I came into Jauja on a whim with my cousin who was visiting from out of town, we absolutely loved the food and would definitely come back. We ordered the chips and guacamole to start, which was delicious, crispy, and fresh. I ordered the Camarones Al Ajillo, which was amazing as well and served with fresh tortillas. It tasted like lightly seasoned water with extra raw onions. I was expecting a thicker sauce with a hearty flavor. The shrimp taco has a battered fried shrimp that reminds me of tempura. Although it was good, I prefer grilled shrimp. The tamarind agua fresca is very good. The staff is friendly and helpful. The cost is average about $5 or $6 per taco. The portion size is average. The comeback of the century, well maybe the week. I was super close to giving this little hole in the wall a two star review, as the birria burrito I ordered offers little to the imagination and little flavor to boot. It is incredibly bland. Then I tried one bite of the birria tacos and thought okay, maybe they have something here. I took another bite. And another. And another. And another. And another... Until I quickly came to realize that I had come to the end and was crying inside that there were no more bites left. All that was left was liquid consomé and remnants of a large horchata. The birria tacos are so good that I give them the ultimate praise. It is hard to find good Mexican, let alone tacos, in New York, but these tacos come through late in the game when you feel you have exhausted all your options. If you can, speak Spanish to the staff. I had to get on here and applaud Jauja. I've tried Mexican food in the area (even pricier) and decided it was time to try this Mexican kitchen. I had to go with the birria tacos, consome, and breaded chicken torta. From the first bite into the juicy taco (after dipping it into consome of course) I was happy. It turned my okay day into a great day. Seriously the food here taste so authentic and made with skill and care that it changes your mood. The torta too! I'm hooked. The menu was online and posted on their board, no paper option yet. What we ordered: - Huevos con chorizo. Eggs scrambled with sausage. Large portion. I didn't expect it to arrive with a side of rice and beans. I took the rest home. -Birria tacos. Well done steak taco. Very filling. I'd suggest 2 would be enough if you just wanted tacos. -Chalupas Verde. You can chose the meat you want. My husband added steak and loved it. Birria is their main item, but honestly the beef is tough even though they nailed the consume and the tortillas weren't falling apart like other places. Very friendly staff and the food came out hot. I've walked down this block dozens of times but have mostly overlooked Jauja, which is easy to miss especially compared to flashier Los Tres Chiflados and Mallenche Mexican restaurants in the neighborhood. I only wish I had known about this place sooner because their menu of tacos, burritos, quesadillas, fajitas, and entrees is way more robust than a lot of the other Mexican restaurants that have full dining rooms. There are a couple of tables at Juaja but it is a really bare bones space and mostly a takeout operation. I ordered camarones a la diabla but they ended up giving me camarones al ajillo-- not the biggest deal because I enjoy both dishes anyway and will just have to return for the spicier dish. It came with rice & beans, tortillas, and maduros, had good flavor and was just the right portion. I'd gladly return for a fish burrito or shrimp tacos for something quick and easy. read more

(He also is kinda weird and doesn't put any salsa or lime on his food) He would get these all the time which was delicious itself already. Then After doing more research I ordered a Birra taco for him and Birria Consume. It was amazing! If you want just explosion of flavor you have to get the consume. Dip every taco it it! My other favorite that I think about almost all the time when I am not craving tacos. Pozole Rojo which includes and entire tostada on the side! Typically I like this place. I haven't ordered food here in awhile though as I've been trying to save for people visiting. Well I ordered today and specifically asked for no onions for my birria tacos and no onions for my nachos. For my nachos I asked for just cheese and beans. As you can see in the photo there's peppers and there's even onions in it with the cheese. I'm so disappointed because the restaurant closes in 4 minutes. It's why I'm willing to keep getting into arguments with the doordash support for my food instead of marking them off and just accepting a refund. I only eat birria tacos now, so I judge them everywhere I get them from.... Jauja is the only place I will repeatedly get them. The cheese between the discs is 1/1 and so so good!! I've had food from here twice, and each time was great. On my first visit, the man behind the counter asked if I had tried birria before (I hadn't). I placed an order for chilaquiles and he gave me a small sample of the consomé while I waited. It was so good that I almost changed my order on the spot. I held my composure and stuck with my chilaquiles, which were really tasty. That second visit, though? I got two birria tacos and a bistec quesadilla. Best decision I've made in recent memory. I LOVE Juaja! This has been my local Mexican spot since moving into the neighborhood a little over a year ago. Everything I have here is wonderful - I am the hugest fan of their birria EVERYTHING. The meat is flavorful, tender, moist but not oily. I also really enjoy their chicken, steak and pork tacos. And their guac. Its really just all delicious! In addition, they just seem like super nice folks who have fortunately chosen to bless us with their authentic, home-cooked Mexican food. My work ordered us lunch from here and when my chicken quesadilla arrived, I had to go back & look at the menu. I thought perhaps I missed that it was a vegan restaurant which would explain the chicken. It was white (not grilled as it should have been) and rubbery and almost indistinguishable from the congealed cheese. I thought perhaps it was imitation chicken, but that was not the case. I've been going to Jauja now and again for lunch since they opened. It's clearly a family business, and their food shows that loving attention to detail. Their birria is simple and gentle and delicious, and their chicken tinga is beautifully smoky and complex in flavor. Excellent value too: three of their tacos is a full meal, even for a big eater.
