    Cute Spot!
    Nessa R.

I grew up in the Arlington, Va so my realtor insisted I check out houses/investment properties in the Alexandria, Va Del Rey neighborhood. I've been to this area hundreds of times but never really walked the neighborhood. One of my favorite breakfast spots is near so I was shocked that just a walk down the block would have me in such a quaint area. Who knew! There were college football games that I didn't want to miss watching so I came to Evening Star to look for their bar area and was super excited when they said they had a outside area with a bar called the "Backyard". This place is HUGE! The area is so cute, it has cabanas and is set up nicely! I was impressed! There was only one T.V. but it did the job! Bartenders were super attentive and friendly. I only had their slushy drinks and didn't try their food but that is now on my MUST do list! Evening Star is one of those places you need to come visit a few times to check out their multifaceted restaurant! This place is a GEM! Five stars because nothing was amiss!

My friends and I had brunch here today because we wanted a place equidistant from all of us and Del Ray it was! We had an 11am reservation - we showed up a bit early and were immediately seated. Overall, the food, service and ambiance were good. I wouldn't go out of my way to come back (I live in DC so not terribly close) but it hit the spot for a low key brunch.

There is 2 hour street parking for the restaurant during the day then free at night. The restaurant was really dark in the booths but nicely lit in the main areas. It was hard to read the menu since it was so dark. The booths were hard to sit in for a long period of time since there was no cushion and just straight wood. The servers were all very nice and attentive! The food was absolutely delicious. I loved the new 3 cheese ravioli that they recently added. The red velvet cheese cake was very rich. Also had a cup of coffee which was yummy with cream and sugar. I'd definitely come here again and would recommend it.

In the heart of Mt Vernon we stopped by for brunch loved the decor and the service and the food was amazing. We ordered the avocado toast it was delicious. Its a small place that has a small town vibe. Definitely will be back soon.

I stopped in with a friend for an impromptu brunch and loved the relaxed southwest styled charm of this place. There's both indoor and outdoor seating, and the outdoor seating is split into two areas. We sat in the more shady patio area which offered a more temperate nook off the Main Street. I was really happy with the smoked pork hash that was on their brunch menu. It was plentiful and flavorful with a tangy barbecue. Service was prompt and helpful. Great brunch destination.

We came here for restaurant week and left pretty underwhelmed. The menu for restaurant week came with many options, but we felt all six dishes we tried were--fine. The restaurant was understaffed, massively, but even with them being understaffed we felt the service deserved more than three stars. The food is what earned the three stars here. We tried the wings, Brussel sprouts, salmon, pork chop, flourless chocolate cake, and the carrot cake. The wings and carrot cake were really good but the rest again, was just fine. The pork chop came with peaches and a sauce that was overly sweet, the salmon was way overcooked and salty, and the Brussel sprouts were overcooked. We wouldn't go as far as saying anything was bad, it just wasn't super remarkable for such a cute restaurant in our favorite neighborhood in Alexandria. We have been here for brunch, so we expected more. Would skip for restaurant week next time.

I made a reservation for Monday at 530, but honestly I didn't need a reservation and it didn't get packed until around 7. There is only street parking so be ready to find a spot. We were sat quickly and taken care of immediately. We were deciding on drinks and the owner/general manager brought us a taste to solidify our order. The beet & Brussels were so yummy! When we ordered our second glass of wine, it took quite a while to receive it and without asking it was taken off our bill. I ordered the tuna steak, and while it was delicious, I should've ordered the crab chili pasta! My friend got the scallops and said they were beyond. We finished up with the silk pie that was perfectly sweet and so light. I would definitely go again.

Love the new brunch menu. The smoked pork with poached eggs and salad verde was perfection! The side of HatchChili grits went well with it. Service was fast and friendly as usual, as we always sit at the bar. The ambiance remains consistently neighborly and we enjoy it every time we come. Also ate the brisket, eggs, and cheese.

Where to begin. When we got there it was empty inside. When we left it was filling up. This place is very nice inside and the lighting makes it a romantic place. We had the Chicken Tenders which was delicious! I would order again. The honey mustard sauce was to die for. The Duck pot pie was also delicious. The pot pie could use a veggie or something in addition to the pie. We washed it all down with wine and beer. Both were delicious and no complaints. If you are in the area. Evening Star Cafe is a solid choice for dinner. Prices are a bit high but you get what you pay for and the food is delicious!! I will be back to try further meals!

This place was an unexpected surprise, we saw this place a couple of times before actually going inside. Super cute diner vibes, hostess was super friendly and I feel like we picked a great time to come. It wasn't too packed for Sunday breakfast. Food was well plated ( which I observe everywhere), and the portions felt well balanced as well. Their menu was simple and I loved that. Loved the layout and the overall feel of the place. I will definitely be back to visit the backside of the restaurant which apparently is a bar!

