I've been going to Custom Eyes for the last 8 years and gladly recommend them to anyone who needs contacts, glasses or an eye exam. Despite the fact that I no longer live near Central, I choose to continue to be a customer because the service is awesome. Kevork is one of the nicest people I have ever met and both he and Kathleen remember me whenever I go in there. A few examples of awesome customer service: -I recently ordered prescription sunglasses and two pairs of contacts, within a week I received a call letting me know they were ready. -Last year when I was looking to use up my FSA, Kevork worked with me to get a pair of frames which met my budget and got them to me promptly. -Recently, I broke a lens on a pair of sunglasses. I presented Kevork with a lens to replace it with, he swapped it out on the spot. When I asked how much it would be, he told me it was free of charge. read more

Walked in almost on a whim to get my scratched lenses replaced. Figured it would take a few days for them verify my prescription with the last optometrist I saw, order the lenses, etc. Turned out my insurance covered an eye exam--again, figured it would take a couple days before there'd be a free appointment. But no, the optometrist had an opening in just an hour! After the quick but thorough exam, they told me that they could create my new lenses on site and install them in my frames and it would take only about fifteen minutes! I bought my most recent pair of glasses here. I looked around at a half-dozen or so stores, and this one seemed to have the best combination of selection and price for the sorts of styles I liked. This was also the first time in a while that I went to a store for my eye exam instead of to my eye doctor. Their Optometrist was very thorough -- even dialated my eyes, which I've never had a store eye doctor do. And on top of that, they took my insurance for the whole cost of the visit. Finally, it's a small, locally owned shop, with great customer service. The owner was the one who adjusted my glasses when I came to pick them up, and I haven't need to have them adjusted in the nine months since. Update: Just got a prescription for progressives filled here. Once again, I have nothing but positive things to say about the experience. Kevork was incredibly helpful in figuring out countless details of what my insurance (Davis Vision) will and won't pay for, and I ended up getting the entire pair of glasses for not much more than the cost of the frames alone. This pair has proven a little more finicky to adjust since the frames are larger and heavier than my old pair, and Kevork has greeted me with a smile every time I've come by for small tweeks to the earpieces. I've also appreciated his advice on adjusting to the progressive lenses. Can't think of a reason why I'd ever shop anywhere else! read more

Dr. Murphy and Kevork are both super charming and helpful. Dr Murphy does the eye exams, Kevork sweet talks you and sells you glasses. They're a great team! I've never had any trouble getting in for an appointment or getting refills on my lenses. The turn-around is quick, and the pricing is comparable to "discount" sites online. They do take vision insurance-- if you don't have any, they have a listing of their prices for those without insurance. It's not very much more, from what I can tell. Dr. Murphy is smart, personable and really easy to work with. Kevork is super nice and makes it a point to learn your name and chat with you while you wait, and he's great at helping you pick glasses that make you look amazing. The only problem is the wait itself- I've been here three times and never been seen at the time I was booked for, and today I watched another customer have to rebook her appointment because the 10-15 extra minute wait would make her late to her next engagement. It's worth it to me because I like how I'm treated by staff, but I recommend expecting to not be seen until 20 minutes past your appt time so you don't book your day too tightly. Things happen, some people take longer to see than others and Dr. Murphy treats her patients like people- not like time slots. read more

I have been a customer of Custom Eyes for about ten years. I live and work in the neighborhood. Custom Eyes is everything that a local business should be. Kevork is a gem and his nephew John is following in his footsteps. They know most of their customers by name, they are excellent opticians, they stand by their work absolutely, they will fix frames that you dropped or sat on, if fixable, with a smile (and no charge). Bottom line: if you live anywhere near the Central Square, T-stop friendly location, there is NO good reason to go anywhere else. I had read the good reviews of Custom Eyes, and I believe you all. If anything, the other reviews are perhaps not as effusive as they could be. Kind and professional, thoughtful and thorough, genuine and generous. I saw Dr. Murphy for an eye exam and found her both personable and professional. She answered in detail my questions about what the various tools and tests were for. (I ask a lot of questions, I'm just a very curious person, it's not that I was skeptical.) Mr. Kervork was kind enough to completely fix my old glasses, including replacing my clever little paper-clip with a real screw! He also took the time to show me any pair of glasses I wanted to see, and was not at all pushy. I am a very frugal person as well, and was actually quite impressed with the range of affordable frames for sale. Note: if you have BCBS insurance, you get 25% off of frames. Also, go ahead and get your contacts lenses from these kind local folks, they will match the prices you can find on the anonymous internet. The only non-effusive thing I would mention is that their website is underwhelming, but don't be misled into thinking that they are anything but efficient and up to date as a business. Beyond that, they are kind. An eye exam is just not going to be the most glamorous thing you do this year, but this business makes it a delight. Sadly, my prescription is very stable, so I won't need to go too often, but at least perhaps I can help bring them in some other good folks who need some specs or an eye exam. read more

