I hadn't seen an eye doctor in over a decade, and my entire appointment was under an hour. Dr. Cohen himself was super knowledgeable and explained everything in a friendly way as he went along. Super thorough, yet fast. Dr. Cohen also teaches, and is up-to-date on all equipment and techniques. Also no up-selling - he'll suggest what you need, and it's up to you. In fact, he saved me tons of money, explaining why I didn't need a Lasik touch-up. I left with a thorough understanding about what was going on with my eyes (nothing serious) - and an affordable and simple solution to deal with it. I am a patient of Dr. Barry Cohen for over 25 years. I had been to various optometrists, opthalmologists, and a neurologist for my vision problem. None of them could diagnose my problem correctly for five years! Several of my friends referred me to Dr. Cohen over 25 years ago. I received the eye exams and he told me the problem and said that he could correct it. He explained the problem in detail. My vision problem is complicated and only Dr. Barry Cohen was able to correct it. Dr. Cohen changed my life! I received the corrective glasses and my prescription glasses for both reading and distance have been perfect each year. I was able to continue to pursue my career in education for over 25 years because of his care! He also prescribed prescription glasses for surfing which brought me so much joy! I owe so much of my quality of life to him! My recent prescription for surfing as usual is perfect. Dr. Cohen is a skilled diagnostician and he really cares for his patients. His mission in life is to ensure his patients are diagnosed correctly and maintain the best vision possible. I have referred many friends, family members, and children who need vision care whom I referred due to my educational connections. He corrected students' vision problems who were several grade levels behind or could barely read because they needed vision correction. Dr. Cohen is a superb eye doctor and a pleasure to deal with. I'm very fortunate to have found him when I moved to Santa Monica. In addition to the excellent care he's provided me, he also sells nothing but high quality frames. I bought my current frames from him about 10 years ago and they're still like new. All of the frames I've purchased from prior establishments fall apart within 4-5 years and were all overpriced lower quality titanium frames. Saw Dr. Cohen for an eye exam and found the whole experience disorganized, frustrating and ultimately a complete waste of time. First off, he talked super fast - mostly about himself. I had to insist he check my old prescription to see if it had changed - which he did grudgingly but never gave me an answer so now I don't even know if I need new glasses. Since he mostly talked about himself, I was unable to ask my very important questions. When I called (repeatedly) about trying to setup a quick phone call, I was told he wouldn't even speak with me unless I paid an extra $50.00. He may be a very knowledgable, helpful doctor. I'll never know because I mostly came away with frustration and more questions. Also, the front desk women don't even pretend they'd like to be helpful. read more

I have been wearing prescription glasses since I was 2 years old and over the years have seen numerous Opthalmologists in many cities. In addition to seeing Opthalmologists in LA, I also have seen Dr. Cohen over the last 30 years to make my glasses, which until recent surgery have been very involved with some of the worst astigmatism most of my Dr's have seen. When I'd go to Dr. Cohen to make my glasses he always, on his own, would take a second look at my eyes to confirm the prescription, and at times even modified the Opthalmologist''s prescription where I could recognize the positive difference even during the exam. He has the most up to date equipment and thoroughly explains what is going on with your eyes. He also has helped my wife with her prescriptions and addressing various concerns. We wouldn't hesitate for a second to recommend Dr. Cohen! read more

Dr. Cohen is the best! I saw him today, after doing a FaceTime call. My Eyes looked so bad he insisted that I come in within the half hour. I was in so much pain, but within 10 minutes of seeing him the pain was much better. Dr. Cohen does what he does because he loves it it's not a job to him. And I love to see him because I always feel welcome and he always takes the best care of me. I have extremely dry eyes, which are quite problematic for me but he always fixes me up. Dr. Cohen is as friendly and knowledgeable as they come. My daughters and I both had appointments. We were greeted with smile and friendly voice by his staff. Normally children are scared and uncomfortable but, he made us feel comfortable, I was very impressed with him as explaining everything in depth along with visuals to support what was being told to us and my daughters were learning like being in school. My visit felt more like us were visiting family rather than an eye appointment. Dr. Cohen, this star rating is not for you--in fact, you are absolutely fantastic! There is no doubt that I would recommend you to anyone. You provided a comprehensive eye exam and you are an absolute delight. I left the exam with full intention to make a purchase for my new prescription. However, let me explain the 1 star. The older of the two women sitting at the front desk put a very bad taste in my mouth. I had my insurance information printed and willing to listen to my options. I asked about the option to keep my current frames and upgrade my lenses--I said "Looks like my insurance covers a single vision lens and scratch coating. She immediately snapped back at me and said "That's for a STANDARD lens--and NO it doesn't include scratch coating". So I asked about A/R coating. The young lady helping me passed her my insurance info print out and she went on to quote me, dryly, "$80 for A/R coating"....my insurance states $40. This went back and forth for a few minutes...just enough for me to decide I was not going to make a purchase from someone who was so rude and unwilling to help. Secondly, I asked to have my previous frames looked at to let me know what the RX read on each--when I asked for the reads to use as a reference to the previous eye doctor (who Dr. Cohen mentioned over corrected me)--she said I was not allowed to have them and that every machine reads differently---Well, that's comforting? Am I actually overcorrected or is your machine reading differently? I left pretty disappointed that I was treated that way on my very first visit to your practice AND after having such a wonderful exam with you. I dont know who that employee is or her relation to you but she is bad for business. I would quickly reconsider and let me know if you do--I'll be back to support your practice. read more

