We did Expeditions Lahaina/Lanai Passenger Ferry and it was somewhat underwhelming. The Ferry seemed longer than I thought. The ride there was ok, about 45 minutes. Once we got to Lanai, our guide was there to pick up us up and give us a bit of Lanai history. Basically one man owns 98% of the island. He drove us to Shipwreck beach, which was also underwhelming. However, we did see a lot of turtles swimming near the shore. Our guide showed us the Four Seasons and the town. We ate at Blue Ginger for lunch, one of the only places we could eat since we were not staying at the Four Seasons. There looked like there was fun things to do if you spent the night. But, if you're not staying at the Four Seasons, the only other option is a 10 room hotel. The ride back to Maui was epic! I was sitting upstairs outside and was splashed multiple times. We were soaking wet. It made for a more adventurous ride home. Probably the most exhilarating thing of the whole day! read more

This is a wonderful inter-island service, it's unfortunate we don't have more vendors like this available throughout the state, particularly with the closure of the Moloka'i Ferry this is now the most convenient way of crossing the channel and taking in another island. $30 each way, $50.00 RT for Kama'aina. Ticket packets for (4) Round Trip tickets are also available for $160, great value. Lahaina to Manele: Departs 6:45 am, 9:15 am, 12:45 pm 3:15 pm, 5:45 pm Manele to Lahaina: Departs 8:00 am, 10:30 am, 2:00 pm, 4:30 pm, 6:45 pm Our most recent ferry trip over at 6:45AM was typically calm, the seas in this channel get much rougher later in the day and the evening. Pro Tip: Seat toward the rear of the ship on the bottom floor for the most comfortable ride. Our return trip at 6:45pm in the evening was incredibly turbulent. Massive swells. Needed to physically hang on to our seats to avoid being thrown around. Granted though, we had intentionally sat at the front of the boat for this purpose. Keep the ferry number handy with you to easily reschedule your trip to a later departure time. Activities: Activities on Lana'i are extremely limited. Bring your own snorkel gear to explore Manele Bay. Manele Bay and the Four Seasons are all you can really experience within walking distance. Rabaca's Limousine runs a shuttle service to town for $10.00, The Blue Ginger Café has a beautiful breakfast but go to Coffee Works for your Java. The Four Seasons Brunch $52.00 is worth every penny, plus, I met JOE MONTANA there!! Last time we visited we utilized the services of Lanai Jeep Rental to rent ATV's for the day, trip of a lifetime. Enterprise rents cars too but they are three times the price of renting a jeep that's 5 years older from John at Lanai Jeep Rental. read more

Poor management and operations. An hour before our family dinner was planned on Lanai, we received a voicemail that "a person called in sick" and the ferry wouldn't be happening. I would have issue with this if the company hadn't already committed to provide transportation to a very difficult to get to location. It's unfortunate that the company didn't have some sort of plan to deal with customers because of one ill employee. I would recommend finding more reliable transportation if you are planning something special, because Expeditions isn't a company to put faith in with big, fun family events. read more

Awesome day on Lanai! People, do your research. A lot of the negative reviews here are based on people not doing ANY research. *Call ahead to get your name on the list. We called the morning of our ride, and took the 9:15 ferry. Our names were on the list. Also, get there a half hour early like they tell you, so you can get in line and get a good seat. *When you call to book, no money changes hands. You pay on the boat, and they take cash or credit card. *If you don't want the sun on you, sit inside, because going and coming back both have the sun at the back of the boat. We took the 9:15 ferry to Lanai, and the 2:00 back to Maui. We walked to the beach only, so that was the perfect amount of time for us. The beach is top 5 that we've been to. It felt like a private island beach that a cruise ship takes you to, but without the thousands of people. *There are bathrooms, outside feet washing/rinse off stations, picnic benches, and plenty of awesome beach space. There is a good bit of undertow, so be mindful. *if you want to go to Lanai city, there were shuttles for $10/person each way. We chose to walk to the beach (10 minute walk) *The ferry back can get choppy. The 2:00 is probably the last one you want to consider if you are affected by rough boat rides. The later in the day, the more the trade winds make for a bumpy ride. People have complained about the staff being rude, but they were absolutely fine. A few of them aren't very "chatty", but they're not giving you a tour...they're transporting you from point A to point B. Chat with your companions if you need. We'll definitely use this service again in the future, with a little more exploring of the island. Overall this was a great experience. For $60 round trip/person, it was well worth it to visit another island, and see a great beach. read more

