Well the food was ok but not over the top. The fish was overly breaded but fresh! The slaw as not to my southern taste but I would order again. I am a fat guy from the coastal south so I know food. Overall I would give the food a 7. I sat at the bar. Service was fairly quick but not to the normal on most places I frequent. Took about 1 minute for the menu and after that ~5 minutes for a drink order. Not horrible but not stellar. The place was not to busy but overall I think the bar tenders were knowledgeable but more into their own conversations than the customers. Overall the drink was good but the service was ehh. Overall score 6 I did love the environment. Very nice in the layout. Bar was a horseshoe type and they had 3 plus tenders for about 8 customers. The tables wrap the bar area and they seem all filled while I finish this paragraph. Bar was empty other than me. Service at bar is a tad better but not that noticeable. Overall a good place to being a date. I did notice that several ladies sat by themselves at bar separate and was not bothered so I would say overall the environment is 10 for safety and astrology sphere. read more

Tonight's fish and chips were spectacular! Regretfully, my Bloody Mary was the worst I've ever tasted! At the time I ordered , I asked about whether the Bloody Mary mix was spicy. My waitress said no, so I asked for horseradish and worsheshire sauce , but I was told the bar didn't have worsheshire sauce, but may have horseradish which she said she would bring to me. I waited 25 minutes before getting up and asking for it from the bartender. I was told it was on its way, but didn't get it for another 15 minutes, so I returned to the bartender. I asked for it again and also asked if she had Worcestershire sauce behind the bar which she said yes. Totally the opposite of what the waitress said! It was terrible enough to find the need to craft a mix that was acceptable, but when the waitress couldn't be bothered to get what every bar has at their disposal, I became so enraged! Lazy, dismissive and presumptuous to think I would drink such a horrible drink without any effort on her part to correct the situation. When I finally got what I asked for, the waitress said she wasn't feeling well. I told her I didn't want to her reasons, but she followed me back to my table from the bar and insisted to talk to me even after telling her I didn't want to speak to her. Erin, the manager, came to the table and asked if everything was alright. As soon I I started to explain the inhospitable and horrific treatment, she was kurt and said she knew of the situation and that someone else would take care of us. She wasn't interested in my perspective on the situation or to apologize for the maltreatment. There are many restaurants out there that make sure you are pleased while dining, but not this place! Don't think this place cares about its customers because they don't! read more

Great service, able to sit on the deck with our pup. Fish and chips had the best fish I have ever had in my entire life.

Food was good, however overpriced for the amount of food you get, nice that they had gluten free options though.

We absolutely loved this spot. We were so grateful we ended up here. The food was delicious. Honestly. I had the fried chicken sandwich and it was so good. Everything we tried was awesome. The service was perfect and the ambiance was cool hip restaurant. read more

This place is fantastic. My friend and I came out here on a business trip. Stopped here for dinner and happy hour. Food was great, and reasonably priced - happy hour!!! Great wine selection and the staff was incredible. Very friendly, especially our bartender Maggie she's the best!!! read more

When we lived in CT back in 2015, we found the Engine Room on one beautiful summer day while we were adventuring in Mystic. We were thrilled with the unique-ness of the place, including the décor, and the original items that are still around. On our first few visits, I was drooling over their hushpuppies, which were warm and dense in a good way, and were served with a very spicy, smoky dip. For our entrees, we usually went for burgers and typical pub fare. The drinks however were the stand out item. Amazing beer list with super unique pours, and an ever-changing selection of local brews. Recently, we moved back to the new England area, and we made a day of it returning to the Engine Room and surrounding area. The day was overcast, and as we made our way inside, it began to absolutely pour rain outside, forcing all of the outside diners inside. This created the most awful cacophony, of people talking way too loud, and all crammed in like sardines. Food seemed to be not as good on our return trip, 4 years later. The hushpuppies were dry and stale, the burger was very bland, and the drinks tasted like they needed their tap lines cleaned. Service was snippy and rude, and the noise really impacted our overall experience. Prices used to be reasonable for the quality of the food, but I don't think that's valid anymore. They do have a free parking lot on the backside of the restaurant, but it's near impossible to get one of those spots. Local traffic frequently backs up in the area, and getting in or out can be a nightmare. Overall, pretty hit and miss, which ends up being a gamble I'm not likely to take again. read more

