I came here for an exam a couple weeks ago and was so happy with my experience that I was shocked to see the low overall rating on here. But it looks like the 1 star reviews are at least a year old. If you're in the Cambridge area and need an optometrist, go here! Truly. I stopped into and called several optometry offices around Harvard Square, and this was the only one where I immediately felt a genuinely welcoming, no-nonsense vibe. That was NOT my experience elsewhere. Harvard Square Eye Care is clearly not trying to scam you or push overpriced frames. I never felt pressured to buy anything, and I really appreciated having the option to do traditional dilation instead of being steered toward the more expensive imaging option that my insurance doesn't cover - something most other places didn't even offer. It's such a relief to find a practice that understands the simple need for an eye exam and prescription, especially for those of us who just want the most affordable pair of glasses possible. Honest, transparent, and refreshing. Ignore the negative reviews and go here! read more

So furious right now! Just had my 6 year old grandson's glasses checked by 2 different optometrists because he has been complaining for 5 days since we picked them up that they were making him dizzy. GUESS WHAT?? YUP, the RX for one eye was way off, and yet they sent him out the door without even an adjustment to the frames (which we had done somewhere else), never mind checking the lense! All we kept getting told was "his first pair, needs to get used to them"!!! The most ignorant, rude staff I've ever come across. Next step, Board Of Registration. It is a horrible place and very bad customer experience. Don't go to this place. My daughter did her exam this morning for normal glass and contact lens fitting. Dr. did nothing and did not even give her a set of contacts to try on for exam and bill more than other eye doctors for the contact lens fitting. I called back and ask the clerk about it. They lied and had a thousand reasons saying they did the fitting. I have never run into such a bad and disappointing experience at an eye doctor office before. Horrible customer service! I have been going to HSEC for several years and have been pleased in the past. The optometrists appear to change frequently and I've had a different one every time (which says something). My most recent visit was horrible. The man at the front desk did not acknowledge me for several minutes when I came in, so I sat down. I was then spoken to in a very rude manner. More importantly though, the optometrist had a hard time explaining things and came across as inarticulate and unprofessional. It did not leave me feeling confident in her exam. I had to return because my contact lens trial was not sufficient. I requested a second set of trial lenses and was told I needed another appointment because I was going from mulifocal to single focus (even though I've had single focus previously). The appointment happened to be on Harvard move-in day and between that and construction, traffic was horrible. I called ahead to say I was running late. When I arrived I was told that I needed to reschedule because I was 13 min late and they had a 10 min policy. I understand I was late but they gave no accommodation for the situation. All I really needed was to pick up the new set of trial lenses that we previously spoke about. This should not have taken more than 5-10 minutes. I do not recommend HSEC and I will not be returning. read more

The first glasses I purchased from Dr. Dickerman on 9/20 were the wrong prescription...which she corrected. I missed a follow-up appointment to make adjustments to my glasses in November and tried to set up another appointment. Was told by her office that the doctor wasn't sure when she would return to Martha's Vineyard to see patients. I called a few more times, but could never get a date for her return. She did call me once in March of 2023 to ask about the issue I was having with my glasses and said she would find a time for me to see her. I have never heard from her since...nor do I want to. I have no confidence in Dr. Dickerman. read more

I just had a fantastic experience at Harvard Square Eye Care. I'm visiting from Los Angeles and I sat on my glasses in my hotel room this morning... the hotel concierge mentioned this place so after my first meeting I went there. Super nice people in an upbeat setting.. it's obvious they like working there. I showed my glasses to the person I spoke to when I called and she showed them to their expert who was on her way out the door. Instead of leaving the expert looked at my glasses and said that she'd try to repaIr them immediately... I sat down in their show room and waited and listened to fun music. 5-10 minutes later she came out with my glasses repaired. She had me put them on and adjusted them to better fit my face. They were great! Then, they wouldn't let me pay them for their services!!!! Amazing. They obviously service their clients extremely well. If I lived in Boston I would buy all of my glasses from them. read more

