Lānai is only nine miles from Maui, the short trip took about 50 mins across the Auau Channel. Cost was about $60/ person round trip and includes additional fees. Print your voucher and bring it with you at check-in. There are various times you can depart from island to island. We booked from 9:45a to 5:30p Check-in and boarding process was easy and smooth. We were required to check-in one hour to boarding time. The ferry departs from Lahaina Harbor directly across from the Pioneer Inn. On Lanai, the ferry departs from Manele Harbor. In Lahaina we had to search for long term lot that allowed all day parking because most free public parking are 3 hours limit and enforced. We found one located on Luakini St (behind the Wharf Center). We had no problems when we returned from Lānai. We paid $50 for all day parking. The boat is two levels of seating, choose to sit inside or outside the boat and enjoy sunshine and ocean breeze. The boat ride was choppy but I didn't get seasick which I'm usually prone to. So much fun! Super easy to book online and when you get to the dock check in at the office and they will give you your paper tickets. We waited like 15 min to board and we chose to sit upstairs on the outside so we had amazing views. The seats are comfy and there are storage areas down on the lower level. Parking is easy right at the dock and you can pay on your app just scan the sign. Plenty of parking for everyone. We absolutely enjoyed the trip to Lana'i and back. The views are stunning. We are a boating family so for us it was great fun and definitely would recommend this trip for the day or spend the night at the beautiful Four Seasons hotel. Totally glad we did this trip. Ferry ride was from Ma'alaea Harbor - not Lahaina. Super easy to reserve tickets on line and the company provided stupid-easy directions for embarking in Maui to include parking while we were on Lana'i for a day trip. Staff was efficient, friendly, and professional in keeping passengers moving and safe - even some who were mobility challenged on our trip back. Here are my tips from my experience. Go extra early for parking on the Maui side. I had tickets for the 11am ferry and got there at 10:30. No spots in that or the adjoining lot. We were not the only ones that kept circling. We finally had no option but to park in a spot that we weren't sure was a spot and paid for it. Expedition was telling us this is normal and to take any dirt parking we can find (make sure to pay for it) and park in the aquarium lot if we have to. We barely had enough time to walk back. It was very windy at the harbor and the tickets flew right out of my shorts pocket. I didn't even know it happened but an employee saw it and vouch for me to get another one. Secure those tickets. Secondly, when we took the 5:30 return trip, the seas was super rough. Worse motion sickness I've ever had and it lasted an hour. I threw up multiple times and so did others around me. Make sure you grab a sick bag if you see one and grab 2 since they are not that wet resistant. Those bags were like gold during the ride. I sat in the 1st level and it was like being inside a washing machine. I was told it's not usually this bad but I dunno.... Other than that, it was a smoothly run operation. The boat has 2 levels. The top has an open and enclosed area. Prime seats seems to be the last row in the open area where it faces the opposite direction so you can see unobstructed view. We took the Lanai Expeditions 4 x 4 Half-Day Trekker Tour. This is in partnership with Rabaca's. Rabaca's is a business that operates a shuttle from Manele Boat Harbor to Lanai City and also provides the Trekker Tour. The cost of the tour is $196/person and includes the ferry fares. The ferry leaves on time and the ride took about 45 to 50 minutes. It was a beautiful day and the scenery was spectacular. Once on Lanai, our tour guide, Russ, took us to see the various sights. We saw the Garden of Gods, Shipwreck Beach, the Cat Sanctuary, and Lanai City. We were able to spend about one hour at the Cat Sanctuary and were not rushed at our other stops. We also saw the two Four Seasons hotels from the outside. Our guide was informative and since, he lives on Lanai, he had interesting tidbits of information known only to locals. read more

Writing this review for 2 reasons. 1. We experienced very rough waters on both routes, and these weren't the last of day ferry's. Expeditions gave us no prior warning of this. Maybe not their responsibility but it did impact our experience. I intentionally didn't book the last ferry of the day after reading other reviews and that didn't matter, it was still incredibly bumpy. 2. I do not recommend the ferry for family with young children. Due to the rough waters, I was told I couldn't stand up on the ship with my child, even in a carrier. I fully understand they were concerned for our physical safety but they should have mentioned that we wouldn't be able to move about with kids prior to 5 minutes before we departed. read more