Please don't go here. Some of my coworkers have gone to see Barry and have had positive experiences. However, I did not. After my eye exam I told Dr. Cohen that I really wanted contacts. He discouraged me from exploring that option and then proceeded to put contacts in my eyes without letting me know what he was doing. He violated my eyes! Came in here today to fix my sons glasses. I almost didn't come in because the place looked closed. Glad I did though! The lady helping me was very nice, fixed the glasses ( they just needed a screw) and tadaaaa problem solved. I was charged $5 for the screw, which I found fair enough, considering that I have already tried doing t myself with those $1.99 kits from von... obviously, unsuccessfully. The shop was neat, clean and well organized. While waiting I did see they have no children's glasses. They did have a nice selection of adult glasses, and when I need a new pair I will most definitely come in again. Thanks! read more

I actually used to be a patient of Dr Cohen, but because of the crazy office manager (she is Russian I believe) I will never go there again. I was shocked to read such poor reviews of Dr Cohen. He is the best eye doctor I have ever been to. My current doctor gets great reviews and I refuse to return to his office because I fear he has ruined my eyes and charged a fortune to do so. Dr Cohen has a gift of gab but I think he takes the time to know your eyes and put you at ease. I may return to him even if the drive sucks...... That being said I left him partly because the staff that others have spoken of in previous reviews. You should always take advantage of your health benefits when you have it. So I went to Eye Concepts for an eye examination. I've been to several eye exams in my lifetime. One of the instruments is out in the open, so there was glare on the screen and I had to put my hand up to block the glare...but that wasn't a big deal. I'm always afraid of the eye puff instrument, and this is the first time it went well with one shot! Dr. Cohen was great. I get really freaked out when objects (or someone's fingers) come close to my eyes, but he let me know everything he was doing and it was gentle. He explained a lot of things to me and it was easy to understand. It was a quick exam and he didn't pressure me to buy anything from his office and he recommended over-the counter products over prescription eye care products. It was a relatively quick exam. The staff was nice, too. read more

I wrote a review in 2013 and not much has changed. I'm still experiencing the highest level of care from Eye Concepts. Your eye doctor is an important part of your health care. I can't stand wearing glasses except at home so I'm required to get annual check ups. I look forward to my visits because I know I will get the best care possible. I have always had dry eyes and Dr Cohen constantly recommends new products to assist me with staying hydrated. I have the perfect contacts for my condition as well as supplemental products. My allergies have also given me trouble for as long as I can recall. I often had red eyes which is not an attractive feature. Dr Cohen helped me find products to keep my eyes clear, white and irritant free. I get amazing care but most importantly it's the warmth I feel during my visits. You genuinely feel a since of community and concern for your eye health. Dr Cohen won't recommend anything you don't need and will discuss alternatives if your needs are financially constraining. I'm so grateful he is a part of my healthcare management. If you want a great doctor who has passion for what he does even after all these years...he's your guy! He is not simply about making money. You will see (pun intended) that he consistently reinvests in his business to offer the most modern equipment for testing. And if you have questions about your coverage or anything administratively related his staff will take care of you. The office is beautifully maintained with more frame styles than you can imagine. My daughter and I both had appointments. I made a mistake of going to Lens Crafter (to save a little money), not only did I not get the correct lenses for my glasses, the lenses on the glasses were a little loose and the exam was just so-so, there were 3-4 people administering the exam. I've been coming here for more than 5 years, and Dr Cohen is not only thorough with his exam, he really takes his time and I've always gotten the glasses and lenses correctly. I can also understand why some of the reviewers complained about the "Russian" office manager, she's definitely not the friendliest. I haven't had any problems with her though. read more