I went to Harvard Square eyecare in Cambridge on 3-5-2021 got examined told to choose frame and three months later got call, my glasses are ready. I went in tried it and informed attendee "it's blurry". After attempts I was told to take it home and try for a while!I did an return, the glasses was sent out again! returned months later still blurry. Frustrated went to MGH got a new prescription and handed it to Shannon in 11-2021. I waited to hear and cal I was told have been in for a week now!! Same day 2-7-22, anxious received my new frame and glasses again "I can't see, it's blurry!!". Now after a year I can't see to write this YELP!!! I WOULDN'T SEND MY WORST ENEMY TO SUCH AGONY!!! Had a contact stuck in my eye, office was rude to me when I told them I would not sign up for the online portal. Dr. didn't introduce herself or call me by name. Touched near my eye without gloves then tried to sell me $39 eye drops. They made me use my medical, not my vision insurance for this which requires prior authorization from my PCP. What a pain. This place is super-good. Every doctor I've seen has been both friendly and professional. I highly recommend this place for glasses / contact lens prescriptions and for whatever eye-related troubles you might have (allergic conjunctivitis, anyone?). Also, do retinal imaging instead of the old-fashioned eye dilation thing, and have an instrument for measuring eye pressure that doesn't involve hitting your eyeball with a puff of air. So, if you hate those things... this is a good choice. I know there's some super-negative reviews here, but... I'm pretty sure they're really just disgruntled exceptions. I've been to both this location and the Davis Square one many times over the past decade and been treated well every time. read more

I had an extremely poor experience here... they made an error in my prescription and then refused a full refund. They tried again and the glasses still "pulled" and were uncomfortable. They basically stole $200 from me for poor workmanship. I think they should not be in business. read more

Very poor customer service. I have a very busy schedule and had an appointment but accidentally went to the wrong location. Not yet being late, I called the correct one and they told me I was still ok to come in. I proceed to get there in less than 10 minute, tell them I called, then they simply dismissed that and refused my service and told me to reschedule. I now have no contacts for a due week, and will have to deal with daily migraines as a result of my impaired vision. read more

I went in for my first and last appointment with HSEC last week. I needed a routine eye exam. I wear contacts and the optometrist recommended that I try a new contact lens brand. She gave me a trial pair, and upon check-out I was told that I received a "contact fitting" on top of the routine eye exam that was not covered by insurance. This cost $165. The "contact fitting" was not requested-- I was perfectly happy with my old contacts. I sent an email to HSEC about the lack of professionalism concerning an unrequested, over-charged procedure. I received no response. Perhaps costs of all procedures can be provided in large print at the front desk and customers can be asked which procedures they would like to undergo. This simple solution would take little effort and be far more transparent. read more

Went to Harvard Eye Care for a routine eye exam in March, was asked to get an appointment and go to another location for a fundus photo because they did not have the equipment to do it at the Belmont location. I was told it was included in my routine exam. So 2 days later I made the trip to the Harvard Square location for the fundus photo and I was asked to pay a $40 charge which I was not happy with but did pay. Two month later my husband received a text on his phone with a link to a bill for $85 for the same photo and exam. Upon calling them to get an explanation we were told that if we don't want to pay we have to ask my primary care for a back dated referral. When I explained that we were told that it was part of routine exam Kathy (the person I had on the phone) said she did not have time to discuss it and that if I did want to pay it would go to collection. All that after having been clients there for years and bought many pairs of glasses at their Belmont location. Well that is the last they'll see of us. read more

I had a great experience at Harvard Square Eye Care for a regular eye exam. Dr. Cuomo was very detailed and answered all my questions during my visit. I only requested my prescription and the staff was great about it and did not try to convince me to buy new eyeglasses. They do have a nice selection if interested in a new pair. read more

