If I would give ZERO stars I would!!! I am from California and visiting my boyfriend one weekend, I ran out of contacts. I read on yelp that this guy was decent, so I make an appointment and told him I ONLY needed a prescription for contacts and glasses. Months later, I get a BILL in the mail for 150 dollars for the "medical exam" that he provided, when in fact, he only saw me for 15 minutes max, and provided me with the prescription. What I am most upset about is that the day of the visit, I paid 80 dollars OUT OF POCKET, and was promised that insurance would pay the rest. If you do the math, how can a 15 min checkup be $230? This is NOT the price that he quoted me. It is now a huge mess and a total chore to sort this out. I have been dealing with their billing office trying to sort this out for 2 hours. The funny thing is that the billing office also said that what he billed me for was a MEDICAL exam, something a MD had to refer me to!! uhhhh I DONT think so. Also, Dr. Luria wrote me a contact prescription for a certain type of contact that he "thought" fit my eyes well. Well, let me tell you, I could not purchase any other type of contacts, I wanted Acuvue and I could only purchase the kind he prescibed for me. These contacts have been itching my eyes, they get dirty ALLLLL the time, my eyes produce more water and gunk, it's soooo annoying I wanna scream. Except I bought 1.5 yrs supply. I am so upset, I think he prescribed this type of contact because he HAD them in the office that day and wanted to sell them to me. DO NOT GO HERE, he only cares for the well being of himself obviously. Look below in the reviews that are "not recommended" to support my point. read more

I spent several hours looking elsewhere for glasses but couldn't find anything I liked. Paul took one look at me, handed me a pair of glasses, and said "I think you'll like these". They looked great and I bought them. The price was reasonable - less than what other independents had quoted. Everyone was super-nice, and the glasses look great! eye wear glasses. eye have poor vision. 3.75 in one eye and 4.25 in the other (eye don't know what that translates into in 20/20 speak even though my sister is an optometrist and tries to converse w/me about optical related topics) eye own numerous pairs of glasses one of these being a pair eye purchased from eye q. it's a little overwhelming when there are a ton of people in your face telling you how awesome a pair of glasses look on you (though to be fair, eye look d-eye-no-m-eye-t in glasses). that being said, they have a fantastic selection of eyewear. frames are not cheap, but looking good is not always cheap. read more

I have been on the hunt for a new pair of eyeglasses for months, and I've been to five optical shops in Harvard Square already looking for the perfect pair. Before I went into Eye Q, every place had something wrong with it: dismissive employees, limited eye wear selections, and I even got this distinct feeling from one that I was being ripped off (shady deals with rocket-high prices). So when I stepped into doors of Eye Q and entered its clean, simple setup, I wasn't expecting much. However when, Tricia - super-friendly, non-pushy, giving her honest opinion Tricia - greeted me warmly, I had a good feeling that this might be the day when I find my coveted pair of perfect new specs. True enough, I spent nearly an hour inside the store (but never felt rushed or pressured to buy anything), and ended up falling in love with not one but two pairs of eyeglasses! Of course, as it was the day after Christmas and my bank account was severely depleted from all the holiday shopping, I could only afford one. But oh what a gorgeous, face-framing, budget-friendly one it was! I am so happy with the service and the selections here, and I cannot wait to wear my new eyeglasses! Tricia predicted that I might just love them so much that I might start wearing my contacts less, and my glasses more. We'll see. But now I know that if I do need another new pair, I'll go straight to Eye Q and skip all the optical shops in the area. read more

Eye Q Optical in Harvard Square is TOPS. Toni Melcher & Eye Q's friendly caring staff pulled me out of a huge bind while I was traveling from the west coast on business. The airline I was traveling with lost my luggage (contact lenses included) and I desperately needed immediate replacements. I visited several eye care establishments in Harvard Square and Eye Q Optical alone went out of their way to come to my aide and offered me replacement lenses free of cost. All others were willing to assist but only if I placed a large order. My eye doctor in LA simply faxed Eye Q Optical my prescription (which they had in stock while most others did not) and in 30 mins I could see again. If you want to do business with a fair, caring and competent eye care provider any where near Harvard Square, Eye Q Optical is the best. read more