Came in on a Saturday afternoon with a party of 4 - we didn't have a reservation and had about a 30-minute wait, so we walked around the stores while we waited. For gluten free folk - although the menu is not marked, the manager took my menu, consulted with the chef, and they marked up which items I could and could not have. Super kind! My party enjoyed the ambiance of the cafe (very cute and quaint), the service, and the quality/portion sizes of our food. We would definitely return!

Had a reservation and was seated on time. You can find street parking but it can be crowded. Waiters was very attentive and quick. I would say the timing of the appetizer and main course was way off. They both came out almost back to back. Not sure what happened there. Aside from that the food was very good. It was small onsides and a few seats outside. It can be very loud. There's also a bar in the back and their sister restaurant to the side. Overall I enjoyed my experience and would come back

The arancini was the best part of the meal for me. The risotto was great, it had short rib in it, and the aioli complemented it well. I didn't like the chicken and waffles. The chicken was good, but the aioli and hot sauce were drizzled over everything, and it didn't taste good on a sweet-tasting waffle. There was no butter or syrup with it, so I'm not sure if the hot sauce was meant to be the topping for the waffle too, but it wasn't great. The few bites I had of just waffle tasted really good. It has the potential to be a great dish, but it just missed the mark for me. I'd consider going back for dinner one day, but especially for the price, I wasn't terribly impressed.

He truly radiates light and joy, setting the tone for the entire evening. Our server, Alison, was an absolute gem--attentive, personable, and on top of everything. The food was outstanding. We ordered the ribeye, New York steak, and filet mignon, all cooked to perfection. The Oysters Rockefeller were superb! I had asked for my daughter's meal to come out as soon as possible, and they made it happen without hesitation, which we really appreciated. For sides, we had the Brussels sprouts--perfectly balanced, sweet but not overly so--and the creamed corn, which was absolutely on point. We didn't end up ordering dessert, but the options looked amazing and tempting! Todd came by our table to check in, which added such a personal touch. The ambiance was lovely, and as we were leaving, Todd walked us outside and spent a few moments chatting with us--it truly meant a lot. I don't eat beef or pork, but after watching a review from Peaks100, I saw that the manager also recommended the seafood along with the steaks. My wife eats steak, so I took her there for that, and I planned to order seafood. Spoiler alert: my wife enjoyed her steak. Now that I got that out of the way, let me continue. https://youtu.be/5uPuX7Fk_cE?si=H7NI2vI_uMWAeREq Appetizer Octopus Ceviche -- $18 I told our server that I didn't want any pork on it. She seemed surprised and told me it didn't come with pork. I had already looked up "pancetta crumble" and knew pancetta was pork, so I showed her the menu. She then said she knew what pancetta was and would make sure there was no pork on my plate. The ceviche itself didn't have much flavor. I didn't really enjoy it, but it wasn't bad enough for me to complain or send it back. Dinner Housemade "Parkerhouse" Rolls -- $8 These came out fresh and hot with butter. They were good. No complaints. Chef's Fresh Catch -- $50 The fresh catch was grouper. The fish had some salt on it and a nice char, but the heavy cream-based sauce on the plate didn't have much flavor. Again, I didn't really enjoy it, but not enough to complain or return the dish. Jumbo Lump Crab Oscar -- $28 Wow, this was not good at all. I probably should have sent it back, but I didn't. It was tough and rubbery (see pic), almost like it had been left under the broiler too long. I took it home with me, but I honestly will probably end up throwing it away. Sides Crispy Brussels Sprouts -- $13 These were good, but somewhat oily. Yukon Gold Potato Purée -- $12 They were okay. Nothing to write home about. Dessert Coconut Cream Bread Pudding -- $14 It was just okay. The coconut flakes was too much, in my opinion, and eventually became overwhelming. It didn't feel very balanced. Overall, I felt the service could have been better, and most of the food needed more flavor, especially at this price point. Nothing was so terrible that I felt the need to ask for a manager, but I also didn't enjoy most of what I ordered. I ordered it, so I paid for it and kept it moving. Also, a 25% gratuity was already added to the bill. Maybe that is why the service was lacking, because they already knew they were going to get 25% "allegedly". Honestly, I don't think I'll be back. There are too many other good places in the DMV where you can have better food and a better overall experience for the same price or less.

When I asked about the discrepancy, I was told the systems sometimes differ by a few cents. The adjustment was made when I requested to pay the correct total, but the response suggested that questioning "only two cents" was unreasonable. My concern was never the amount; it was the principle. When a customer is shown one accurate total and then asked to authorize a higher one without explanation, it creates the appearance of taking money that was not part of the stated charge. If I may add my two cents as a former patron and frequent restaurant guest: trust matters in a dining experience. Even a few unexplained pennies raise a reasonable question--if this occurs repeatedly throughout the day, where do those extra cents go? A couple of cents from one guest, a few more from another, eventually add up. Transparency in billing prevents that concern. When a discrepancy is presented without a clear explanation and a patron is made to feel foolish for asking about it, it leaves a bad taste, regardless of how enjoyable the meal may have been.
