We just completed our kitchen remodel and could not be happier. We'd been thinking about a kitchen remodel for some time. Our kitchen was small and inefficient. Very hard space to share while cooking / cleaning. This was exactly what we needed to get off the dime and get it done. Dean, Janeth, Arnold and the team were all great to work with. BOTTOM LINE: everything done early (7 weeks) and on budget. Who gets to say that about a kitchen remodel?? WHAT WE HAD DONE: Full kitchen remodel. Floors replaced throughout the kitchen, living room, hall. Ceilings replaced, new lighting and painting throughout the same. BUDGET: Less than $100K for everything, 20-30% below quotes I got just to do the kitchen. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: We have a cookie cutter Ponderosa house. Expressions offered a cookie cutter approach. This was great choice for us. Go to showroom. Pick cabinets, pick flooring, pick tile, countertop all in one shot. Limited number of choices but plenty of options. This made the process so easy, but it has trade offs. We did not pay for high end counter tops and there are visible seams. The undercounter finishes are a little rough. The cabinets are good quality, have some very nice features, but they aren't custom high end. Fortunately, the kitchen being removed was totally standard. Janeth helped create an extremely efficient layout. We love working in and hanging out in the space. THE PROCESS: They communicated throughout. Kept us appraised what was happening every step of the way, especially once the work started on site. Dean had worked with our exact kitchen before and made great recommendations. We didn't think an Island could at all be a possibility, but we ended up with not only an island, but a sizable 4'x8' one where multiple people can prep and work and talk. Janeth made recommendations based on what has worked for other people and what she had ended up using in her own kitchen. The recommendations are proving to be spot on. On-site team led by Arnold. I really, really appreciated that the on-site team was asking questions. One looked at where we had set the pull-out garbage, and asked me to look at maybe using a different cupboard than I planned. He was right. Moving it made the whole workspace flow much more. Painting team worked miracles in our hallways and repairing 20 years of kid damage. Arnold made suggestions and when a choice I made didn't seem great, he was subtle in his suggestions and gave guidance. Eg one morning I walked out and saw the tiles were laid out with the grout I'd chosen and several other choices. My choice looked terrible and it was a quick text exchange on which we were quickly in synch. Same for cabinet and drawer pulls. Everything at their recommended site was sold out, so I showed him what I was thinking. He brought a handful of samples, all in the right spirit, plus some variants for me to consider. Easy peasy. The finished quality is good and every time we walk through, Arnold has been inspecting things and encourages me to point out the tiniest details. Having done enough projects at work, I have been pleased that he notices things that I didn't catch. We are having a small issue with the undercounter LEDs, but they promise a three month follow-up and we'll be able to address at that time. ---- Wrote review three months ago and still very happy with our choice. Know you are not buying ultra high end, but get a great seamless process. Absolutely the right choice for us. If we hadn't found this team, I'd probably still be agonizing over where to start. Thanks to the team we have a wonderful kitchen done in record time. RESULTS No one can believe it's the same house! I can't believe it's done on time and at the promised price. Did not get to work with Expressions General Remodel Inc. but let me tell you about my phone interaction with a real peach named Wendy.  We made an appointment about 10 days or so ago to get a quote for our primary bedroom, bathroom and closet.  Wendy called the day before and seemed to be in real rush. She dictated that following day's appointment is canceled. It was only after I asked twice, is when she shared why, it seemed like a drag to communicate the reason. She proceeded to start booking alternative days until I reminded her that my wife and I are both working professionals with small children and that weekends are our only available time together. This fact was clearly articulated by me during the initiall call to book the onsite appointment. Ironically, the initial employee who booked the call insisted that my wife and I should be home together. As I attempted to check our busy calendar (and narrating my steps), Wendy began repeating and mocking me about being busy; "so are eveyone else sir, so are everyone else...") and then hung up without getting a response from me! Wendy, you are the front face of the death of modern customer service/business etiquette! Expressions came recommended by a friend who remodeled his and parents kitchens many years ago. Price I like the original flow and save a lot by not having to redo the flooring. Less than $70k. Also added 2 side cabinets for non-kitchen related storage. How they work The 3-person team of Dean, Janeth and Arnold work seamlessly together. They clearly know their craft and understand the need of regular homeowners. Their division of duty is very effective. Dean does not try to upsell you anything; if you aren't a quick decision