Have you heard of hole in the walls? This is TRUE to that! When I first walked in, I wasn't sure if I walked in the right place. My friend recommended their sandwiches and said they tend to sell out so I was imagining a full house. But no, I walked into a tiny cafe with freezers and refrigerators lining the walls and a few tables in the middle. There were only three others in the restaurant but it was a Tuesday lunch and raining outside. Apparently they've been around for about 8 years, but we are just visiting them for the first time. The menu has changed a bit, so don't pay attention to the posters on the wall. It's basically just sandwiches and 1 rice plate now. Their $8 special cold cut sandwich is expensive for being on Bellaire but I will say their meat was flavorful and there were a lot of it. I actually didn't finish my sandwich because I was helping my hubs finish his rice place. You can select two different meats for the $15 rice plate. I'm not even sure if my near-adult son could finish the rice plate by himself. Overall, I would highly recommend them and would come again! If you speak Viet, the owner likes to chat. read more

So I think this is my new favorite banh mi spot in town. Its definitely tucked away in a corner and doesn't look like much when you enter. There's a small dining space with fridges and freezers lining the restaurant as it seems they also sell a lot of prepared foods for people to fully cook themselves. The staff/owner was super friendly and was happy to help explain what's popular and what options they had. Sadly, they were out of the cold cut combo (dac biet) so my partner and i went for a grilled pork and beef tripe. If you've read any of my other reviews, you'd likely know I love offal meat and to have beef tripe in a banh mi was a whole experience for me. The tripe was well cooked (think dimsum braised style) and they put a nice sauce that is sweet, savory, and spicy on it too. It had fresh veggies and the bread itself was light and crisp. They also are not stingy at all with the meat as both the tripe and grilled pork banh mi were stacked with protein. The grilled pork was also really good, lemon grass, char flavor, and same sauce that was in the beef tripe banh mi as well. They do also offer other plates of food and one person was eating one when we came in and it looked delicious. After having the banh mi here, I can see myself stopping by to pick one up every time I'm in the area. It keeps well and because they were so large, we couldn't finish them but air fryer they came back to life and the bread remained light and crisp. I came from out of town and this place is absolutely amazing. The owner is very nice and friendly. The portion is huge and the price is good. Best broken rice and banh mi I have ever had in the states. Highly recommend the homemade yogurt with purple rice!!! It's very refreshing and healthy. Food is definitely made with lots of love. My husband and I spent the weekend in Houston eating delicious (mostly) Asian food and this was my favorite thing I ate. I got the Pork Broken Rice Bowl and it was absolutely delicious. I've never had broken rice before, so I was excited to try it. The portion was big and the rice soaked up all of the flavor. They don't take cards, so it's cash or Zelle only. We originally tried to come at 9 when their hours say they open, but they weren't open. We came back in the afternoon and they were open. I tried the grilled chicken and grilled beef banh mi, as well as the tamarind tea / lemonade. I thought the flavor of both meats was really good. The biggest thing that detracted from it for me was the amount of fatty pieces. I'm sure lots of people love fatty meat--unfortunately I do not. But the sandwich as a whole was still good in general. And the sandwich itself was incredibly filling--probably the biggest banh mi I've tried. The drink was very very sweet, but had good flavor overall. We diluted it with water and it was even better. I love this place. Hands down one of the best Viet foods in Houston Texas. It was really hard to hear how much covid had effected their business. Due to the lack of customers they had to temporarily take out a lot of the items on the menu. Currently all they serve are the banh mi sandwiches but they were still delicious. We three sandwiches and had the nice owner cut the sandwiches into thirds so we could each have a piece of each other's. We ordered the meatball, the chicken and the fish. The meatball was a huge hit with my brother and friend. I loved the fish and the meatball came in a close second. I also recommend trying their sweet soup concoction. It has 15+ ingredients inside that benefits your skin, hair and reduces heat exhaustion. The owner is this sweet viet lady that is trying so hard to just get the walk in customers to try their sandwiches. Many just hear that they don't have rice on the menu currently and they walk out. The person who took our order was super sweet, she may have been the owner? It was Friday during lunch time and she was by herself in front of house. She recommended the popular and best dishes to try. Our drinks were forgotten even after food came out but she apologized and was very genuine. I didn't give a perfect 5 stars because there were some things they didn't have on the menu that we wanted to try. We ordered nem cuon as appetizers but that didn't come out til we were half way done with our food and it was the regular goi cuon. I told her that's fine we don't want it anymore because we're getting full. However she still had it remade and brought it out. Ordered dac biet cold cut banh mi - it was just okay. Lots of meat but the wrong meat combo so it was the same texture. I needed the pig ears or pork belly. Meatball banh mi. Good portions, way better than other meatball places. Com tam rice plate - order this!!!!! So good! Loved it. My wife took us here this past weekend, and I'm so glad she did. The banh mi is one of the best I've had since moving to Houston a few years ago. They have a unique sauce that they make in-house, and has a nice little kick to it. We got the pork and combination banh mi's and they were fresh and delicious with generous portions. The bread was also very good, which is the most important part of the sandwich! We also had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with one of the owners, Min, who works alongside her husband, who prepares the food. She warmly greeted us and excitedly told us about her menu and restaurant, and what makes her banh mi sandwiches special compared to others. She also shared the difficulties they've had to endure because of the pandemic, and that really resonated with me because it is tough times for mom-and-pop businesses like Min's. They have had to simplify their menu because of the pandemic, and that has also hurt their business. But Min maintains a great attitude, and I'm happy we were able to support their business this past weekend. We look forward to returning soon, and wish them the best of luck with business returning back to normal. If you are reading this review, do your taste buds a favor and go out and support their restaurant. We need eateries like this one to survive. They are what make cities like Houston great. read more

