Friendly guy running this place. Unfortunately, I had 1 major issue and 1 smaller issue. I came in for a same-day lens replacement for a scratched lens. 1. He gave me the opposite prescription at first (I have a positive number for my spherical, and he gave me a negative number). I immediately knew it was wrong because it was incredibly disorienting, and he told me that my old lenses were prepared poorly and this is what they were supposed to be like and I just needed to keep using them and adjust to this. He confidently showed me the measurement on the machine behind the counter to prove it, but luckily I happened to notice that the number was wrong and pointed it out. To his credit, he apologized and fixed it, but it took an extra hour of sitting in his shop to wait for it. I can't get over how badly this would have messed up my eyes if I did as he said and just used them until my eyes adapted, which would have never happened. I have new glasses now with allegedly the same prescription, and they feel shockingly better when I compare them one after another. So I am concerned that at the end of the day, something was still wrong after all that. Perhaps it was the pupillary distance which he measured in a rush using a device which I may have been looking into wrong since I didn't have an explanation. 2. The whole process was expensive, and the lens quality was poor. I think they were the lowest quality lens material with no or poor antireflective coating. I accept that this is to be expected when buying on short notice, but there was no discussion of what i was buying or what options were available. This is mostly poor judgement on my part, and does not contribute much to my low score here besides the subpar price/quality ratio. He seems like a really nice guy, and perhaps service is much more accurate and faster on a day that isn't as busy as the day I went in. However, I wish that I had just put up with the scratch for another few weeks and waited for my glasses from the internet. read more

I was recently looking for a shop to get an exam and prescription update, after not having done so in a couple years. Not only that, the last time was in a completely different city (and coast), so I didn't really know where to start. But as usual, I ended up on yelp, cross referencing businesses with my eye coverage, and landed on Custom Eyes. Seemed like they provided all around good service, and now after going there, I can confirm this is 100% true. When I first arrived, I was greeted by a super friendly guy behind the counter, who had me start getting all my first time paperwork together. After completing it, I took a seat and waited to be called. To be honest, this was my one less than stellar experience at Custom Eyes. I didn't actually meet with the doctor until well after my appointment was scheduled. Not end of the world, of course (I know lots of things can happen to get off track), but was a little unexpected. However, Dr Murphy was excellent throughout the examination. She was friendly and went above and beyond to explain and provide helpful tips about my eyes/vision. She even helped to demonstrate why and how blue eyes are more sensitive to brown (had always known this was a thing, but not exactly sure why, until now!) During the exam, she dilated my eyes so I had some time to sit around while that took effect. Again, the guy at the counter (can't remember his name, sadly) was super helpful in going over what my co-pay would be for the visit, as well as the charge for the new prescription lenses. Also cool, rather than having to leave my glasses on-site until the lenses arrived, he said they would just call when they were ready, and then cut them to form on the spot. About a week later, I got a text letting me know everything was ready. When I stopped in, the cut process was fairly quick and then I was out the door with a much improved set of lenses. If I'm still in the Boston area when my next exam is due, will definitely come back. read more

Came here to help my teenage son select glasses. He is very particular, having certain style needs, and very resistant to getting glasses in the first place. There was such a good selection here, that he found several pairs that would fit the bill. The service was also amazing because The customer service gentleman helped pick which ones could be readily adjusted to fit his face and head better... really top notch expertise in service. So nice and friendly! I had such a great experience getting an eye exam and getting the lenses in my glasses replaced here. Dr. Murphy is a wonderful optometrist. The office part is tiny, but their appointments were spaced out so I didn't worry about things getting too crowded. They were able to replace the lenses in my glasses in 20 minutes since they already had the right ones in stock. I didn't even have to leave, just waited there for them to finish. Very reasonable price also. I was also given a free lens cleaner bottle and told that anytime I needed a refill I could come back and fill up from their giant bottle of cleaning solution at the counter, free of charge! Custom Eyes is about as cool and useful as an eye shop can get. The owner Kevork works the shop and is one of the friendliest people I've met in the area. Dr. Kathleen Murphy is smart and very calming. I've purchased both contacts and glasses here. If you're looking for an extra/second pair of glasses they have a great $99 deal that includes an exam, basic frames and lightweight lenses. I definitely recommend this place. As an aside - If you want designer frames but don't want to spend 400. Here is how: First, you want to find out your measurements. Using 48-19-140 as an example: All frames have standardized size measurements to help manufacturers and optical personnel fit them for consumers: The first number, 48, represents the size of the lenses. The second number, 19, is the bridge size, which ensures that the frame fits your nose. The third number, 140, is the temple length (temples are the parts that hook over the ears). So, go to any eye shop, find a pair that fits properly and write down the measurements. Now, all you have to do is go online, find a style you like, plug in your measurements and that's it! After you get the lenses cut from Custom Eyes (or anywhere) you're gelling. I estimated I saved over 200 on my last pair of frames. read more

