I've been here twice in the past month. Once I ordered the Texas Chili and it was pretty tasty. I love chili but don't like beans, so Texas (beanless) Chili was the way to go! Second time I ordered the Queso Fundido as an appetizer and got the Spicy Chicken Sandwich as my meal. The food that I've tried has been delicious. I've heard great reviews about the tacos too! However, they only come out as one taco with no side so you need to order a few to make a meal. My husband enjoyed the Frito Pie- which is essentially their chili with Fritos on top. I love that they serve local craft beers, however both times I haven't been a big fan of their beer list. I love the atmosphere outside! The inside atmosphere left more to be desired. I wasn't a big fan on the picnic table like setting. If you follow my reviews, you know I love craft beer & am all about the ambiance. Had a really good dinner with a friend. Some great soft tacos. The beef was juicy and moist. But one of the tacos had an unusual seasoning that didn't really fit the "taco" flavor. What a great addition to Downingtown! We dined here past Saturday night. We really enjoyed the food. The nachos were fantastic. We sampled several kinds of tacos and all were tasty - carnitas, fried avocado, al pastor. I had low expectations for the fried avocado based on a friend's review, but it was perfect. The tacos are a nice size too. The only miss on the menu were the sopapillas. They looked great on Instagram but were bland and sought in actuality. The Carmel dipping sauce was tasty though. As others have mentioned they have a fantastic beer list. Very diverse craft beer offerings. The only weak spot was the service as others have noticed. Once we had a server it was fine, but we were seated outside for 20 minutes and no one came to take our order. Luckily we had beer from the bar and I had read about problems with service. Thus, I flagged down a waitress who mentioned outside tables weren't actually assigned a server but were pickup. Apparently no one had decided to pick us up. This seems like a poor way to run the outdoor seating. We will definitely be back. Great food and drinks. read more

Although I read reviews on yelp, I don't normally write them. After my now third visit to Estrella, I feel a compulsion to write one, because even though I could point out elements worthy of criticism, I really like this spot a lot. I want to put some positive words out there on Estrella. The space: Quirky by design. The indoor space has very high ceilings and hardwood floors. There are no sound absorbing decorations or anything, so the place is LOUD for real. I was there mid-afternoon so it was mostly empty, but then a group of eight enthusiastic talkers came in and the sound bounced off the walls at a deafening rate. There's a random projector splashing the far wall at the other end of the bar with one of the "Alien" movies on a silent loop. On all three visits, I have noticed a real family vibe about the place. I'm not sure the family dynamic, but this is a place where the parents that work here bring their kids and the servers fawn over the children and you could likely even spot a toddler running around behind the bar. This is not a criticism. It feels like a really laid back, welcome-all kind of place. There's ample outdoor seating, from umbrella covered tables on the deck to wicker chairs and sofas in the grass. They keep on hand numerous water bowls for people who want to bring their dogs and dine outside. Very cool. Downtown Downingtown is sort of gentrifying and a spot like this is a result, but not in an unwelcome way. I read some earlier reviews before writing this, and some of the criticisms are valid. The place is loud, but I don't mind it. It gives the room a good energy. I sit at the bar, and it's clean, but did a bartender spill something in front of me and not clean it up for a few minutes? Yes. The bar staff and servers seem mostly young and possibly inexperienced, but they are enthusiastic and well-meaning. The menus actually are filthy sheet paper, crumpled and stained, on clipboards. They probably have a color printer on site where they could print new menus each day, or they had a design firm generate the menu, which they likely would have ordered in bulk, and they have boxes of fresh crisp menus in a closet somewhere. Why they don't replace the menus is a mystery to me. Well, this is getting long. Let's talk about drinks. I only drink beer when I come here. All their taps are craft beers from the Philly area. Estrella is attached to the East Branch Brewing Company, but they sell beers from many other local brewers. I've drank pilsners, NE IPAs, and sours here and enjoyed each one tremendously. I never looked at their wine list so I can't speak to that. Their spirits are all boutique brands I've never heard of and I noticed that a good many of them on display behind the bar had the word "Pennsylvania" featured on the label, so maybe they stick to local craft liquors as well. They feature a lengthy house specialty drink menu that must be popular because I'd say half the crowd was drinking the mixed drinks as opposed to the craft beers. Tacos: Estrella's slogan is "Tacos y Mas." These are definitely not in any way an attempt at authentic Mexican food. Except for the fact that the flour tortillas are made in house. They experiment with non traditional taco elements in most of their offerings. If you are accustomed to tacos you had in Texas or Arizona or Southern California, you might not care for these tacos. I lived in SoCal for eleven years and I think their unconventional spicy fried chicken taco with hot sauce, pickled red onion, sliced housemade dill pickles, slaw, hot sauce and crema is one of the most amazing things I have ever shoveled into my face. I inhale this thing. A craving for it pops into my head occasionally and burrows in for days until I get myself to Estrella and satiate the urge. It owns me. Still great but paling by comparison, the spicy shrimp taco comes with red cabbage and a cilantro avocado cream that has wonderful flavor, but the shrimp was kind of drowned in the sauce. Great flavor, but a saucy, messy taco. The carnitas taco on the other hand was slightly dry, but again, very tasty with the pickled jalapeños and onions. The black bean taco was fine but I have no lasting impressions of it, so it was slightly forgettable. There are also burgers and nachos and brisket and frito pie and chicken biscuits and other stuff that sounds great, but I intend to work my way through their entire taco menu before branching out. I still have to get through a blackened shrimp taco, battered fish taco, fried avocado taco, that brisket taco with a fried egg on it, and a few more before I expand my Estrella horizons. I look forward to putting in the taco work while I sit at the bar with a hazy tasty beer. tl;dr: This place is good. Keep an open mind, get into the laid back vibe, and check it out. read more

