In the three years since I moved back to Tucson, I've gone here a handful of times, because I like the space and you can't beat half-price bottles of actual decent wine, not garbage house reds or something. I've only eaten there once or twice, because the gluten-free options were, like, a salad and fries if you don't mind cross-contamination. But whatever, a really nice atmosphere for drinks in early or late evening.
So because I've had good experiences, I decided to host my birthday party there. I emailed via the form on their website for their Tasting Room to get a reservation. No response. So a day later I emailed directly at the address listed on that same website. No response. So a few days later I decided to call, and the guy was like, "yep, we totally have that space free that evening." Boom! Birthday problem solved. He sounded a little judgey when I said that it was MY birthday, as if it's pathetic to plan your own birthday, when, like, how else do you plan a birthday, but whatever.
So cool. I have a space for my birthday. I am turning 30 and I have really bad birthday karma where nobody ever shows up when I plan a party (*pities self*), so I am apprehensive about this whole venture, but I have done it and my introverted self begins to bank peopling energy so that I will have enough to go around at Hannah's 30th Birthday Low-key Blowout Where People Just Hang Out And There Are No Formal Activities. I was secretly very excited, even though being old is no longer as exciting as it was in my early twenties.
So I arrive seven minutes late to my own party, but whatever, it's my birthday and I can do whatever tf I want, and the friends who are already there inform me that they don't have my reservation.
.....
Birthday curse: confirmed.
So that's neat, because I have invited a ton of people, and now we are filling up the space in the galley part of the room, which is most definitely a fire hazard, and I am doing my signature Jewish Lady Talking Loudly About The Injustice Of My Life™, which is a specialty I learned from my grandmother, and the manager (who was a pleasant young lady and seemed to sincerely want to fix things) was hustlin' and trying to casually shoo people out of the room I had reserved. So then we got our room and started ordering drinks, and all went well from then on and it is probably the best birthday experience I've had since my 18th, so all's well that ends well?
The owner of Ermanos personally called me the next morning to apologize, and I don't really have any ill will except that he was like, "Yeah, I was reading your email and realized it was your thirtieth, and I was bummed that we didn't get the room ready for you," and I was a little like, "since when do you folks read your emails," but mostly I was like "thanks," and now I'm curious as to what they would have done to "get the room ready" had the person actually recorded my reservation. Maybe just put down a sign that said "reserved"; idk. Anyway. That was nice of him to take the time to call, and the manager also gave us an appetizer on the house. So yeah, overall still fine.

The fact that they've majorly leveled up their menu, expanded it, and added gluten-free bread: A
Grilled cheese: B-, it said onion and I got none, but that may be due to ordering gluten-free, and maybe whatever concoction the onions are cooked in has gluten?
My birthday: A+
