This is a small business in Noe Valley. My wife has been going here for years and I started going about four years ago, when I started to need reading glasses. It's disappointing to go from better than 20/20 vision to not being able to read a small print menu in a dimly lit place. But, such is life. Dr. Ng is great. She's very kind and patient with all of my questions. Each year my prescription has been getting worse and she always makes the perfect adjustments. She explains everything very clearly and I would highly recommend her to anyone who uses or needs to start using glasses. Don't fear being preyed on for weird overcharges. Quick and easy appointment with the optometrist Dr. Ng (pronounced ING) at this humble little OD office. I am eternally grateful to her and her lovely assistant enough for squeezing me in for a regular eye exam needed to complete the DMV vision form, as I was in quite a predicament that was very time sensitive. Dr. Ng's assistant was very friendly and reassuring while scheduling my appointment and during my check in at the office. Dr. Ng is more reserved and succinct in speech during the duration of the examination, but she was quite friendly afterwards. I cannot thank her enough for completing the exam without any fuss or excessive questioning as some ODs tend to with my more unique eye condition. She also was very efficient in planning my exam so that she was able to fill out my DMV vision form while I was dilating so that no time was wasted. I would definitely come back to Dr. Ng should my regular optometrist be unavailable and would definitely recommend her to friends in the area! Three visits later I would say choose a different optometrist. Dr Bonnie means well but she's not in tuned with her patient & can make an alarming diagnosis without fully briefing the patient (she asked me to look up my diagnosis) or can go on a tangent about something unrelated. She herself, even prior to mask wearing is hard to read. Mask on, her tone can seem emotionless. I don't sense she has a superior knowledge of optometry that would warrant sucking up her poor bedside manner. read more

I absolutely LOVE Dr. Ng and have been her patient since 2016. My only regret is not seeing her as my regular optometrist sooner! As someone who has had bad eye sight (nearsightedness) since childhood, I can honestly say that Dr. Ng is the best optometrist who I have visited. She is friendly, warm, extremely knowledgeable, and competent. She takes her time with your eye examination and understanding your needs. You can immediately tell that she truly cares about you as her patient and the health of your eyes. Seeing her was also the first time where I have felt that I received the correct prescription for my contact lenses and confident in having near perfect vision when wearing them. She also always gives me advice, tips, and best practices for how to address my dry eyes and the fact that I (unfortunately) spend a lot of time staring at the screen. In Fall 2017, I ordered eyeglasses through Dr. Ng's office. She has many options for all face types and style senses, and will let you know her thoughts on what looks best if you're interested. The ones I selected (brown tortoise colored Kate Spade frames) were affordable (and 100% or mostly covered by my vision insurance through work) and are very stylish and sturdy. I happily wear them in place of my contacts, especially at night. Additionally, I have never had issues with making an appointment (weekend availability a plus) or contacting the office for any ad-hoc requests. Dr. Ng and Jasmine provide high quality patient care. I went in for my first eye exam, and they made me feel very comfortable. Dr. Ng talked me through each step of the appointment. Dr. Ng was knowledgeable and answered every question I had about my eye health. I felt Dr. Ng took the time to listen to my concerns and I never felt dismissed. After her exam, she gave me the appropriate prescription. When it came to picking out frames, Jasmine was very patient with me and provided honest feedback. Dr. Ng's indifferent tone and attitude made me feel uncomfortable. This was my first time seeing her, and she acted really annoyed when she asked me questions about my vision. I also felt like she was being condenscending and treated me younger than a working professional. The clinic felt slightly dated and didn't have a bathroom for patients to use. The tipping point for me was at the end, Dr. Ng wouldn't give me my new contact lens prescription because she wanted me to test it out for a week. I mentioned that has never happened to me in the last decade that I've been wearing contacts, and her response was: "I'm a great doctor and if you don't like my practice you can go somewhere else next year." I was shocked by her response. I don't care how great of a doctor you are if you can treat your patients with kindness and respect. read more

