Excelsior Brewery had been on my list for a very long time. I finally made it to the neighborhood last weekend to check it out. I stopped in on a Friday night and the place was crazy. Definitely a hot spot for the locals. They had a reggae band and a food truck out back. They have a nice big patio out front and an area for people to sit out back. It was a very fun, lively atmosphere. As for beers I tried the Sunburn Cherry Wheat and the Big Island Blonde. The Sunburn Cherry Wheat was awesome. It was very similar to a sour, however it wasn't too sour or too sweet. The wheat nicely balanced out the cherry flavor. I wish they had this one on tap year round. The Big Island Blonde was terrible. I do love a light beer, especially on a hot summer day. But there is something wrong with this blonde. It tasted super skunked. I couldn't even drink half of it. I told a few of my friends afterwords that I thought I just got a bad beer because the keg was bad. But they said they had the same experience and didn't finish it. I will be back the next time I'm in the neighborhood to try something dark, but I really hope they make some changes to their blonde. read more

Dog friendly patio. Boom. This is 100% a warehouse location with not too many frills. We sat around and enjoyed a few brews on a Friday afternoon. There was GREAT food traffic for their tucked back parking lot location, lots of cyclists came by and filled their growlers. I've lived so close to this place all my life and have never gone inside until a few days ago. My boyfriend is a huge fan of breweries, and was visiting from Arizona, and insisted that we go here. And I'm glad we did! I'm really not a big beer drinker, so I got the (I believe peach) sour, the only sour on their menu. And I thought it was great, it's a good beer for the non-beer drinker. In addition to the great drinks, there was a live band the night we went. I believe they have live music pretty frequently. They were actually really good and entertaining. I can't remember their band's name, but they were a bunch of sweet old guys who have a lot of talent. The seating inside is pretty limited, so be prepared to stand on busy nights. They also have an outdoor area with some games as well, and it was nice to be out there on a summer night. Another great thing about this place is that they allow dogs both inside and outside on the patio! This is super convenient because so many people are walking their dogs in Excelsior. I'm not sure if they had a parking lot to themselves, but parking in Excelsior is pretty easy, as you can park anywhere on the street for free. The last cool thing about Excelsior Brewing Co is that that you can actually tour their Taproom for completely free. Will be back! read more

What an awesome Brewery! I went on a Friday night with some friends to check it out. We had heard that it was refreshed recently and wanted to check it out. What a place! Upon arrival, it was like we walked into an awesome beer bash with your closest friends. As we zip lined our way to the Bar, we walked by tons of people laughing and playing beer games. The place was busy but we were able to get a beer almost right way (always a plus). Review of the menu presented lots of options! I opted for the Blonde Raspberry beer which was tart but a really great light beer. My friends opted for the American Pale Ale and also liked the beer. YA know, going to a Brewery can always throw me for a loop--all either love it or hate it. But I loved their beer--and I liked that they had a very big selection that was brewed right there! After we got our beer, we took a seat near the stage (where people were playing a giant game of Jenga). A few minutes after sitting down, we started watching a hilarious game of houla hoop, in which everyone was dancing and laughing. It eventually became a competition and everyone around started watching. At the same time, in the corner of the bar, I saw another fun beer game that involved a long rope that hit the wall. $5 or $6 a pint. Excelsior is a great little brewery that doesn't try to put on the fancy show that a 612 or Fulton does. Its like drinking in a buddies garage is the best thing I can equate it too. They have folding chairs and table seating for approx 40 so those fill up fast. Lots of bicyclist are here and you can get a free pint by wearing the Excelsior Bike jersey in while riding your bike. Stopped in today for their Grand Re-Opening!... Had a pint of the Wauwatosa.... Fantastic!! The beer tender was friendly and funny. Wasn't overcrowded... Plenty of the room in the taproom and then on the patio. Appreciated that there was a conveniently a stack of chairs by the patio door...so you could grab one. I'm not into craft beer or much of a beer drinker. I can usually find something I can can tolerate for one or two glasses. They change the menu often though so, I am continually trying new ones. My husband likes it or at least a couple of the classic beer options. But, it is a fun climate and I love MOST of the live music. Since Bayside closed it's great to have another local option for live music at night even though they close early. We are lucky to have you in the town. You bring a lot of people to our area which is great for the economy of the town ;we are a ways out of the metro and winters are tough on local businesses. read more