I went here for my eye exam, and had a good experience with the doctor. While they have a great selection of glasses, they were all out of my price range. So I purchased glasses and frames at a different business where more was covered by my insurance. When I had to revisit Custom Eyes to adjust my prescription, the employee at the front desk was incredibly rude to me about not purchasing glasses from them. I was taken off guard by his tone and how disrespectful he was towards me. I was relieved to be able to leave and will never seek their services again. read more

HOWEVER the problem is with the rest of the experience Had an issue last year, decided to give them a second chance...BUT not any more!!! Last year was quoted $167 for the balance on the frames and lenses.....and this is the BIGGEST PROBLEM....My Insurance company said I'm only supposed to pay 77 (brought in the claim that was through my provider and they were ready to charge me the 167)....wtf. Realizing people make mistakes, especially with billing, I went for a contact fitting (which is covered) and it should only have been a $10 copay, they charged me $70 and didn't even file a CLAIM to determine the amount i should have paid !!! (and didn't give me an itemized receipt for anything) Something is very sketchy here when it comes to billing....Im getting my script from them and ordering elsewhere, WILL NOT be going back! read more

Yes, Kevork, the optician, & Dr Murphy, the optometrist, are friendly ... but since when does being friendly throw PROFESSIONALISM out the window????? What ever happened to keeping an a scheduled appt time? Dr Murphy was late for both of the scheduled appt I had made - each over 30 minutes late. I think this is Custom Eyes' ploy to force the patients to browse their eyes glass case displays. Kevork appears to be a very friendly & soft spoken individual but again where is the professionalism. Please don't make your patients have to ask for a receipt after having paid their co-pays & fees. This should be automatic. Kevork should also leave a message when calling to tell you that your items are ready for pick up - not call and hang up - ever hear of caller ID? I shouldn't have to call Custom Eyes back 48 hours after you tell me my contacts should be in. I had also asked that Dr Murphy write out my eye glass prescription at both visits and she insisted that it would be ready the next time I came in. I finally got my prescription written out - be grudgingly - when I went in to pick up my contact lenses. Needless to say I wouldn't recommend Custom Eyes to anyone. read more

This is the best experience I've ever had buying glasses! After years of going to LensCrafters, I wanted to try out something different. Thanks to my trusty Yelpers, I am now a convert and fan of Custom Eyes. What makes this place awesome? First off, The Field is next door. You can get hammered on Guiness prior to your eye exam. It's also conveniently located by the Central Square T stop, so you can leave your Harvard/MIT lecture mid-class and be back in time for the Professor's lecture wrap up to stop your digital audio recorder. And then there's Kevork. He runs this little joint, and while I personally can't comment on the optometrist since I got my peepers checked by someone else, Kevork simply rocks. I went in looking for eyeglasses and there was another guy there hunting out sunglasses. He told the guy to go outside to test out the sunglasses. Who does that? The guy could run away with the merchandise, but he encourages you to actually try out sunglasses in the sun! So, I'm asian (no nose), and have a big head, so most eyeglasses make me look like a dork. Kevork was able to give me a wide variety of wider-framed lenses to try out. He actually pulled them out for me to try. I felt like this four-eyed fat asian dude had a personal eyeglasses shopper. Tres chic! The other cool thing is that Kevork was honest. He told me what looked good and what didn't. He could've easily said that the $350 frames looked best on me compared to the $140, but he didn't. He never pressured me to buy the most expensive (the frames that he pulled out for me to try varied in prices from cheap to YOU GOTTA EFFING KIDDING ME!), but took the time to help me decide the right frames for my face. Lucky for him I have pretty expensive taste and was able to buy me some kick-ass Gucci frames. (Have to mention that sunglasses dude also put in his 2 cents so props to him too!) Finally, I have astigmatism, and it only took him a day turnaround to have my glasses ready. I had to wait a week at LensCrafters. Oh, he also told me about the most expensive but lightest lenses from Nikon that won't make me look like I'm wearing magnifying glasses. He told me about it but didn't push it. Love that he even tried to keep me on my budget, but lucky for him, I needs to spend my FSA money so why not splurge a little on designer lenses for my designer frames? (By the way, those Nikon lenses are worth it. Makes my LensCrafters featherweights look like the "before" contestants on the Biggest Loser.) Overall, if you need glasses, I can't say enough good things about Custom Eyes. You get personalized service (he calls people by their first names), no hassle or pressure, and quick turnaround time to get your ass back to The Field for another brew of Guiness. read more

