I've been to Engrained twice; only tried the food once. I had a BBQ pork flatbread and it was delicious. The beer isn't as good in my opinion. Their pale ale is my favorite of the bunch, and the oatmeal stout is decent as well. But they seem to lack the complexity and rich flavors that attract most to microbrews. read more

Great place for a Friday night after work wind down. We can enjoy a drink and have a casual vegetarian meal - not always easy to do in Springfield. The hummus is a great appetizer choice for everyone. It's very flavorful! The black bean burger is my husband's favorite and I enjoyed the Fall Harvest salad. We always stop at Engrained on our way home from Minnesota. It's easy access, right off the highway, plenty of parking, good food, friendly service and a welcoming place to stop. I always order the Black Bean Burger, available with a gluten free bun. It's always tasty! They are most willing to switch out toppings that come with other burgers too. Definitely not as good as I expected. The beer was just ok, the food was not good at all. I ordered the salmon, which was Luke warm and mushy in the center, the fries were cold and chewy, so the waitress brought us a new platter. My wife ordered the Italian beef sandwich, which was pretty greasy. It was suppose to come with green peppers and onions, which the waitress told my wife, "sorry, we're out" . Then my wife noticed someone else getting the same sandwich with green peppers and onions, and voila, green peppers and onions appear on our table. I've been here 4 times now, and each experience has been better than the last. It's especially important to me to know that the food I eat has been locally and green-ly sourced, and Engrained offers that. I don't drink beer, but the people I have been here with frequently leave with a growler to take home. Definitely the best casual meal you can get in Springfield, both in terms of the quality of the food and the environmental/ health consciousness that Engrained offers. The place was phenomenal! I enjoyed every single thing about it. I love that they buy all their food locally. The cheese curds literally melt in your mouth. I really wanted to love Engrained because Its locally owned. They use local ingredients, and they brew their own beer. What more can you ask for? I knew going to eat at 7:00p.m. on a Saturday in Springfield that they would be busy. They told us 30 minutes, not a problem we are here with another couple, 40 minutes later we were sat, still not a problem. The server started out with good form, taking a moment to tell the table a little bit about the restaurant then asking us if we were ready to order drinks. We ordered two sample size beers, and two beer paddle samplers. Essentially we had ordered a four ounce glass of every house beer on the menu, as well as an order of pretzels. 10 minutes later we are told that they are out of pretzels so we order the Charcuterie Plate. 15 minutes later a food runner brought us our appetizer. At this point we really want to order our food but we could not find our server. Additionally I had been out of water for over 20 minutes so my husband goes to the bar to have my water glass filled. We finally see our server and everyone at the table is looking at him but instead of coming to our table to goes to the table across from us to pick up a dirty plate and to see how their side salad was. Obviously no server would ever take our order with a dirty plate in their hands but we tell him that we would like to order and he tells us he will be right back. 5 minutes later he comes back to take our order. We ask a few questions like what kind of vegetables are in the Shepard's pie he didn't know. We place our order, nothing especially demanding; meatloaf, a horseshoe, an italian beef, and a Shepard's pie. The side salads came out 15 minutes later and at this time the table across from us food had arrived. His meat loaf is under cooked. He ends up sending his meat loaf back 3 times. After 40 minutes we are finally able to get our servers attention and ask how much longer until our food is out. He informs us that the manager will be over to our table shortly then vanishes again without giving us an updated on our food or asking us if we need more water or another beer. The manager comes over in a polo shirt with his tattoos showing and precedes to tells us the that one of the cooks quit and then he said something in a whisper to us that including a curse word. As an individual who put their self through college waiting tables you never cuss. After another 20 minutes the manager reappears, he doesn't have our food but informs us ours will be the next orders out of the kitchen and it would be 5 minutes. My husband decided to time how long it will take and we notice at the 6 minute mark that another table that was seated well after we arrived food had been served 4 entrees in total. At 12 minutes we had not seen our server or the manager and at 15 minutes we flag down our server from across the dinning room and told him that we just wanted our check. We were charged for our drinks and appetizer. We never saw the manager again but as we were leaving we could see him hiding in the kitchen. 10:00 pm. I know why our food never arrived the meat loaf that was suppose to be my husbands kept being given to the customer next to us as he sent his back. I am just very surprised that the manager did not go back on the line to help his only cook. Does he not know the menu? Is he unable to cook the food that is served at the restaurant? Cooks quit all the time but as I have experienced working in restaurants for many years that the manager will go on the line to ensure that the food comes out of the kitchen. My husband and friends went here for my birthday. We attended Oktoberfest at 5pm. The article online said they would be charging $5 @7pm. Despite this, they still charged our group. After sitting down we looked at the article again and decided to go talk to a manager about being refunded the entrance fee because the guy at the door said we would have to ask a manager as that wasn't something he could just do. We were very understanding and my husband went to find a manager. We have never been more disrespected in our life. The owner, Brent, looked my husband up and down and said be would refund our money if we left. We can't help but think he reacted this way because my husband is not white. My husband was extremely polite and this was completely uncalled for. We will never go back and we are sharing this experience with everyone. This is a horrible establishment and I feel sorry for the employees. If this is how they treat paying customers, imagine how he treats his employees. read more

