My favorite taqueria in NYC, by a landslide. Esse gets a lot of things right, starting with their little corner shop: there's something charming and refreshing about standing at one of their outdoor tables, people-watching with an awesome taco in hand. The vegetarian option (mushroom) is packed with flavor, and my husband loves the steak tacos. The chips & guac, agua frescas, and margs are all great too. Just a hands-down awesome meal through and through! no fuss, just good (and maybe a little pricy).
Do you know how invigorating it is to find honest-to-god, genuinely great tacos in New York City? Esse Taco brought me to life. My husband and I came here last night for a bite, and the food was so good, it had me dancing. I've said this before and I'll keep saying it again: the humble street taco is the best of its kind. Don't let the fancy versions at fancy restaurants with its fanciful iterations fool you. The best tacos are pared down to its essential yet quality ingredients, from the meat to the tortilla, even down to the onions scattered on top. Every element in the tacos from Esse was superb. The meat perfectly seasoned and seared. The corn tortilla, sturdy, holding all the toppings and salsas strongly together, folding easily without tearing. The onions pungent yet sweet. We also ordered the churro for dessert, which was the best textured churro we've ever had. While the exterior was incredibly crispy, the interior was so delicate and custardy. To have two polar opposite textures executed well together is impressive! Just writing this review has my mouth watering. If Esse opened a shop in my neighborhood, I'd spend all my money there.
Stopped by for a little snack and ended up trying the brisket, ribeye and ny strip. Each one was delicious, but the brisket was EPIC. It was so tender and maaaaan I could've downed 5 without a single breath. So I guess, come for the Wagyu, stay for the brisket? Don't miss the salsa! Also ended up trying the churro as well... no regrets. Service was minimal, you order your own food at the screen and they call out your name for pick up. Not really much of an ambiance, no seating. What they lack there, the brisket makes up for over and over.
I went to Esse taco right before a concert. I ordered myself the pork loin al pastor taco. The service was great and pretty quick. The ambiance is laidback and it has a nice aesthetic vibe. My taco had so much flavor it was superb. I like that they have additional toppings on the side like adding more salsa to your taco and hot peppers. This is a really good taco restaurant in Williamsburg Brooklyn. 10/10 recommendation.
When I heard Enrique Olvera was opening a taqueria in Williamsburg I knew I had to try it. I loved it. Wish there was seating, but the place is small, the brisket tacos are the winner, we also tried their other flavors but brisket were our favorite by far! The pumpkin soup was also very interesting and tasteful as were all the sauces available in the sauce bar. This tacos are expensive but Olvera is a 2 Michelin star chef in Mexico, so in my opinion, worth it. The bathroom could be cleaner. Drinks were good.
Super casual drop in vibes! There's a lot of standing room inside to eat your tacos as well as a few sitting areas outside I ordered the chicken "poc chuc" and the rib eye steak. I was pleasantly surprised by the chicken taco and I really enjoyed it because the chicken was super moist and it had a lot of juices. I loved the picked red onions The rib eye steak, not sure if it's worth the $7 price tag. They have one piece of steak, the size of the tortilla but the cut of the steak was thin. I wish it was a thicker cut or cubes so there's a texture contrast. I did like the green onions that they added on top but they might have added a little too much because that was the majority of the flavor profile when I was eating it. Would've liked the flavor of the steak to pull through a bit more
I consider myself a bit of a taco aficionado and I don't know why but I didn't have high hopes for this place. When I walk by something gives me frat party vibes. Came here with a friend and ordered the only vegetarian taco option which was hongos. And OMG they were amazing and I'm still thinking about them. Guac and chips also good, and salsa verde is flavorful. I noticed that they are unusually heavy handed with raw onions, didn't bother me but my husband hates onions so I noticed.
Really incredible. I got to try Enrique Olvera's tortillas when I was in Mexico City years ago at Pujol and he really brought his all to this place. The tortillas here are just as excellent as I remember. The meat could not be more juicy and the salsa selection was fantastic. Highly suggest grabbing as many of the roasted peppers as possible from the salsa station! I grew up in LA so I'm a Mexican food snob--this is easily the best tacos I've had in the city. Do with that what you will!
Cute casual taco spot in Williamsburg right off the L that always seems to be busy- and for good reason! Delish tacos- the brisket and al pastor were both super flavorful and filling. Also tried the horchata, very refreshing! Plenty of standing tables to chow your tacos down right there, or opt for takeout!
Amazing taco place! Visited there once with my friend's recommendation and it was good! Ordered beef tacos and it was delicious. Would love to try other things!!
I've searched far and wide for decent tacos in NYC and finally found some at Esse- while they are delicious, they are certainly on the pricier side (between $5-$8)
Tasty tacos in a casual, quick setting I've been to Esse a few times--it's a great casual taco spot right on Bedford, just a short walk from the L train. It's a quick, no-fuss kind of place where you order via iPads or directly from the staff, and your food is ready within minutes. There's no formal seating, but they have standing room at barrel-style tables both inside and outside. In warmer weather, they open up the space for a nice indoor/outdoor vibe. The menu is fairly limited, but what they do, they do well. I've tried the Pork Adobo and the Oyster Mushroom tacos, both on corn tortillas (a solid gluten-free option). The tacos are generously filled--two is usually plenty. The pork is crispy and flavorful, and the mushroom taco is a favorite for any mushroom lover. Their guac and chips are fresh and tasty, though the margarita if fine and on the small side. Overall, a great go-to for casual tacos and quick bites in the neighborhood.
Esse Taco is doing something right, because that ribeye steak taco? Unreal. Juicy, flavorful, borderline addictive. I'd go back for that alone. Also had the meringue sundae--crunchy bits in ice cream are my weakness, and this one hit the spot. There's no seating, so don't come expecting a long, leisurely meal. It's more of a stand-and-mingle kind of place, which honestly works with the high energy and social vibe they've got going. The staff is super friendly, which makes the whole experience even better. Not the cheapest taco joint in town, but if you're taco-hopping or just need a quick bite that doesn't disappoint, Esse Taco is worth the stop.
It's aight, presentation wise it looks good. I agree with others I didn't like how they put just a slab of meat. If I have to choose I like the ribeye better than the Al pastor. Skip the pineapple drink. I went to taco Ramirez after and I liked it much better! read more
Incredible experience. Every Taco on the menu is mouthwatering and hence the reason this location consistently has a line out the door. Another great addition to Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Casual vibes, however a super spot to eat and chill. read more