We order a catered lunch for our staff here once a month and they do a great job. Price is a little high, but to be expected since it's so good, really not a complaint..... I didn't have a bad experience here, I was just underwhelmed and dissatisfied with the lack of attention to detail. Everything was fine for the most part but nothing but the shrimp taco was satisfying. The worst part of the evening was the salsa that they brought out, which was simply bland. We really liked the queso but felt the salsa didn't have a ton of flavor. I'm so glad I was too full to eat my tacos because the shrimp taco was so spicy it was inedible. We found ourselves heading for Estrella on an early Saturday evening. Our first clue that we might have some service issues was an aside that the hostess made that she was not sure who was assigned to our table. Sure enough, no one approached us on the patio for 10 minutes until we flagged down a server and explained that we were ready to order. She immediately took our drink order and a minute or two later told us that our server would be there shortly. She did come up a few minutes later and take our orders. Then we watched someone try to serve our drinks to the table next to us. After a wait, we saw another runner try to give our guacamole to the table behind us. When our entrees came ... yes, they tried for another table first. I think there is either no table map, the servers don't know the map, or it is missing some tables. We did finally get our drinks and food. We both tried margaritas. Mine was the Smoky and my husband's the Classic. They were both very good. Great flavor, fresh ingredients, and refreshing. The caramelized garlic guacamole was also good. Nice crisp tortilla chips and very fresh avocado. The caramelized garlic was not strong ... mostly we tasted the avocado. I would have liked a little sprinkle of salt. I also had ordered the cucumber and tomato salad. This came simultaneously with the frito pie and my husband's carnita taco and brisket chili. My first bite of salad was a surprise ... it was spicy ... really spicy ... grab my water and chardonnay spicy. The greens and additions were sprinkled with a red pepper mixture that was downright hot. This is not the kind of salad I was expecting, and I could not eat it. The frito pie was served in a cardboard takeout container ... perhaps a nod to street food origins? There was a good amount of brisket and a lot of Fritos. It was OK. Not a ton of flavor and almost no spice, except for the jalapeno peppers scattered on top. The carnitas taco was good ... a hint of spice and very meaty. The chili was also pretty good, but not spicy. So, yes. The spiciest part of the meal at this Mexican restaurant was the salad. Although I feel the wait staff was inexperienced and confused about where to deliver the food, they were friendly, responsive, and apologetic about the gaps. I think I will give them some more time to work out the kinks before we return. read more

