I can't recommend this camper van travel company enough! From start to finish, everything about our trip was seamlessly adventurous. The van was exceptionally well-stocked and very well cleaned inside. Ours did have a broken cigarette lighter & a hard to manage radio (dim lights & wonky knobs) but that didn't detract from the experience. It had everything we needed in the way of comfy bedding pillow cushions, a fully stocked kitchenette with utensils, pots, and even a portable sink. They even provided camping chairs and a portable grill! It felt like we were staying in a full mobile home. The layout was spacious with plenty of storage for our gear. When departing they also have a leftover section in which we were able to grab some items for the kitchen. If you're looking for an unforgettable camper van adventure with all the comforts and none of the stress, this company is the way to go. I rented an Escape Campervan in Phoenix, in order to head up to the Grand Canyon. While I booked the smaller van, they upgraded me to the larger one. I was not charged for the upgrade but I wish I'd had the smaller for an easier time driving. There weren't any options at this point as their supply on-site is limited. This van has a shark mural and was named "Torpedo." Pickup was easy and quick. Their office is tiny so be prepared to wait outside if someone else is picking theirs up at the same time. As with any rental, check for damages and take pictures/video before you drive away. They keep a free bin on site at pickup - you can grab propane, utensils, dry foods, etc. I don't suggest their rental system for most things - instead, I went to Walmart for everything I needed but couldn't find here for free. The van was great and Arizona's generous dispersed camping laws made for easy and free campsites. It had everything I needed - pillows, warm enough blanket, room for luggage/stuff, curtains, water, fridge, and cooktop. The padding on the bed was pretty thin and uncomfortable so I doubled up. I used a cigarette lighter cord for a charger. I couldn't figure out bluetooth or aux connection so I just played audio from my phone. Return was simple. Customer service was good - I noticed an error on billing and they corrected it same-day. Though their prices are competitive with other companies, it's not cheap to rent these overall, especially once you add on gas and mileage. We rented Fine Feathers in Phoenix, AZ Just love the artwork on this van! Daniel made the rental process easy. I booked the trip in early February for a September vacation and got a great deal. We traveled to Sedona and camped at Cave Springs. The van was just everything we needed. I traveled with my two girls. From there we went to Monument Valley and camped at Goulding's. We picked the best campsites as well. Waking up in the morning to see the Mittens was the ultimate experience. I would highly recommend renting from Escape. I took this trip over a month ago and held off writing a review because I just wasn't sure how to rate them. I wanted to love it so badly and just didn't. Let me start by saying that I am a prior Peace Corps volunteer so I definitely know how to rough it. With that said, I'm currently in Scottsdale and enjoy more upscale things. I regularly camp though and enjoy the outdoors immensely. I've been torn if I didn't love this vacation because I didn't like the van life or if I didn't like THIS van. Therefore, I decided to write the pros and cons of this particular company and van. I hope it's helpful. The cons: 1- Super hard to reach the local business on the phone for pick up and drop off times or any planning. Everything goes through the main 1 800 number until the day before pick up, you can't even get a local number beforehand to ask questions. They then call you the day before your trip with a time window when you can pick up the van. So you have to be OK not knowing what time you can get the van until the day before. There is a VERY limited window of time for when you can pick up the van or drop off (free of charge). When I did try to get information the day before it was during a pick up window for them and the person working in the office basically hung up on me telling me she was too busy to answer my questions during pick up. 2- The vans are old. They have beautiful artwork on the outside, But the van itself inside was very rundown. If you like new or updated things this is not your van. We ordered a dinner set of pots and pans and plates, silverware etc. and we ended up not using them and buying our own along the way. That utensils and plates were so old and scraped we didn't want to eat off of them. The material on the seats is also all old and worn and the curtains are as well. 3- There is no Bluetooth in the van. Makes for a very long drive. The van is noisy inside so hard to listen to anything on the speaker of your phone. 4- The bed was super hard and uncomfortable. I'm more comfortable tent camping with a mattress pad. 5- The check-in and drop off window is a tiny office in downtown Phoenix. Due to Covid protocols only one party was allowed in the office at a time. There is absolutely no shade outside, chairs or water etc. Pick up was the same time for everybody. Therefore, you're standing outside waiting your turn in really hot weather with the sun blasting on you. Wear a hat or bring an umbrella. 6- There is no USB port in the vehicle. If you want to charge your phone bring an adapter. Pros: I - as noted above, the vehicles are beautifully painted. 2- compared to other camper van companies the price was very competitive. 3- The 1-800 booking number/central office is easy to reach with general questions. 4- The camper van was very easy to drive. 5- The staff was very nice once we got to the local office and even acknowledged the hurrying me off the phone call the day before and was very apologetic. 6- They threw in with my rate for free an adapter for my phone charger when I realized no USB port 7- I wanted to extend my drop off by a day and they were very accommodating (I paid the upgraded fee and it was no hassle). 8- They did not try to upsell me at all on any of the extras for the van. A couple other things to note. The van gets about 16 or 17 mph for gas. I think that's about expected for the size van. There are lots of additional things that you can purchase through the company if you need it. They have bed sets, electrical sets and shower sets etc. we did purchase the electrical set which I found very helpful. It had a fan and a heater provided with an extension cord. We drove from Arizona up the coast of California. When we were in areas like Joshua tree we very much needed the fan. Parts of Northern California we very much needed the heater. It worked well and was very useful. Overall, if you're looking for an inexpensive very basic camper van and you're not interested in any amenities this van is great. If you're looking for anything a little bit nicer with more built-in features or upgraded interior this is not the van. read more

