What can I say... it's amazing! First tried them at their shop when they were having their grand opening. I'd never had fresh yerba mate so Erva was instant love. I crave it all the time so much so I made it a point to go for my birthday weekend, even ordered myself the loose leaf bags online before I went. Was able to meet the owners and try their newest flavor Tamarindo! Never did I know I needed a yerba mate flavor like Tamarindo, it was refreshing and nostalgic, filled my heart and soul. Not a Yerba guy but my wife is a yerba girl. Right off the back, staff is very friendly and helpful in walking you through drinks and what they are about. My wife got the the Tamarind yerba drink and I got the guava lemonade. Both drinks were bomb as I tried hers and didn't taste the yerba strongly. Very smooth and natural and it's super refreshing. We wanted a nice break from Boba and this was it. Nice quiet and chill music in the background and we enjoyed it. The drinks taste fresh and im curious to come back and try other drinks. Happy Latinx Heritage Month! I found this place while looking for somewhere to have lunch with my friend who doesn't eat meat. This place came up as vegan because they sell vegan empanadas. Unfortunately my friend doesn't drink caffeine and I totally forgot about that...and unfortunately they have a pretty small selection of empanadas *and* they're not very big. So I ordered the Bartender's Special, she ordered a lemonade, and we both ordered one vegetarian and one vegan empanada. The Bartender's Special is awesome! It has lavender and hibiscus. Not too sweet or too bitter. I tried the masala and the spinach empanadas. Wouldn't return for those but I'd like to come back to try the other drinks. This is our second stop at Erva this week and their drinks still taste delicious! I got the iced cocoa mate this time around and it tastes soooo yummy. It feels indulgent without making me feel super guilty about it lol. The empanadas we got were also super flavorful. The Masala empanada is my favorite between that and the pomodoro one we got. They're also really friendly there so stop by, try something, and support them!! If you want a lighter drink then go for their Bartender's blend (I think that's what it's called) under the shaken not stirred. It's very refreshing! If you're in the mood for empanadas this is the place. I've had their spinach, spicy chicken, and pomodoro empanadas. All of them are delicious. Juan the owner never uses Chef 'Mike' but bakes them to order. The crusts are crispy and the filling hot. The mates are very refreshing. I haven't had the chance to try all of them yet. I just came across this place yesterday and I'm honestly sad I didn't find it sooner! I was driving up Sierra Madre Blvd when I became intrigued by a sign reading "Yerba Mate Bar" and naturally insisted that my husband veer off the road so I could check it out. When I walked into this small shop I was met by the sounds of bossa nova and a cozy bar with a colorful yet chic aesthetic. The place has a chill vibe that is perfect for reading, studying, creative work, or just hanging out with friends. I enjoyed chatting with the owner, Juan, who is a very friendly and cool person and who has excellent customer service. When it came to the food and drink, I had high expectations, which were quickly exceeded. Everything is made with fresh, organic ingredients, so the food and drinks are not only incredibly clean, but also unmistakably delicious and refreshing. I enjoyed the cold brewed "gogo ginger" mate, draft tulsi mate, and ordered a guava lemonade for my husband--all of them were fantastic. I also thought I'd be indulgent and try a spinach empanada. Let me simply say this was the best empanada I have ever tasted. The pastry dough was the perfect texture and so light (unlike a lot of heavy, stodgy empanadas I've had), and the filling was incredibly flavorful and satisfying. It came with a fresh chimichurri sauce on the side which somehow managed to make it even better. Suffice to say, I can't wait to come back to this spot and treat myself and loved ones. After coming across fellow Yelper Kim T's review about Erva Brew and their Groupon offer, I ended up purchasing one myself. So glad I ended up purchasing the Groupon because I probably would have never given this place a try! If I'm correct, Erva Brew serves drinks that use yerba mate (similar to caffeine found in coffee, except that it's naturally occurring and gives you a gentle boost of energy instead of that jittery high that coffee sometimes exerts). Drinks have antioxidants and help with digestion as well as raise metabolism. All the more to try these drinks instead of coffee! I stopped by on a weekday afternoon before closing. They're located in a small plaza on Sierra Madre and Colorado. Lots of cars coming in and out, so definitely be careful! Storefront is super cute with several tables outside as well as some indoor seating. Interior is very aesthetically pleasing with wooden and white undertones. I wasn't sure where to start, but luckily one of the workers was able to provide me with ample assistance! She recommended several drinks and gave a basic rundown of how they'd taste. I ended up trying the strawberry-lime, just because it seemed like a more safe