I left this store feeling very ripped off - so ripped off that I called back and canceled my order. I checked out this store because of its "Best of Boston" award and my hunt for some designer frames. The store seems to have designer frames, but upon closer examination they carry nothing but run-of-the-mill, made in China junk that you can get from a discount, online glasses store for half the price. The store takes my insurance, which gives me $130 frame allowance. I left having purchased some glasses with a list price of $395, minus my $130 allowance, equals $265. When I got home I looked them up online to show my wife - only to learn the same glasses online MSRP for $175 and can be bought for $105. I also learned these were not designer, made in Italy or Germany, but generic made in China frames. How could glasses online WITHOUT insurance possibly cost half what I paid using my insurance at an accepted outlet? I was so outraged. I called the store back and told them to tear up the order and credit my credit card. The only positive thing I can say is that they did credit me without any fuss. One of the worst places in the world! They are running a racket!! The optometrist who saw me tried to dilate my eyes after I told her, I was breastfeeding and did not want any kind of chemicals/meds. She insisted that it would not affect my breastmilk...yes I know but I do not care what you have to say. No drugs means no drugs. Then she tried to tell me that I could pump and dump if I was worried about it getting into my milk supply...but once again...no means no. Not sure why these people cannot respect their patients wishes. Your are not a damn medical doctor and I do not want YOU to give me any kind of chemicals/meds...end of story. I almost felt like filing a complaint with the state medical board. Furthermore, they made up all kinds of add on charges. I will not be returning here as my insurance covers everything fully but for some reason this place always seems to over the maximum limit. I came here because I needed a new eye doctor and I liked their selection of glasses. I was happy with my glasses so I decided to go back for a following year. What a mistake!!! 4 visits later and more money later I feel completely ripped off and taken advantage of. I had wanted contacts and when I told the doctor about the discomfort she said to come back for a second check before I picked up the contacts I had already paid for. I thought she was being really nice but then I was charged for a "medical visit" and with the cost of special eye drops and now a prescription and all these added instructions for how to deal with the discomfort from the contacts vs prescribing a different brand -- I was told I shouldn't wear contacts and to come back for a follow-up for yet another "medical visit" checkup. Might I add that this was my 4th trip there! I will not be going back to this business and do NOT recommend them. The doctor was very nice and pleasant but after all the extra visits, no answers and extra money spent -- I am VERY DISAPPOINTED!! read more

Tragedy struck, as tragedies often do, on a beautiful summer day when I was least expecting it. I was casually strolling through Harvard Square when the left lens of my prescription sunglasses inexplicably fell out of the frame. Somehow I had lost a screw. "Good thing this happened right in front of Harvard Square Eye Care!" I thought. A little background: I worked my way through college as a lab tech at a LensCrafters, so I knew this was the easiest fix in the world. Replacing a screw takes about thirty seconds and--at LensCrafters at least--costs the customer nothing. Screws cost almost nothing and the labor cost is negligible. So I pop into Harvard Square Eye Care and explain the situation. They take my glasses from me. "That'll be ten dollars. They'll be ready in half an hour." I laugh, because obviously they're joking. Wait. They're not joking. Half an hour? Ten dollars? I walk out, a bit stunned. Did that just happen? I do a lap around the block and decide to go back and rescue my glasses. I'm not paying $10 and waiting half an hour unless this flippin' screw turns my glasses into X-ray goggles or something. I squint in the sun the rest of the way home and repair my glasses myself. I'm all for the mom and pops, but not if they're going to fleece me. What kind of rube do they take me for? read more

I paid $50 to have nosepads installed onto a pair of free glasses from Coastal.com--it took a week (they had to send them to another place--the other shops where I've had this done just did the installation in-house in about 20 minutes for much less cost). I got them back and they broke the next semester. Found out that the warranty is only 6 months (really? the other shops covered for 1 year, which I thought was industry standard, and minimally expected for $50). Paid another $50 because I was desperate and on my last pair of contact lenses--I needed these ASAP to finish my last exams and papers. Not worth it. If you don't have a backup-pair of eyeglasses, try to find another place to get nosepads installed a) more quickly, b) more affordably, and c) with a warranty that gives a normal customer a chance. read more

After calling to confirm which of my two health coverages they didn't take and making what I thought was an educated decision to go to them anyway, I fought my way through a thunderstorm to get to my appointment. The doctor was 8 minutes late arriving in the office for my 10am appointment. Then, after I finally got in for the appointment, she asked me a question about my existing contacts which allowed her to tell me that my current brand had been discontinued. This meant that I would have to pay $240 for a new fitting (for the record, my last doctor charged me $80 for a fitting). Had this question been asked over the phone, I would have told them that I would be looking for another doctor that took both of my coverages so that I wouldn't have to pay this fee. Instead, she wasted two hours of my time (travel plus the wait), and we accomplished nothing. I was unimpressed. read more