When I first visit a new business, I immediately start drafting the Yelp review in my head. Good sign or bad sign? Anyway, I was mentally deducting stars from Custom Eyes' future review when I went to visit them on Friday morning. Despite posting a 9:30 AM opening on Fridays, there wasn't anyone there at 9:30. Or at 10:00. Sure, it was Good Friday, but they didn't have any signage indicating a late open. Hmm. Finally, after visiting another eye care specialist first, I gave Custom Eyes one last shot. Fortunately they were open this time and Kevork was circling the floor. "How are you, sir?" he called out with a smile. "What can I help you with?" Now, any eye care center will suggest frames you can try. But Kevork offered the most helpful suggestions of any eye doctor I've visited. "Those are a little too wide," he suggested, already whipping out two or three alternatives. "Put these on ... push them up a little higher ... there. How's that, yes?" Selection, quality and a friendly decor are crucial for me in any store. Custom Eyes has all of these, which surprises me given the neighborhood. But for any store where I'm buying a big ticket item - a television, a computer, a suit or a pair of glasses - I need top-notch customer service as well. I need to feel that I'm not being hustled into something more expensive than I need. Kevork knocked that one out of the park. Everything about him exuded professionalism and courtesy: the man seems to genuinely enjoy what he does. He speaks with confidence in making recommendations and has a friendly warmth about him that put me right at ease. As he was finishing my order, another customer came in. "Your order's right here," Kevork told him, producing a fine box from beneath the counter. I went there for an eye exam and a pair of new glasses. My eye doctor was very friendly and thorough. The people there are nice too but I waited way too long for them to get to me. Also, most frames are at least $200 and lenses are an extra $150. You can only return for in store credit within 10 days, and they have no accidental insurance whatsoever. Not bad. The staff is very friendly and helpful, but they can be pushy when it comes to sales. I understand it's one of the ways they have to make money, but I don't want to feel as though I'm talking to a used car salesman. Whenever I've asked for a copy of my prescription, they hesitate and ask me several times if I'd like to put in an order with them without getting a copy. Furthermore, it seems that every time I go for a fitting, I'm recommended trying a completely new contact lens. It makes me uncomfortable, so I end up ordering online most of the time to avoid the hassle. It seems like they tie their sales into their appointments, because I'm never quite sure what procedures are paid/covered until I get the final bill and discover I was actually had 3 paid procedures in one visit (although I thought I just had a simple discussion about contact lenses and got my eyes dilated). I end up signing the bill with a sigh, confused and hoping I'm signing the right thing. They're still a good business, with good people and a great selection of eyeglasses. I love Custom Eyes. Dr. Murphy is fantastic -- she is pleasant, efficient, and answers all my questions patiently and completely. She also tells me things about my eyes even if they aren't directly related to a procedure or correction -- things that I may want to watch as I age. This is incredibly valuable as someone who may move in the near future; I definitely want a doctor who cares enough to inform me of health issues that might not directly affect her business. Kevork is always so friendly, and gives great advice about insurance and how to get rebates on contact lenses or glasses. I cannot say enough good things about Custom Eyes. I had been looking for new frames for over a year; I tried samples from Warby Parker multiple times and went to at least 10 different glasses stores in Boston alone. At the end of the day, I still find the experience of trying on more than 5 pairs of glasses at once to be invaluable, so I prefer to buy my glasses in person than online. Custom Eyes has a very wide selection of frames (the most I've seen in any optical store in Boston). They have frames that will be perfect if you're on a budget, and they also have nicer frames that I haven't seen in other stores in the area (including Jai Kudo and Martin & Martin). Kervork is extremely nice and honest; he'll tell you if glasses fit your face or not (and why). He helped me pick out a new pair of frames in less than thirty minutes, which was record speed (as I usually take a long time going through frames on my own). It took about a week to get my glasses. Throughout the process, Custom Eyes was very professional and friendly. I first came here four or five years ago when I worked right next door. After going again last weekend, Dr. Murphy remembered me! She's always been very nice, and takes time to explain the hows and whys of the exam. Both times I have bought my frames from them as well. Kevork is so amazingly nice and warm. I have a giant head and he helped me pick out the perfect frames after I was ready to give up. It's a real casual and laid-back atmosphere right in the heart of Central Square. Even the front desk guy is great, and talks to you like a friend. My only tiny complaint is that they're always busy and sometimes you have to wait a little longer than planned, but it's not enough to knock a star off. I desperately want to be a cyborg. I want a robotic arm that gives me the power to open every jar with a minimum of strain. I want to be able to upload a backup of my brain to the Internet every day so that I can always recall that one really good Buffy episode when I'm bored on the bus. I want to use Purell and have vision good enough to see the 0.001% of bacteria still alive and flipping me the bird from the back of my hand. While it's still going to be a long time before I can look at a person and read their vital signs or upload helicopter piloting instructions directly to my brain, Custom Eyes has brought me pretty close to my bacteria-viewing super vision. I used to think I could see pretty well. I was just kind of tired all the time, nothing would ever be blurry if I could just get a decent night's sleep. My wife, on the other hand, definitely needed to get her eyes checked. After a fair amount of time Yelping around for the right optometrist, we settled on Custom Eyes. I'll let her tell her own story some day, but she was satisfied enough that I decided to get myself checked out. Maybe get a little certificate that says, "Dayum, you got some good eyes!" Because that seemed like a thing a doctor would do. Look, I know any optometrist worth their degree can click those lenses around until they find the setting so clear you feel like you can see through time itself. But does that mean that Dr. Murphy doesn't deserve full stars for doing just that? Of course not, especially when keep me comfortable while poking around some of my most sensitive bits in the dark (I'm talking about my eyes, perv) and showing me that, as a matter of fact, I did not already have better than perfect eyes (though they could be a lot worse), and my vision issues could be significantly improved with some glasses. Once I had my prescription and the frames I wanted, Kevork did a fantastic job of fitting them to my face so that they felt like they simply belonged there. While I did end up spending about $300 on the frames in total, they did give me a discount because Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance doesn't cover frames. I'm pleased with the way they look and feel, and walked away feeling extremely satisfied (and like I'd had some sort of powerful vision enhancement surgically implanted into my eyes). So until I get robot vision and laser eyes, I will be coming back to Custom Eyes to see Dr. Murphy and Kevork whenever I need an upgrade. read more