Booked our ferry ride online. $30 one way, so to get back to Maui, it was $60 total. It was really easy to buy the tickets and check in. You can show them your voucher electronically or printed out. They have a little booth close to the wharf to check in. It's quite a spacious boat. With seating upstairs as well as enclosed seating downstairs. Boats were pretty clean. Seating was comfortable. Ride takes approximately 45-55 minutes, depending on which way you're going. Yes, the waves do get rough the later it gets but I was not bothered by it. They have restrooms onboard, and they also sell some drinks (non-alcoholic). No snacks though. But you can definitely bring your own food. They have an area for people to store larger luggage and other items. We saw some whales and dolphins on both trips, so that was a pretty nice experience. No need to book a whale sightseeing tour!!! Lanai is a beautiful place to visit. And this company makes it happen. They have 4 rides both ways. Leaving lanai, they have a 0645, 0945, 1300, and 1600. Leaving maui from Lahaina, they have 0815, 1115, 1430, and 1730. We parked behind the wharf shopping center. They have all day parking for $35. The nearest free parking is only for 3 hours, so that wasn't feasible for us. Both trips, the ferry left on its scheduled time. And according to the lady I spoke with over the phone, if you wanted to come back on an earlier ferry, you can do that, which is good to know. read more

My experience starts with booking with this company in advance, actually it's discount Hawaii that is affiliated with this ferry. I'm giving them a 5 star because is the smooth flow of instructions. You see online, I had difficulties booking in advance but had a call and email to complete the booking. I guess they have to request for a link prior to. Anyway, we booked on a Thursday from 9:45 to Lanai , about a 45-55 minute, approximately 9+ miles crossing on a channel (I can't remember the name) and leave Lanai at 5:30pm. They have different schedules to and from. We decided to stay about 8 hours in lanai. You can request to be back early or later if you wanted to but keep in mind that every 2nd Thursday of the month, the 2:30 lanai to Maui is omitted because they conduct a safety meeting and protocols for the whole staff during afternoon. We got here about 8:55 close to 9am. They want us to check in at 8:45 but no worries as long as you have your reservation (printout), go to the booth, get your tickets and finally tell your last name to the person that checking ppl in you should be okay. The ferry was on time. The ride across the channel was somewhat a little choppy , the crew are professional, boarding and de boarding went smooth. They go by sections. The morning was fine (likely due to the calmer seas), but the ride back was really rough. The staff did not warn us until we had already left the Lanai harbor -- and they mentioned it very casually. From the Lahaina Harbor the ferry leaves at 6:45, 9:15, 12:45, 3:15, and 5:45. From the Manele (Lana'i) Harbor the ferry leaves at 8:00, 10:30, 2:00, 4:30, and 6:45. THIS IS WEATHER DEPENDENT and our guide from Lana'i shared that she always brings her toothbrush when she goes to Lahaina because of the inclement weather. We left the Lahaina harbor at 9:15, it was a cruise ship dock day and the harbor was an absolute zoo. Be careful where you park (many spaces are 3 hours) because you will get a ticket. We were booked to return at 4:30 but due to high wind advisory we were encouraged to take the 2:00. The boat is in great condition and we sat on the top and saw whales. On the ride home, we got stuck inside (air conditioning) and it was a VERY BUMPY RIDE back. When you dock at Manele the beach is a quick walk. There are excellent facilities. You could also book a tour and have a guide pick you up (like we did). Would I make the trip again? Only if I hit the lottery and booked a stay at the Four Seasons Resort. read more

45 minute ferry rides to and from Lanai. After some research, Expeditions seems to have the best pricing. The gal at the ticket booth was sweet and friendly and said that if we found we needed more time in Lanai to just call the number on the back of the ticket to see if they have room. On the ferry there is inside and outside seating on the top half of the boat. The bottom half is only indoors but you are allowed to stand on the back deck area (so long as you aren't blocking the stairway). We left at 9:45am and everything moved swiftly that morning. We had planned on taking the 2:30pm ferry back to Maui but ended up calling to see if they had availability for their 5:30pm departure, and they did. We are SO GLAD that we were able to stay longer, it allowed more time for some of the greatest snorkeling we've ever experience and for some gorgeous treks to see the tide pools and hike around (in addition to the Cat Sanctuary, which we hit up first). Highly recommend. For some reason the ride back to Maui was slow slow slow.. the folks on board took forever to come off, it felt like it took forever to get on.. Aside from that, the ride was a bit intense and turbulent (but that keeps it fun and interesting). Some info we wish we knew in advance? Line up to get on the boat as early as you can if you want to sit outside on the top half. It always fills up first and there aren't THAT many seats up there. If you sit indoors upstairs, you can't see out so in my humble opinion it isn't worth it. We sat inside downstairs on the way over to Lanai and it was nice. On the way back, the four of us were able to squeeze on to a bench next to this couple. It was a hard wooden (maybe plastic) bench, crazy uncomfortable. My guide was josh and he was very knowledgeable of the island, very accommodating and professional and also let me customize the end of my tour. I got to see lana'I city, shipwreck beach, the garden of gods, and the cat sanctuary & got to hang by the beach until the last departure. What a rip off. We needed to go from Lahaina Maui to LanaI to see the cat sanctuary. each way is an hour long ride. trip ticket cost $140 for 12 yo and up, for a toddler $68. In addition, after landing on lanai we needed to take a shuttle to cat sanctuary that cost $10 each way per adult so $80 total for round trip for 4 adults toddler was free. We also paid $6 for parking.. In total the trip to cat santiary cost $710. I didn't look up the price ahead of time and I was with family visiting from out of town so I just bit the bullet and paid. To be honest who expects that kind of price for a ferry ride. The cat sanctuary was fantastic. We were disappointed the sanctuary gets nearly nothing from the exorbitant transportation cost. Trust me the sanctuary is a wonderful place for the homeless kitties. Just look at the pictures online, save that money and donate directly to the sanctuary. You're welcome. read more