This is an excellent way to have a tour of ALL of the island of Lana'i, not just a walk from the boat dock to the Four Seasons and back. Is there a lot to see on Lana'i? No. Since one company, now one of the billionaire Larry Ellison's, owns 98% of the island, there hasn't been much development of either tourism sites or even natural sites. Or even home sites outside the small town on the island. However the natural sites, and the fabulous views from up high on empty mountain tops and from down low on empty beaches is worth the trip. Our guide Bruce, who managed the wild 4x4 ride during a day of exploring all of the island, made it priceless. He knows both his history and his botany. In Lana'i's case, the two are intertwined - ever since a pissed-off Hawaiian king burnt down every tree on the island some hundreds of years ago. The ferry ride over is great, with beautiful views of the rough mountain faces going down to the ocean. The two Four Seasons hotels are interesting to see. To hear the BS about all the great things Larry Ellison is going to do for the island is entertaining (and hopefully true). What makes it worthwhile as a day trip out of Lahaina is to see the native beauty and efforts that have been made to restore the island for the last 90 years. read more

It's hard not to be a fan of the ferry, considering it's the only regular way to and from Lana'i. Still, I have never had a bad experience with them, so I give them more than just an "A-OK" experience. A few notes for those using this transport: 1) Order your tickets in advance (you can now do it online). Those that show up that day, depending on the time, may find the ferry is already full. It doesn't usually happen, but it's better safe than sorry. 2) The busiest times are the first two (6:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. from Lahaina) and last (6:45 p.m. from Manele Bay). This is when people head over to Lana'i for jobs and day trips, followed by the same people returning at the end of the day. 3) If you want to ride on top during the day, do two things: be there early and have a hat/sunscreen. Many people want to sit on top to watch the ocean (especially during whale watching season), so it fills up fast. In addition, you're out in the ocean with the sun beating down on you; make sure you're protected or else you'll have an unpleasant, sunburned day once on Lana'i. 4) For those that get sea sick, the morning and afternoon ferries are usually best. The evening trip is often much choppier, due to trade winds or a lack of visibility (if nighttime). 5) Have something prepared for any day trip. Some tourists still think they can hop the ferry over and magically be in town. Manele Bay is a good 15 minute drive from town, in the middle of nowhere on the south side of the island. It is not within walking distance of anything, so make sure you've arranged for transport or a shuttle. Be aware of these things and plan ahead, and you'll have an enjoyable visit to the Pineapple Island. read more

Great trip and not too expensive. If you're on Maui definitely try to take the ferry across to Lanai! Worth every penny! The boat is nice and big with plenty of seating inside and up top. If you are taking the trip later in the afternoon, be ready for some rougher seas. If it gets too much, step outside at the back of the boat where the boat is more steady...which also gives you a better view for whale and dolphin watching! On our return trip [this past December] we saw many whales and Spinner Dolphins! Amazing! read more

Absolutely TERRIBLE Customer Service. Some of the staff was nice, but for the most part they were unwilling to help, solve problems or act in a professional way. The staff is RUDE - we were recently on a trip and saw a group threatened by the staff and capt to be thrown off the boat for lack of tickets, which turned out not to be true, causing a delay for everyone on board. They really need to figure out their operation and learn to treat people with respect. It is such a shame since Lanai is such a beautiful place and the ferry is the only way to get there. read more

The only positive experience about this ferry was that the ride was somewhat smooth. Other than that, the ferry was absolutely awful. We arrived at the dock 45 minutes before our departure to avoid waiting in line. The lady at the counter said that we didn't have a reservation (which was proven false by the gate attendee on the dock), and then proceeded to say "are you going to pay me or talk on the phone?" while we were trying to track down the receipt proving we had a reservation. As we got on the ferry, the gate attendee got very frustrated with us because he was confused by the fact that our online reservations were recorded on the paper but we still handed him a reservation slip. The crew overall seemed very condescending and rude. I would not ride this ferry again to deal with the bad customer service and the mediocre boat ride. read more