Dr. Barry Cohen has been our family's eye doctor for about 3 decades - yes, I said DECADES! - I have known him since I was a small child and I can honestly say he is genuinely the sweetest guy and we've always thought he was an excellent doctor. His office manager, as a few others have posted about, is not, however, an easy person to deal with. She is rude, verbally aggressive/combative, and it became evident (the internet is very helpful with such matters) that she is grossly overcharging for frames/contacts/whatever she is selling out if this office, in addition to refusing to give a written breakdown of costs. Is there an ethical business anywhere that won't provide its customers with a receipt?! I am a business owner and have to wonder what that's really about...or do I... :(( Although I decided not to continue visiting this office my elderly mother did. After so many, many years of seeing Dr. Cohen, she just adored him and believed, regardless of the combative woman at the front desk, that she was getting excellent care by the doctor. She would not see someone else. Well, her experience with the office manager was finally so entirely unpleasant/offensive/bizarre that I was able to convince her to go elsewhere. She found a fantastic eye doctor just a little farther east on Wilshire who is equally kind and whose office is run by the nicest and truly helpful staff. I'm so happy for my little old mama and also relieved to no longer hear about her concerns and frustrations with a woman who is clearly NUTS. It was really shaking her up every time and she had frequent visits to pick up regular glasses, prescription sunglasses, contacts, etc...all of which I must add, she was being unfairly overcharged for! Here's the thing, I would never have gone so far as to write a bad review of Dr. Cohen's business - even with a woman running his office who clearly has slippery ethics and a vicious mouth - because we've adored him for so long HOWEVER my aging mother whose vision was just beginning to fail (even with her prescription) especially at night and with long distances and believed it was just simply age turns out just simply to have had the wrong prescription. For years. This might not seem like a big deal, but when it means your life is changing and getting more restrictive because you are afraid to drive at night, etc...it's a REALLY BIG DEAL! Her vision is just fine now. At night and with long distances. Wow. Very sad. Go somewhere else. I was not too happy with my results. I had a good experience visiting the doctor. He evaluated my needs and I received my glasses on time. However after couple of months I noticed that I can NOT use these glasses because I was getting blurry vision. I went back to the doctor explain it to him but he did not want to hear me. While the Doctor himself was pleasant (although rather pushy with his up-selling), the lady in charge of the administrative side of things was horrible. She was rude, pushy, and drastically overcharged me by not including my insurance mandated discount (it wasn't until I later spoke with my insurance company that I realized this). Although I wrote an excellent review last year, I need to revise my review. As it turns out my mother has had a hard time with her glasses she got last year from Dr. Cohen's office. The lenses always seemed "smudged" and no matter how she tried to clean them, they were always smudgy and unclear. She recently discovered that the quality of the lenses in her glasses was extremely poor and that they were never going to be clear. She has since replaced her lenses from a different optometrist and they are crystal clear. I feel strongly that Dr. Cohen's office took advantage of an 88 year old woman and sold her poor quality lenses for her new frames, frames which she got at the same time at Dr. Cohen's office. Although she felt she was having a good experience at Dr. Cohen's office, the quality of his product was horrible. We would not recommend his office to anyone. read more

In writing this review I hope to: A) provide fair warning to new potential patients B) provide some suggestions for improvement to the business owner. With any review of a medial service my feedback is related to both the Office Staff as well as the Doctor. My experience with the Office Staff was unlike anything I have experienced in a professional environment. I had a few needs that required having to contact the front office, make a few additional visits to the office to pick up products and requesting additional billing details necessary to fulfill my medial claim. The woman who informed me she was the 'manager' of the front office was incredibly rude and treated me as though I had something terribly wrong when I requested simple information. She was passive aggressive and condescending in her tone towards me - the opposite set of professional skills this position should possess. In reading the previous reviews, I am clearly not the first person to call out this specific individual and I truly hope that the business owner listens to voice of their customers and their complaints so that they can make the necessary changes to course-correct. My experience with Dr. Cohen was pleasant and easy. It was what I have come to expect for typical eye exams and contact prescription assessments. The reason I have weighed this portion of my experience with Eye Concepts is because he issued a weaker prescription than what I have had in the past. I trusted his advice and unfortunately am having difficulty with my long distance and night vision, and therefore need to get a new exam to get the corrected prescription. In all my experiences dealing with eye doctors, this has been the worst. I believe in our society we vote everyday in how we choose to spend our money, and I suggest not 'voting' for this business in its current condition and the makeup of their office personnel. read more

Dr. Cohen took the time to give a thorough examination and discuss alternatives. He determined that my eyes were irritated, which was affecting my vision, due to seborrheic dermatitis. Rather than suggesting a change in my prescription, he suggested an eyelid/lash cleaning solution that has caused my problems to disappear. read more