The service here is high quality. The greeting you get when you come in the door is lovely, and the shop itself is open an airy. Custom Eyes seems to have a lot of open slots for appointments, so it was very easy for me to get a time that worked out for me. I was treated by Dr. Murphy. Dr. Murphy surprised me when she asked my husband at his appointment if I had luck in my job search (my husband had told her last time that I was looking). The good doc might've been stiff during my checkup, but she really showed attention on a personal level when she remembered me. +5 to bed-side manner. read more

This was the best experience I had shopping for new frames, and I've been to quite a number of stores. Upon walking in, I was greeted by Kevron, the owner. He was super friendly and told me to have a look around and ask for his help whenever I needed it. He was sweet and kind, and not at all "in your face" like other people interested in making a sale. All the glasses cases there are open, so you can walk around and grab a handful of frames to try, and then park yourself at one of their mirror-equipped desks to try them on in peace and quiet. If you want help, Kevron is totally there for you. Further, he knows what's up -- he knows the selection, and he's done this for so long that he can tell you exactly what frame suits you and what frame doesn't -- right down to the size of the bridge. Fantastic. The frames collection at Custom Eyes is spectacular. They have a TON of good looking and good quality frames for a range of budgets -- from the basic ~$200 to the higher-end ~$400 frames. The optometrist, Kathleen, is also extremely helpful and friendly and freely shared her opinion with me on the frames I was considering since I had no one with me to bounce looks off of. This was the case even though I didn't have an appointment with her (I did my exam elsewhere) and she'd never met me. People came into the store while I was there, and both she and Kevron knew them by name. Finally, your frames can be ready in the SAME DAY - a service I wasn't expecting and that made this place 10x better in my book. If only I could have settled on one of the two pairs I fell in love with, I would've been wearing them right now. I couldn't though, so I'll be back there next week. read more

The service was nice, and they have a good selection compared to other eyeglass stores I've visited. However, they were inaccurate with the price that I would be charged for my contacts. They said I would get a $50 rebate with my contact purchase but that rate had expired the week before and I only received a $20 one (with a lot of struggle on the contact brand's website!). This was after I asked for the rebate's expiration date at my exam, which I was told would last through 2017 - though of course with no guarantee, they just didn't check. I also sat for around 50 minutes in the waiting room without contacts/glasses for my eye dilation after being told it should take 20-30 minutes, which is uncomfortable if you have horrible vision like me! But they are friendly, it would just be better if they were friendly and efficient. read more

Not too shabby for an eye place. The optometrist and the man who took care of ordering my contacts were very nice, but they weren't on the complete up and up when it came to pricing. The contacts that the optometrist chose for me were rather expensive, and she really didn't give me a range of choices. Generally, optometrists seem to recommend the latest and greatest when the older brands work just as well. It would be nice to meet one that had the best interest of the costumer in mind, budget included. I chose to order contacts directly through Custom Eyes because I didn't want to have to go through the hassle of ordering contacts online myself through my insurance. The folks at Custom Eyes tried to make it sound like I would be getting a better deal if I ordered the glasses through them with my insurance and bought the contacts from them on top of that without coverage. I did not agree, but listened politely and said I would think about it. However, after all that, when I opted against buying glasses from them and asked if I could reorder my old contact brand that my old eye doctor recommended, they were very accommodating and there was no problem ordering what I wanted. So, as much as they want me to buy the most expensive eye care stuffs all at their store, they weren't too pushy when it came to the bottom line. They will take care of your eyes properly, but I will probably will try a new place next year to avoid the sales pitches. read more