I've had extremely mixed feelings about this place. Although I've had decent exams here, I've also gotten new glasses from them in the past two years that gave me SPLITTING headaches, to the point that I don't wear them anymore. I have to wonder if it was because I was reusing my old frames, which I like and don't feel the need to replace. Each time, they reverted to my old lenses, but I was still charged for the new lenses. My contact lens fittings, by contrast, have been very good. I have no objections to the equipment or the doctors there, but paying for lenses that give me a splitting headache and a distorted view of the world two years running means I can't, in good conscience, give them a good recommendation. (Particularly since they say they match my prescription.) read more

I came here for an eye exam and new glasses. The customer service was not quite up to the standards I'm used to for dropping nearly $300 after insurance. The doctor and... assistant, I think, were very nice. But my eye exam turned into more of a training session for the assistant. I didn't really want to wait through all the instruction. The doctor even forgot to tell me things like, "this may hurt" only hearing her tell the assistant to tell the patient that it may hurt, afterwards. I think having to wait while the doctor lectured the assistant on sweeping the floor was the most insulting. The frames were very expensive, and after reading the other reviews here I am afraid that I too, got ripped off. Granted, the frames look amazing, but next time I'm taking my chances elsewhere. read more

I have purchased glasses at this store for years and have always received excellent service. I usually spend a great deal of money when I buy glasses and contacts. I need new glasses so I strolled in there yesterday and a very rude woman "kind of waited" on me. She was very condescending and spoke to me as if I wasn't a serious customer, or a customer without insurance, or dirt poor. I was DISGUSTED with her tone, her inability to look at me when she was answering my questions. This is such a pity because I really love this store. These guys were great. The staff was super friendly and accommodating to my schedule in regards to making an appointment, and were more so when I got to the office. I was seen promptly, and the exam was nice and quick, yet thorough. After the exam, the doctor helped me pick out some frames (offering some helpful advice as to what looked good and what didn't). I can't comment too much on the price as my insurance, VSP, covered pretty much everything; I had to pay a bit more for the lenses I got, but that was to be expected. At any rate, I have no complaints about these guys, and would definitely go back for my future eye care needs! read more

I have awful problems with my eyes, so going to the eye doctor gives me the nerves that most people get when going to the dentist. I started going to the Harvard location, but switched to Porter when it opened because it's so close to my house. The Harvard location wasn't bad, but Porter is terrible. I had to wait an HOUR the time to get seen, and the doctor didn't apologize or even mention the delay. Instead, she rushed through my exam and wouldn't take time to answer my questions fully. She also decided that I should have my eyes dilated, which was frustrating because I could have been doing that for the HOUR I was waiting to be seen. So, I had to come back a week later and the experience was exactly the same. I'm changing eye doctors now because eyes are too serious to be left in the hands of an inept doctor. read more