I can't say anything but good things about this place. Every time I come here I don't even need to look at the menu, the owner makes a suggestion and that's what I go with and the experience has been great. Portions are big and like some folks said, they put a lot of love into the food. So a little background about this place that you need to be aware of because we've become close friends with the owner. Please be patient with them as they're sorting things out as they lost their wait staff based on the fact that good help is hard to find. They've gone thru some that were unable to put in the effort of having your food cleaned and prepped in a certain way and I believe that's important for a customer and they wanted to maintain this high level of detail in the flavors. The wait staff is nothing more that the owner as a result as well but she enjoys engaging with the customers but this has a cost to everything which is the service becomes slow as she attends to everyone when it's busy. She's unfortunately is also the cashier and her husband cooks. SO it's a 2 man skeleton crew. Most of their customers are either by word of mouth like from Yelp or from customers like you and I referring it. Her english is next to none so relies on her menu which can bit a bit outdated but look for the today's special sign which I highly recommend looking at. Think of it this way, if you're willing to wait to go to a good gourmet restaurant, treat this place that way. give them some slack and don't plan on making this a fast food trip, make it an experience to either call in advanced to order to go or sit in and just relax and let them take care of you. read more

We got the bo cuon la nho (beef wrapped in grape leaf) and the Banh hoi nem nuong/thit nuong (special viet vermicelli noodles with pork and spam-like mixed meat). The bo cuon came with papaya cucumber salad. Very good and only $6. The Banh hoi was a little expensive at $13 but it was well worth it. They gave us ample amounts of meat and veggies. We loved everything we ate. The restaurant is brand new and operated by a husband/wife duo, so the service was slow when we came in for dinner. Otherwise everything was awesome. I got a Pork Banh Mi sandwich and cold drink to go,...$7.10 total. This Pork Banh Mi sandwich is one of the best I've had in a long time. I actually can't remember having a better one in my many years. The Pork was really tender, plentiful and was good quality. The bread was perfect for a Banh Mi sandwich. The bread was fresh, crispy on the outside but not tough like most places. The sandwich had such a great flavor as well. Not sure if that was from the meat or the sauce but it was really good. Fairly new place behind Pho Ngon. Friendly and talkative owner. She recommended a few items for us. We tried the bo la nho which was very tasty. It was served over a mix of veggies/fruits (I think carrots, daikon, cucumbers, green apples, and mangos). We also got their combination com tam which was very good also. They're not skimpy with their portions. She added extra spice to our nuoc mam and it had real red peppers in it. We also tried nuoc mat per the owners recommendation. Although I live literally 10 mins away from this restaurant, I had never heard of it until my friend recommended it to me. We got the Special Grilled Rice dish and the not-on-the-menu Grilled Lamb Rice dish. 1. Special Grilled Rice: the meat is either too dry or too moist. It was just good enough and very similar to the authentic one in Vietnam. The grilled pork cutlet, the steamed egg meatloaf, the shredded pork skin are really good. They also included a piece of grilled pork sausage. However, I do not really like it. To me, it needs to be more chewy or crunchy to make it more authentic taste. Overall, I rated this dish a 4/5. 2. Grilled Lamb Rice: you will get the whole big piece of lamb and it also comes with a small pile of vegetable. It tastes very different, compared to lamb dishes that we have tried else where. I don't know. It is not really spectacular that makes me want to order it every time. I do not dislike it as well. Anyway, just give a try.