choice, especially since I didn't know what to expect with yerba mate in general. Good thing I went with a more general flavor because I wasn't expecting the taste! I wouldn't say that I could really taste the strawberry-lime, but after several sips, I grew accustomed to the taste and found myself really liking it. It's kind of like an elevated tea where flavors are more subtle but smoky and rich, if that makes sense. Definitely will have to return to try the guava-rooibos and ginger-lime. The groupon also allowed me to try two empanadas of my choice. I went with the pomodoro and shroom. They can warm it up for you, but since I was eating these the next day, they were packaged up in a small bag with instructions - along with a side of the chimichurri sauce. I enjoyed both of these empanadas, but I think my favorite was the pomodoro - loved the basil, tomato and cheese - and eating it with the sauce give it an extra kick. The mushroom was also super flavorful. Each bite was a little different because of all the ingredients inside. And I couldn't leave without trying their alfajores (four for $3.50). I love shortbread cookies, and these were delicious! A little messy with the powdered sugar, but the dulce de leche filling was super smooth and not overly sweet. Love that the cookies were crumbly and soft; eating it in sandwich form gave for a very nice bite. tl;dr - Definitely check this place out if you want to find a healthy coffee alternative. I drank the rest of the drink in the AM the next day, and I did find myself concentrating better with rejuvenated energy minus the shaky jitters coffee normally gives me. Both drinks were amazing and perfectly sweetened, not too sweet. Definitely would go back to try their other options. Love that they have a Growler and 750ML option. If you bring the bottle back, it's 50% off!!! For the Empanadas we got Pomodero: mozzarella + tomato + basil and Masala: chickpea + tomato + bell pepper + spices. I throughly enjoyed both of them, but I love Masala so that was my fave of the two. The Pomodero tasted like a little pizza pocket! We also got 4 of the Alfajores which is a homemade Peruvian shortbread cookie dusted in powdered sugar with dulce de leche filling. This was delicious!! Definitely should have gotten the 8 pack. Wait time for my drinks and empanadas are less than 15mins. COVID-19 Safety Procedures: The baristas have on face masks and gloves when handling food and drinks. Plexiglasses are placed in front of the bar area and cashier station. Hand sanitizers are available and 6ft social distancing practiced. I've enjoyed Erva's mate since I was a student at CSUN (class of '18). I'd stop by the farmers market every Tuesday to refill my 750ml bottle. Was easily the highlight of my week every week. I follow Erva on social media and was really excited when I discovered they'd opened a storefront in Pasadena. With the blazing heat, I decided I was in the mood for some cold, refreshing mate. You literally cannot miss the storefront. It's smack-dab in the middle of the little plaza and their signs are in your face! I love it! Their menu is simple so I was able to decide on my order rather quickly. I got 2 growlers and 2 750ml bottles Growlers: Bartenders Special & Hibiscus-Lemon 750ml: lavender-mint & strawberry-lime mixed with ginger lime. I started drinking the lavender-mint. I got it unsweetened so that lavender-mint flavor is really potent! I prefer mate over coffee bc I don't get the jitters after mate AND it's a more than effective source of caffeine that's fun and refreshing to sip on throughout the day. I mean, this IS a traditional South American drink that people drink literally all day. They do typically refill the glass bottles but are currently unable to do so bc of safety regulations during COVID. If you are new to mate I recommend their iced shaken mates, my favorite being the guava mate. They have them hot or cold, original or with multiple flavors. Service here is homey and very friendly. If you want some at home they also sell refillable growlers, loose mate and mate gourds too. Visitor's Tips: Parking on the weekends can be full, therefore there is free 2 hour parking on a nearby side street called Eloise Ave. Also bring your own cup or gourd from an extra discount! Amazing yerba mate bar!!! If you haven't tried yerba mate before, this is a great place to start. They have a delicious array of sweet, fruity, minty, and tangy blends to satisfy any palate. The cold brewed yerba mate blends are on draft, and shaken drinks are made to order for a super fresh, personalized drink! One of my favorite blends is a mix of the ginger lime and hibiscus lemon (included in photos). The tulsi passion is my fiance's favorite as a sweet, tropical tea. The bartender's special and the guava rooibos are also refreshingly delicious. I've also enjoyed the agave latte with oat milk - a sweet and creamy milk tea (and vegan!). We have been ordering the larger growlers from Erva to enjoy at home during quarantine, so being able to enjoy the original blends as well as a few new mixes at their new shop has been a great bonus. They serve several food items as well. I've tried the seasonal fruit and samosa empanadas - both delicious! The chifle and cancha serve as a nice snack while sipping on your tea.