I was looking for a new place to purchase eyeglasses because my own eye doc/optometrist in Central Sq doesn't really have a good selection of frames. Anyway, I found Eye Q through Yelp. I loved the service and most importantly I loved the selection. They have a vast trove of what my boyfriend called "sexy dorky" eyeglasses. The store has a boutique feel but the price is competitive. I ended up purchasing 2 pair of frames in Nov 09 and about to come back to get new prescription sunglasses. read more

Love love love my new prescription sunglasses! They are designed by the people at Eye Q so I have a unique style that few other people have! These guys have really found the perfect balance btwn eye care professionalism and fashion. I got them in plenty of time for my trip to the Caribbean too. I'm going to feel like a movie star lying out on the beach. When picking them out there were two guys helping me at one point, but I never felt pressured, I felt like I was shopping with my friends. They made my glasses way faster than I expected and even offered to adjust the tinting if I didn't like it. Can't really ask for more than that! read more

Excellent place. Before going to Eye Q I visited 5 other eyeglass stores, and couldn't find any glasses I really loved. I walked into Eye Q and asked the salesman for help. He took a quick look at me, got a pair of glasses from the shelves, and handed them to me, saying, "this is the pair for you." They fit perfectly and I bought them. Their customer service is excellent. They're extremely friendly, and they have been great about repairs and maintenance. I would definitely go back there for another pair of glasses. read more

I am really happy I made a trip to Eye Q. Steve was super knowledgeable, helpful and yes patient as I tried on multiple frames. Settled on a Moscot frame and could not be happier with my new glasses and sunclip. Turns out my insurance covered quite a bit more than I thought which is super. I had a great experience at Eye Q. I was helped by Locke and Paul, and they both were funny and easy going, and helped me find a pair of nice frames that worked well with my high prescription. There was no pressure at all, and they gave me plenty of time to look around. I feel prices are competitive, but not cheap. For the quality and service, I will be back for my next pair. EDIT: i went back for my next pair, and they are great! paul helped me pick out a really cool frame. i really appreciate that they are very thoughtful when picking out frames, and make good recommendations that will complement your face. still the best glasses shop i've been to! read more

Wonderful. Simply wonderful. I actually like going to see the eye doctor now. I started going to Dr. Luria about 3 or 4 years ago; I had to get new contact lenses, and had just had an eye injury that I was still concerned about. He was so thorough, explained everything he was doing, and is just so respectful to his patients. The optical scans that he does are really helpful if you've had an eye injury or an infection that has caused scarring; they allow him to see if any damage has been done, or if anything has spread. On my last visit, he introduced me to a new kind of lens that is the best I've ever had; so breathable and comfortable. The staff at Eye Q, in my experience, has been nothing but kind, fun, and helpful. I've never bought glasses there, so never had any kind of real "sales" interaction, but their professionalism on the phone and in person is enough to make me really take notice, which is unusual. Also, I was a complete flaky jerk-off for my last appointment, and was really late because I forgot what part of Harvard Sq Eye Q was in. (I ONLY lived in Cambridge for 4 years. Sometimes I'm a dumbass.) and they could have been uncool about it. But they were cool. And Dr. Luria did my exam really efficiently, but still thoroughly, so that the person after me didn't have to wait. Which assuaged my guilt. And any eye doctor who can make me feel less bad about my flakiness earns extra special bonus points. read more