We decided to try this place out as we live nearby and like to support local independent restaurants. We had Margaritas and they were excellent. Sadly they were the best thing we had. The salsa dips that came with the nacho appetizer were all equally bland. The other dishes we ordered were just ok , not good enough to say much more about them. There seemed to be a lot of confusion with the wait staff , although they were all very nice and giving it their best effort. Maybe it is due to only being open for a few weeks. Maybe over time they can pull it all together! We will go back but we will wait a little while. read more

I could do better for less money at On The Border. We ordered the queso and chips with the 'loaded' option. The menu describes this as topped with smoked pork, queso fresco, pickled peno, and cilantro. Sounds good. I can't wait for my chips with 'loads' of pork. It was regular chips with a small cup of queso and even smaller amount of pork on top of the queso. That was $9. Way over priced and disappointing. I felt tricked into buying $1 worth of chips with the promise of pork. We also ordered the Texas Fry for $15. Texas style brisket, house smoked maple sausage, 2 fried eggs, refried beans, tomato jam and grilled Texas toast. Reality... fatty, warmed over brisket, 2 every day sausage links, and 2 slices of thick, non-toasted white bread. I can go to a diner and get eggs and toast for a few dollars. The brisket was terrible and wouldn't account for the price difference. This entire meal was not worth $25 plus tax. I felt ripped off and disappointed. The interior was open and bright, but I would like to see more table or booth seating. The majority of space is picnic style seating. Most people were eating outside and there was a good crowd. It seemed like customers were mostly ordering tacos or chicken tenders for their children. read more

I have been to this establishment twice. The food is well above par for a place as new as this. The bar staff is attentive, knowledgeable and very easy to talk with. Highly recommend the brisket chili (add copious amounts of habanero hot sauce, trust me), and the charred sweet corn is almost as good as the stuff in Oaxaca. Beer selection is heavily tilted to IPA, of which I am no fan. As a side note, who ever has the gonads to name a beer "Sugar Coated Pony Kisses" should be dragged through the streets. This the is epitome of Tex Mex food. The breakfast tacos remind me of mornings in "The Valley" in Texas. I highly recommend. My husband absolutely loves the brisket and the different salsas. They typically have some great beers on tap and adventurous drinks to try. I kept hearing about this place and was excited to finally try it. I went around lunch time on a Saturday. The place has a sort of cafeteria vibe and the staff seemed to be really young. We ordered cocktails, a mojito and a marg, which were pretty good. We decided to share the guac. It was a little bland for my taste but we added their tomatillo salsa which made it good. Also, their salsas are all in squeeze bottles which I didn't really like. The bean taco was very good. I also tried the fried avocado taco which was a little bland but the avocado itself was yummy. I ordered a margarita and a beer the waitress told me i could not order both it was their rule!?? whatever i got over it. then the beer i ordered was horrible on top of that they ran out of steak to put on the nachos! my wife's drink, lady bird was bitter and you could tell the bartender does not taste the drinks o and my 12.00 $,6 oz. small glass margarita tasted like cheap tequila was used and had a pungent taste that i could not pin point it may be there advertised natural agave. overpriced not good quality. Had lunch here last Saturday. We were able to get a table outside with no problems which was nice. Service was friendly and the wait wasn't long for drinks or food. We started with the Texas toothpicks which were tasty. I had two tacos, the fried avocado taco was awesome and i'll definitely get it again. The fried chicken taco was not quite as good. The add on's were good but the chicken was dry and it didn't seem quite as fresh. I'll be back though, more things on the menu i'd like to try. read more