I tried this restaurant because I heard they had gf buns and man they didnt disappoint. It's so hard to find a good gf bread/bun. I chose the chicken burger and the potato salad as my side. It would have been nice if the had a gf fryer for fries but I'm glad I went with the potato salad, it was amazing. I would definitely come back if I was in the area read more

I tried the Engine Room about 7-10 years ago. Extensive craft beer list, but food was ok, but not worth the parking headache. Tried it again in 2023, Wow! New extensive menu with steak & eggs, big salads, HUGE menu with so many great choices!!!! Impressed. New chef! read more

5 stars for the awesome happy hour!! 3 stars for the food. Engine Room is a great spot for drinks and bites, but I would say their food food is nothing spectacular, just average. Their industrial, hipster vibe really works, the decor is spot on. The hush puppies and stuffed oysters were such delicious and well priced happy hour items, and the drinks at $5-$6 are a great deal! The stuffed oyster had a spicy kick to it that was to die for. I should have ordered more. There were so many hush puppies too that I was stuffed after that one app! Would definitely say Engine Room has one of the most unique and best value happy hours in town. The food was slightly less impressive. The salad was fine, but for $10 there could have been more of it and it was just lettuce and corn and like three tomatoes. The Nashville chicken sandwich could definitely have been spicier. If you're going to have an homage to the home of spicy finger licking good hot chicken- your chicken should actually be hot!! Also the fries were really dry and over cooked (I recommend the coleslaw side instead). Overall, a good experience and a great happy hour, but the regular food was take it or leave it. read more

Made a trip Foxwoods, caught a show and gambled into the wee hours in the morning so we needed a nice brunch to recharge the batteries before we head back home. Boy we found a great spot. Like most places nowadays, there were only 2 or 3 servers so they were quite busy but our server was attentive when we needed something. If I didn't have to drive back home, I would've partaken their extensive whiskey selection, but I just sipped on my water while wifey had a mimosa. The mimosa was light on the OJ for sure (no complaints here). I got the bbq brisket sandwich. As George Takei would say, OH MY! It was so good. The brisket was tender and not fatty while not being overpowered by the bbq sauce. I didn't get it with the coleslaw due to my allergy restrictions but I'm sure it would've elevated the experience even further. After my first bite, I considered ordering another one, but I restrained myself. I ordered it with fries which reminded me of pomme frites fries in nyc. Fresh fries that tasted a little burned and a mix of crispy and soggy. I appreciated they were fresh and not frozen so not a big deal. Wifey got the chicken and waffles which was also quite good. They pour a little syrup over the waffle and top it off with sunny side eggs. The dish looked very pleasing (I didn't get to take a photo unfortunately). Wifey thought she would need more syrup but I advised her to try it first because other reviews said the waffles tend to be on the sweet side. She agreed after her first bite, she didn't need to ask for more syrup. Next time we head to Foxwoods or Mohegan we will be sure to come again! Something to keep in mind. Reservations were booked solid a couple days in advance so book early. If you are a small group of two or four, you may not have an issue if you don't mind sitting at the kitchen bar or the regular bar. There is a small parking lot in the front and a larger lot in the back. There is some street parking but not much. read more

The only good part of my experience was my waitress, my drink, and the ambiance. There's not enough parking for starters, but that's not a huge deal. The hostess was incredibly rude and just plain nasty. The food as a whole was SO bland. I've been looking forward to trying this place out for awhile, and I couldn't have been more disappointed. Update: I called and spoke to a manager and he was SO nice. He offered to comp our meals, and said that they are most likely letting the hostess go because she's rude to them as well. Great management. I will definitely be giving this place another try. read more