maker, he can come across as rather intimidating. Just tell him to slow down and let you think. Arnold is project manager and you will be spending the most time with him during and after the project completes. Janeth is designer and the person who deals with permits. She does the magic behind the scenes . If you have ever dealt with permits, you know its all about relationship and knowing what wasn't written clearly. We got out permits without delay. To update: After I wrote the initial review I heard from Miles immediately, however it still took until the end of November to complete the project. In addition, the team at Expressions acted rudely after I wrote the review. Miles did attempt to make up for some of the issues like taking money off for the rose bush and oleander bush the crew killed by moving them (even though we were told they would live and when it was clear they wouldn't, that they'd replace them), he did replace our screen and hoses that were damaged during the work, and took some money off for the several broken light bulbs. Lastly, we discovered due to our furnace breaking that when Expressions relocated some duct work they violated code and didn't pull the appropriate permits or do the correct tests. According to three separate heating and a/c professionals, this is what caused it to break. read more

Hi all, Just thought getting a few min to rate Expressions, we hired them to do a kitchen remodel. We planned our kitchen remodel in couple of months, set up a budget and started calling contractors. First of all, we started searching contractors near by, we thought they would be affordable and close by. After reviewing each option we interviewed a couple, we decided to give Expressions a chance. Miles came to our home, on a Tuesday evening. Miles was professional, puntual & knowledgable. He gave us options within our budget, explained what materials could be used and the possibility of more work needed after opening walls. We knew what to expect...no surprises, straight forward and concise. The duration of the remodel was a bit of an adjustment, we didn't use our kitchen for about three weeks but everything was smooth, we choose materials, tile, backsplash, floor, etc. install, inspections etc.. By the way, we only decided to invest in changing insulation ( since was poor quality the existing one), also we decided to follow the recommendation of a beam support change. I can say that we stay under budget and the results were satisfactory. We have a new kitchen, new layout, our home is more appealing & I have so much more space to store cookware. After all, Expressions did a great work, we liked the materials & they met our expectations. We decided to write a review since some of you had bad experiences, we experienced the opposite, so we thought its only fair to say that was great with us. We just completed a remodel on our kitchen and living room area with Expressions General Remodeling. They did such a beautiful job and we could not be any happier with how everything turned out. Expressions General Remodeling has done many jobs for us at our rental properties and also recently did a complete kitchen remodel in our own home. They have always done an outstanding job. We had other contractors look at proposed projects and say they could not be done. For example, one was putting washers and driers in a 100-year-old apartment building. Other contractors could not figure out how to do it or said it could not be done, but Arnold of Expressions said "no problem" and was able to do it with no difficulty. When we wanted a wall removed in our home several contractors shied away from it, either because they did not know how to do it or said it was too complicated. We engaged Expression General Remodel to implement a fairly extensive renovation of our 2400 sq ft home. Every room in the house was touched in some way, with new flooring, paint, and lights throughout. We also gutted the kitchen and completely altered its layout. And, in the master, we gutted and expanded the master closets and bathroom into crawl space behind/under the house. That involved engineering work to alter the foundation and structural work to combine two walk-in closets into one, as well as pushing out and re-arranging the bathroom layout. Upon discovering that a known small leak was actually more like 15 years of undetected water intrusion, we later expanded the job to include replacing the sheathing and stucco on the exterior of one side of the house, along with repainting the entire exterior and refinishing multiple redwood decks. All in, the job had us out of the house for three months, with another month or so of work continuing after we moved back into the upstairs (right in line with the original projected timeline). Miles was very easy to work with designing the work to be done, and throughout the management of the project. He was our primary contact and was always responsive and available. He patiently worked through the design process with us, providing a few different renders as we worked through the new layouts for the kitchen and master bathroom. The work crew was also friendly and diligent. Luis ran the show on the ground, and he was a pleasure to work with. And we really appreciated our two shopping days with Janeth, who made the daunting task of selecting counters, tiles, and flooring a breeze. What initially drew us to Expressions was the one-stop-shop nature of their business. We loved that