TLDR: loved the ribeye taco and cornhusk meringue sundae. Been to multiple of Enrique Olvera's restaurants and I've loved them all so I was super excited to try Esse Taco. Came on Sunday night around 9:00PM and waited about 15 minutes to order at the kiosk and an additional 5 minutes for my food to be ready. Got the Todos Los Tacos, a singular Gringo styled one which has flour tortilla and cheese, and the dessert. The cornhusk meringue at Cosme is one of my favorite desserts in the city so I was particularly excited for it. While I thought that the meats were higher quality than most (maybe all) taco spots in NYC, I prefer mine more simple. Didn't care for the sauce that was on each taco, or at least I thought there was too much. I also wanted more cilantro and onion. Didn't see anyone with salsa either. Maybe I'm too stuck in my SoCal ways. I did really enjoy the ribeye taco. I'd come back just for the that. The cornhusk meringue was more like a sundae. Tasted like a vanilla ice cream with some corn sabayon or cream and meringue. Thought it needed more of the corn cream situation and meringue but overall I liked it a lot and I plan to get it each time. There were many areas to stand and eat food which I appreciated. Everything is self-service. There's a hand washing station on the left the ordering kiosks and a water station on the other side. When you order the dessert, you're given a ticket to return to them so that you can one made to order. Overall: too much sauce for me, not enough toppings, but love that ribeye and dessert! read more
This place is amazing! Solidly in my rotation for every time I'm craving tacos and a lil something sweet. I always get todos los tacos with corn tortillas plus the corn husk meringue sundae. The tacos are so mouthwatering! My favorites are the pork and the mushroom. I also love how streamlined the place is. You order on kiosks and your order is ready quickly. You stand and eat. There's a cute handwashing station for before and after. Everything feels clean. Also love that it's in a cute part of north Williamsburg and not in midtown Manhattan where similar tier taco joints are more crowded, touristy, and expensive. Will be coming back soon! read more
Their tacos are delicious! I came a few minutes before they opened and there was already a line forming outside. Because I went early, I got my food relatively quickly. The meat in the tacos is delicious and I liked their tortillas. They only have 1 salsa available for free. If you want more, then you have order them when you order your food. The inside is standing only, so be prepared to snag a standing table. Definitely a solid taco spot in the area! read more