The four of us ferried to Lana'i on a beautiful Sunday morning. We didn't buy our tickets online but luckily it wasn't crowded. I guess it's not too crowded at 6:30am. We parked behind the Lahaina Grill. There is a lot that is only $3 all day. Because we got there before 7am we had a pay an extra $3 so for $6 we had parking all day. Not a bad deal. The ferry leaves on time so be sure to get there in plenty of time. We will definitely do this again. Not the best customer service (one friendly staff that served as a greeter), but it was not a big issue as I did not need to interact with staff very much. My biggest gripe was not being informed about the availability of sick bags. I would have grabbed one as the waves were too rocky for my liking. I chose an early afternoon return, as I was told by a friend that the later return times have rougher waters. I appreciated that I was warned about the waves, but sadly knew that I wouldn't be able to enjoy a meal on Lanai since the morning also had rocky waters. So I didn't have a fantastic experience with the excursion but I'm very glad that I went and I would definitely go again my initial issue was parking there was no details provided with the reservation but the reservation how parking in the area is typically not for longer than 6 hours I dowers I circled around and did find a location that allowed you to park longer than 6 hours cost me 33 bucks so that's OK no feedback information about where to sit you just grab a spot and sit down so that was fine but that was fine people weren't wearing their masks as they should be but nobody ever said anything to them and I was grateful they weren't sitting too close to me What I did I really appreciate was I ended up finishing up early and they allowed me to take a earlier ferry than the one I was booked and that was very helpful also I got to see lots and lots and lots of whales read more

