I really appreciated the vibe of this downtown Mesa restaurant. Everything about it was cool, right down to the address (123 Main St). We opted for bar seating as there was a short wait for a table but I think the experience would be similar in either as this is a pretty small (more narrow) place so the energy is consistent. The staff was friendly and we had some good banter at the bar as we watched the various cocktails get created. Food wise it was good. I had one of the specials (a chorizo clam dish), an appetizer (fundido), and the tostada. All were good to very good but I wouldn't run back for any of it. The cocktails were well done too. It's not the best value and I'll admit I felt a bit nickel and dimed when they offered me more bread, I accepted, and then was charged $3 for it. Just tell me that upfront! It's pretty exhausting spending $16 for cocktails that have literally $2 worth of ingredients but that's where we are. Taking this further they have a terrible gas station 40oz beer on the menu (as a joke I presume). Joke is on the customer who pays $15 for it (retail price $3.99). All told, I would go back. We had the potato chips, elote, gem salad, halibut ceviche, and steak. We ordered the steak medium rare and it came out rare. It was sliced already so we didn't send it back and enjoyed it anyway. So I've been trying to get into bacanora for a while, reservations there are apparently booked for the next couple of months. I heard the owners had a sister restaurant focused on seafood and jumped at the opportunity. It's definitely a gem in downtown Mesa, I imagine the beginning of a new era for this downtown space before it becomes like Chandler and Gilbert. Arrived just before 6:30 and were told 1.5-2 hour wait. Debating about what to because we were hungry, we opted for a bit of barhopping checking out the local brewery with a downstairs speakeasy (forgot the name) and Taco Chiwas. Long story short it ended up being a 2.5 hour wait and we got really close to giving up and just eating at Chiwas multiple times. Alas, name called and sat down in this really tiny restaurant. It's essentially the beautiful bar area and like 8 small tables. I suppose they are keeping with the bacanora spirit in that regard. Ordered the augachile and market ceviche which today was smoked yellowtail. Both dishes come with several pieces of very crispy, freshly fried tostadas. I would say these appetizers were plenty for a table of 4, so in that case were an excellent value. The yellowtail was out of this world, probably the best ceviche I've ever had. The augachile was good too but it didn't steal the show. Ended up splitting the whole fried snapper because we had to, and being $64, it felt applicably priced as it was enough for two. Comes with tortillas, a sauce, and a very delicious slaw underneath. It is, expectedly, full of bones so if picking them out as you eat isn't a vibe then stay away. Each of us had two drinks but I do not remember the names. They were very boozy, and balanced. Probably up there for cocktails I've had locally. There is a cocktail book so that alone could keep you coming back to try them all. Overall, worth the 2.5 hour wait? Yes. But maybe I'll try coming earlier next time. So much so that my wife and I were pretty much yelling across the table. Also as the restaurant got busier it seemed the music got louder. I was so excited to try this restaurant but sadly, it was very underwhelming. This is a great place to visit if you want to add to your Instagram feed, but otherwise the service, ambiance and food were all lacking. The skirt steak was nearly inedible as it was so chewy from all the gristle. My husband had the Red Snapper and after picking the meat off of all the fine bones, he found it to be bland and flavorless. The other 6 people in our party didn't enjoy their Skirt Steak or Korean short ribs (said that they were "spongy"). The price was outrageous ($500 + for 8 people), considering the food was subpar. On a side note, they brought me the wrong order and it took forever to get my plate (everyone had finished eating by that time). The server also spilt a huge tray of water glasses which splashed all over my legs. Accidents happen, so that's not really the crux of this review, it was just the icing on top of the cake. After a long wait before finally having the opportunity to visit here, we ended up walking away quite disappointed. The people was the best part! A super friendly, smiley and helpful team of people working here. Unfortunately, that doesn't really help a place be great. Firstly, the place was filthy: the floors had napkins, food and more (no one bothers to sweep or clean over the course of the night I guess), we sat at the bar and it was sticky, had salt and crumbs (so no one cleans and sanitizes after guests leave - we saw this a couple of times), the napkins and utensils are just loose on the bar (so if the bar is dirty, these things probably are too), speaking of utensils-food can and we have no napkins or utensils--because they are self serve on the bar (not obvious); and finally the sauces and salt shakers were disgusting: one sauce had the cap broken off and crusted old sauce as the lid, while the others are dirty and sticky (this is supposed to be a place where the sauces you have should be part of the meal as a feature and actually be useable). As for the food, the ceviche was below average: it had no real flavor profile, it was not salted at all and felt like a texture mess. The chips/crisps were nice at least. Cocktails are interesting and most good. But they don't have a very good selection of wine and were out of what they did advertise. A very odd excuse for why they were out was provided...being a distributor for a living I chuckled at this excuse....really odd. Finally, ambience is very nice. I did like that. However, this place is at best 3 stars for all its shortcomings. Probably won't be back. read more

Fantastic! One of the best restaurants and meals I've had this year. We started our night with the fish ceviche. This was part of their night specials and it was so delicious. It had salsa Macha (Mexican chili oil blend). The spice level was just right. I ordered the ribeye which was also another special. I'll start by saying ribeye is something I never order as I prefer more lean meats however this was definitely the best ribeye I've had. The meat was cooked to perfection, it was so tender and perfectly seasoned. It comes with potatoes and beans but they were able to accommodate my request and I swapped the beans for cauliflower salad. Fun fact: chef grill master Roberto Centeno just won an episode of "Chopped" on Food Network. Well deserved. The home made tostada and flour tortillas were delicious as well. My boyfriend had the shrimp tacos which were good but definitely not comparable to the stars of the night, the ceviche and ribeye. Service was great, we showed up pretty early so we were seated right away and our food came on time. I loved the dark, moody and whimsical vibes of the restaurant and there's plenty of seating both in the bar area and indoor area. I dare to say I liked this place even more than Bacanora.