Based on Yelp reviews, I tried out Custom Eyes after moving from Brighton to Somerville. I can't sing their praises enough. I had an eye infection from contacts--it wasn't my first, so I recognized the symptoms and they gave me an appointment that same day. (only several hours after my call). Eye infections can take a while to heal, so I scheduled a follow-up several weeks later. I was not fully healed, so another appointment in the future. In the end, it took four appointments. Most were quick, 5-10 minutes. But they only charged me ONCE; Dr. Murphy was concerned about my eyes getting better, and clearly considered these checkups to be part of the single treatment. If I had been healed, I could have gone back to wearing contacts sooner, rather than waiting 6+ weeks to avoid extra payments. Kevork is awesome as well. I walked in for the third appointment, and he greeted me by name when I opened the door! How often do you get that kind of personal service? read more

Kevork will take care of you real well... After a less than stellar experience at another eye care office, I was pleased to find someone so straightforward... My fiancee did a lot of research and ended up deciding to try out these guys. She ordered her contacts on Sunday and got them on Tuesday (she's got astigmatism and always has to get 'custom' contacts). Since I just lost my glasses, I decided to give them a try too. Vision plans are horrible and pointless, don't get them. VSP (my vision plan) doesn't like to pay the offices money, so they'll cut the lenses themselves...ends up taking a week. But my lenses came in today, and Kevork had them in my frames within half an hour. What a boss. Going to go back to get some contacts I think, reasonable prices for Boston, and great service. read more