Dr. Ng is fantastic. Believe the hype! It'd been a good half a decade or more since the the last time I had an eye exam. My eyes are generally OK, but the occasionally bouts of eye strain convinced me to make my 2008 resolution getting an eye exam. I picked Eye Level from my insurance's website, and I feel that I luckily made a fantastic choice. Dr. Ng spent a good amount of time in the exam, and dealt wonderfully with the fact that I hate things going in my eye - like drops and glaucoma testing devices. In the end, I was convinced that it was finally time to get computer glasses for my astigmatism, to avoid the aforementioned eye strain. She also spent the time to help me pick out good frames, and I think her advice was dead on towards picking frames that look good and look good on me. I have really bad eyes. I've been wearing glasses since I was 6 and contacts since age 12... so I've seen my fair share of optometrists. Dr. Bonnie Ng was the best optometrist yet. What makes her the best? Lemme break it down for you: 1.) On the few occasions that I've gone into her office I'm usually the only patient there, or there is one other person. She never over-books and you never have to wait to see her. 2.) She takes her time and runs several tests during the exam. I appreciate that. She also asks lots of questions and actually listens to what you are saying. When I say "this is still kind of blurry" she doesn't say... "oh, we don't want to put you in a stronger prescription" like my past optometrists... instead she says "ok, we'll go stronger, but if it's too strong let me know." Thanks Dr. Ng! 3.) She doesn't have a lot of employees. It is just her and an older woman who I believe is her mom. They're incredibly personable and are super friendly. When I walk into Eye Level Optometry I feel like I live in a small town where everyone knows you and greets you with a smile. I like that. I highly recommend Dr. Ng! read more

She adds humor to the experience by interjecting her flare into conversations and making you smile. Love Dr. Ng! As many of you will notice, I am a sucker for proximity, and Dr. Ng being on my corner is one big reason why I like going to her. However, if she were one of the aforementioned "crackpot" OD's I wouldn't bother going back. No crackpot, this one. She's really thorough, is a whiz with my insurance, makes sure to cover all the cost bases in advance and I am pretty sure it's her family covering the front of house when she is in back. Everyone is extremely pleasant and she even has Saturday hours, bless her heart! A welcome addition to the neighborhood and yet another example of a local business I will happily support. read more

I'm a law student, which unfortunately means I have to read way more than any normal person would ever want to, and that I spend way too long in front of my computer. I had bad vision already coming into school, and though it was stable for much of my first two years, last year it started to slip again. So when I noticed this new storefront on Church Street, I thought I would come here when my VSP insurance reset for 2006. So it turns out that my *last* O.D. was a total crackpot, because I received a very thorough and informative exam from Dr. Ng. And she is personable and friendly, and didn't use that awful machine that shoots puffs of air into your eyes to check for glaucoma -- apparently, technology has improved! She has a selection of frames that seemed pretty stylish, though I wasn't looking too closely since I love the frames I've got already. So glad that there's actually a useful service in my neighborhood! read more

I'm no law student, but I do spend most of my workday staring into the depths of a monitor. When I do that, I like to *see* the things I'm looking at. Unfortunately, my eyes aren't so with the program on that last part. They think it's fun to send my brain stabby eye pain signals. So I have glasses, glasses with next to no prescription, to help me see what's on my monitor without the added stabbing and blinding headaches. Except, well, I lost those glasses and needed a new pair. Since my company switched eye insurance providers, my old OD was out. I was never so crazy about them anyway, with their pusherman ways when it came to buying glasses from the dispensary attached to their practice. But my new insurance company endorses places attached to stores where you can buy a washer while you wait. That, quite simply, would not do. But wait! One independent provider on the list within walking distance of my house. How bad could it be? Not bad at all, it turns out. Dr. Ng is indeed friendly and personable. I got out of having my eyes dilated this time, but she made a point of suggesting a later appointment time for next year, when I won't be able to weasel out of my least favorite part of having eyes. She's got a decent selection of frames and took the time to go over no less than a half dozen of them with me until I found my favorite. Plus, you know, walking distance! And open on Saturdays! Two thumbs way, way up. read more

Dr. Ng was the best optometrist I have ever visited and I've worn glasses for a long time. I am an accountant who spends too much of my day staring at Excel and a tiny 8 point font so I definitely know the meaning of some good old-fashioned eye strain. She took my EyeMed insurance for the exam, no problem, and she didn't even call me out for being a big baby about the eye drops (which I was). She did explain what she was doing every step of the way in a clear and concise manner, which I appreciated. Dr. Ng also has a relatively small collection of frames for purchase, but is very knowledgeable about her inventory. She carries some simple and classic shapes. Nothing too outlandish or extravagant here. All in all, if you live anywhere near the J Church you'd have to be blind to miss the opportunity to get your eyes checked here. read more