My respect for this place is absolutely tremendous. I have lived in 7 different countries, and due to having had been short-sighted since the age of 10, have seen countless optometrists. This is by far the best one of the lot. You know how people will respond "Trust me, you will know it when it happens" to a question about what love at first sight feels like? Well, it is kind of what happened with Custom Eyes. I never really knew what exceptional service was until coming here and now I never want to see another one. Many businesses, in the stress of day-to-day routines and meeting revenue targets to survive (or excel), often forget about the people who keep them alive: the customers. This is not so at all over here. Every time I come here, I get a warm friendly feeling and will stay behind a bit chatting to them if it is not too busy. The people are what pushed me to rate this 5 stars. In terms of equipment, style of glasses, quality of examinations, they do very well. However, without the excellent customer service, I would have left this review at 3 or 4 stars. To put it simply: it is 150%. I love how upfront and direct they are about things, and how patient they are in answering my questions about insurance, eye health, glasses, ect. The patience to me, though, is what really makes me feel valued. I am one of those people who NEED to absolutely love something before investing in it. And when it comes to buying glasses, this is doubly so. The staff at custom eyes were very accomodating to my demands, concerns and worked with me to find the PERFECT frames for my glasses that fit my budget and is still going strong after two years of near-daily use. Most other optometrists and retail lens/glasses stores seem to rush me out or not be on the same page as me in trying to do the delicate juggle between fashionable and budget-friendly. TIP FOR WORKING FOLKS: If you want to book an evening appointment, make sure to do it in advance and make sure you can come to the appointment time. They get quite busy during these hours, and although Custom Eyes is as accomodating as a business of its kind can be, you will avoid a lot of frustration. I love this place! I got my first pair of glasses there and had a great experience!! My husband and I tried so hard to find an eye doctor for me since I really needed a pair of new glasses. I've been here for annual exams twice now, and they have been excellent. The only minor issue I have had is that they always seem to be busy! But, give them a little bit of patience, and I promise it's worth it. Dr. Murphy is very knowledgeable, professional, and genuine. Out of several eye doctors that I had seen recently, she was the first to encourage me to move from Acuvue to Acuvue2 lenses, which turned out to be very comfortable. And the same price. I was hesitant about ordering contacts through them the first time, but they were very happy to beat the prices at 1800contacts and even showed me how to get the rebates done. Definitely worth going out of your way for. And they're right on the subway. read more

So is the opometrist--she did a thorough review and the first prescription was correct--hooray! It did take me two days to adjust to the new glasses--now they are perfect. I went here with my boyfriend so he could get glasses, and we were very satisfied. Dr. Murphy was very nice and thorough. Kevork was equally helpful. He is very talkative though, so you might end up staying longer than planned. Frame selection was good. Overall this place was great. We would definitely recommend. Only complaint is that he had to wait a little bit longer than anticipated before his eye exam. My vision insurance starts in January, and I will be going here to get my glasses. Just FYI, we could not disagree more with "Mrs. Feel G.'s" review. I would put little weight on her comments. I'm sure her experience was the exception, not the rule. read more

I lost some magnetic clip-on shades to my regular pair of glasses. Mental note, stop using pants belt hooks as clip-on holders. Unfortunately, they're so old, I couldn't get a new pair of clip-ons from my optometrist back home. I desperately needed a pair of prescription sunglasses. Enter Custom Eyes, conveniently located in my neighborhood. Oh, yes. The name is punny. Hee. They had a great selection of sunglasses from recognizable brands including Oakley, Ray-Ban, and Fendi. Kevork was really nice and helpful in selecting frames to fit my narrow face. He brought out like 20 pairs for me to try on and left me alone to try on as I pleased. He also was honest in helping me choose flattering frames. I settled on a pair of Pradas and he was able to obtain my prescription from my current pair of regular glasses. So why not 5 stars? He said they'd be ready in a few days and that he would call to let me know I could return to pick them up. The days passed, no call. They ended up taking just over a week. He had me try them on in the store so he could adjust them as necessary and said I should return and let him know how I was doing with them. Needless to say they are doing awesome and protecting my eyes as well as the surrounding skin from harmful UV rays. An almost perfect experience and fantastic customer service. I can't say I've had *bad* service elsewhere, but Kevork and Dr. Murphy at Custom Eyes have made me a customer for life. The patience, friendliness, and overall quality of service are unparalleled. While choosing frames, Kevork helped me go through many styles - both expensive and not - to help find the best fit for my face and spent as long as needed until I was satisfied. I never felt rushed, never felt pressured, and felt confident in his assessments. I just returned from an exam at Custom Eyes and could not be happier. They are quite affordable - a complete contact lens exam without insurance is only $110. Dr Murphy is so amiable, and gives very thorough and clear explanations. She doesn't try to push you into more expensive products either - she gave me great information about cheaper contact options, and when I mentioned I wear slightly out-of-prescription glasses but couldn't afford an exam for those too, she didn't try to convince me otherwise. She gave a very comprehensive exam, with some little checks on aspects I'd never had done before. The rest of the staff is very friendly as well. The location is very convenient - the Central Square t-stop as well as many bus lines are half a block away. Their hours are favorable as well - opening at 9:30, and staying open until 7:30, allowing me to come in for a follow up dilation appointment without killing the productiveness of my day! read more

