After the paperwork was done and $209 paid, I advised an optician, Mr. Fredrik Wood that I wished my new glasses lenses would be the same high quality as my old ones, from New York. On these words, Mr. Wood requested to borrow my old glasses to be sent for a pattern reference along with the order to a lab that will work with the order. For unknown reasons, it took them the whole month to complete the order. On arrival at the University Opticians office, to my dismay, I discovered that there were no more of my old glasses in existence: its 8-year-old dilapidated frame was used to install new lenses, and high-quality old lenses had been discarded by Mr Wood. On all my perplexed questions, he just shrugged his shoulders and mumbled. The new product was incapable of being worn by kept slipping down my nose. That's not all: if the right lens was hardly acceptable, the left lens seemed to be out of visual focus at all. I demonstrated to Mr. Wood that I can read smaller letters with my left naked eye than with new glasses. Yet on my request to reorder the lens, Mr. Wood continued going on that something is wrong with my left eye, or my prescription that I brought in was not accurate: "You need to see Doctor Barber. He has worked for me for 12 years. It's right here in the office." Now, as a side note, I am a 78-year-old man, not good at proving my point, easily losing train of thought, and gullible enough to follow deceiving recommendations. At that point, I said: "OK, let's get to the bottom of it". So on December 26th, I paid another $69 to Mr. Wood for seeing the doctor. At the beginning of the eye exam session, on my request to check my vision with the new glasses, Dr. Barber kind of ignored my request, and changed the subject by replying with some medical terms of which I don't have any knowledge. He proceeded with dilating the eye pupils. My vision got blurry, so it wouldn't make much sense to repeat my request. He examined the retina and told me that the prescription I brought in was correct, and he couldn't FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH MY LEFT EYE. Though eventually, he made vague references to some other clinics where I could check my eyes, "just in case." Afterward, I think, the first thing Dr. Barber was supposed to do was to check my vision with the new glasses on, but he didn't. Once again, I see with my naked left eye better than with these new glasses on. My guess is, that Mr. Wood had instructed Dr. Barber not to involve the glasses in the problem and to send me to some other clinic so that they would buy some time and get rid of the annoying customer. After the exam, on my request to correct the situation by reordering glasses with a new frame and the correct left lens, Mr. Wood produced a slip of paper with some clinic phone numbers suggesting that I must first to head over there to check my retina. Secondly, on my return from the clinic, I must pay for the recorder. At this point, it occurred to me, that these people don't wish me any good. As a result of it all, a heated argument developed that wound up with Mr. Wood bluntly saying to me "Get the f**k out of here." To sum up the whole ordeal, I believe, Mr. Wood committed fraud by covertly installing new lenses in the worn-out frame and discarding high-quality lenses. All in all, I feel, I have been taken advantage of by dishonest people. The place doesn't have any connection with the University of Florida Eye Clinic, they just exploit the name. Joseph Zacharow.

She said her family comes to Gainesville Vision. I have been only pleased and highly pleased at that by the professionalism and service of the doctors and their staff here. The eye exam was thorough yet quick and the doctor was very good about answering questions for me. I am involved in a variety of sports so this presents specific concerns (and also is why I insist on Oakley frames because they're about the toughest in the business). What type of variable tint would I need for soccer in bright sunlight or should I just get separate Rx sunglasses? When I am platform diving, I obviously take off my glasses so is the instant transition from corrected vision to uncorrected and from sun-filtered to not something to worry about? Other doctors have seemed unable or unwilling to really delve into specific sports-centric vision issues with me but this one did, and did so gladly. She was simply excellent. When I came back to get the frames I selected when the glasses' lenses were ready, the technician involved was equally professional. When I ran into some issues with these frames playing soccer weeks later, they had time for me again and ended up sending the frames back and getting news ones which worked better at no additional cost. I never felt rushed or like I was causing an imposition for anyone here but instead that they take all the time necessary to ensure each patient's needs are completely met. Very impressed with the entire business.

I've been to lately. after everything was done and the eye doctor came in and went over the results and has been going back to see another eye doctor because of some of the results three people I dealt with a front desk, the tech, and the eye doctor were all great people. Pay attention to your credit card charges/statements and random charges being submitted to your health insurance without patients approval and authorization. 3/28/2025 - First billing scam/issue. Had appointment on 3/28/25, eye where dilated by dr., was incorrectly billed and credit card over charged. Used my VSP vision insurance, w/ copay $10. Dr office billed a subtotal of $50 for 3 line items. My credit card was charged $120.00. Dr ended 3/28 appointment early and requested a follow up refraction appointment one month later. Dr. Office refunded $120 back to credit card. And then charged my credit card $60 even though invoice subtotal was $50. Patient paid $60 in full at time of service. 04/28/2025 - Second billing scam/issue. Had appointment on 4/28/25 with Dr. Starlings for the 3/28 appointment she ended and then requested a follow up exam and refraction. On 04/28/2025 Dr. Starling completed refraction, new contact rx issued, new and trail contacts ordered. Dr was fully paid at time of service. On 4//29 one day after my appointment, Dr. Starling dropped me as a patient! WTF, what horrible service and experience. Next Dr. Starling, canceled the new contact rx she wrote the previous day, cancels my trial contacts she ordered, and has her front desk tell me that they are refunding for the services they rendered. I questioned and complained that the 4/28/25 $45 copay was a second copay being charged for the first visit on 3/28 which Dr. already collected the copay when processed under VSP. Early on 04/29, I spoke with Lauren from Dr. office about 04/28 charges. At that time I asked Lauren if my VSP insurance was listed and billed. Lauren confirmed yes it was for 3/28 DOS charges. I asked Lauren if my Florida Blue Insurance was listed on my account profile. Lauren lied to me telling me no. I advised Lauren my VSP is the only insurance Im using and should be the only instance listed. I asked her to please remove my health insurance information from their system if listed. Next, Lauren said my health insurance wasn't billed for 04/29/25 DOS charges. According to my health insurance, Dr Starlings office billed my health insurance $80 of my copay 04/28 and then billed me $45 as patient responsibility. Why am I and my health Insurance being charged a second co-pay on a secondary follow appointment and services originally postponed by Dr Starling on 03/28/2025 until 04/28/2025?

I don't like health care providers who sell what they prescribe. She was a little pushy about them when I declined. That felt sketch. I'll let my MD manage my blood or other diagnostic tests and monitor supplementation as those products affect more than eye health and Dr. S was not interested in what other vitamins and such I was already taking even though she's aware I have challenging health conditions. It really put me off. A pity as they are very thorough otherwise. My physician suggested we switch to an ophthalmologist/medical doctor instead as we age and if we need more attention for potential health issues and a deficiency such as this. I would have been grateful for this information from the optometrist along with encouragement to explore such deficiencies with my doctor. Also the young lady who manages the eyewear fitting and sales is inconsistent in her customer service although good at fitting. She can be sweet and friendly or seems annoyed and impatient from past experiences. I have spent lots of money with her in the past so I'm a solid long term customer. Her demeanor this visit made me feel awkward and since this wasn't the first time, it led me to purchase eyewear elsewhere for a more pleasant experience.