Everyone's said it already, but I just wanted to throw my shout-out. With nearly 20 years of glasses-wearing, this is the best experience I have ever had with an optometrist. Dr. Ng is patient, friendly, thorough with explanations and answering any questions. She's never overbooked,so I've never had to wait longer than a couple of minutes for my appointment. I am extremely sad to say that I will not be able to continue seeing Dr. Ng as my optometrist, after being her patient for over 4 years (my insurance is changing and my new insurance will not cover her). I don't think I've ever had such a great experience with a professional....though I wish she would feel comfortable enough to call me by my first name. :-) Bottom line, I can not recommend Dr. Ng and Eye Level Optometry more highly. She helped me with an efficient manner and the price is actually pretty decent with an eye check so i am completely satisfied! The location is a quiet neighborhood in the Noe Valley area. I also appreciate how when I show up to my appointment on time, I don't have to wait forever like some other doctor's offices. She's very honest, helpful, and patient. Made an appointment to see Dr. Bonnie Ng on Saturday morning - that's right, SATURDAY. All my insurance info was taken care of before I arrived, and Dr. Bonnie was excellent! All my questions were answered, and I even learned a few new eye facts that came in handy. I was even given the low-down on the mysterious laser surgery pros and cons, and Dr. Bonnie will consult and follow up every step of the way if I decide to go to the laser surgeon. Bonnie is awesome - always a pleasure to visit and be seen by her. After a while being a customer, I stupidly purchased some glasses from Lenscrafters and the lens coating started peeling. They wouldn't repair them even though they were only a few months old - it was a huge mistake not ordering through Bonnie. I unfortunately had a really bad experience here, both for my eye exam and follow up needs. The doctor was knowledgeable, which was the positive part of the experience. I also feel she had my best interest at heart. Here were the things that didn't go well: -I didn't end up liking the new brand of contact lenses she recommended and when I tried to switch back to old kind, I was told I had to come in a pay for a whole new eye exam by the receptionist (which would also entail paying out of pocket). After I asked to speak directly to the doctor, this ended up not being the case. -The optometrist didn't check my pupilllary distance during my eval, even though I wear contacts and glasses. The receptionist told me that this was because I didn't buy glasses from them. But she assured me I could come in "anytime" to get my pupillary distance checked. When I came in to pick up my new contact lenses, I was told I would have to wait an hour to get it checked and I should have called ahead. -The receptionist was non-empathetic and condescending when I was saying it would have been helpful to have known I should call ahead. I would have happily done so had she let me know. Her responses were curt and unapologetic. She then said I was more than welcome to find a different optometrist. Well, thanks for the suggestion! That's exactly what I'll be doing. read more

I stopped in Eye Level to try on new frames and fill a prescription from a different eye doctor. Dr. Ng was very friendly and extremely helpful in choosing new glasses for my thick lenses. She was also very patient with me as I was indecisive and tried on numerous frames for the better part of an hour. After I got the glasses I stopped in two more times for minor adjustments since the glasses were not fitting me perfectly. There was never any waiting, and Dr. Ng remembered exactly who I was each time. I was very thankful for the additional time she spent to make sure my glasses were comfortable. I'm definitely going to make sure to get my next full eye exam with her, since just getting glasses was such a pleasure. Her hours are great as well. Highly recommended! read more

I had an appointment for a regular Eye check-up because I ran out of contacts. I got there promptly at 9am and Dr. Ng and her assistant was friendly and accommodating. I felt super comfortable and really thought Dr. Ng was easy to talk to. I gave her some information about my family history and brought in my glasses for her to take a look at. She was thorough with the eye exam and very professional. Anyways, since this is my first time here. I'm giving this place a solid 4/5 stars. Dr Ng is very thorough and attentive. She answered all my questions in detail. The prescription she gave me for my glasses was spot on. I now have progressive lens glasses that actually work for me. A prior optometrist didn't get them right and I ended up not wearing them and suffering with cheap reading glasses so I could actually read. I'm so happy to now have the right prescription! Dr Ng does have a somewhat serious manner. She isn't especially affable or jolly, but she is certainly nice and cares about her patients. If you want a soft and mushy optometrist, she isn't the one. But if you want a well respected, top notch optometrist who will perform a thorough exam and give you the correct prescription, she is the one. read more

I really like Dr. Ng; she's extremely knowledgeable and is able to explain things simply to people that (obviously) don't have medical degrees. She's incredibly down to earth and easy to talk with; I love the banter we have back and forth. She's also extremely honest, and she really does have your best interest at heart. She's not going to try to sell you something you don't need, etc. This is such a breath of fresh air and makes me happy to support local small businesses. She ended up recommending the larger contact size which has worked wonders for my contact related dryness. I purchased my glasses through her, and all the frames were quite affordable.