Had to see what the hype was and I feel like I got lucky cause there was no line (pro tip: go when they first open). Overall I feel like these tacos are good. I'm not here to yuck your yum but as a certified taco snob (grew up in san diego), there were a few things I wished were improved. I got the al pastor, carne asada, and mushroom tacos. I personally liked the carne asada the most. Adobada was not cooked the way I was used to (which is carved from a rotating spit). And the mushroom didn't have much flavor. But what got me the most was that the food came out really fast, almost too fast. And the tortillas are definitely hand made but I could tell it was not made to order cause the edges were hard. read more

Had been seeing this taco place with long lines and finally checked it out. The line actually goes by pretty fast and when you order, within minutes your order comes out. Got the chicken, rib eye, and al pastor tacos and will say the chicken one was the favorite one as it was juicy and tender and filled with flavor. The rib eye was the next favorite and then the al pastor, but all three will definitely satisfy a taco craving. Also tried the hibiscus grapefruit drink and it was refreshing. They don't have much seating but do have a lot of standing tables. read more
Came here twice and both times the line was not too bad. The first time was great and comparable to Taqueria Ramirez. However, the second time the tacos just weren't as warm, which really detracted from the overall flavor. We tried the set of 4 "Todos los Tacos". While it's a good option, the ribeye is hands down the best. Something about the orange sauce is addicting. Typically I get al pastor tacos, but would recommend just skipping that here. They have an option to add cheese (make it gringa). While it's good, I really just paid $1 for a miniscule amount of cheese... If you are in a dessert mood, the cornhusk sundae will definitely hit the spot. Especially if you are a corn lover like I am. read more
Packed on a Saturday but they were super efficient. You order at the screen. No seats inside. Tables are these metal barrels. Hand wash station at the end. Food was also delicious. I ordered a little of everything and it was satisfying. I would def come back. read more
As a taco afficionado, I was really excited to try this spot. NYC NEEDS better taco spots. There is an open sink so you can wash your hands before eating. Oddly, there was an Aesop bottle of soap, which really doesn't fit the vibes. Except, it was refilled with commercial-grade soap. The kind you want hand lotion immediately after. And this is a metaphor for the entire Esse experience. Shiny, buzzy, pretty on the exterior. But fails to deliver. We ordered one of every taco: ribeye steak, chicken, pork loin "al pastor", oyster mushroom. They all looked appetizing but one glaring observation: all the tacos were served with a SLAB OF MEAT on the tortilla. None of it was chopped. Which impacted both the flavor delivery, and the mouth feel. It just created an awkward experience where we all wanted to reach for a fork and knife. The chicken was overcooked. The oyster mushroom was really well flavored, it was smoked so well it was hard to tell it wasn't meat (aside from the obvious visual cues). All the tacos were pretty forgettable, and below average, even for NYC standards. The saving grace of the meal was the corn meringue which was unique and served with a topping that resembled broken macarons. Decent portion size. I'd come back for the corn meringue sundae (if the line was short). I will say, the ambience and operational experience was phenomenal. Smooth ordering: you order off an iPad with picture menu options. Your name gets called from the open layout kitchen when your tacos are ready. Instead of getting your corn meringue at the same time as your tacos, you get a card to redeem to tacos on your own timing (when you're done eating your tacos, naturally). Seating wise, there is none. Instead, there are tin barrels so you can place your tacos down while you stand and eat. I guess, we have to recreate the Mexico City experience in Williamsburg. Friends have raved about Chef Enrique Olvera's Mexico City spot for years. Unfortunately, the dishes he made there did not translate for Esse's menu here. I would only come back for the corn sundae, unless they decide to start chopping up the meats for tacos. read more
I'm always skeptical about waiting on line for hyped-up restaurants, especially something like tacos. However, worth the wait. We went with todos los tacos, which includes ribeye, poc chuc, al pastor, & mushroom. They were essentially all great. Not skimpy on the mea and the taco itself was a good texture and the perfect thinness. Grabbed some margaritas which were on the pricier side for the amount given. While the wait to get in and order took a while, finding a table and getting the food was actually quite speedy and easy. It was mostly standing room but didn't mind that for the tacos. For a place that had opened the weekend before, they really were a smooth operation. read more