I used Custom Eyes for an eye exam and also bought new frames and had the lenses updated in my old frames. The eye exam was standard but what stood out for me (and will bring me back) is the guy who helped me pick out my new frames - I'm guessing from other reviews that his name is Kevork. His style was exactly what I needed - he asked me questions about what I was looking for (some frames that were more stylish/interesting than the plain black ones I typically use) and then took me around the store having me try on different frames. The best part is that he's brutally honest - he'll have you try on a frame and immediately shoot them down if they don't work. The frames I ended up with were NOT ones I would have taken off the shelf myself but I loveeeeee them and get lots of compliments on them. When I went to pick them up, he also did a final fitting to my face, checking how they fit behind my ears and then adjusting them with some machine in the back of the shop. If you're more fashion savvy than I am and don't need the guidance, you might not need Custom Eyes, but if you're looking for a place where they can help you with the decision making I can't say enough about this store! read more

I agree with the high quality of the optometry here. But they make it soooo hard to just get your prescription, especially if you don't live/work/travel to Central Square. The only options presented to me were in-person pickup, fax, or text message (???). No email or physical mail option. What percent of Boston-area people have a personal fax number? If I knew that physical proximity were so important, I would have picked someone closer (or someone who uses email). Apparently only the optometrist can send records (not the person who handles the phone) so I have to wait for her to be in the office to do anything with my records. And she isn't in the office every day so I can't get a fax via a fax-to-email service since most free fax numbers expire in ~24 hours unless I call back when she is available which I've been told is Saturdays. But I've also called on Saturdays and been told that they were too busy to handle records stuff and to please call back on Monday. read more

I came to Kevork with two pairs of vintage eyeglass frames that needed lenses. A lot of eye places won't even touch that situation (afraid the frames will break? not enough $$?) but he said, "Oh sure!" Moreover he did a STELLAR job. I am nearly blind and we even discussed how there was little point getting thin lenses for plastic frames - they don't stick out that much. I went back a thousand times for small adjustments, and Kevork never got irritated and even seemed to welcome the opportunity. He really enjoys his work and taking care of customers. I am the princess and the pea when it comes to glasses - they're on my face, after all - so I really value this attention. I'm heading back for sunglasses and already scoped out some sweet frames. Prices range from about $100 to...a lot...and they are all stylish. Highly recommended! read more

I am a HUGE fan of Custom Eyes, because when it comes to something as important as your eyes, you NEED a good doctor. You NEED good customer service, people you can trust. Kathleen and Kevork run this place, and they rock! I am really impressed with how they explain to you everything you need to know (Kathleen the optometrist is so nice and very professional) and care about ALL the little details (Kevork cleans and adjusts your glasses to fit you perfectly-- the care he gives you is as if you are one of his precious children--which he posts pictures of on the wall-- or at least that's how I felt!). Kevork also encourages you to come in for free adjustments if you ever need them-- which if you've had glasses before, you will at regular intervals, because it gets looser-- or something happens to your glasses, like a ball hits you, and they get whacked out of shape. Kathleen and Kevork: these are 2 people I want to have over for dinner; they are sooo nice (and very very professional at the same time). I really enjoyed the entire process of getting an eye exam, contacts, AND glasses all at once. I could do it once a week easily if I had to, it was that much fun and that relaxing/non-stressful. They have a beautiful and unique selection of frames too, don't be fooled by the size of the shop. There's a lot to choose from, and the frames they offer are the good ones. it was kind of a challenge to choose because I liked so many of their frames which I have not seen in other places. in the end I got a really stunning pair of sophisticated purple frames that everyone compliments me on. I am so happy with them-- I actually feel confident and attractive (in a sort of smart, yuppie way) when I wear these glasses. I used to *hate* wearing my glasses, but now I cannot get enough of them! Contacts were also great, and everything was done very quickly and smoothly. very pleased with Dr. Murphy and custom eyes! The annual eye exam is always something that I dread, just because it's expensive (I don't have vision coverage, yay student insurance!), annoying, and seems like it's for no good reason. Oh really, my prescription hasn't changed at all and I came all the way in here for nothing because MA law says that I need a new contacts prescription each year, thanks! Anyway - Dr. Murphy makes these visits much more bearable. She does a really thorough exam and actually makes me feel like the visit is worthwhile. I have terrible vision and a family history of some eye problems, and I always leave feeling like the visit was actually something important for my health vs just a pain in the ass. Also they are super nice about letting you try different contacts before committing to buying a whole box, and I've compared prices with other places (1800contacts, etc) and they are all about the same. I assume if you use yelp you can use google maps, but the location is great. 2 mins from the T, and there is tons of metered parking in Central. It is also 2 doors down from the field, so if you get there early you can pop in for a quick drink. because drinking before the doctor, why not. read more