My coworkers and I come to Engrained regularly because it is close to our workplace and we always enjoy the beer and appetizers. We had been disappointed with the service on a few occasions but still continue to come here. However, Chanda (Shanda?) was our server this evening and she was so attentive despite the fact we were sitting outside which is easy to forget about when it is busy on a Friday evening. She also informed us of the rewards program which we had never been told about the numerous other times we have been there before and we were so glad since we come here so often! It was surprising that no one had ever told us about it before. The food and beer is always great here. Tonight we enjoyed the cheese curds and the pretzel sticks and they were both delicious as always. I especially enjoyed the Oktoberfest brew this evening and purchased my first Engrained growler because it was so delicious! read more

Never had a bad experience here. The food is all fantastic! My absolute favorite thing on the menu is the cheese curds.. mouthwatering! I've come in before just to have a tasty beer and cheese curds! I went here for my birthday lunch with my daughter after reading favorable reviews here. Absolutely worst dining experience I've ever had and I'm 50+ and a frequent diner. There were only two tables in our section when we got there about 1:30 so it's not like it was super busy. About 5 tables got seated after us. When tables were starting to get their food before we were, I started wondering what was going on. Our waiter (Ian) finally came over and I mentioned this to him and he said something about a timing problem in the kitchen. He said he'd have the manager come over and our food would come out soon. After waiting about 10 minutes, I flagged down another waiter to have the manager come over. She came in a few minutes and had no idea about the problem. Then he came over and said he'd forgotten to "drop the ticket". In the meantime, people who had come after us were already getting their bills and leaving. I would've left but they said our food would be out shortly...we waited another 15 minutes. When it arrived mine was warm..not hot. I had a Pulled pork sandwich which was just meh. My daughter had a horseshoe which was covered in gloppy cheese sauce. The only good thing about this meal was they comped us one meal but honestly, I think the whole thing should've been free. Maybe when people get their beers and drink enough the food might be good. We won't be back. I can't see this place staying in business very long if this is how things are run. read more

Terrible service!! This was my 1st & last visit to Engrained. We went for lunch on a Sat afternoon, Upon arrival we were greeted by the host who said it would be just a couple of minutes, as he was working on something. Once seated we again waited a few minutes for our server to come & take our drink orders. We placed our food order, he didn't write it down. As he said this was an easy to remember order. We order a salmon Caesar salad & a Carolina chicken sandwich. 35-40 mins later our server reappears & says only half your order is ready & wanted to know what we ordered. (Now you would have know what we ordered if he wrote it down). We said that we had waited long enough for an easy order, we just wanted our check for the drinks. He said he was going to comp our order. We said nope we waited long enough & that this was the worst service we had ever encounter & we would not be back. read more

It's awesome to find house-made veggie burgers since most restaurants with veggie burger options use nasty frozen patties. Great black bean burger and multiple vegan options. Waiter was super cool and helpful. And although I don't eat meat, I was super impressed by their pasture raised, antibiotic free and hormone free burger options. Good fucking job for that read more

This place was so fantastic it inspired me to write my first yelp review ever. I swore off of factory raised meats a few years ago and didn't realize at the time how much this was going to restrict my restaurant experiences. I'm always excited to find a local farm raised burger here and there. This place does farm to table right! Not only did they have a whole list of truly local free range burger options (next time I want to see what Springfield's horseshoe is all about) almost every item on the menu contained local veggies and/or meat. This is the first time I've been able to have a Hawaiian pizza in almost three years and it had ham AND bacon as they buy the whole pig. It was epic! Big fan of micro breweries and the beer was great too especially like the saison and the blackberry ipa. My girlfriend is mostly vegan and she is now in love with black bean burgers after our meal - they even had a gluten free bun for her. Thanks to our server Evan for a great experience and thanks engrained for the reprieve from the food desert of the Midwest we traveled the last few days. You guys rock! read more

Passing through town my husband and I stopped here for dinner and drinks. Great farm to table food! Nice atmosphere with great beer made on sight. Had the pony with a veggie burger and it was superb. We come to Engrained every time we go to Springfield for a hockey tournament! Great restaurant with very friendly staff. Pick an item that has a "barn" next to it and you'll get something that's locally sourced! The horseshoe is great...try it with buffalo chicken and the pepper jack sauce. I wasn't a big fan of the Reuben...I like really thin slicked of the corn beef and his was a thicker cut of meat that I wasn't too fond of. I gave Engrained a good review a few months ago but our second visit was completely different. It was very busy but there where a couple of spots at the bar, so my wife and decided to wait at the bar for our table. We sat there for 15 minutes and 3 bartenders actually ignored us the whole time. They even took orders from people who came up behind us! Pissed me off so we got up to leave even though we had a gift card to use up and we were an hour from home. Just as we were leaving they called our name for a table. My wife convinced me to stay. Our waiter was friendly and good, and the beer was as good as the last time but I ordered the Rueben sandwich and it had so much Rosemary I could only eat half. I like their beer but without good food I don't think it is worth an hour drive. read more
