Edit: Eugene airport has TSA Pre-Check now!! Worth an extra star, and rare for such a small airport. Less than 5 minutes from car to gate now for me, even when it's very busy. Sweet!
As far as airports go, EUG is pretty decent. The airport is small, which means that you could make it from car to gate in about 3 minutes on a quiet day. The downside of its size is that, when they ARE busy (especially around 6-8am when they have multiple flights going out) it can take you as much as 45 minutes of just waiting for security. They only have two machines and seem to make little effort to speed up the process.
Your entertainment and dining options are very limited at EUG. There's a small cafe that rarely seems to be open, as well as an okay restaurant outside security. Past security there's nothing but some vending machines, a gift shop with candy bars and such, and a small cafe where the food is always stale and the price are over-the-top expensive. Pack some food before you go if you didn't have time for breakfast because you're probably not going to like the cafe.
Other than that there's a small chair-massage set up past security, through a local salon. I haven't tried them, but personally I would feel uncomfortable getting a chair massage right there at the end of a long hallway with people staring at you the entire way. There's also an art gallery of sorts that you can check out, but usually the art is terrible. To each his own though, check it out, perhaps you'll like it. I stopped ignoring its existence after the first two times I flew EUG.
The biggest problem I have with EUG is one that, in a way, I can't blame on them: Luggage seems to get lost on the way to EUG more often than to ANY other place. Based on my 'sampling' of about 50 flights, the number of losses seems to vastly exceed national average (which is 1 in 150). Of course it's a different airport that loses the luggage, but something in the system results in this happening strangely often in Eugene. I've probably flown EUG around 50 times, and lost my bag about 6-8 times. That's a pretty high loss rate! I've flown PDX about the same amount of times, little more maybe, and other airports like AMS over 100 times. Neither of those have ever resulted in the loss of a bag. In fact, I fly about 15-20 times a year, and have never lost a bag anywhere other than Eugene, despite Eugene not being my most frequent airport. A number of my friends have remarked the same, and when I do have a lost bag, I usually find myself running to the counter with 5-15 other people also coming to file a claim. That's a LOT of lost bags for the small planes that fly EUG. No idea what the cause for this could be, but it's incredibly inconvenient.
So overall, it's a decent airport, it has what you need, and on quiet days it's incredibly fast, even if you have to go into long term parking which is right at the terminal. There's even free WIFI, and that counts for a lot in my book. EUG could definitely use some improvements though, starting with their cafe. read more