Since I've had Cosme and Pujol on my hit list for years now, as soon as I heard Enrique Olvera had opened up a casual taco joint, I rushed right over to Esse. On the Friday night before the big opening party, there was a short line out the front, but it moved pretty quickly with two touchscreens for self service check out. My partner and I picked up the ribeye steak, pork loin al pastor, and the chicken poc chuc, done up gringa style, with one traditional to try out the corn tortilla. Al pastor, which is usually my favorite taco, was a letdown here and definitely the weakest of the trio. The pork loin is a bit dry and lacking in flavor, which is missing from both the pork itself and the al pastor rub. Weirdly, this one is topped with a roughly chopped salsa, that tasted mostly of mint, which did not go well with the pork. I didn't taste any pork or pineapple, mostly just cheese and mint. This taco did taste a bit better with a healthy sprinkle of extra salt. The beef had me skeptical at first since it comes out in an anemic looking sliver (thinnest slice of ribeye I've ever seen, outside of a fancied up cheesesteak), but it ended up being the best of the ones we tried and one of the best steak tacos in the city. Even though beef is my go to across nearly all cuisines, I tend to shy away from it when it comes to tacos unless it's tex mex fajita style since carne asada tends to get cooked well done, with all meaty taste blasted away. Here, the meat has a strong beefy flavor without being gamey and it melds perfectly with the cheese. My only wish is that this came with a healthier dollop of the salsa guacachile. The chicken is most surprising - I usually don't get chicken because it inevitably ends up dry, but upon seeing that the one here is thigh meat, I decided to take a chance and I'm glad I did. The thigh is so nice and juicy, really flavorful, and there's a healthy helping of the salsa guacachile, which approaches my platonic ideal for a red/orange sauce. The corn tortilla is twice as thick as an average corn tortilla, but super pillowy soft and the thickness is needed since they only use one tortilla instead of a more typical two for corn. As corn tortillas go, this one is pretty great, without the roughness that usually turns me off of corn. The four tortillas, however, are even better, incredibly thin with the perfect amount of chew. This has shot straight up to the top of my list of favorite tortillas in the city. The cheese they use for gringa style is just flavorful enough to bring a cheesy funk without overwhelming the meat. Highly recommend going gringa for all tacos here. The piña canela agua fresca has too strong of a cinnamon-y hit for me, but I love that it's kinda pulpy, which boosts the pineapple. The margarita is super tart and strong. I was excited to try the more casual twist on the signature Cosme Corn Husk Meringue. Ever since I heard about it years ago, I've wanted to go to Cosme and here's the change to try it at a fraction of the price! The meringue itself is pretty mild, just a hint of corn. The ice cream tastes very corny at first, but as you eat it, it tastes milder like vanilla ice cream. The texture is a bit thick, almost like a clumpy pudding and there's little bits of salty cream, that gives the sundae a "cheffy" feel. Definitely worth getting, but I wish it were even cornier - perhaps a bit more of the cream would help. The flour tortillas alone make this a spot worth visiting - I'll be back for more of the steak and chicken, but may have to hit up another spot ahead of time for my al pastor fix. read more

The corn husk meringue was to die for! Served on top of a vanilla ice cream it was delightful. Service was super fast. Food and dessert was out in under 5 minutes. I also had the duck carnitas taco. It definitely reminded me of the Cosme entree. Carlos the cashier was really nice and accommodating. Fast casual ambiance. read more

A casual taco spot right in the heart of Williamsburg -- you order and grab a barrel/table to eat. I appreciate that they have vegetarian options, even with such a small menu. I liked the flour tortilla since it came with all the fixings, corn felt a bit too plain IMO. read more
Some of the better tacos in NYC. Definitely made Mexico City-style. Ordering is quick on a tablet and all the tables are standing tables which helps keep the place from overcrowding. The Todos Los Tacos sampler is a great way to try them all, but my personal favorite was the pork adobado. Also surprisingly enjoyed the mushroom one, and thought the ribeye one was the most plain of the bunch. Worth a stop for a quick bite! read more