We rented the Escape Van. taking advantage of a one-way special, to drive from Phoenix to Seattle, through the desert and along the Oregon Coast. The second day out, in the desert, the engine over-heated. We had to back track 40 miles and spend most of the day to get it fixed. While the roadside assistant gave us full refund credit on the cost to our credit card, the agent in Seattle deducted about $30 for no clear reason that I could see. We had a flat on the last night and got that fixed before turning in the van. The tire repair shop wrote a note on our receipt stating that the tires were worn, unsafe and needed to be replaced. These were tires on which we drove over Shasta Pass in a snow storm. The van was covered with dents and bugs when we rented it in Phoenix. They sprayed it off at my request. I asked for two ignition keys, as recommended on the Escape site; they only had one for us. The Seattle agent was quarrelsome and did give us $100 credit which put us a whole $20 ahead, with no compensation for the 100 extra miles we had to drive for the engine repair and a loss of the majority of a day on the road, which required us to modify our itinerary. In a nutshell, I recommend only using Escape for short trips. Don't expect yours to be shiny and unblemished as they look in the ads. They may collect for repairs, but, obviously, don't make them. If you are driving in the desert or over a pass that might have an unexpected spring snowstorm, rent something else with a reliable engine and good tires. P.S. Pack your own kitchen supplies; theirs are poor quantity and quality. read more

Besides the limited check in & check out times this company is awesome. Finess Dabbs was charming and informative. Miss Bourbon St. transported Peter Pan and I to some beautiful AZ locations and my aunts wedding in style. Zero problems! The van got 16/17 miles per gallon which includes a decent amount of idle time. Inside the van there Is plenty of headroom, curtains for privacy and good lighting. The bed was huge, and the kitchen setup was perfect for yummy breakfasts and chill mornings.If you plan on staying at campgrounds with showers, skip out on the solar shower and the electrical set is only useful if you plan on camping long term in one place. Another aspect we thought was brilliant was the travelers item exchange at the at the pick up/drop off location. This definitely saved us some money! We can't wait till we get to the chance to travel with them again. read more

