I came in for the first time, mostly because their Barbacoa Short Rib CrunchWrap seems to feature in every review of the Durham Food Hall. At $19, it's not a cheap lunch, but Wow!, is it tasty! Great variety of spices and flavors, from the crisped cheese on the outside of the tortilla to the sauces and combination of ingredients inside. Unless you have a huge appetite, cut it in half right away and wrap up the other half for another meal - it's a LOT of food, and you'll savor it for a good while. Service is walk-up or through the QR code on the bar. Pickup window is around the corner from the cashier, and while it's not a restaurant fashion photo presentation, it makes up for every bit of that in flavor! I need to return with reinforcements at some point so I can venture further down their menu! read more

Food Halls: good idea in theory - like a permanent food truck rodeo, but it's rare to find a good one. The ones in Charlotte and Raleigh are forgettable. DeKalb in NYC lower east side and Reading Terminal market in Philadelphia are unbelievable. 3 of us went to the Durham hall, nearly went to the Yaki one but finally decided to go for this place; each of us got crunchwraps: 2 of us got short rib barbacoa (heaps of shredded beef), one of us got the Chorizo. We got 3 teas (they charged $3 a piece for standard grocery store bottled tea) from them and a large chips with guacamole. Cost was $80 which included $11 for "living wage" charge (unadvertised forced tip essentially), and tip (we chose 2% as no added service was offered by the staff). The clerk neither offered nor mentioned any type of salsa option with the meal, so we went back and asked - the sauces for 3 of us were extra $1.50 plus tax/living wage/tip. No thanks. Without sauce the crunchwraps are ok - adequate vegetables and we just garnished our crunchwraps with the guacamole that we had ordered. The chips given to us were rather a small portion for the 3 of us. Overall the beef in the crunchwraps was fair (not great) quality. The portion size for $17+tip/living wage/taxes=$27/each was miniscule. A hungry average-sized grown man would be starving after just one crunchwrap. For $27 a person we should have felt either very full or receive something unusually special. This was not it. The forced living wage charge was a nasty surprise given the minimal service the staff presented - please make this a voluntary thing for those who are inclined to support this. The misleading tip percentage indicator was another scam. $10 tip off a $60 total of the meal is NOT 2% but 16.7% - their "calculator" is fraudulent. I feel sorry for those who chose the 5, 10,15% options. This place has a inexplicably over-rated reviews on yelp, restaurantji, tripadvisor, google, etc. I would suggest you drive further down the road and try a variety of much better places like Qshack, fullsteam, refectory, etc. As an afternote, I've noticed that review ratings by people on all rating sites are massively over-blown and over-rated - 4 and 5 stars are given out willy-nilly to the worst of restaurants like this one. Customers need to learn to discriminate between good and bad - ratings should appropriately reflect the experience in order to encourage better food and service. As someone who has lived in the triangle since 1990 I know that Durham NC has just a handful of very nice restaurants and probably 95% very poor to average ones. This is lower than average for a city this size but is so due partly to a transient student population along with the seasonality of the overall population (city business dies during the summer and many promising restaurant businesses fail from it). Unfortunately the surviving businesses may be overcharging for food in an attempt to make up for the predictably poor business in the summertimes. Perhaps all college towns are like this. Therefore I've decided the pricing for this place is forgivable. What they could improve on would be offer a choice of salsa included with the high pricing of their food, consider being much more generous with their chips, especially when they can plainly see that 3 grown adults are ordering. This would lose them next to nothing in profits while creating a sense of value for the high price. --------------- this is a response to the business owner's points regarding my poor review. I missed the part on the menu that stated that chips were "unlimited" - this is a very good tip for future goers and I wished the clerk would've reminded us of that. Regarding the "living wage" announcement - I missed that "1 foot sign" at the chaos of the register also, but there's no option to opt out of it still. Regarding the idea that I suggested they were deceiving guests - this was in reference to the faulty chip charge percentages. The "2% tip" is INCORRECT compared to the total charge of the meal - a petty point, but it is inarguably a fraud by definition and leaves a bad taste in the customers mouth and was probably triggered me to review your restaurant. The idea that "not forget the salsas" in your sign means NO SALSA WILL BE INCLUDED in the meal are two different ideas. Why not say more clearly "no salsas are included in the meals?" You don't do this because it is disgraceful to do this. Conclusion is that I don't want a refund and 2/5 rating is well deserved for your restaurant. read more