This was such a cute place! I spent a day in Mystic, CT and stopped in for lunch. I am a big fan of history therefore the history behind the Engine Room definitely added to the experience. Apparently, the building was the first place navy engines were manufactured. The bar has an engine in it and the place kinda looks like an old fire station. The bartender was great. She did admit she had been there less than a year but she was very knowledgeable. I am a sucker for bartenders that like to talk and engage and she definitely hit that mark. I ordered the chipotle chicken sandwich. I was warned that it would be very spicy. I even ordered sauce on the side to test the waters. .... It's not. I enjoy spicy and there was no spice. It was honestly kind of sweet. It also came with a sweet pickle... I'm a sour pickle girl. The flavor was good and they explain to everyone that there are no microwaves and that everything is cooked fresh to order. My order came very quickly however the temperature of the food was as if it had been sitting out for a while. The fries were ok. Kinda small. If my food would have been hot I would have loved it there. It's still definitely worth checking out. read more

Super delicious and amazing service. Amber went above and beyond. We got the chicken burger (omg! Yum! So so so good and juicy), tuna credo (amazing flavors), chopped salad (too much dressing for me. Ask for it on the side if you don't like it drowning in dressing), Mac and cheese (delicious), old fashioned (perfect and delicious), and pb and choose torte and Twix sundae (both obviously good). We would go back. read more

Let's just start off here by saying I live an hour away, and I've been here 2x because food is life and the food here is noms. So there's that! Came here today for brunch and I was *slightly* less impressed than last time, but still very good. We got: -eggs benny - 8/10: I was in it for the cornbread -cheeseburger hash - 6.5/10: wanted to love this -general tsos wings - 8/10: that sauce though! Eggs Benny was good, brisket was nice and comes on a huge mound of cornbread which I'm into. I was disappointed by the cheeseburger hash, just fell a bit flat for me and it's everything I love in the world. Wings were good, but apparently missing a side that maybe would have bumped them up to a 9? All in all, I left a happy camper and would defo come back. read more

Perfectly fine but not overly exciting. We went on a Sunday. We were able to be seated relatively quickly indoors (outdoors was a longer wait) and they have a nice system in which they collect your name/number and text you when the table is ready. We didn't realize Sunday was only brunch, not a big deal but something to keep in mind. The hostesses were nice, but our waitress was pretty absent. She took our drink order, came back for our food order and we didn't see her again until the food came out. We were missing a meal so flagged her down to make sure it was ordered and she said "yes" without acknowledging that it was missing. It came out shortly after but she disappeared again. Two of us ordered the chicken and waffles and had to flag down a random staff member to ask for syrup and someone else to get water refills. The chicken was pretty good. The waffles weren't anything impressive. One person ordered the Benedict and enjoyed it. The chopped salad looked good as well. read more

walked in and thought what a Great ambiance. that's where the good experience ended. sat down and ordered drinks, a few minutes later we ordered our food. we decided to share the roasted chicken. 10 minutes later, what looked like a Costco roaster came out.. not cut up, just a whole chcoken. who wants to cut up a chicken in a restaurant? people were looking at us and it was quite uncomfortable and not that good.. and at this point we still haven't gotten our cocktails we ordered .. terrible experience... wouldn't not recommend read more

Probably one of the best gluten free buns I have ever had. It looked better and according to my husband, tasted better than the regular bun. I got the chipotle chicken sandwich and my husband got the grass feed burger. I got extra chipotle sauce and damn did it hit right. The heat, spice and smokiness of that sauce is amazing. The fries are fresh cut and dusted in a sweet salt; they are truly a great compliment to the meal. We were fortunate enough to visit on Tuesday for their Mexican themed drinks. The mezcal margarita is better than the traditional, husband agreed. Great first stop on our vacation. read more

Really wanted to like this place, the vibe is good but the food and service wasn't the best. Was in town visiting for a few days and wanted to try some local Fish and Chips and Yelp brought me here. The chips could've been more crispy and I wasn't personally a fan of the spicy tarter. Ordered a couple sides to try out a little of everything; the Mac and cheese had little flavor, and the Old bay macaroni salad was entirely too salty. Being from MD, I was REALLY wanting to try that. It was almost inedible. Positive- the chipotle chicken sandwich was good and the hush puppies were ok, the lemon rosemary butter wasn't so much my vibe. We also had to wait quite awhile for the server to return to the table for the check. Who knows, maybe we just caught them on an off night. Hope others experience is better! read more

