I wish I hadn't fallen for this tourist trap. I can't speak to the other locations, but this one was extremely subpar. It's located inside the Time Out Market and there was plenty of seating available even on a busy weekend. The prices were steep for a very basic bagel, and the wait was much longer than expected. Overall, I didn't think the food justified either the cost or the wait. I wouldn't rush back. read more

I really like the Ess-a-bagel in midtown and was a little disappointed by the quality of this one in comparison. The menu is smaller which is understandable but unfortunately I thought the quality of the bagels were not as good as the midtown location either. The Time Out Market is very nice to look at view of the city and Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges though so i recommend checking out the market. Just don't expect the same quality of bagel as at the midtown location. read more

Realistically I would give this location 3.5 stars. It wasn't amazing and it wasn't bad. It was good so I'm going to lean towards the 3 star side. We had their signature bagel on everything. I had a few bagels during my NYC visit. This was in the middle and the score says so too. The service was fine. The market is amazing with so many options. At the end of the day you'll probably wish you had gotten food from another place after making your choice. If you ar win the mood for a bagel it won't disappoint but it probably won't blow you away either. read more

BLTA In my extensive research for the best bagels in NY, Ess-a-bagel always popped up. Since Yelp BFF and I decided to make an early morning trip out to Brooklyn for Dumbo, this was the perfect place to grab breakfast. I seriously don't know what is in the NY water, but the bagels are out of this world! It's so crispy on the outside, yet fluffy on the inside. We ordered a BLTA (bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado) on an everything bagel to share. The bagel was perfect, the bacon was crispy, and the veggies were fresh. Honestly, we probably could've ordered another one if we didn't already had lunch plans. Definitely add this to your food bucket list! Thanks for reading my reviews! I love a good bagel and this was a recommendation from my husband's boss. Service was good, they, have plenty of options, prices seem fair. I think my expectations were set too high because I was told that they blow Goldberg's bagels out of the water. This was not my experience. I had an everything bagel with egg and cheese and it was good, but no where near the best bagel I have ever had. I don't think I would even call it great. However we were really glad we made the trip over to the market place because the views are amazing out front and if we hadn't tried Ess-a-Bagel we would have had fomo. read more

Oh man, I was so pumped to find this bagel place after hearing about it on Tik Tok. I was fully prepared to see a long line but this location is inside of an enclosed street market and I went right when it opened, so there was only like one or two people around. I ordered an everything bagel with cream cheese because I wanted a good NY bagel while visiting and Ess-A-Bagel delivered! I especially loved the generous helping of cream cheese-- I hate when places skimp out. The latte I ordered was also a great boost to start my day. Definitely recommend this place! read more

I'm a guy from Long Island, what the hell do I know about getting good bagels in the boroughs? I consider myself like Kung Fu, I travel the land and try the best regional specialties. Ess-a-bagel is one of my top five bagels in NYC. To have them located in The Time Out Market is awesome. I have my wife with me, I could have drove to Russ & Daughters for a quality bagel but I want to sit and sip some hot coffee and enjoy breakfast. Ess-a-bagel Brooklyn here we come. It's early in the morning and I find a parking spot close to the market, yay! We place our order for the Signature Favorite bagel. I asked for the bagel to be toasted and watched them create the signature which is stuffed with Nova Lox, Scallion Cream Cheese, Crispy Bacon, Avocado, Red Onion, Capers, Lettuce and Tomato. When I ordered, my wife said no to Bacon, Avocado and Red Onions thankyouverymuch. This is the Time Out market, there are communal tables for everyone to sit and enjoy their purchases. The toast on the bagel wasn't toasted at all and the bagel was a little doughy for my personal taste. But all is forgiven when they added the Nova Lox, Scallion Cream Cheese and Capers. Capers?! Yesssss.. This was an added treat, that salty pop made this a bagel treat fun to eat. Ess-a, thanks for making a good Bagel & Lox. read more

The bagel here was absolutely delicious, but since I'm from Florida, I think that of all New York bagels! They messed up our order, giving my mom lettuce instead of tomato on hers, and switching which sandwich was on which type of bagel. The service was fine otherwise, but not very accurate. Dang should've read the other reviews before I ordered from here. The service was rude. They claimed they couldn't see the screen when I pointed to the item on the menu (they could've have just leaned over the counter to see the screen). They gave a buzzer to pick up the order but never rang it, so after 10 minutes of waiting I decided to check on my order and found it waiting on the counter. The lox bagel itself was ok. It had too much cream cheese and was overly salty. That being said, it's hard to go wrong with a lox bagel so overall it still a solid lox bagel if you're in the mood for one. The restaurant stall area itself is fine. It is in the middle of the Time Out Market so there are a lot people, but we managed to find a table nearby. It is a bit loud because there are a lot of people, but that is to be expected. read more

