    The bar - April 2026

What a fun restaurant, I loved all their decor and art work. You order and pay at the counter and the food will be brought to your table when ready. I got the Asada Nachos and I loved the presentation! They come in a tall metal cylinder that you get to lift to reveal the nachos, it was really fun. The nachos were tasty, I enjoyed all the topping and loved the kick from the fresh jalapeños. The portion was HUGE. I brought home my leftovers, and even the leftovers were good (which is rare for nachos). They have a salsa bar with 4 different salsas, my favorite was the spicy orange peanut salsa. They ran out of their house green salsa which is made at the Hillsborough Street location, so I only got to try a little of this salsa. We didn't get any alcoholic drinks, but the bartender let us know that this Gym Tacos stays open late on Fridays and turns into a club!

Amazing tacos, lots of terrific sauces and great staff 10/10 The place is great for a quick lunch or to sit and hangout while having a beer.

The tacos were delicious! You order by the taco at the counter and they bring your food to your table. I tried the asada, carnitas, and al pastor tacos. They were all very flavorful and tender and came on corn tortillas. Reasonable prices for what you get. The tacos were a bit dry by themselves; however, I realized that they have a self-serve station with a variety of different sauces of different heat levels which were perfect for completing the flavor profile and allowed you to customize to your taste too. Staff were very welcoming and the spaces were clean. They have plentiful indoor seating and a smaller outdoor space as well. No dedicated parking so look for street parking or nearby lots.

2 things: 1. When I'm really hungry and the food looks amazing... I always forget I'm a Yelper. 2. Not sure if this is saying much, but I thought my really really good Mexican food and Taco tuesdays were done when I moved from Houston to Durham.... However, today I have discovered Gym's Tacos and renamed it Dias Tacos ( like u know who- JK JK , no history lessons under the current... never mind) Anyway, this place is super good, super quick, super made w love or a culinary degree. But I want more more more! I have like zero friends since I just moved here, but I will make some come here w me and they will love me for it!

Gym taco (shrimp), Al pastor, and I forget the third one - maybe campechano?

Pros: The tacos are generously filled and delicious. The gym taco was my favorite, with plump, juicy, sweet shrimp. I could happily eat those every day. Cons: It's on the pricier side for a taco joint. You get one instead of the traditional two corn tortillas per taco, and unlike at some other local places, the chips cost extra. The drink machine was broken when I was visiting, and I didn't see any way to get free water. There's a salsa bar, but the set up is awkward because they keep the salsa cups at the register, so if you don't know or forget to ask when you're ordering, you have to either get back in line or awkwardly hover.

We walked in and were greeted with the smell of Fabuloso. I know some folks love that smell, and it means clean to them, but it tends to give me a headache. Just a warning. It kind of seems like they're not quite up and running yet. The sign outside seems very temporary, there's a roll of paper towels at the counter, and the water jug is very flimsy. We started by ordering the nachos, and some tacos (for 2 people). Then another employee came over and said "that's a LOT of food," which prompted the guy we'd been ordering with to tell us the nachos can feed 2-3 people. We cancelled the nachos and added a steak burrito, and some chips and queso. The chips and queso were delicious- the queso wasn't too thick, and the flavor was delicious. My husband liked the tacos a lot. The burrito was nothing special, I was disappointed- I should have tried the tacos. I am confused if this place is trying to be a culinary journey kind of taco shop with specialty meats and minimal descriptions, or if it's trying to be a glossy chain. It seems to be missing the mark on both for me. More descriptions on the menu would have been really helpful. If they're trying to be a glossy Instagram-worthy chain with locations all around the Triangle they should really have a couple vegetarian options. I found ALL the salsas to be really spicy except the avocado one. I acknowledge I have gringa taste buds, so take this with a grain of salt, but I wanted to mention. I didn't care for the atmosphere, with several different TVs playing. The staff wasn't particularly friendly either- we saw the guy who said "that's a lot of food" on our way out, and I would have expected a smile or a "have a nice day" but he didn't even look at us as we exited. Probably won't be back.

Grabbed some tacos on Saturday. They were tasty but the service was a lil hit or miss. Originally I ordered the lengua tacos but I was informed they weren't available after checking out and the suggested replacement didn't match the price of lengua taco (less expensive). Trying to explain the price difference to the cashier was frustrating as there was no accommodation for the inconvenience. I would give them another try due to tacos being tasty.