Food is 10/10 !! Authentic to the bone. Music is amazing, drinks are on point, atmosphere uplifts your mood as soon as you walk in. Felt like I was taking a bite of my moms backyard tacos. Service is great. Would comeback and recommend to anyone's visiting the area!! read more

Have been wanting to try this place since it opened. Finally. There was a little wait to order. About 6 minutes or so. Staff was very nice and helpful. They serve a few drinks. Didn't have one tho. Maybe next time. Tacos are pretty small. Had all four that they offered. All were amazing. My favorite was the chicken. Then the pork. Then the mushroom and then the steak. It was my least favorite due to the lack of flavor. Pretty loud place. And crowded. Will come back for more chicken tacos read more

Tacos Drinks Sound system Made me feel like I'm eating tacos in CDMX especially on the orange platitos. And you don't really see Restaurants balling out on the sound system like they did with the HI-Fi JBL set. Made you feel like a fiesta in Tepito. The ribeye bistec is so tender and the chefs know what they are doing. Worth the wait, salsas are delicious, si pican. We will definitely be back! read more

I'm a little geeked now that I know this is the same chef behind Pujol! I visited yesterday for cinco de mayo of course and got their 'one of each' option. I made it gringa because i really do love cheese on my tacos but an extra $1 for cheese per taco is crazy behavior. I still think they were delicious and had a great variety of options, but I think we've grown too comfortable as a society in asking for that much extra for something that will cost 5 cents. Their cornhusk merengue sundae is AMAZING. I would come back just for that. I will say the service was very slow when I returned my ticket for the sundae. Employees were standing and chatting in front of my sundae for 10 minutes and never bothered to give it to me. I had to remind the woman at the counter that I was waiting - so there's definitely room for improvement in their operations. I'll likely come back if I'm in the area. read more

I visited with some friends at 2:30pm Wednesday May 1st. I love the tacos. My favorite 2 are the pork and the steak. I don't have time for chicken or vegan tacos in my life. The guac and chips are great, and the drinks are all pretty delicious. Service is fast and helpful. Environment is clean. The prices are a bit expensive especially if you don't have a place to sit down and eat them. It's a fast casual service with empty kegs as your table stand. read more
Came here for a quick snack as my friend and I explore Williamsburg. Pretty expensive tacos but you can tell they make their tortillas fresh. Pretty chill place to eat. You order up front and eat on top of barrels. They got like 3 difference sauces you can grab from which is great, because I love hot sauce. Not a 5 cause it's like $6 per taco read more

As a New York native and a Mexican, I will tell you to not listen to any of these reviews that you see below me. These tacos are as damn close you'll get to from the motherland. The totopes and guacamole are top tier. Their agua fracas aren't too sweet. My fav was the pork adobado. Also this is a good pregame spot because they offer food and margs. The playlist they had going also had my feet moving. Needless to say, I'll be back!!! Ps: if you're complaining about the prices, please take a look around and see what neighborhood we're in. Esse Taco is Enrique Olvera's entry into the Brooklyn taco scene, and the chef of World Top 50 restaurant Pujol does not disappoint in my two visits opening weekend. The restaurant invites comparison to Mexican taquerias with more modern sensibilities. On entry, you are greeted with self ordering kiosks where you can select what you'd like and pay. The ordering system is fairly easy to use and not unlike McDonalds (though qualitatively feels faster). There are four tacos, a quesadilla, chips and salsa or guacamole and then a sundae for dessert, with margaritas (tequila or mezcal), beer (Monopolio) and aguas frescas to drink. When ordering your tacos, you can pay another dollar to make it a gringa with cheese, though I did not try that option. Conveniently, they have an option called "Todos Los Tacos" (all the tacos) which gives you one of each. Notably, the order system sends you a text in lieu of printing out a receipt, which makes it fairly easy to get your order number. Once you've made your order, drinks are made directly to your right. The man on the drink station worked efficiently and there is not a long wait, even when they're very crowded. From there, the order pickup is further into the restaurant (to the right of where you order). In both visits at extremely busy times the orders were prepared quickly, with no more than 5 minutes wait. The kitchen is fairly open near the order pickup, and you can see the obvious care and quality of ingredients that go into the food (the kitchen has more of a fine dining vibe than any taco shop I've seen). Once you've got your food, you will want to find somewhere to eat, and the restaurant emulates Mexican taquerias with standing room only around barrel tables. It was a bit tricky to find a table on my second visit (you will see me eating on a Jersey barrier outside in the attached pictures), but putting up with a little discomfort was certainly rewarded. The tacos are excellent, and unlike nearly anything else I've had in Brooklyn. Each is well composed and balanced in flavor, and certainly reminiscent of Olvera's taco omakase at Pujol for those privileged enough to have tried it (though obviously not quite as upscale in presentation). I've not decided a favorite, but the pork and steak options certainly stood out. I tried the mushroom taco on my first visit, and though I do not like mushrooms as a rule (a personal failing of my own), it was certainly well made and would be a great choice for vegetarians. The quesadilla is simple cheese and tortilla, but very good. I further sampled the corn husk meringue sundae which was delicious, but mostly vanilla ice cream (surprisingly, simple Whole Foods vanilla ice cream, which I suppose shouldn't be that shocking given the Whole Foods down the street). Overall this is an excellent choice for tacos in Brooklyn, and I will certainly be a place I return many times. The only real criticism I can level is that the place was too busy on opening weekend, but that's simply me being impatient about waiting in line. read more

