I once had a foodie boyfriend who fed me some of the world's finest food, wines, etc. Some 95% of the food he bought me required utensils, getting out of your pj's and into something nicer, and pretty-ing yourself up before you get to the restaurant.
But never, ever did he make me grub like he did on the day he dropped by here to get me some good ol' meat. This is GRUB w/ a capital "G".
Now I am not a big fan of "BBQ SAUCE".
It's sweet (strike 1) and tangy (strike 2) and always overpowers and masks the meat's natural flavor (strike 3). You drown my meat in this stuff and I am sending it back. If I wanted sauce with some meat, I'd have ordered "sauce with meat" not MEAT. I might take a dip, so it is always, ALWAYS on the side. If I can't get it on the side, I will order something else. Don't disgrace good meat w/ sauce. He knows this, so obliged me in ordering it this way while I waited in the car.
Two orders:
1. Beef Brisket
2. Pork Ribs
By the look on his face and the words that followed - - he'd never seen me (or perhaps any chic on the planet) get down and dirty with food like I did that day.
In my defense - - I was really hungry. REALLY. Furthermore, he was driving and I was in the passenger seat, so it required I work for both of us to get both of us fed. A plastic fork is not really conducive to getting this task accomplished cleanly, it's a far reach from where I'm sitting to this mouth and there's this AMAZING BBQ sauce that I had to dip in prior to the meat parts reaching their final destination, so clean hands, speed, and absolute dexterity was required.
"One for you," I would say, as I took a big piece of brisket, drenched it in this amazing sauce, and shoved it in his mouth w/ my fingers. Not a single drop in the car. Good.
"One for me," i would say, as I shoveled 7 pieces in my mouth.
"One for you," as I once again take a piece of meat and deliver it, with a ripped off piece of wheat bread they include in your order, all drenched in BBQ sauce.
For the pork, I just drizzled sauce on it and handed it to him. Drip at will, buddy. I was done feeding him - - I had my own mouth to deal with when it came to these delicious ribs!
For the ribs -- 5 stars. Heck, 20 stars. PERFECT.
For the brisket - - - um, 3 stars, I've had better, but holy crap, that sauce just brought it to LIFE. Could have been juicier though...........
So why the 3 star rating?
There is some rhyme and reason behind my ratings, you know.
WAY overpriced. We had two meat orders and a drink. I think it was $25 or something? Now, for a lot of meat, I'd pay any price but it's not like we were stuffed afterwards whereas $20 + at a good burger joint and we'd be stuffed silly. We went to dinner soon thereafter -- so this is one hellluva expensive SNACK!! I'd want double the amount of meat they gave us for each order to justify the price from such a shabby joint.
Also - - there is a tiny scoop of potato salad offered in each order. Too small! For a $10+ order, be a little more generous with the taters, eh?
After all was said and done, it occurred to me that I had just gotten down and chowed with my bare hands.... not so ladylike, not graceful at all..... as I did my best to take off the sauce with the napkins.
I turned and asked the boyfriend, "Have you ever seen me eat with my hands like this?"
His reply: "No.... I just love how you can be soooo ghetto sometimes!!" read more