they handled the design, engineering, permitting, and build without us having to engage and coordinate different vendors for any of that. We've witnessed co-workers and friends go through renovations juggling an architect doing design on one hand and a separate contractor to implement the work on the other, and we're really glad we did not have to deal with that headache. I am more than happy to show off there hard work because they really did work hard. My house is very hard to do construction at because of its location. My husband built the home and since he's passed it was very difficult for me to let anyone else work on the home. Kyle told me he was good at coming on budget and finishing on time. He followed through with everything he promised. He just needs to be more understanding about peoples schedules. He wouldn't allow the work to stop because I wasn't able to be there everyday. I don't like people in my home and even though all the workers ended up being lovely people I still was very nervous about it. Although we did not go through with our remodel, our experience with Expressions General Remodel in the planning process was stellar. Remodeling a kitchen is a complicated and stressful process - but Miles was great - he had great communication with us via phone, text, email. He was very flexible with scheduling an appointment with us to evaluate our space, and he was very candid about what would work well for our kitchen. Miles offered design suggestions to improve our kitchen utility and practical options to get the most bang out of our buck. Of all the bids we got, EGR gave the most reasonable bid. In the end we decided to hold off on our remodel for personal reasons - Miles was understanding. When we are ready, I am confident we'll be calling on Expressions General Remodel again. read more

Amazing service from start to finish. Miles, Janeth, Arnold and the on-site crew were a pleasure to work with and always professional. They listened to our ideas and plans, provided feedback and options, and delivered on schedule. We found them to be skilled in all areas, knowledgeable of building codes, and produced excellent work. They were also very good about conferring with us on any issues and offering solutions -- fortunately we encountered a couple of minor problems. We had no difficulties reaching the team and found them responsive via email and/or text regarding any questions we had throughout the remodel. We also requested some changes during mid-project which they easily accommodated. I haven't hired these people, but saw them on TV running a 30% off special. When they came out to give me an estimate, they quoted a verbal price to me before the TV discount (so i should have seen a much lower rate after discount). But when I asked them to send it to me in writing, it was $5500 more than the verbal quote. It seems like they pulled a bait and switch on me by telling me the price already included the discount. This company seems dishonest to me. Customer service was not reputable, I saw enough red flags that I will not be hiring them. Thanks for wasting my time. read more

Unfortunately, we had a very poor experience with Expressions General. While they did do a good job installing the downstairs flooring and painting the family room, the carpet and the carpet installation on our stairs and in the upstairs rooms was less than satisfactory. My feet were continually being poked by the carpet tacking on the stairway. In the upstairs hallway the installation produced numerous seams (see photo). In the master bedroom, in particular, the carpet was laid in two separate directions, so that it appeared as though there were two separate carpets. Additionally, when Expressions General came back to fix a seam in our master, they cut out a piece of carpet which had been used to support our elliptical, which created an new ugly seam resembling a doormat (see photo). Overall, the carpeting aged extremely quickly (we had the carpet less than a year) and when an independent inspector looked at the carpet he said it was of low quality. Expressions General told us it was a grade used in commercial buildings. Finally, in our master bathroom they installed a shower door, which was poorly sealed causing large water puddles after every shower. They came back once to fix the seal, but they only replaced the seal with the same cheap material, which begin peeling off after a few weeks (see photo). The bottom line was we were forced to hire firms to install a new shower door correctly and to install new carpet upstairs and on the stairway. This cost us an additional $6,500! While, Expressions General did not have the quality of carpet that we ended purchasing, they did offer to install any carpet we bought, but after their initial and subsequent installations, we decided we would pass and go with a firm that specialized in carpeting. We cannot recommend Expressions General for anything except laying floor and painting. It was a costly mistake on our part. read more