I've seen so many social media posts about "trash can nachos" and really wanted to check it out, so I found Gym Tacos. I went during the day so it was nice and quiet. The restaurant is open and spacious, and the staff were friendly. There were just two of us, and we couldn't even finish it, but it was such a fun and unique experience. Definitely worth trying if you're in the mood for a lot of food.

Service was friendly & relatively fast. Wasn't a huge fan of the quesadilla, it was very chewy...But I liked it enough to eat it. They have guava jarritos, which are my fave and apparently hard to find in restaurants. Space was massive.

Yum! This place was really really excellent, everything was SUPER fresh and yummy. I got two chicken street tacos, and the flavors were incredible. The homemade tortillas added an excellent flavor! We also got chips and salsa. I tried the two green salsas (one tasted like tomatillo and the over maybe a creamy avocado salsa) and both were absolutely delicious! Really really enjoyed them, especially the creamier one. There was also a really interesting orange peanut salsa, that was really unique and so good! Loved it! We would love to be back! Really wonderful spot!

Stopped by for a quick lunch break. I got two tacos (pastor and carnitas). Both were good but if I went again I would probably stick with the pastor as I felt it was more flavorful. I also got chips and queso. The chips were pretty standard and room temp. For some reason I had gotten used to warm chips haha. The queso was great though. I thought it was fairly pricey for chips and queso but I'd say it's meant for sharing between 2-3 people. Lastly, I grabbed an horchata which perfectly topped off the meal.

My wife wanted to head out on Cinco de Mayo but I thought a lot of Mexican restaurants would be too packed. I remembered this location of Gym Tacos and thought it wouldn't be too packed -- I was right. You order at the counter and they bring the food out to you. We ordered a tostada with a side of beans, and two tacos with a side of rice. The food was tasty and filling but not too much for one meal. The atmosphere is very casual and funky.

What a gem of a restaurant that my family and I were able to visit. We were looking for something good to grab on a Saturday evening and Yelp recommended this place to us. Parking may be tricky in downtown Durham, especially on a nice day, but we had no problem finding parking around 4:45-ish. This is a taco joint where you'll order your food at the counter, find your table, and they'll call you when the order is ready. The gentleman working the counter was very pleasant and patient! My family and I have struggled to find tacos similar to the ones that we find on the west coast but these made our hearts happy. Everything is made to order so you may have a slight weight. I ordered four tacos and they were all excellent. I had one Pastor, one Chorizo, one Carne Asada and one Carnitas taco. The sauces are self serve (one of their hottest sauces is labeled to warn that it contains peanuts). I only remember the peanut sauce having a good spice level, if you're spice adverse, do not get that one. My little had the chicken tenders with fries and ranch and loved his dish. Horchata, great. Food, excellent. They have Mexican Coca-Cola, get one. I'll definitely be returning to try those nachos!

Portions are quite large. We usually split either a burrito or quesadilla. The chicken is delish. Super friendly service.

Where I am from you can get a shredded beef burrito anywhere but they are hard to find here. We walked in and I was surprised to see that you order at the counter and it seems most of their business is takeout. They did allow us to sit at a table to order though. The waiter did not bring us anything. No chips. No salsa. No napkins. No silverware. I asked if they have salsa and they then brought out chips and salsa. I asked for silverware and napkins after our food arrived and they then brought out those things. We ordered bean dip and they brought out what I would describe as a bowl of water. Both the beans and the cheese were so runny that it was impossible to get either beans or cheese to stay on the chip long enough to deliver to your mouth. Total fail. How can bean dip be messed up? I was still excited for my shredded beef burrito to come. That excitement and any hopes I had for this place went way out the window when the man came back and plopped a shredded chicken burrito down in front of me. Definitely not what I ordered! I literally went there because they have shredded beef burritos, as least their menu says they do. I ate some of the shredded chicken burrito that I did not order and simply quietly boxed up the rest feeling too defeated to eat or complain. Speaking of the menu, they charged significantly more for every single item than the price that was listed on the menu. Once again I did not complain. I was so ready to leave. The horrible bean dip, three tacos for my husband, and a burrito that I did not order cost us $60. Never again.

The young workers behind the register were very friendly, helpful about what was good and gave great menu item descriptions. They also kept forgetting items from our order but were quick to get it for us. Note the workers taking the order behind the counter are also the ones bringing the food out. Food was amazing! I have the 3 birria tacos (1 chicken 2 beef- though I ordered it flipped but appreciated the error as the beef were better tasting) and rice with beans. Loved that I got the birria sauce on the side in a Togo cup as I definitely took the leftovers home. There are self serve salsas, lime, cucumber and radishes you can get.