We went to TimeOut Market and thought this was the perfect time to have an NY bagel since I had not had one on my trip. I've heard Ess-a-Bagel is good and I was impressed. I got their lox bagel and a coffee which all came out to around $24 which is a lot for a bagel but also bet that is how much they usually are. Overall I enjoyed the bagel and it was hefty. Beware: Cashier Katherine was rude. And they messed up our order. I just ordered a plain strawberry cream cheese bagel and breakfast bagel, when I asked for some cream cheese on the breakfast bagel she charged me $4 for a quarter pound of cream cheese. When we received the bagels they put a quarter pound on the wrong bagel and put quite literally nothing on the breakfast bagel I had ordered to have cream cheese. It was an extremely long wait and line for some regular bagels.... Do better. They upcharge for absolutely no reason. read more

If you are in Dumbo, this is a great place to be with the other stalls such as the Clinton St Baking Company. It is a great place to hang out after work or meet up with others. It will give other people in your group a choice of what to eat. Now if you are looking for the old school Ess-a-Bagel this is not the local brink and morter. I didn't know that, but it gave me a chance to walk around Dumbo. We were able to walk to Waters and Washington to take a picture on the famous street with the Manhattan bridge. We were able to also walk to get a picture of the Brooklyn Bridge. read more

Ess-a-bagel are my favorite bagels in the city! But this location really doesn't do it justice. I usually love their dense, chewy bagels. The freshness, the warm chew, the schmear... I ordered a cinnamon raisin with scallion cream cheese and bacon. Plus 2 uncut bagels to bring home. This was $13, which is fine, but when I got home they had forgot the bacon in my sando. The cinnamon raisin was good, with a really generous amount of schmear as usual. The uncut everything bagel was very under done in the middle. As a long time Ess a bagel client, I can say this bagel was almost raw in the middle compared to what I'm used to. I toasted the bagel at home for almost 15min to get the dough to a point of being edible. I'm a little bummed because I was so excited to have an Ess a bagel close by. I'll be back to give it another go! read more

We got bagels from the Ess-a-Bagel in Time Out Market, and they were fine. It wasn't the best bagel I've had in New York, but it wasn't a terrible bagel! Not a bad breakfast (and only Ess-a-Bagel and Clinton St. Baking Company are open for breakfast in the market) if you're in the area. The best thing about getting a bagel here is taking it outside and enjoying it with the market's view of the East River, Manhattan, and the bridges! read more

Good service. But didn't meet my expectations: a fresh bagel crispy outside and soft inside. I came in the morning and got the poppy seeed bagel with scallion cream cheese. I didn't want it toasted but was expecting a fresh bagel which it was not. In that respect it was rather tough chew inside and also from the outside. I've eaten at Ess-a-Bagel's Midtown East location in the past and enjoyed it, so when I saw their stall in Time Out Market New York, I decided to go there instead of checking out the other vendors serving breakfast. My bagel was fine - it was edible - but it wasn't the same as I remembered. Something tells me my experience was the product of food court limitations, rather than an indication of a decline in quality. For example, I was there relatively early in the morning, about an hour after they opened, and the selection was...sad. There couldn't have been more than five types available on display. I wouldn't go so far as to say my food was stale, but it definitely wasn't hot and fresh out of the oven. Granted, they probably don't make as many bagels due to space constraints, but I would have expected that more if I had gone near the end of the day, as opposed to the morning hours. I'd still visit the actual Ess-a-Bagel store if I'm in the mood for a bagel, but I don't think I'll order from them in Time Out Market again. read more

it's a great NYC bagel, this time in DUMBO at the time out new york market. for me, a plain bagel tells it all, and this was a large portion with the perfect consistency. perfectly toasted, and the portion size is large enough to eat half and then take the other half wrapped in foil for later. wish they had bagels like this in los angeles. read more