Second night in Mystic. After a day of looking at art, we decided we needed to take a walk once we got back to Mystic. After relaxing for a while we headed out for a stroll. Thinking we'd just stop somewhere for a beer/drink, we passed several places and ended up stopping here. We grabbed a couple of seats at the bar and checked out the drink menu. Very impressive list of mixed drinks, wines and beer. We then checked out the dinner menu and found a couple of items we thought might be good. My wife ended up ordering the fluke and I had the scallops. Both of our meals were terrific. The guys working the bar were very attentive and answered all of our questions. The restaurant itself was quite busy and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. All in all, we are very glad we stopped here and ate dinner here as well. read more

So we we were visiting from NYC and we were looking for a spot to have dinner. This place has that rust flare with the Edison bulb lights and iron worked details. So I ordered some wings to start with and I had they're Chipotle chicken sandwich and my husband had the fish and chips. They're frying game is on point. Everything looked nice and crispy .However everything lacked seasoning. I mean like even basic salt and pepper. It almost seemed as if they're relying heavily on their sauces to add flavor. I've eaten here multiple times. Probably would have more often if it wasn't always so busy! Each time it has been a consistently great experience. The staff is polite, servers engaging, and the atmosphere in or out is fun. This time we ate outside on the deck. Our server was great. She had our whole side of the deck and handled the 8 or so tables easily. She knew the menu really well and offered suggestions and backed up decisions. Our drinks were super and the food was great. Not your average brunch salad -- incredibly filling and flavorful, I could not help but ask the waitress what was so unique about the dressing! Their green goddess dressing is made with sour cream, garlic, and herbs - it was absolutely creamy and delicious. Don't be deceived by the picture, this salad is a mountain. Between the avocado and grilled chicken I was full for the rest of the afternoon !! The cornbread croutons were a sweet and crunchy touch. I am afraid I'll never be able to explore the rest of their brunch menu because I can't imagine going back and not getting this salad! 10/10. Staff was friendly, great ambiance. Would have given 5 stars but wished the bathrooms were cleaner. Definitely recommend making a reservation prior to visiting. Looking forward to returning! read more

We decided to sit at the chef counter, which provided a great view of the kitchen. It took a few minutes to get a server but Leah was wonderful, very personable and knowledgeable. She let me try two samples of beer, and I'm thankful, because I didn't really care for the $10 amber ale. We were given a free sample of chicken and waffles. Now I've never been a big fan of this dish, but if they all tasted like this one, I'd eat it every week. Sesame honey hot sauce, maple butter, perfectly crisp skin, moist thigh meat, crunchy waffle. Amazing job. Now they only have five or so burgers on the menu but on Monday, they have a burger and draft beer special for $15. I got a French onion burger and a German helles lager. Holy crap. The dry aged beef was cooked to between medium rare and medium, pink with a hint of gray and a nice amount of juice coming out, which I let drip all over the fresh cut fries. It came on a soft Martin's potato roll with Swiss cheese, frenched onions, and herb aioli. I couldn't put the burger down; it was gone in about four minutes. For sides, I had the tangy potato salad which had some fresh herbs and whole grain mustard, which kept it from tasting too creamy. And the fries were fresh cut, the way God intended. Oh and did I mention the house made pickle spear that wasn't too sweet or sour? My dessert hormones were kicking in at that moment. I went for the monkey bread with the bourbon caramel sauce on the side. We got a tower of monkey bread inside a super hot mini cast iron skillet. If anything, it could have been cooked a minute less, I wouldn't mind it a little more gooey. We got our bill, and I have no idea why, but dessert was on the house. We got back to the hotel and mom realized she left her purse behind. Thankfully, they held it for us at the desk. New England is not a place I enjoy visiting, but the Engine Room is a great reason to go back. read more

Great atmosphere with live entertainment (guitar player & singer duo) when we were there on a Sunday afternoon. Good service and happy hour prices, but a somewhat limited happy hour menu. Hush puppies were unlike any others we've had but very good; they tasted like deep fried Thanksgiving dressing. Mushroom Mae burger was surprisingly bland and greatly benefitted from a generous sprinkle of ground black pepper applied table side, but the accompanying tangy potato salad was the bomb and some of the best we've ever had. Really cool place. Originally the first marine engine building. They use a lot of local product in their recipes. For instance, I got the mushroom Mae burger and the cheese is from the mystic cheese company. Some products are also from their local garden.