I'm looking at these other reviews and see that there is some kind of schism. People either really love or really dislike this company, and I can't see half of it, because I LOVE this company! I went to both offices, in Harvard and Porter Squares, pretty much to shop for frames. I heard this was a locally owned business and that matters to me, and that they had a surprising selection of frames. Well, that hardly even begins to describe it! I've been wearing glasses since I was a toddler, and after visiting the Harvard Square office, was impressed with the overall quality and variety of frames. Expensive? They have frames for about $150 to about $700, as I recall. Considering that the majority of the lines they sell are handmade, that seems very reasonable, especially after looking at what is available on Newbury Street. Unlike many other eyeglass places, these guys seem to love titanium, although other places say it's hard to work with and fit. Apparently these guys have overcome that. I saw and tried a bunch of frames I liked from France, Germany, Italy England, and Japan, all handmade, and just handling them, I could feel the difference from other "good deal" frames. You get what you pay for. There were quite a few people working there. The guy who helped me was very pleasant and helpful and the woman there also showing frames was quite energetic and seemed to cut to the chase nicely. At first it seemed a bit odd going back and forth, but it yielded some nice frames. When I asked about more styles and colors, they quickly told me of the Porter Square location and off I went. Very different feeling store, and I was there on a Saturday. The Porter location was incredibly busy, and at first I thought the guy out front was overwhelmed with people picking up new glasses and people looking at frames. But he was amazingly knowledgable about how different frames and prescriptions would work and was calm, smiling and joking, all while taking care of 4 or 5 people. He greeted me immediately, as did the lady behind the reception desk, who was also calm in a sea of activity. They aren't kids, and seemed to take the hubbub in stride. This guy asked me questions I've never been asked when buying glasses, and at first I thought it was odd, but watching people picking up their new glasses and the profuse thanks and smiles, I figured he must know what's what. He was also "training" someone, is the best way I can think of it, how to use a complicated lens for the first time that he was picking up. Interestingly, he showed me some of the same styles as the Harvard location, which was comforting, I suppose, but then, after letting me browse, nixing some choices and then adjusting some others, all while helping other people, he just grabbed a frame out of another case and said "humor me." It was totally different than what I had thought I wanted, and it was brilliant! I ended up with that frame, and I love it! He then, after sort of placing me in a queue, attended very closely to someone ordering glasses with a bunch of lens issues i didn't understand, but he did keep cheking around to see that everyone was happy and interjected a bit here and there to people as he was very detailed in his help to the lady he was "creating glasses" for, as he said! He looked at me and said "you're up next, so don't worry" and I just couldn't help but think it's worth the time. He never rushed her, and she left smiling after placing her order, and he never rushed me, either. He explained the materials the lenses are made of, talked me OUT of spending what would have been a wasted $100 on a lens material that I didn't need, and made it all clear to me. And all this is while patients are arriving, leaving, etc. He also reminded me that they offer a courtesy discount on frames to people with no eyeglasses insurance! That was a total shocker! But, I never turn down a discount. Sure, I spent real money and I got real, beautiful glasses by Kio Yamato, and I've gotten tons of compliments for my awesome frames. This guy said my fairly high prescription would be impossible for people to figure out in the lens material we went with, for less money, and he was right! As I said, I've worn glasses since I was a little kid. This company and their people taught me more in this purchase about glasses, lenses and such, than I had learned in my entire life of getting glasses! The glasses were ready in 3 days, as promised, and are beautiful. The time and attention spent at pickup, with fitting, cleaning instructions, a few goodies thrown in, and making sure I could really see well and was happy was a nice surprise, and shows that after you pay, you still matter. By the way, it's nice to say that the guy at Porter who was so helpful, even while he was so busy, was also named David. Overall, nice, helpful friendly people in both busy offices. Insurance or not, I'm getting my next eye exam there. This is a class act. read more

I, like my fellow reviewers, was in need of a new eye doctor! I went to a place before and was extremely unsatisfied, so I did my Google search and found Harvard Square Eye Care. I originally wanted some sort of corporate eye care (Lens Crafters or something) but my insurance doesn't take them... but now I need to reel it in and get to the point. Initial thoughts: I called them up on a Tuesday and asked for an appointment. I was surprised that they could fit me in at a convenient time (3:30 p.m.) the next day. Perhaps I am old school, but I expected a handful of days / week wait. When I got there: I am always that guy who is super early for things. Call it anxiety or something, but I hate being late. I showed up 30 minutes early (way too early, sorry, but it was too cold outside to fiddle around) and the doctor was able to see me within 10 minutes (after I completed my paperwork). During the experience: The OD was great. She was through, explained what she was doing, asked appropriate questions, and made me feel comfortable. She did not pressure me or try hard to get me in and out quickly. I was extremely impressed. So why didn't they get five stars? As others said, the selection of glasses was a little sparse. I ended up going elsewhere for glasses (but, what I was impressed with, was that the OD outwardly asked if I want to look at glasses there or shop around a bit -- props for not being high pressured). Final thoughts: I am a fan and I would recommend Harvard Square Eye Care. read more

I chose this place because of their comprehensive list on their website of brands that they carry. They list hundreds of brands, every name you can think of is there! If you are choosing them based on this list, be warned that the list needs some updating. Call them up and make sure they are still able to order certain brands before you go in. They have tons of glasses in the store for you to try on but they are all pretty basic looking and very expensive. I feel that for the look of their frames, you could go to Walmart and pay $100 for something similar - which is exactly what I plan to do. I was really pleased with the doctor. Yes, she did train the assistant during my appointment but that didn't bother me. She's a great eye doctor and she gives it to you straight. I can see her being my doctor for years to come. Overall the staff is friendly but some of them, okay one of them, can be very abrupt when he it gets busy and he seems to rush people. read more

