A bit late on my review since I came here for Mother's Day lunch, but nonetheless, I wanted to review because the food was delicious. I started with a mango fruity drink. It had a name written on a board outside, and I wish I could remember because I would order it again. Then I tried the Pulpo Al Pastor Taco (they had me at octopus). It came with 2 tacos and a side of maduros aka yellow fried plantains. It did catch me by surprise when the maduros came with a crema on top. I've never had it like that and to my surprise it was good. Also, the Quesadilla Fajita which comes with a side of yellow rice. Food was sooo good. It was very busy this day but service was phenomenal. There's an indoor seating area with a bar but we sat outdoors and enjoyed the beautiful day. Definitely will be back. read more

Excellent Oaxacan food! Starting off with the chips and salsa, it was very fresh and the chips were nice and crispy. I had the tlayuda, which initially was a bit too hard to eat, but when I reheated it, it softened the tortilla and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Also got the less traditional Crunchwrap with chicken, and that was superb. I picked up my food to-go, so I can't speak much to the ambiance. However, with regard to the service, they began making the food when we came to pick it up (when it should have been ready 25 min earlier). At least it was fresh? But it sucked to have to wait 20 more minutes to be ready when we had ordered it to go. Docking a star for the wait time for a pick up order, but maybe I would feel differently had I eaten there in person. read more

I was excited to try Xolos as it's been doing a solid business since opening. I ordered the chicken crunch wrap. This was crispy on the outside and on one side there was cheese that was nice and crisp. This was flavorful and the queso mixed with the chicken was delish. I had a side of black beans and Spanish rice which had a kick but I liked it. The guacamole with chips was very good. Enjoyed the meal and will be back to try other items. The place is really nicely decorated and it's easy to find and there's plenty of parking in the area. They have outdoor seating as well which many people were enjoying. read more

Went for dinner with friends. Great food, gluten free options, and a nice outdoor area. The place was clean and bright and busy. Not too busy, it's in a mini strip mall area with shops and restaurants with condos and apartments on the outskirts. The service needs help. Slow, inattentive, and grumpy. First time at Xolos last week. It's always fun to find a New Mexican restaurant with something out of the ordinary (the tlayudas were new to us). Nice fresh bowl of chips and salsa were brought out immediately, and we didn't have to wait long to order. We tried the small tlayudas and a taco plate. The small was plenty for one - we didn't see any of the regular tlayudas, but those must be huge if they are for three. The Mexican/Star Wars decor was interesting, as was the general vibe of the place. Plenty of patio seating out front, but being Southern Village there is quite a slope out there. The staff was attentive, but it felt like we were being hustled out even though there were multiple tables open when we were there. read more

There's a dearth of really good Mexican food here. Finally tried Xolos and wasn't disappointed. Quite a choice of tacos, so stuck with the basic street tacos and they nailed it; carne asada, onion and cilantro, husband had the chile relleno with chicken and refried black beans, a little different than he's had before. Menu features Oaxacan dishes, plus interesting cocktails. Not sure what's going on with the murals, but slightly funky interior and bar make it a winner. read more

I came to a meetup and the host was at the bar. We chatted for a while, and the bartender brought him chips & salsa, but never brought any for me. I asked if he could bring some salsa for me and he kinda liked at me funny. It never arrived. (I was sharing the chips (post covid, no one wants to share dipping bowls, and I don't really want to either, but they never brought any extra, even after I asked) We decided to eat there and ordered. A few minutes later, another person showed up, but since we were already there and had ordered (plus it was raining so the patio was closed) we decided not to move to a table. After the orders had been in for 15-20 minutes or so, the bartender told my friend that their food had run out. They made a different choice, and we continued to talk. The other person ordered food. Soon, my friends replacement meal came. I still didn't have anything but water and the drink I had ordered. Then a runner brought out food, and he looked at me and said "your tacos were all the way, right? These are plain, but I'll bring you come pico. He sat down the most pitiful plate of food I have ever been served in my entire life. A bowl of beans (which was the side I ordered) and two pink soft corn tortillas with two shrimp each and four little dabs of a guacamole reduction sauce piped on. It was ridiculous. Everyone I have shown the picture to gawks at it and says "You're kidding, right?" They did bring a small dish of pico de gallo, but there was no lettuce, slaw, tomatoes, cheese - nothing but these dry tortillas and those poor lonely shrimp. Meanwhile, my friend's replacement meal was a bowl of Arroz con polo that he couldn't finish, and the guy on the other side of my other friend had a burrito the size of my forearm. Neither of my friends could finish their food. I had to stop on the way home for food. Each time a runner came out, it seemed no one knew where to take orders, so I'm sure some poor diner was expecting this plate of nothing, but were served my tacos full of the things promised on the menu. Me, I'd have been embarrassed to hand this plate to a guest, even if they ordered it this way. Had I not been with a group that I didn't know well, and it not been a Friday night with crowds coming in to dodge the rain, I'd have asked the manager if this is the kind of meal they want to be known for. It's a new place, in Southern Village, and every time I go to places here, I keep telling myself it's all show and no substance. This place finally proved it in spades. read more

I hate to do it, but I can't give a better rating to Xolos. The atmosphere and service were good; no complaints there. The food and drink left so much to be desired I just can't give a better rating. We got a couple drinks; cheap prices, but that was matched with the flavor of them unfortunately. For food, we got the Tlayuda. I'm pretty sure it actually had no seasoning on it at all. The meat, cheese, sauce, and veggies actually had no flavor, we were a bit confused. The chips also had no salt and the salsa was not very good. We did enjoy the queso. I'm a bit surprised by the good reviews, maybe we just had a bad experience. read more

I had the salmon taco and what I thought was a side salad. It was gigantor! I loved the pear dressing! Husband had chicken and steak tacos. All tacos were tasty. The salmon mango has a kick! Best chips and salsa I've had in a long time. Love the Mexican decor, it is cute and colorful. Few TV's for sports fan. Our waitress was attentive and fast. That margarita was strong. Xolos offers an interesting alternative to your typical Tex-Mex fare. Many dishes on the menu are of Oaxacan origin, with a decent take on Mole sauce. There is also a page of standard Tex-Mex dishes if that's what you're looking for. The food was well prepared, if a little uninspiring. Xolos would make a good choice for "we don't feel like cooking" nights, and not for an event like birthdays or anniversaries. read more

This place is amazing, and just what we needed in Southern Village. The chips and salsa are the best I've had in the triangle. The queso is a perfect combination of spicy and liquidity but sticks to the chip. The mahi mahi, chicken, and al pastor tacos were all stellar. The kids meal is perfect and they provide very nice kids supplies to play with. The decor and music is great, and it looks like the outdoor space will be great in warmer weather. I took my grandkids and daughter in law out to eat on Sunday in Chapel Hill. It's very difficult to find somewhere that everyone agrees on. I have to consider foods preferences which include one vegetarian and one very picky eater. We chose Xolos in Governor's Square for our lunchtime meal. I was so impressed. The food was wonderful with plenty of selections for everyone. We sat on the patio, enjoyed the music and the atmosphere was perfect. The potions were larger than expected and cooked perfectly. Everything tasted fresh and was seasoned perfectly. The staff were friendly and service excellent. Xolos is definitely going to be one of our go to places from now on. read more

Came in late by myself and there was only one table with people. Sat at the bar and ordered dinner and beer. Food was average-- not bad, just lacking a spice. The worst part was they served my beer in a broken glass, which I didn't notice until it cut my lip. I told the bartender who just said, whoops--and gave me a new beer (in a glass with clear streaks). Not a great impression.
