty awful. Whereas Sammy's is spectacular, and a Minnesota favorite, with a dozen or more locations sprinkled across the Upper Midwest, mostly descendents of the founder. But the Lakeside outlet was our stop, it's only in its second location since its origin, moving 2 blocks east of the original outlet. Each of the Sammy's pizza recipe is standardized, but each offers something a little different than other outlets. At Lakeside, it's broasted chicken for as long as I can remember, tho I have never tried it. "Broasting" is a registered trademark of the Broaster companyin Wisconsin that sells the equipment and licenses the method to independent restaurants and groceries. It's a combination of deep frying and pressure cooking, resulting in a fried, breaded, marinated chicken that is "less greasy" than conventional frying offers. I digress. Our Minnesota Burger Bureau Chief, Kawika, a large supporter of Sammy's Lakeside, today trekked out to try their calzones. The "Americanized" version of a calzone usually entails dough folded in a half moon shape, stuffed with pizza-like ingredients, and baked. In Italy, you'll often see a fried version, as well. Kawika ordered his calzone stuffed with pepperoni, green pepper, and mozzarella cheese. Although the ingredients were right out of the pizza fixings, and thus adored, he said the dough wasn't really to his liking, he was expecting them to use pizza crust dough. He is sure that this product will appeal to a large audience.