Great inter-island Ferry service between Lana'i and Maui. The ride is about $30 and takes 45-55 minutes depending on the water and the weather that day. It was fairly crowded the day I rode with tons of people ferrying between Lana'i to Maui. There is plenty of seating and space for bags on the ferry so that wasn't a problem at all. I left from the Lana'i side and rode to Maui. The little ferry station on Lana'i was cute and had a small shop where you could go and get some Dole Whip while you waited or sit on one of the many benches and look at the water. Very peaceful and calm and small town. A big shock awaits you when you get to this stop on the Maui side because it's completely different with TONS of people milling about standing in the way and nothing but shopping and stores on the other side. They were kind enough to stop for us to take photos of close up whales, but you gotta be quick to get them! Bought tickets online last minute , it was so easy. The ferry ride itself was very comfortable I actually fell asleep on the way there. Way back was a bit choppy I got splashed a bunch sitting on the back port side but it was refreshing ! Don't be in a rush to go anywhere. It seems lots of people have luggage and/or other big items like coolers and such. So if you sit on the top deck just be chill and wait , takes a few minutes to get off and on. Only complaint was when we checked in early , the girl at the ticket booth said we definitely needed to get the shuttle to go to Lanai City or to rent a car in advance. We texted the shuttle number and got 2 spots last minute. She neglected to tell us the shuttle is $10 cash/ per person each way. We found out after they dropped us at Lanai City. Maui to Lanai ferry. Sooooooo much better than taking a puddle jumper. We've taken this ferry the last two times we went to Lanai. Very easy and cheap. Book ahead to get your ticket and then get down to the docks to cue. They were very cool about keeping an eye on our bags as we had some time to kill before the departure time. They made loading and unloading very easy. Which I had dreaded because of the golf clubs and other luggage we needed to bring along. No problems with storage, just with jackass passengers that jump you in line and then wave you ahead. Always has to happen when you're loaded with luggage and they've got nothing. Diva with three little brats, I'm looking your way. Views from the ferry were great. This time we were in the morning and we've also taken the later (sunset) ferry. Ferry ride was smooth but one should ask "why go to Lanai?" In my zealousness to visit ALL the Hawaiian islands (beyond those most well known), we made our list of things to do and eagerly boarded the Ferry. Unfortunately, not one local nor one website informed us that Lanai is basically closed to visitors and residents - for the most part. The two Four Season Resorts and all their restaurants, golf courses, etc require you be a guest to set foot on their grounds. Any attempt to reach them by phone or Open Table app is fruitless. They tell you in Lahaina (at the Ferry Terminal) that you can get a $10 all-day Hop-On/Hop-Off trolley in Lanai. Upon arrival however, you learn that hasn't been available for quite awhile. $10 will get you one-way to Lanai City, and $10 more will take you to the next destination and $10 more will take you down to the beach and $10 more ... you get the idea. There is little to eat, there is little to see, there is no alcoholic beverages in any restaurant until after 5PM (except one that was closed because the owner was on vacation). One golf course was converted to a zip line/adventure park under Larry Ellison. My 2 Cents at the time of this writing as we enter Covid 2022: Lanai is a waste of a perfectly good day in paradise. We took the 9:45 am ferry to Lanai on 7/16/22. We were warned that the last trip of the day back at 5:30 pm may be cancelled due to high surf. We had tickets to return at 2:30 pm. We went to the cat sanctuary on Lanai for a couple of hours and returned back to the ferry dock only to be told our 2:30 pm ferry had been canceled. We assumed the Expeditions ferry would have a contingency plan in place and would help us with alternatives to return to Maui but no....they said they couldn't help us. They basically left us stranded on Lanai with 3 young children....no food, shelter, or a way back to Maui. So disappointing! There were 144 of us stranded. Expeditions should have had a disaster plan in place. We ended up having to sleep at a FEMA shelter (high school gym) with our children for the night along with 60 others. There was only one available hotel on the island that night at a rate of $4k. Expeditions did not help us with accommodations, food, or a way to return to Maui. The ferry was canceled for two days in total. A local woman (Alberta de Jetley) somehow coordinated with the mayor to charter a small plane to take us back to Maui the following day at our own expense. We paid $101 per person that was NOT reimbursed by Expeditions. Then we had to pay for an Uber to get back to our car once on Maui. the only good thing about this experience were the kind local people of Lanai. They bought us food, gave us cell phone chargers, and gave us blankets. When we returned to Maui, I contacted Expeditions about a refund for our ferry tickets. After some arguing, they did refund our entire ferry rate. However we were still out $500 for my family of 5 to take the charter plane home, plus $30 for the Uber. Bottom line....don't travel with Expeditions unless you have a backup plan in place. They will leave you stranded if the ferry gets cancelled and will not help. The company should have cancelled all the ferry trips for that day if they had an idea that the later trips would get cancelled. Never in a million years did I think I would have to sleep in a FEMA shelter while on vacation in Hawaii with my young children. read more

No Thrills Water Taxi Service that gets you to Lanai the sea becomes rough in the afternoon so you can justify it you mind stay overnight in Lanai and travel in the morning. I think the highlight was talking to the local taxi driver on our way from the Four Seasons hotel to the City. I've traveled on ferries throughout the world and this was an enjoyable experience. Boat wasn't too old, staff were nice, but no snack bar due to Covid. This was my first time on the Lana'i ferry--and it was awesome. We plopped our coolers inside the boat on the bottom floor (there's a space for large items) and grabbed a seat. The upstairs outdoor deck fills up really fast so you'll need to be early and in line to snag one of those spots. I chose to stand at the back on the bottom so I could take it all in and of course, take a million photos. The staff was really nice and getting your tickets is super easy. The only issue is parking--the dirt lot is a few blocks away, which is fine--but the sign reads: for 3 hours parking max. We planned to be gone the entire day. We did end up parking there and it was fine, but I'm not sure if we just got lucky or what? Seats are pretty comfortable, the ride was smooth and the boat was really clean. DEF looking forward to my next ride. Bring a hoodie for traveling as it can get cool when the wind picks up. read more

Guide Bruce Harvey was extremely knowledgeable, patient, friendly, all with an engaging personality. Due to Covid social distancing, the tour was private!