Reasonable rates and easy to book tickets. The ride is comfortable and pleasant to Lanai. On the way back in the afternoon it can get quite rough so I always take a Dramamine. They have single packets for sale at the store near the dock in Lanai if you happen to forget. Very glad the Lanai ferry is still in service. read more

I wanted to limited Inter-Island flights as much as possible -- For us Mainlanders who don't get a price break on stuff; airline travel no matter how close is horrendously expensive, now add baggage fees...ugggg !! Since we wanted to ferry to our 2nd Island, and Fast Ferry is no more, we chose Lanai since it was close, and easy to ferry over to. Expeditions Ferry is the only real choice -- but don't worry, they do a great job and tickets are reasonable. Non Residents pay $30 each way. Our FS concierge made all the arrangements for us, which made boarding an easier process. The ferry leave from Lahaina; one happenin' little town, and arrives at Lanai City about 40 minutes later. Take it from one who grew up with the Staten Island Ferry -- this is a really nice ride, especially at sunset when we went -- Tourists take your camera, take a to-go cocktail from one of the Lahaina's bars, and sit back and enjoy the ride read more

The best way to get to Lanai, ~$60 round trip. You can buy your tickets at multiple locatons like the tour shops in Lahaina. If you want to listen to a timeshare they will comp the tickets. But my vacations hour is worth more than $60. The best place to buy from for no hassle is directly from the ferry service. Go directly to the harbor and you will see their booth. The trip to the island take less than 1 hour and the harbor on Lanai is with in walking distance to the bay with the famous dolphins. You might need to be flexible, it is a first come first serve. If you venture over, go to the City of Lanai and spread some dollars around. Some decent eats and nice people. read more

We would be lost without the Lāna'i to Maui ferry. A lifeline to Maui stores for Lāna'i residents, and a quick 45 min journey from Lahaina Maui to Mānele Lāna'i for visitors. From November to April, you get a bonus whale watch as humpback whales return to the 'Au'Au channel to breed and to give birth. Sometimes the spinner dolphins chase the ferry's wake. Give yourself plenty of time to park on Lahaina side and arrive at least 20 minutes before departure time. Ferry boards 10-15 min and departs right on time, like a German train. read more

Pretty basic ferry ride. The ride can get a bit bumpy on a windy day so you should keep that in mind. We were lucky enough to see many whales on the ride over! When you get to the marina there are shuttles that charge you extra to take you into Lanai City- worth it for us! Crew was pretty salty. Fiancé left tix in jeep. We were on the list. Got on the boat. 5 mins into the ride back to lahain Maui she realized she left them when guy asked for tix. The deck hand had them turn boat around to drop us off, we ask s if we could run to parking lot and get them out of the jeep, which you could see from the boat. However we would of had to wait 3 hours for next boat so we ended up just paying for a second ticket and I'm pretty sure the scallywag just pocketed the the $50 cash. Tried to explain to said scaly wag that we obviously paid bc we were on the list and allowed on the boat and if they called our hotel where we purchased tix it could be straightened out but the guy said we either pay again or we had to get off boat. Embarrassed as he had no issue yelling this I'm front of the whole boat of 50 or so people we just paid a second time. By the guy was so rude about the whole thing we will not be using this charter ever again. Just to see another Hawaiian Island is reason enough to take the ferry to and from Lanai. Not quite knowing where to sit and not wanting to get super sunburned by sitting on the back deck seats, we chose to sit in the smaller I side area on the same level as the captain manning the ferry. If you do as well, sit to one of the sides, in the middle row and you'll get some AC blown your way. We first sat in the first row and it was super stuffy. Way to Lanai is rather smooth and easy going. We took the 4:30 ferry back and it was very bumpy and lots of white caps. I heard the later you go, the worst it gets. Great way to get to 'another island'! As you exit the ferry, head all the way to the left of the dock to take the island shuttle if you don't have tickets already for a different shuttle. $10 credit card only! read more