The hot chocolate was very watered down and over priced. When my friend and I went back to ask the staff if we could exchange the drink for something else at the store they would not allow us to and insisted this is how it is. In return we informed the staff we understand how it is made but want to exchange our drink for something else. In return, the staff just gave us milk to give it "more flavor" and it watered it down even more ! Do not recommended coming here for beverages. read more

Asked for no bacon due to dietary/religious restrictions and they added it anyway. Didn't realize til I was back in my hotel room ‍ they also didn't add any sauces as requested so the bagel sandwich was super dry. Not a great first impression. read more

Nice happy hour and a large chocolate drink selection I was at this unique Guatemalan (ish) restaurant a while back with one of my groups. I said "ish" because the menu has dishes from all over, ranging from sandwiches to BBQ ribs to Guatemalan and Mexican soups. It's out there, and even though not everything works that well, it's fun, and if you can't find something you want to order here, you probably shouldn't go out to restaurants. There was also live jazz music that night, which was loud but nice to listen to. Since it was happy hour, a bunch of us got drinks. I went with a maracuya margarita, which was decent; someone else had a jalapeño margarita, someone had a beer, and someone had a mojito. There were a few nice hot sauces on the table, with the red one reminding me of salsa macha as it had a smoky kick and a spicier green sauce reminiscent of ají verde. They gave us some complimentary blue corn chips and a very mild black bean dip, which was tasty enough and hard to complain about, as it was free. From the appetizers, we got the Hot Figs for $15.95, consisting of honey goat cheese, corn tortilla chips, and plum + pumpkin seeds. This was a unique and fun blend and reminded me more of something you would find in a wine bar. The mix of sweet and salty, with a bit of crunch from the seeds, was nice. This was good, and I would recommend it for a table rather than for a solo diner. There was also The Zingy Salad for $21.95, featuring zucchini spirals, yuzu, tomato, onion, cilantro, pumpkin seeds, and a jalapeño infusion. $18.95. The salad was fine with a bit of crunch and a mild spiciness. It was fine, though a bit wet, for lack of a better word. The best dishes of the night were the soups, which each had its own distinct flavor profile. My sight presence went to the Pepián for $21.95, consisting of chicken, pumpkin/sesame seeds, green tomatillo, cinnamon, cumin, black pepper, carrots, chili coban/pasta/guaque, and potato + rice. There was plenty of tender chicken inside, with the soup having a nice roasted flavor with some spice and a bit of sourness. The potatoes and rice on the bottom added more sustenance to this dish. Almost equally delicious was the Caldo Tlalpeño Rojo for a dollar more with shredded chicken, tomato, black pepper, garlic, onions, peas, chickpeas, corn, achiote, chipotle, Monterey jack cheese, and crunchy blue corn tortilla chips. By comparison, this was a bit heartier, with the melted cheese and shredded tortilla chips inside, similar to soups found in Mexican cuisine. While I also liked the mix of veggies a bit more in this one, as it added a bit more texture, I still slightly preferred the flavor of the other soup, as I usually prefer a bit more spice. The rest of the food was fine. The TPC sandwich for $19.95 with chicken, peanut butter, coconut cream, ginger, cilantro, pickled carrots, and lime was fine. For the number of ingredients, I found it a bit sweet, likely from the cream and the peanut butter mix. The bread was nice, but it also fell apart. It came with a nice side salad with a good vinaigrette. The most expensive at $24.95 were the Slow Cooked BBQ Ribs, consisting of baby back ribs with rice and beans. The ribs were almost a bit too tender as they lacked any bite, which was nice, but the sauce was a bit too generic tasting, reminding me of Sweet Baby Ray's or something similar. The rice and beans were standard. This was also OK. Next came some dessert. There was first the $12.95 Rosemary Churros served with dulce de leche & chocolate dips. While I'm not sure if it worked, the rosemary did add a unique smell and a bit of flavor, and at least it wasn't generic. The churros themselves were hot, and the sauces were standard, with my preference being the dulce de leche. I also ordered a Champurrado for $7.95, which was fine. It wasn't as thick as I expected, though perhaps the style is a bit different than the champurrados I rarely buy from Mexican street carts. The chocolate flavor was very nice, though, and I like that it wasn't too sweet. Another person got a $4 Alfajor, which I got a bite of, which was standard. This place is a bit hard to rate. The two soups were wonderful, I liked the appetizers, and I found a couple of the other dishes just OK. Overall, it was a good meal, but I'm not craving to go back. This would be the perfect 3.5, but I'll round up as that doesn't exist.