It is a life changing experience to have the Crunchwrap. I asked what it was, and the high end server behind the bar kindly tried to explain something about a pinwheel tortilla which I didn't follow. This review is maybe more of a 3.5 but I'm going to round up because of how tasty the food was. When I was at Durham Food Hall and saw Ex-Voto had crunchwrap's, I knew immediately what I was having for dinner. It was really good too! I liked the flavoring of this a lot. I'm glad I got this to eat in person though because I don't think it would have held up as a to-go option. I feel like the nature of the presentation was really lazy though.... just tossed in a paper bag on a plastic tray. It does feel like fast food because of that. I think this would work better as a late night post-drinks spot if they want to keep that vibe, but the thing is they close at 8. I'm learning there are so many good options at the Durham Food Hall. After perusing their menu, we decided to order three different tacos plus a Jarritos soda for brunch. I placed the order online, and our order was waiting on a table inside when I arrived. It looks like everything is a la carte, so don't expect salsa and sides with your order unless you add it. Fresh west coast style Mexican but not amazing. I had to get the 7 layer bowl minus 2 layers (creme & hoop cheese) and the rest of the ingredients were good. I wanted to be wowed but I wasn't. Ex-Voto was the place I was the most excited about in the Durham Food Hall. And it didn't disappoint! I did a takeout order over the weekend, and my veggie breakfast burrito was waiting for me on the table--meaning I was in and out in less than 20 seconds, which I super appreciated in this weird times! Once I got home and could consume the beautifully swaddled burrito, I was transported to my time in San Diego. I've missed good burritos ever since I moved back to the east coast, and this one best resembled my SoCal favs. I'm hoping to come here weekly and support these guys, because it's great! YUM! Wow. Fresh. Amazing. All good things to say about this restaurant concept in the Durham Food Hall. Fresh- I enjoyed reading the backstory of Ex-Voto and their commitment to quality ingredients and local sourcing when possible (hello Ashe County Cheese!!). Everything tasted fresh, from the chips and guac to the cilantro rice. Creative- My husband is a cult follower of taco bell and when he saw a Crunchwrap on the menu, he had to have it. We tried both chicken and chorizo and both were excellent. On Time- We ordered at lunchtime on a Sunday to go, as the food hall gets quite busy. It was ready right at the time predicted. Bonus points for the huge sign that pointed me to the pickup area Give this place a try! We loved Centro, and it was exciting to see this collaboration with Angela in Durham. This place is amazing and I am glad that part of El Centro (restaurant in Raleigh, NC) finally came to Durham. I placed an order as soon as they opened. I ordered a burrito and the melted and crunchy cheese outside of the burrito added so much more than I thought it would. I still need to try their breakfast items but really happy to have them here in Durham. Great location, right in Durham Food Hall! Parking can be tricky, but there is a lot of parking on the road. We ordered chorizo Crunchwraps and they were awesome! Like a TB Crunchwrap but 10x better with crispy fried cheese to seal it. Chorizo was flavored well. Took 15 min to prepare and they came out hot and fresh. We conveniently enjoyed them at the tables that were outside the food hall. read more

I ordered the chicken and plantain bowl and was extremely excited based on the delicious description and flavor combos advertised, but was disappointed as the bowl was 95% rice, beans, and salsa with a few pieces of chicken and even fewer plantains. Most of my bites were mushy between the tomatoes, rice and beans and those fillers detracted from any flavor the chicken and plantains might have added. Additionally they charge extra for their hot sauce; frustrating when a restaurant nickel and dimes you. Chipotle bowls are larger with more protein, less fillers, about half the price, and tastier. (The price would be worth it if you got a solid delicious portion, but it was lacking.) Also - they only offered chicken and chorizo on their menu as far as meats go when we went. read more

Probably our second favorite spot in the Durham Food Hall, only to Everything Bagels because we are huge bagel people. I am soooo happy they have a vegetarian option for the crunch wrap, and that is literally the only thing I've ordered in the 5+ times we've gotten food from here! We have only had great food from here, and i really appreciate that they keep your food under the heat-lamp because as they state on the online ordering, this is for sure best when fresh! The food is a little on the pricier side, but for sure worth it. The crunch wrap is huge, heavy and exploding with flavor and deliciousness! Sometimes we'll also order queso or guacamole to split and that also comes as a large container of yummy dip for the chips. We do usually physically and mentally plan to grab our crunch wraps from here because I do not want to try to sleep on a belly full of beans and cheese, and you really can't (maybe you can, i just tell myself I can't) save half of this meal for later! First, the Durham Food Hall just generally, is a great great addition to the neighborhood! We have been slowly trying all of the spots in there, and finally tried Ex Voto and one word for all of you--CRUNCHWRAP. Yes, you read that correctly. And yes, they also describe it as Taco Bell on steroids and that is completely accurate. I got their crunchwrap with chorizo and it is cooked and sealed with ashe county cheese on the outside, and my goodness gracious I have not felt so happy while eating for a while until I had my first bite of this glorious thing!! I literally did not want to share even one bite with my husband, but of course I did, since that's what you do for marriage. He offered me some his vegetarian burrito which was good, but lots of rice in it, and really was just nothing in comparison to this crunchwrap experience. I actually want to go back this weekend and get another one, since I have been thinking about it ever since! You order online and then it is set up by time for you to pop into the food hall (masks required of course) to pick it up--super easy. And you get a large portion of chips if you get the chips and salsa side, and their fire roasted salsa is great, I just wish you got a little more salsa since there were way more chips than salsa, so the ratio there could be better. But really, although the crunchwrap is $12, it is seriously one of the better things I've eaten in a while, so THANK YOU for moving into the neighborhood! read more