We started our remodel project with Expressions November 2017. In the beginning things were great. Miles was professional and they provided a reasonable quote. We were not living in the house since the remodel was of the entire interior of the home but made it a point to be on site at least once a day. Our contract was for $80,300 (labor ONLY). We did a walk through and were being as thorough as possible since other bids required this of us. Miles assured us most of the things we were listing were part of the general project and understandably included but we continued to list them off verbally. Due to the rapport we had with Miles we didn't worry about the details being included in writing on the contract. This was our first mistake! Once the project started we were told many things were not included and we had to pay a third part to complete these projects because they quoted us three times the amount of what other contractors wanted. We were supposed to meet to discuss the new bathroom layout but still hadn't set this appointment up past the remodel and $20K payment made. After pressing the issue I finally received a 3D layout of both baths. I had questions but received limited response. Since I had to pull permits by that time (the project was already started) I made changes on the layouts and submitted them to the building department and to Janeth. They made great headway with the work but continued to make mistakes and when I would show up to check on the project since I couldn't get a response from Arnold, Janeth, or Miles there was mistake after mistake. When Janeth or Arnold would finally contact me they were unprofessional, aggressive, and unreasonable. They claimed I was making change orders when it was not. Upon discussion with the crew (who were the most helpful of anyone) it appeared that they had the initial layouts and even after the layout alterations were confirmed with the office the crew was never made aware. The miscommunication was unfathomable. No one was on site to oversee the crew and I had to make it a point to be on site multiple times a day (while working mind you) just to ensure the crew had proper information. After they built a wall into my newborns bedroom without my knowledge and I let that go because I was pregnant and fixing it would be too time consuming I decided that I wasn't going to allow anymore mistakes and that I was going to be insistent that they repair their mistakes and pay for the repair of them. Attempting this was extremely stressful. They walked off the job because I wouldn't pay them based on what they believed to be owed instead of the payment schedule they created. They messed up the tile TWICE and were astonished when I told them to change it and pay for the necessary extra tile. They floored under the cabinets and island in the kitchen and then didn't have enough flooring to finish half of the master bathroom. Also, upset they were made to fix there mistakes. They were reluctant and verbally abusive at every turn. Email wars became common practice to ensure I had everything in writing just in case legal action needed to be taken. Now the tub they installed isn't working after final inspection and even though CA civil code 90 requires they be responsible for their workmanship for one year they aren't taking responsibility for it because a third party installed an outlet weeks before the tub stopped working. I now have an unleveled floor, can't fix flooring issues without taking apart my kitchen in the future because of their flooring mistakes, an inoperable bathtub, and a 4inch wall built into my babies bedroom. AND I had to replace a brand new vent hood that was bent when attempting installation because Arnold (owner) said I couldn't prove it. I'm sure they will reply with their own understanding of how this occurred because they always do. The CSLB is my next step. I know I won't have a real resolve for what has happened to me but save yourself from them. Please look at other reviews. It is not like me to rant or complain or have issues with people. The workers did great work when they were properly instructed and I will not take that away from them but this company is terrible to deal with. I'll upload photos of our home finished. We had our kitchen remodeled by Expressions General Remodeling. I would definitely recommend this company. Miles Sanders came out to give us an estimate and had some great ideas for our project. He could see that I loved the color blue and suggested that I paint my kitchen cabinets dark blue with white walls. I wasn't so sure about that idea, but I absolutely LOVE the result. He was great at helping us stay within our budget with great ideas. Janeth met us at the granite warehouse to help pick out our materials. She was also very helpful and changed my mind on what I had chosen for the flooring. The tiles she recommended are one of the items most people remark on when they see my new kitchen. Crew Chief Arnold did a great job making sure we were satisfied before they were all done. I had two complaints: 1) I would like to have been kept more informed on delays. The project was supposed to take about 3 weeks and ended taking more like 8 weeks due to 2 major delays. We didn't know why no one had shown up for a full week. After we called Arnold, we found out there was a delay, because they had ordered the wrong size cabinet doors. This happened a second time when they had made the wrong size sliding drawers for some cabinets. 2) The painter did a nice job on the cabinets, but we had a lot of over spray. He also did not remove the blinds before he started and did not cover them. They were ruined. However, Arnold made sure to take care of the issues with the over spray areas and replaced the blinds. I would recommend this company for your remodeling project, because they were very responsive, professional, and had some great ideas. read more