Been going to this brewery since they opened in 2012. Started with a small taproom. Now they have taken over the entire building, which I think used to be an auto repair shop. They have a great selection of craft beers, including their main regular beers, they offer many seasonal beers. The staff is great! Love this brewery! read more

I'm proud to say that I was there on day one for Excelsior Brewery as they started to crush grains and have been back frequently. What Excelsior has done is bottled the essence of craft brewing and the experience of being "close to the source". The owners and staff are friendly, the atmosphere is welcoming, the beer is great and unique with a particularly malty style. It's incredibly fun to talk to the owners and hear their passion for the art and business of brewing, plus the atmosphere makes you feel like you were invited into someone's business for a quick sample - forklifts and kegs nearby and bits of authentic decor. I'd highly recommend going if you've never been: remember that they're only open Thur-Sat nights, that dogs have to stay outside the doors and you and your beer need to stay inside the door due to health code and liquor laws. read more

Totally LAME. The first time we went there we stood on the other side of the bathroom wall and had to leave early from the stench of pee. Today on Mother's Day - went there and could not believe how empty it was. There was enough of a crowd but plenty of tables and chairs inside for seating. The line for the beer was about 15 long which seemed so odd since the tables were all empty. There was one guy pouring and taking money and another sort of assisting and then one off to the side talking to a couple. I thought it looked like I could leave the line and order a beer. The line was ridiculously slow and the guy off to the side was doing nothing. It did not make ANY sense. I left the line and walked over and asked him to pour me a full Brown Ale. He did and then told the cashier. I gave the cashier a $20. for a $7- beer and I could not believe the length of time it took him to count out my change in DOLLAR BILLS. I think a 2nd grader would of been twice as fast on the return. Unbelievable. The line was STILL not moving and the guy off to the side that helped me, though he saw I cut out of line - he continued back to DOING NOTHING while the line stood still. REALLY? Way to appreciate your customers - EXCELSIOR BREWING! I went outside for a bit. Came back inside to sit down and saw the LAME guy that helped me floating around like he needed to pick up empty glasses from tables that were clearly EMPTY and CLEAN. He managed to find one glass and then went off on his slow-could-not-care-less attitude. I looked at the line and it was even longer when I was there. UNBELIEVABLE. This guy was so lame while people were standing in line - clueless. He absolutely did not care at all. The line was to the door and only 2 people working or maybe even one. It seemed only one register running. After I drank my beer, I wanted to get another one but I counted 25 people in the line and two people helping. When I went to the back of the room I saw the LAME guy YAWNING off to the side. NOt a yawn of TIREDNESS but a YAWN of RELAXING MORE. I am so comfy YAWN. I asked him if he worked there and he said YES. I asked him why he was off yawning while 25 people were standing lined up to the DOOR. He absolutely did not care in any capacity. He basically said SO WHAT / TOO BAD. I told him I would YELP about his lame service and ATTITUDE and he told me in the future he would not allow me back in to the location. I asked him if his business license allows him to decide who can be a patron or not. I asked his name and he would not tell me. I asked the guy pouring beer who the manager was and he pointed at the LAME GUY and said his name is CHRIS. He did not care either though there were people lined to the door. Making money and giving good service was not on the agenda - for SURE. If they were my employees they would be DONE and OUT. Pathetic service and attitudes that make NO SENSE. Why? I am SHOCKED that a PLACE of BUSINESS in EXCELSIOR, MN - and one that carries the NAME EXCELSIOR brewing would have someone as idiotic and lacking in professionalism, courtesy, gratefulness and ANY BUSINESS SENSE as this lame idiot. HIS NAME IS CHRIS LAPPEN - and he is an ass-is-tant (lame) MANAGER. I asked the other guy pouring beer that can't seem to count dollar bills very quickly - and he laughed. They thought it was funny. I came here with high hopes of great beer straight from the brewery. They had four beers on tap, so I decided to go for a flight of beer. While all the beers I tried were good, none of them stood out as exceptional. They were all rather boring and average, which is why I gave it a 3 star rating. The service in the taproom was pretty efficient, they turned over the customers pretty fast, which made it feel less like a micro brewery and more like a fast food joint. So my search continues for a great Brewery/Brewpub in the Twin Cities area. As I entered this place, I thought it had real potential. It reminded me of some of the Southern California breweries I've been to (Lost Abbey comes to mind). Basically a warehouse. That's a good thing. It was a Saturday night and the place had a nice crowd seemingly enjoying themselves and the beer. I ordered 2 flights for me and my girl for $5 each (not a bad price at all). But after finding a seat and finishing half of them, I realized that they seemed incredibly flat. All 4 of them. I finished my flight then got up and asked the server about the flatness and he said the stout is normally like that, and there may be a problem with the CO2 in a couple. I ordered another flight and indeed the lager foamed over as he poured it, and the others seemed to have carbonation as well. But within 2 minutes of sitting down the head had all but disappeared, and I could only see a few bubbles rising in the lager (none in the others). I've drank a lot of beers in a lot of breweries, but this stuff was the flattest I've ever had. I think it would have been quite tasty if it had more bubbles. I mean, it was tasty, not remarkable, but beer needs suds. Very little if any lacing on the glasses either. Also, the American Pale Ale was described as "very hoppy". I didn't think so. read more