I have been to several other offices over the years and am so glad to have found Eye Q. I am usually uncomfortable with eye exams but Dr. Luria was great, took care to ease my anxieties and was very attentive and informative from start to finish. After the exam I met with optician Melissa, who had a great eye for exactly what I was looking for and was thorough in helping me get set up with everything I needed. I couldnt be happier with my frames, and with my insurance I paid far less than expected. The best service I have ever experienced at an eye glass shop! I walked in and was greeted immediately by both of the shop people--and they managed to do this without being pushy. I started trying on glasses by myself and within 10 minutes was asked to give an opinion on three pairs of glasses that another customer was trying on. This isn't something I would normally be thrilled about but it turned out to be fun and went a long way to helping me feel right at home in the shop. I had an eye exam by Dave who was just fabulous. He made me feel at ease, has a great sense of humor, explains everything as he goes along, everything you could ask for in the person examining your eyes. The glasses selection: Amazing! This store doesn't have much space so they cut out all the junk glasses and kept only the best ones. I found five pairs that I like. FIVE! I'm actually excited to buy one of them--but they are all so good, I haven't picked yet. Sadly, I will be moving out of the area soon but I'll tell you this: this store is my new glasses shop. Customer service is very good. Remember once you purchase glasses here they provide maintenance for free. The selection of frame is not bad (comparing to japanese stores). Great location and always polite staff. I found Eye Q through my friend. I purchased 3 pairs of glasses for myself and brought 3 new customers (my mom, my friend and her husband). I tried to go cheaper and buy online, but after a sketchy internet place "lost" my order, I came back for good old fashioned brick and mortar service. It is well worth it. I ended up buying the 1st pair I was asked to try, even though I was skeptical at first- now I love them. We needed them in a week and glasses were finished in 5 days. Everyone is really friendly and really care about how you look. It doesn't matter if you have no idea what you're looking for. Sure they are boutique priced, but the frames are high quality and you should expect to pay for that anywhere. Try to go when it's not crowded though, the store is small and there are only 2 seats at the counter. read more

This was by far the most eye glass store. The woman who helped me was very patient .She helped me find just the right frames. She was more than happy to let me try on lots of frames. I was very concerened about something in my lens and she took the time to mesure the frame to tell me how much reading room i would have She took a picture of me in the frames so i could get a much better idea how I looked. Hooray! Eye Q made me very happy. Very. I had had some issues with Parelli (see my review there) and ended up at Eye Q because Parelli couldn't give me contacts that worked *and* my glasses prescription was off (despite a different person doing each part). But the people at Eye Q were super-nice and I had fun talking to the owner while I waited for my exam. Then I saw the doctor and he was familiar with a problem I have (my pupils dilate much bigger than most people's, which means my pupils get bigger than the optic area of contacts) and knew just how to correct it (give a slightly stronger prescription). I wanted to cry from happiness when the first pair he gave me worked--this was after spending a month trying to get a pair that was even decent at Parelli. I'm forever grateful to Eye Q--they saved the day indeed! read more

Yelp's two-star rating, "Meh. I've experienced it better," sums it up well. My husband and I went in for an appointment last year. While my appointment was straightforward and seemed to yield fine results, my husband had to go back THREE times (to see the doctor) in order to get the correct prescription. First the doctor told my husband that he'd been overprescribed for years (umm...really?), then ended up having to adjust two more times after it was revealed that my husband had been wearing the correct prescription all along. Additionally, this place is very aggressive about making sure you buy from them. They didn't even really give us the option of ordering our contact lenses elsewhere...they just started totaling up the bill. Finally, many on the sales staff have major attitudes. Every time I have called them, they have been extremely rude on the phone. Case in point: I recently called Eye Q to get a copy of my husband's prescription, as we had relocated far away and needed to reorder lenses quickly. Right off the bat, the guy who answered the phone was rude. He said that he could only give me the prescription in person, or mail or fax it (according to MA state law, which is fine and understandable). I told him that I could make the trip into Cambridge and pick it up, but asked that it be ready for when I arrived. He nastily told me that they would have to write it up while I was there. Not sure how this makes sense, when they could mail or fax it without me being there at all...? Anyway, we certainly won't be going back there. Eye Q is way overpriced for the expertise and customer service they provide. The only reason I'm giving them two stars is because in the end, after much aggravation, they were able to provide a basic exam and prescription. read more