Unfair business practice and very bad manners. I came to the Harvard Square Eyecare at the advice of my OD from the Harvard University Health Service as the shop was around the corner. I ordered a simple pair of reading glasses ---- just to read books ( I have other glasses as well). I was told that I had to have UV protection, which was an extra $82. Understandably, I was perplexed as that UV cover raised the end price by 34%. Yet I paid in full and consulted my OD. The latter responded to me via e-mail as saying that there was no need for UV-cover as these were reading glasses for use inside. I called the shop, first I was promised the reimbursement of $ 82. Next, I got a call from someone who presented herself as the owner: I was verbally humiliated and abused. As if it was not enough the third call was to inform me that my order was canceled. It is an unfair business practice and very bad manners. I am Harvard alumni, I feel bad that a business practice that pretends to be associated with Harvard allows for such an awful attitude towards a customer. read more

I stopped going here 6 years ago because I wasn't happy with the service. Then today when I tried to order new glasses at my current optometrist, I couldn't because someone at Harvard Square Eye Care mixed up my old record with another person's, so my insurance was billed for their prescription. So, instead of a quick trip to go order my glasses I spent the afternoon sorting this mess out. I got it resolved (and the woman at the Dunster location who helped straighten it out was helpful and apologetic) but I still haven't placed my glasses order because I ran out of time today. It was a huge waste of my time and totally unnecessary. I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 because the people I talked to there at least were very apologetic once they realized the error and made sure to fix it right away. read more

I'm reviewing both the Harvard and Porter Square stores in this. I had checkups at both places. Harvard Square: I went here last year. It was a mistake. First off, I had to wait 20 minutes for my appointment. When I finally saw the doctor, the appointment took forever. She was very friendly, but extremely slow. When we were done, she told me that I would need another appointment to finish up. I've never had to do a follow up on a basic eye checkup. So I come back for the second checkup, and now I need one more follow up to check the new lenses and see if I'm having any trouble with them. OK - so the place was a mistake. I should have learned my lesson, right? Wrong. Porter Square: I went here a few weeks ago - mainly because the location is so convenient. My doctor was friendly, my appointment started on time, and the whole process was super quick. There were no follow ups, or second follow ups necessary. The 'contact fitting' (which confuses me since nothing about my contacts changed - why do I need to pay for the 'fitting' again?) was about $60. Great, right? Wrong. So they tell me that if I order my contacts through them I can use my insurance discount (which I do not get with online purchases). Here is where it gets tricky - the person on the phone tells me that the price is $199, plus I get a $20 discount. Now in my head, I'm thinking this means I'm paying $179 minus the ~$140 my insurance is covering, so I owe these folks ~$40. He asks for my credit info, I give it to him. When I get my bill, it is for over $60. So obviously I call - and now it seems I'm mistaken. The $199 is including the discount - duh. No apologies for any misunderstandings, or anything like that. So I guess here is the thing about this place. They try to gouge you - whether it's on unecessary follow ups, extra charges or overcharges. If you don't mind that sort of thing, this is your place. In need of a new eye doctor, I really just spun the proverbial globe and my finger landed on Harvard Square Eye Care. It's close to home, close to work, so I figured why not? Fortunately, I made a good choice. My first visit wasn't great because the office was running way behind. I opted to reschedule for the following week instead of waiting an hour, which didn't get things off on the right foot. But without that little snafu, this review would most certainly be five stars. The staff and my optometrist were wonderful -- friendly, professional, and down-to-Earth. They made me feel at home and did two things that really hit home: 1. My doctor gave me an extra pair of contacts (my prescription, of course) to make sure I'd have a back-up as I decided where I wanted to order from. 2. There was absolutely no pressure to purchase my contacts here. They told me the price and said, "Feel free to shop around, though." This was much different from previous experiences. In the end, I purchased from here because I'd much rather support a local business that cares about its customers. Great experience. I definitely recommend this place for your eyes. read more
