I have had the pleasure, privilege, and darned good luck to enjoy delicious food all over the world. While celebrating my lovely wife's birthday during our first-year trip to Barcelona, we shared one of our most impressive, imaginative, amazing meals ever at Etapes. We spent some three hours oohing, ahhing, and exclaiming over everything, from the foie gras/smoked eel appetizer through the multiple courses of the "gourmand" tasting menu. The menu changes seasonally, but whatever's on it when you go, you will not be disappointed. Or bored. (Especially if you request a pitcher of the house cava sangria to accompany your meal.) The service, the venue, and the unexpectedly delightful company of the other diners we met all enhanced the experience. (As did dining outdoors, where we also met some of Barcelona's cutest dogs, and their companion humans.) But we likely would have been equally wowed if we'd been forced to eat in a dark, distant corner of the restaurant. If it had any, that is. Etapes was our one reserved Michelin starred restaurant prior to landing in Barcelona. As it turned out, it was a 2 minute walk from our flat. We had a wonderful host and sommelier who made a wonderful regional white wine suggestion. The restaurant is sleek and modern with simple elegance. Starters Marinated octopus, with watercress salad, lettuce and three tomatoes Tuna tataki, tomato tartare, avocado, wasabi mayonnaise and soy. Scallops & Iberian Pork belly confit, with oyster sauce and ham. Duck ravioli, foie cream and orange. Entrees Lobster, on linguini ink with white truffle. Etapes was the best meal I had in Barcelona by far! My boyfriend and I came here for my birthday dinner during our last night in Barcelona. First of all, they were incredibly accommodating when day of we had to push our reservation to later in the night because our plans for the day had changed. Then we actually arrived at the restaurant much earlier than anticipated but they happily seated us right away with no problems. First - the ambience. Etapes was like a sanctuary from all the craziness outside, especially after you've been sightseeing with tourists at Sagrada Familia all day. Food - Etapes has a regular menu as well as a tasting menu. We decided to order off of the regular menu and share everything. The highlight of the night were the SCALLOPS with pork belly and iberian ham. Do not miss this!! This was my favorite dish and I don't even like ham. We also had the tomato bread, salmon with caviar and seaweed spaghetti, and rice with lobster and trumpets of death (really that's the name). I wanted to try the duck ravioli as well but this was already enough food :( Tomato bread that is served as a starter is good but don't fill up Salmon w/ caviar: seared salmon w caviar and just the right amount of saltiness from the seaweed "spaghetti." Very good Lobster rice w/ trumpets of death: fancy paella. The lobster pieces were generous and the rice was amazing. After some googling I now see that the trumpets of death are a wild fungi mushroom. Dessert: the chocolate dessert. It's a combination of chocolate in all the various forms and textures you can think of (cake, mousse, etc). If you are a chocolate lover, this is a must. We also had a bottle of wine from their huge selection of wines which was very good. Overall I am sooo happy we came here for our last dinner. I was a little concerned because of some of the more recent reviews, but Etapes was excellent. The quality of the food, the presentation, the service, bar none. I never reveal my 6 star review joints but I will make an exception here, sorry, so sorry Barcelona Yelpers. Etapes is 6 star food at practically bargain prices. The food is stellar without a doubt. The servers really care a lot about your total experience. With all of this I never even noticed the ambience. FYI, it is casual and comfortable not over the top like the food. Chef's tasting with wine pairing as good as it gets, could have paid twice as much in Paris. Each course preceded with its own wine pairing described with utmost detail of why it was chosen and what was special about it. Some were cellared up to 14 years. Each course built upon the next until you almost cry uncle and then the chocolate massive dessert finishes you off. Don't go here, don't tell anyone. perhaps my favorite dining experience on my one week european holiday. i walked in on a sunday night without a reservation, but they were gracious enough to seat me without a long wait. i recommend making a reservation to assure yourself a seat. initially, I had gone just to get some paella and wine but when I saw the chefs menu, I knew I had to take the dive. my only hesitance was that the paella was not on the tasting menu, but they were kind enough to sub out the suckling pig making the decision easy. i truly enjoyed the prawn, tuna tataki, duck ravioli, and lobster linguini. the chef created dishes that were delicate, subtle, and perhaps even genius. these courses outshined even the paella i was so looking forward to. the wines they recommended were perfect, which they introduced by region and what made the wine special. I didn't elect the wine pairing, but they steered me into the right glasses of wine for my meal. now I've always been a red wine guy, but Barcelona/Catalonia really opened me up to a whole new world of white wines. so reasonable in price, delicious, and airy. service was stellar and the wait staff knew the menu and wines inside out. they weren't pushy at all and possessed a soft hospitality that would put any diner at ease. communicating in english is no problem here. as other reviewers say, this restaurant is michelin star worthy so go and enjoy the extraordinary food and service. read more