Dr. Murphy is fantastic. I hate things near my eyes and bright light make them water like crazy. I've had eye doctors laughing as I tried to sit still for a glaucoma test. Kevork is incredibly nice and was very helpful in picking out frames. He is nothing short of super friendly whenever you walk in the door. When I picked up my glasses, he was on vacation, and it took me about a year to actually go back in and get them adjusted (procrastination at its best). When I did, I was in and out in three minutes, with better fitting glasses and feeling good after some quality service. You can also schedule appointments online, which is pretty handy. read more

Only 20 minutes into my visit and I've already had an extremely positive experience. Dr. Kathleen Murphy is professional, interacts very well with her patients, and is a calming presence in the strange and complicated world of optometry. Kevork is kind, provides excellent customer service, and through his eyewear suggestions, shows that he genuinely cares about the patient/customer. I've had some pretty mediocre opthamological/optometrical experiences in the past, and I still can't get over how amazing the service was! I haven't had an exam in 2+ years, and despite wearing my last pair of contacts for longer than the suggested time period, Dr. Murphy was understanding of the situation. She went through my patient history fairly quickly but thoroughly, catching the little check mark I'd placed next to eye conditions my family members had and informing me of potential eye-related degeneration that I was at risk for. She also informed me of a condition I've apparently had for years but my past eye doctors had incorrectly diagnosed, and suggested corrective measures I should take, also unlike what my past eye doctors have done. It's clear that Dr. Murphy is well versed in her training and latest eye technology. After the patient history review, Dr. Murphy tested my current eye prescription. She then helped me with a new eye prescription, given my penchant for staring at a computer screen for more than 15 hours a day. She tested me for glaucoma, and dialated my eyes for furher testing. She is quite thorough with the exam, ensuring that every area that requires testing is covered. Dr. Murphy is great at making you feel comfortable and is honest about conditions that need to be taken care of. Kevork was honest about the costs - he had my insurer's information (Davis Vision) brought up immediately when I questioned one of the copays, and he even showed me the areas of coverage. Luckily, I have fantastic benefits, so most everything was covered; however, I did note that their designer frames cost at least $150 (Vogue, Kate Spade, etc.) to close to $500 (D&G, Oakley, et al.). Lenses also cost a good amount too, so if you have limited coverage, just be aware of what you'll have to pay out of pocket. read more

When a different eye doctor gave me a backwards prescription (farsighted when I am actually nearsighted) I decided to try Dr. Kathleen Murphy. Not only did she uncover the issue with my glasses, she also gave me a very thorough eye exam. She was patient with me when I had to think really hard about which lens looked best and she even made a suggestion as to what type of frame to look for. I came back on a different night with a friend to look for glasses and we roamed around the store trying on one after another. Kevork asked us a few times if we needed anything, but he wasn't at all overbearing. In the end I was down to two pair and let Kevork make the final decision. I have never gotten so many compliments on a pair of glasses. My glasses arrived very quickly and Kevork was very meticulous about making sure they fit properly. I love that they have extended hours and that you can book appointments online. My only gripe is that when I booked online it stated that dilation would be included in the appointment, but when I arrived I was told I would have to come back for that part of the exam. read more

Mr. Kevork and Dr. Murphy are both the nicest eye care professionals I've ever had. They are kind, considerate, and understands your needs. They greet each person individually and remember the customers. My da' and I go to this place, and when I went for the first time last month, they remembered my da' immediately. Custom Eyes is one of the best places that I have visited to get my glasses, contacts, and eye exam. Several of my friends visit Custom Eyes for their eye exams so I decided to give it a try after having trouble with my previous doctor. Dr. Murphy and Kevork are extremely friendly, and they remember my name every time I step in the shop. This was the best customer service that I have ever experienced. Things are a little expensive if your insurance isn't great. My glasses and lens cost over $300, but I really like them and try to wear them every chance that I get. read more

I like this place a lot! Before I went to Dr. Murphy, I had a bad experience at Sears optical (coughcambridgegalleriacough), which is really bad at caring patients. they gave me a wrong prescription and insisted it even though i told them i didn't feel comfortable. After hearing out that experience, Dr. Murphy suggested me to visit them again and adjust the prescription they gave me using her examination results as a reference. She tried to help me save money instead of getting as much profit as possible from the patient. The exam is thorough and Dr. Murphy was very careful to double check my sight to see if the results were consistent. I don't know about previous comments on 'hard to get the prescription to get glasses in other store', because she gave me a prescription. read more