I should have read the reviews on Yelp before I decided to walk all the way over from Greenpoint. The hype on TikTok and IG do not align with reality. I was very underwhelmed. As someone who grew up in LA my standards for tacos are very high. At first, when I arrived I was excited that i did not have to wait. They have kiosks to place the orders yourself which was super easy. The place is cute and they have fun music playing! But when my tacos arrived I felt so let down. I ordered the mushroom, ribeye and pork tacos. The first thing I noticed was that the tortillas don't taste fresh, they weren't even warm! The ribeye tacos were super thin and the meat was cold. The mushroom tacos had too much sauce. Maybe they tried to overcompensate for other reviews that said they were dry. I did enjoy the pork tacos but in comparison to other taco spots in the area it was still okay. Overall, I say if you're curious give it a try. My taste buds aren't yours. But my recommendation would be to make the trek to Greenpoint for Taqueria Ramirez or Mariscos El Submarino (or got to both because their offerings are different) to get your monies worth and your taste buds dancing! read more

Just the best taco ever. We didnt have to wait and ordering system is so simple and quick on the kiosk. We ordered all 4 types: pork, chicken, beef, and mushroom My absolute favorite was the chicken (added flour and cheese option for the chicken taco) chicken was so flavorful and juicy and esp loved the picked shallots on top. Im still thinking about this and making me hungry again. My other fav was the steak..it was incredibly tender and flavor was on point. None of the dish was super salty which i normally find at other taco places. The worst was the pork for me as it had a weird after taste. Ive had tacos in Mexico city and ive been to both Pujol and Cosme (multiple times) so was super excited to try his new place and def did not disappoint! Dessert was sooo good too and reminded me of the corn maringue dessert at Cosme. Def get this too! read more

I wanted to love this spot so bad but! it left me wanting more. The quesadillas were good, the carnitas tacos were also okay. You have better luck finding a taco truck in bushwick and paying half the price. The corn husk meringue was delicious! Will be going back to try other meats. read more

I'd definitely say this place is worth trying once. Ordered on a kiosk and got our tacos pretty quickly. Theres four options, mushroom, beef, pork, and chicken basically. You can get all four for a cheaper price than ordering a la carte. We got all four. The pork was the best in my opinion with just enough flavor. Beef was pretty tender, mushroom had a pretty Smokey flavor, chicken you can probably skip. It was busy, people eat drink, and leave. The turn around time seems pretty quick. Strong drinks, solid tacos. Their adobada is amazing, really tender and flavorful with just the right amount of pineapple. The carne asada was a bit of a miss unfortunately, just kind of bland (but not bad). Good guac, chips were a little on the greasy side, and the salsa (while fresh) just didn't have a whole lot going on. They're really efficient, despite it being a busy Saturday night. Found this on ig and decided to stop by on a Wednesday. The food was alittle on the saltier side. Drinks tasted weird. The tacos were good though as we finished everything. There wasn't really service as it's self serve but it was fast. Pricing wise it is fair for location. You get to choose your variety which is always good. Location doesn't have seating. You grab and stand which was kinda different but not a date spot. Would go back. read more