This place used to be our favorite hangout spot when we moved to town last April, but the past few visits have really turned me off to the brewery. I still enjoy the beer, but the customer service at the brewery has really gone down hill fast now that they are getting starting to grow around the metro area and have hired new help at the bar. The other thing that turned me off is that they won't fill growlers with a different brewery logo on them, which was a first for me. Maybe it's a Minnesota thing, but any of the other breweries I've been to in the Midwest would be glad to sell you beer no matter what type of jug you had. I was given the reason, "We'll only pour our beer in an Excelsior vessel...". Even after that exchange, I offered to buy an Excelsior growler filled with their bitteschlappe brew, but was told that too wasn't possible. Apparently they won't tap fill the growlers but instead use some type of "growler filling machine". I was pointed towards a chalk board that listed about a half dozen beers they'll fill, but 4 were crossed out even though they were still serving the crossed out beers by the pint. This was 7pm on a Saturday. Long story short, I walked out and took my business elsewhere. Not sure when I'll be back. read more

My bride recently brought me here on a "date night" and I cannot tell you how much fun it was. She had purchased a daily deal from a site that I am unsure of right now, plus they don't pay me enough to give them a shameless plug. Anyhow this deal was for two pints, two full growlers, two pint glasses, and two 5 oz tasting glasses all for $29 I believe. They claimed that this was over 50% off, which I suppose is possible with tax, but without tax my small town math tells me it was less than that. But either way we paid less than we would have with out the deal. As for the place, it is certainly a little out of the way, the address is 3rd Street, but the "store front" is in the alley behind the store fronts on the east side of Water St in downtown Excelsior. Though its a little hard to find for those who don't have an intimate knowledge of Excelsior I think it is certainly worth the effort. Their tap room is like another reviewer described, is really the void between actual working space in the brewery, the fermentation vessels are in the same room and not sectioned off into their own room like some larger breweries. Hanging out in the tap room was like a much cooler, upscale version of a college garage kegger, in which the beer is brewed in this garage and tastes significantly better than it did back then. I really had a nostalgic feeling as we were there. Just the thought of these memories nearly brings a tear to my eye. The one major caveat that I have with them was that they only had two types of beer on tap and only one type of beer in growlers. I was pleased as punch with the choices, XCLR Pale Ale and Bitteschlappe Brown Ale, since I probably would have chosen them anyways. But my bride who is still very much developing her beer palate to appreciate all things not Miller, Bud, or Coors related would have much preferred another type, specifically the Big Island Blonde Ale. I went here on a beer tour and I would for sure come back. I highly recommend coming here for a tour. Ben was our tour guide and he was great to listen to. Heck, anyone that was going to go to law school and then canned that idea to start a brewery is a cool guy in my book. Well, if you can make the business successful! Look at their website, you can stop here on the weekend and get a beer for only $5.00. The only thing I would say that I did not like was the Sunburned beer or something similiar. I have had fruit flavored beers at other breweries and they were better tasting. With that said though, I did like their other beer. Oh, and don't forget to take home a growler!