Our van was perfect for the trip -- well-organized setup, it kept us warm at night, and had everything we needed. We were especially impressed with how much food we could store in the solar-powered fridge (and how cold it kept everything!) It was our first time in a campervan, and the convenience of being able to just hop in the van and head to the next stop on the trip can't be beat. DO NOT RENT FROM THEM. LOL, this place is an absolute nightmare. Our car broke down in the middle of the desert and we were stranded. We called their 24/7 roadside assistance who did not even answer! Luckily we had water and by some miracle we had phone service. We were on the side of the road as two young women for about three hours and escape campervans could not have cared less about our well-being and safety. Once we finally talked to them, they never even asked if we were okay or safe. At the beginning of this entire issue we called them and asked if we could get a new car delivered to us and they essentially said no way in hell. We spent over 10 hours in this entire debacle, got our car back and then had still had to drive it hundreds of miles with the "assurance" that we could get there safely. We had to skip the Grand Canyon and it's entire experience because our entire day was wasted sitting in coffee shops and trying to assure our family members that we were safe. I am absolutely ashamed of this company and every single employee we dealt with aside from Matt in Phoenix who actually apologized to us. Karen from customer service is definitely a 'Karen' and while Danielle from roadside assistance was nice enough she still never apologized or asked if we were okay until we told her we were extremely unhappy. I would never recommend this company to anyone I know and will be actively discouraging people to use this company. We received one key because "the previous renters lost one," our car had over 306,000 miles on it and when I made a comment the employee said "don't worry, the engine should have been replaced at 300,000," the bedding was a disaster and did not actually fit any of the beds, the rooftop sleeper had a broken zipper, the vent in the passenger side did not work at all AND there was an oil change sticker that was clearly changed from 306,420 to 308,420 which makes me think the safety of this vehicle is even worse than I assume. All of our trouble and our absolute disaster of a trip was worth around $300 to them which doesn't even recoup the expenses we lost due to the issues. For instance, all of our food in the fridge spoiled when this happened and we had no choice but to eat out for every meal which cost over $300 in food alone. I keep getting angrier as I think about this situation and how completely unsafe we were and how lucky we were that are prepared and independent people. I know several friends and family members that could easily of had life threatening events happen by just driving this car. Absolutely disgusting to treat people like this and that our lives, well-being and time do not matter one bit. Worst company I have ever experienced and I literally crash landed skydiving due to instructor fault. read more

I wanted to like Escape Campervans, but unfortunately car trouble at the start of the trip really soured the experience and made us lose confidence for the rest of the trip. The first day of the rental, our car would occasionally not start, and had a vibrant shaking when braking (it was also at 263,000 miles). We were told to bring it to an auto shop and have it checked out, which is not something you want to do on vacation. Found out it needed a new alternator, battery, and brake rotor, and it would need to be in the shop overnight! This led us to a mad scramble for a place to stay, a rental car, a complete change to our itinerary, and a few calls and emails to get coverage for these unexpected costs. The Phoenix staff and Roadside were very helpful during the experience and great to work with. But, with the first day stress and the remainder of the trip wondering what car trouble might pop up while on the road, the entire experience was more stressful than we wanted while on vacation. read more

First time renting a van to do a weeklong roadtrip in and we couldn't have been happier with our Escape Camper Van (Smokey the Bear: March 25 - April 1 2018)! The vans are so beautiful as each one is uniquely designed. The interior was spotless. The van was a lot more spacious than we had anticipated so that was a nice surprise! The van also comes with everything you need (bedding, pillows, maps, all cooking utensils, dish rags, propane, a sink, literally everything you would need if you were camping). All we needed to buy was toilet paper, paper towels, food and an extra blanket because we were pretty cold the first night. The customer service was also phenomenal - Drew and Vanessa were amazing to talk to and such friendly people. We will definitely be booking another escape camper van for our next vacation!!! read more

So glad I chose to rent a van from Escape Campervans when going on a roadtrip to Joshua Tree. The vans are comfortable and really include everything so I never felt like I needed anything when I was on the road and camping. Phoenix office just opened I believe so it's still quite small and you might have to wait a little to pick up/drop off, but everything about the process was smooth and helpful. You tour the van and its features before heading out, and have resources (ie. guidebook and phone contacts) if there are any issues on the road, which I appreciated especially as a solo traveler. This was our first experience trying out Escape Campervans. It was all we hoped it would be. The van was well equipped. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable and it was a pretty good value. We love the outdoors but don't want to sleep on the ground. Truly fun and different. We enjoyed touring around and visiting National Parks and being close to nature.