Kathleen was very helpful but she did not give my PD measurement on my prescription which is required in Massachusetts. (Yeah PD is the key if you want to save $$$ by purchasing glasses online) I tried to call and ask for my PD measurement but the guy who picked up the phone refused to give me a measurement once he heard that I am not going to purchase glasses in the store. I would not recommend this store to my friend for eye exam. read more

In short, I wholeheartedly recommend Custom Eyes. For the past year I'd lived with contact lenses that, despite my former optometrist's blatant disregard to my concerns, only contributed by my already dry eyes -- in general, by 3 PM of any given work day I'd struggle with the 'Gosh-I-can't-wait-to-get-home-to-RIP-THESE-LENSES-OFF-MY-FACE' desire. Dr. Murphy attentively listened to my concerns. She evaluated the eye dryness, and made lens recommendations based on availability, price, and suitability. While the first prescription wasn't quite right, she was happy to adjust the strength to match that of my former script. She was quite welcoming, and never did I feel intimidated while in the chair. Price was excellent -- with my insurance, the contact lens exam came to $50 plus a $10 copay, for a grand total of $60. I was not charged any additional visit fees for the follow-up. Parking in this area can be a little tricky during the week, but there's always the Central red line stop all of a half block away. The waiting room is a little small with three chairs lined side by side by side, so there isn't much room. My wait was short, however. Conclusion: Excellent! Definitely going back for for yearly exams! read more

In hindsight, I should of given Doctor Murphy five stars. I have been a patient of hers since I moved into the Boston area and have been extremely pleased with her personal and professional manner. I travel into Cambridge from Acton which isn't always an easy feat to accomplish. However, I can't recall a health care professional whose opinion I trust as much as hers. Her pleasant and authentic manner don't hurt either I also want to amend the comments I made about Kevork (the optician and owner of Custom Eye). While waiting to complete a part of the eye exam that I didn't have time to do back in September, he asked about my previous review (John / Acton--- pretty easy to make the connection). He told me that he did not mean to insult me about my eye wear, but was just making a statement of fact. I told him that he was correct that the frame were not of the best quality, but that I wouldn't have used the word "cheap" as there are less charged ways to say the same thing. I understand it's very hard to always be mindful of your language or how someone might interpret what or how you say something. So, since he meant no smarm / harm I have no complaint anymore and was incorrect in my assessment of his motives. I am very appreciative of Kevork's candor and willingness to speak to a disgruntled customer. More small business owner's need to be willing to talk to their customers who are willing to speak up about something they don't like. We all benefit! Speaking of which, during our conversation, I learned more about the lenses and frames and prices they currently offer. I will certainly consider next time getting my frames and lenses from Custom Eyes. Three stars to them! read more

I just bought a pair of TC Charton eyeglasses online and had my prism lenses from another pair of eyeglasses...but no amount of sweetalking would make those lenses get into the new eyeglasses. But I knew they were supposed to fit since their original home was in the exact same model of TC Charton. I'm guessing that each pair of eyeglasses varies in size, despite being the same model...but I digress. Basically, Kevork was super sweet and used his handy dandy machine and got them in for me. Free of charge - I offered to pay, but he wasn't having it. I haven't decided if I will come back here for my eye exams yet (I have super high maintenance eyes that require specialists), but I am quite impressed by the kindness and customer service! read more

Just had an eye exam today with Dr. Murphy. First of all, this place is great because their contact lens fitting fee is only $70. Other optometrists I was looking at charge upwards of $120! Secondly, Dr. Murphy is super nice and personable. She was very thorough in her exam. When I arrived, they found out that they actually didn't accept my insurance, even though over the phone they said they did. Because I had already come for my appointment, Dr. Murphy was super accommodating and agreed to perform my exam and contact lens fitting for only $80. I was already planning to pay $70 for the contact lens fitting, so I was very pleased with that. I am also a hilariously squeamish person and was starting to feel faint after I saw the pictures of the insides of my eyes and started feeling faint. Dr. Murphy and the staff were so kind and patient and really took care of me until I felt better. These guys are the best! Family run business and everyone is so friendly and patient. Large selection of frames and open pretty late. They're always ready to adjust/tweak anything that's bothering you and make sure you leave happy and satisfied. They somehow remember all their customers (even over the phone!) and treat everyone like a family friend. read more