During Covid-time, lunch has become a meal of convenience. Get it, eat it, and move on.  If it's not fast and easy we can no longer be bothered.  Today was different. While thumbing through Instagram and sipping this morning's coffee, I took note of The Crunchy-Wrap SUPREMO. It's not ITB, which means it might as well be Tibet, but today I decided to take the plunge and a few hours later made the drive to Durham down the meandering nether-regions of I-40. I waited patiently @Durhamfoodhall while my Wrap was both Crunchied and SUPREMO-d. The architecture was enjoyable enough, and I even purchased a lovely chambray mask from @maskmakermaskmaker while I waited. @mdregs descended into the commons as if from Olympus itself, with a box full of goodies I didn't quite understand at the time. Knowing I had to return across the endless RTP desert and into the bowels of Raleigh, he delayed the cooking of our food until my arrival so as to ensure--and I quote--maximum 'crunch retention'. The whole drive home was a blur. I turned on my seat warmers underneath the Ex-Voto box because a commercial told me to. Thank Quetzalcoatl I did. After 30 grueling minutes, the box landed softly in my kitchen, still warm. The intricate paper wrapping was as mesmerizing as the SUPREMO aroma was intoxicating. The Ashe County Hoop Cheese hit first.  Like a cheezy waterfall into a pool of bliss it washed over everything that was wrong with my day until that moment. The crunch...it cronched.  The SUPREMO...it made me thankful that my grandfather survived World War II so that someday I might be born into the same universe as this wrap. The house-cured bacon and pickled jalapenos danced like drunken teenagers on a tidal wave of chipotle crema. Each bite made me want to thank my parents for their sacrifices. If I had reasonable expectations about what a weekday lunch could accomplish, they are now dead. When all that remained was the final bite, I wept like a child. I traveled 42 miles round-trip, but would have gladly traveled to the moon and back for the mere CHANCE at recreating the exhilaration I experienced today. From now on my life will be divided into two chapters: everything after the Crunchy-Wrap SUPREMO, and the bitter emptiness before.  I will not drive all the way to Durham for a meeting or to visit family, but you can bet your sweet tooshy I'll do it for another dining experience @exvototaco. read more

I tried the chicken crunchwrap and the veggie crunchwrap. Both were overpriced, bland, and had a poor distribution of ingredients. What annoyed me more was that I only ordered the veggie crunchwrap, since I don't eat meat. I was given the chicken crunchwrap in a wrapper marked as a vegetarian crunchwrap. Mistakes happen and that's ok, but customer service was also very lackluster. While this doesn't happen very often, most places would refund the item when making a mistake as big as giving a chicken crunchwrap in a bag marked veggie to a vegetarian, which they did not. Even a small gesture of throwing in some chips as an apology would have made me feel better about it. Instead, all I got as a stomach at later because I ate half the first crunchwrap without noticing because their chicken wasn't very flavorful and didn't stand out. So tip to both meat eaters and vegetarians, you can do better than this place. I definitely won't be coming back. read more

The best tacos I've had to date! The shishito tacos are amazing and I can't wait until their brick and mortar opens soon. I've been following these guys on social media to try and get to each of their pre-opening pop up events. I can't get enough of the tacos and tamales. Let me preface, I live everyday like it's taco Tuesday. I'm pretty much taco cleansing this new year. That being said, Ex-Voto is nacho average taco place. I sunk my teeth into these bad boys at one of their pre-opening pop ups, and DAMN. The tortillas, god sent them. I'm all in. Shrimp tacos were worth taco'in about. And the tamale was insane...and then they put some gravy deliciousness on top. When they make a dessert (my favorite course), I'll update with more.