I really enjoyed my eye exam the other day. David really took his time with me, at no point in time did I feel rushed out of the chair or anything. He explained just about every aspect of the exam and helped me understand anything that was off. I was very pleased. I didn't end up buying glasses there, I went across the street to Cambridge Eye, so I can't speak to that aspect, but the exam was great. I would definitely recommend it. read more

I had some troubles with anti-glare layers peeling off of the lenses with my two pairs of glasses from Eye-Q. I had a talk with the co-owner, and upon hearing my situation, he was willing to give me new lenses at no charge, even though I was out of warranty. Based upon yelp i decided to try Eye Q... oh well, chalk my experience as just 1 person's i hope for Eye Q's sake i am the odd one... My story: i called and was told to make an appointment to see Dr. Luria because walk-ins while almost always quick were not a slot/for sure. when i arrived i was told 2 minutes... ten minutes later i was told just a couple more... twenty minutes later... at just under waiting for 30 minutes i gave up and went around corner to Vision House to their opto (Katsos?) ... he was great... vision house is expensive, but katsos is perfect.... while i was waiting around i did have a look at frames... much smaller set of frame choices than most stores ... seems like "hip only" frames ... as i am far from a hip person, i was pretty happy to have left (as i think of it today).... read more

I just had my first eye exam and bought my first pair of glasses. Boy, am I glad I chose Eye Q. The staff - especially Dr. David Luria, John, Toni, and Melissa - was unusually courteous and helpful. They let me neurotically browse for eons, and, when I told them I needed a few minutes to decide, they did not hurry me one bit. Even when I returned the day after I received my frames to compare them to another pair, they treated me as graciously as they had before. (I ended up sticking with my first choice after a few adjustments.) Overall, Eye Q is outstanding. I cannot recommend them enthusiastically enough, and I will be a lifelong customer. read more

I've had the same Rx for years and when my eyes started getting strained this past year, I went to Dr. Luria for help. I truly couldn't see and finals & full time summer employment were quickly approaching. After my first appt, the doctor charged $200 to change the Rx in my glasses. It was the wrong Rx. I went back 3 times due to a very fishy and questionable diagnosis of a "fluctuating Rx." He blamed it on a medication I was on at the time and googled the medication's side effects during our appt. (I later spoke with my doctor, pharmacist, and two separate optometrists who insisted my medication had absolutely nothing to do with my eye strain...) The office is very out of my way (1 train and 2 buses) but I continued to return because I was told these exams were covered by my insurance and after every appt, I left with their word that I did not owe a cent. On the third visit, the doctor looked me in the eye and said that until my "Rx stabilized, there was nothing he could do for me." There was nothing he could do? Doesn't sound like a professional medical expert opinion to me. So I left the office for a third time STILL unable to see my feet below me, with a pair of glasses with the wrong Rx, and no contact lens (which he said would cost an extra $90 and require scheduling a separate "contacts consultation"). It was time for a second opinion. I went to my childhood optometrist in Connecticut who examined my eyes and gave me a pair of sample contacts matching the Rx to tide me over and allow me to see. I was furious at the painless simplicity of this visit in Connecticut, which helped me to finally see after months of double vision, whereas Dr. Luria had me make 3 separate appointments only to tell me that he could not help my situation and send me away. I wore the contacts for 4 weeks without experiencing double vision. I wanted my $200 worth for the replacement lenses in my glasses so I called the office a fourth time to request they change the lenses a second time free of charge. Dr. Luria said that if I came into the office for another exam, he would change the Rx in my glasses, which were gathering dust in my desk drawer. After examining my eyes, he told me to come back AGAIN to make sure my Rx truly "stabilized." After booking my FIFTH appt, I received a bill in the mail for $200, claiming eye exams are not covered by my insurance. The date of the charges were back in March (my FIRST appt), so I only assume that I can look forward to several more of these charges on top of the $200 I spent out of pocket for the glasses that I can no longer wear. Needless to say, I will never be returning to the money-sucking, entirely unhelpful doctor. And I do not plan on paying for his.... "expertise." read more