We were allured by the cheap lunch menu and the great reviews! Reservations were fairly easy to book online. Unfortunately, I felt the meal fell flat. There were a choice of 2 options for each course. For the first course we both decided to order the potato and oysters. I didn't realize it was a soup, which was fine, but I found the soup to be on the gummy side and bland. The complimentary tomato bread was delicious! For my entree I ordered the fish of the day which was cooked well. A simple dish, but no complaints. BF ordered the cannelloni which is filled with beef & pork topped with a truffle béchamel sauce. He loves all of the above so he was excited for his dish. But he was disappointed and said the dish was too greasy. For dessert I ordered the brownie which was light! And we also ordered a traditional catalan cheese and honey dessert which we enjoyed. We also ordered a bottle of wine which was affordable! Perhaps dinner is better. I would have considered Etapes a 5 star establishment based on service alone; luckily the food was also incredible. First, the service. Communication with the staff via email was efficient and they were able to accommodate our party of 8 without issue. One guest and I arrived early and decided to chat and wait for our party outside -- a server noticed us and offered to bring us drinks and turn on the terrace heater while we waited. Later, one of the children in our group wanted orange fanta while the other wanted just plain orange juice; our server went away to fetch drinks and then informed us they do not carry orange juice, but she asked a bus boy to run down the street and buy some for us. That was a really nice touch, in particular for one of the children. The tasting menu was simply fantastic, and well worth the price. I'll echo other reviews and say it felt like a steal. Fresh scallops, tasty salmon crudo, and tender cochinillo were great highlights, but the wine stole the show: a lovely 2009 Syrah from the owner's cellar complemented the meal nicely. I did not get the feeling of a flawless progression of dishes that you do from the type of restaurant that in my mind screams *'s. I won't nitpick through every detail, but would say that I felt the kitchen generally erred on the side of under-salting especially on the linguini, and the crispy suckling pig, well, wasn't very crispy. My wife and I came here because of the great reviews on yelp. We both ordered the Chef's menu. The journey began with red prawn tartar. While the prawns were fresh, the sauce didn't really match the prawn itself. The second course was Tuna Tataki with wasabi sauce and soy gelatin. This dish is below par overall as it was too salty. The extra salt on top of the tuna is unnecessary since it came with the soy gelatin. Third is the Duck Ravioli with foie sauce. It was okay, but a bit too heavy for fine dining. It was disappointing overall. The looks of what we had were very different from some other pictures here on yelp. Maybe they had a different chef that day. read more

We were recommended to this Restaurant by the Concierge at our hotel. I am so thankful for this recommendation because the evening and the food could only be classified as exquisitely spectacular. We came in without a reservation, and although they were fairly booked, they moved two tables to accommodate us so that "we would not have to look at a wall." Talk about excellent service. The three waiters were all equally courteous and knew what they were doing. Despite a 16 person group seated next to us, the restaurant was comfortable and very stylish. Then came the food, the menu is in Catalan, as it should be, but it is impossible to go wrong. The appetizers were delicious and delicate, and the main courses were even more so. This meal probably ranks as one of the most delectable meals I have ever eaten around the globe. I mean Didac should be training others to work the front of the house. Food is really awesome. We ate at many highly recommended tapas bars in Barcelona while we were there. Some were good, but none had food like Etapes. Food, like a good concert, should harmonize across the plates. Each plate at Etapes built on the next and the meal was combined with great wines. The lamb shank, duck raviolis, scallops and cannelloni are all worth a return trip to Barcelona. I'd skip the paella, mostly because I'm just not a paella fan. My wife ordered it, and while it was good (probably the best I've ever had), I thought the other dishes were superior. read more

If you factor in how affordable it was, especially for the quality of the food, it may be the best restaurant I've ever eaten at overall. The food was amazingly fresh and every single dish delighted. I don't generally speak in hyperbole, and I honestly mean everything that I'm saying (typing) right now. I highly recommend it. I was there in August of 2012, with a group of guys for a bachelor party, and every single one of them thought that the meal was at least very good (some agreed that it was terrific). Highly modest and unpretentious for such an exceptional standard of food, which is rare for such creative cuisine restaurants, at least in Barcelona. Since the restaurant is small, I highly recommend making reservations for this amazing restaurant as you do not want to miss out on this delicious cuisine. For our meal we ordered the: - Foie Gras - delicious and the texture was amazing - Cannelloni App - the cheese was melted perfectly, and the whole appetizer tied together so well with flavor and was delicious - Bread with Tomato - Seafood Paella - definitely recommend, we ordered for serving of 4 people and it came out in a huge pan before it was served individually. - Crema Catalana - delicious and a great way to end a fantastic meal - Tiramisu - didn't get to try Everything was absolutely delicious and the presentation of every course was so gorgeous that I almost didn't even want to eat it! I had the tasting menu- because of the great reviews on yelp. The service was wonderful, but the food was not as good as I had hoped. The amuse bouche- strawberry mousse with shrimp dust and flower petals was pretty- but not very good. The scallops with ham were good- probably the best thing. The salmon was not to my taste- I gave it to my husband (salmon with caviar and seaweed "pasta"- not for me). The lamb with peas was good (but tiny) and the deconstructed tiramisu was ridiculous- 2 bites? It was good, but ridiculously small. I actually left hungry- thank goodness I'd stashed some bread and butter in my hotel room. I've never ordered a tasting menu and left hungry- but hey, there's always a first time. My husband's paella was huge- and delicious- at 24 euros a much better deal than my 35 euro tasting menu- although his paella was far too fishy for me. I'm not a fish person. He loved it. The tomato bread was very good- super super crunchy- like crackers! I liked that. Again, service was great- I just didn't like the food I ordered. Maybe other things are better. I don't know. Every night there is a huge wait here and for very good reason. Everything is exceptional. This was my first cuisine experience in Barcelona and I could not have been more pleased. With a party of 5 we choose to eat everything family style, and let our waiter pick all of our dishes. All the tapas were delicious and a bit more adventurous than we would have chosen ourselves. The wine pairings were phenomenal as well. When I return to Barcelona I will be sure to stop here again! read more

Absolutely deserves a five star review. The food here is all "a la minut" which means if you order rice it will take 20 minutes, as noted on the menu. We started with a salad that included pumpkin and watermelon - refreshing and delicious. I had the fish of the day (sea breem) which was perfectly cooked; my wife had smoked rice which she loved. We ended with tiramisu which we had without the ladyfingers (my wife is gluten intolerant). The staff is wonderful - attentive to your needs and cheerful to serve you.
