I'm fresh off having a root canal done here by Dr. Yu and it was a great experience. From setting up the initial consultation to getting the actual procedure done (on the same day), it was seamless. I was in/out of there in a little over two hours. Upon walking in to the office, I was welcomed by a nice staff person who instructed me to fill out some paperwork. I was then taken to a room for the consultation. Dr. Yu advised to have a root canal based on his evaluation. I was then moved to another room for the actual procedure after having anesthesia injections into my mouth. After some prep work done by his very comforting staff, it was time for the games to begin! I appreciated how his staff guided me through the prep work and explained what they were doing. It honestly feels really weird to have your mouth wide open while having strange objects being placed inside. During the procedure, I could see they were passing instruments back/forth. There were weird sounds, noises and smells. I never felt uncomfortable as they always checked in to see if I was doing OK. Before I knew it, the procedure was over and Dr. Yu went over recovery expectations and the like. Overall, it was a very efficient and comfortable process. Hopefully I won't need to return anytime soon but it's nice to know that this office is available in the local area. read more

Do you need a root canal? With Dr. Yu and his team, you'll be in good hands. He's done 3 root canals for me at this point and all of which have been a seamless experience. He makes sure that his patients are comfortable and that it's a generally painless procedure. The healing part afterward is not painless though (unless you take the pain meds he prescribes). His schedule is generally pretty open, but I guess that would depend on the severity and urgency of your treatment. I recommend always calling ahead to make an appointment - I don't think walk in would be a good idea. No matter when/how you make your appointment, I would expect to wait 30 minutes upon arrival because schedules shift, urgent cases get squeezed in, and people before you might not arrive on time. Bring a book, airpods, or some form of entertainment to keep busy. Dr. Yu is very good about making sure you get xrays to identify if root canal is feasible for his patients. From the consultation onward, you can make an appointment and his front desk team will give you the available date options as well as the cost for your treatment given your insurance plan. On the day of treatment, they will numb you up, wait a few minutes, and then get started on the root canal - which I believe takes about 1-2 hours. I would take the rest of the day off just so you have enough time for the treatment and also be able to rest afterward. I'd imagine most people leave the office 2 hours after they step in for their root canal. Dr. Yu usually prescribes me antibiotics and pain killers post-treatment, but that can vary depending on the patient. He's a really nice guy, great bedside manners, and clearly very knowledgeable on root canals. He is bilingual in Mandarin and English - I believe he's from Taiwan, which makes me feel more comfortable (since we share similar roots lol)! They have restrooms in the building, but not inside the office unit itself. Ask the front desk for the restroom key! There's also plenty of parking in the parking lot - there's overflow parking if the lot in the front is filled up. There's also a convenient pharmacy just downstairs on the first floor in case you get prescribed anything. A lot of the root canal isn't covered by my dental insurance, so I had to pay a pretty penny for these treatments. It's not cheap, but saving your teeth from extraction is worth it (in my humble opinion). read more

I visited Dr John Yu at Endocare Center for a root canal for the first time two weeks ago. I was very pleased with the courteous staff and the prompt and efficient treatment by Dr. Yu. I also appreciate the fact that this doctor charges a low $38 co- payment with my insurance. Another dental office, which I won't name, that I visited about a year ago charged me about $500 with my same insurance! Before I went on Yelp to look for a dental specialist for my root canal, my doctor has recommended me a different one in Glendale. However, without dental insurance, their charges were much higher than I could afford plus additional consultation fees. I also think this consultation fee is unnecessary or being greedy since I want to do my root canal immediately / right after the consultation instead of splitting into two separate days or times. So I end up finding a different doctor. I'd say I am so happy to come to this doctor for my root canal. I was a little bit worried in the beginning cuz I was worried bout the pain and the amount they would charge for my root canal since I am having no dental coverage from my insurance. I also have read the review that he is from Taiwan and I personally trust more of those doctors. When my treatment was done, the charge was much more reasonable than my doctor's recommendation in Glendale. My root canal surgery could also go right after the consultation. And yes, Doctor Yu knows what he is doing. Both the nurse and front desk associate are kind and helpful. Even though my tooth was feeling odd on the first day after the surgery while eating, it started feeling nothing on the 2nd day. I am very satisfied and greatly appreciated! read more

I had a root canal done by another dentist about a year ago and found out that I had an infection on that molar. I needed to get the root canal done again and was referred to Dr. Yu. I first went in for a consultation and was told what would need to be done. When I went in for the root canal I was a bit anxious but Dr. Yu and his staff made sure I was comfortable and they made sure to ask if I was doing ok during the procedure. It was pretty painless minus the sounds of the tools but I had my headphones in so that helped a bit. Everyone was very friendly and made me feel taken care of! I am deathly afraid of dentists and getting work done on my teeth because of past experiences. I was referred by my general dentist because I needed a root canal done. From someone who is already traumatized by my childhood dentist trips... the thought of cleaning out the nerves and roots of my tooth was so scary and I was very stressed to say the least. I was a wreck on the inside walking into Dr Yu's office. During the consultation I expressed to Dr Yu I was very scared of the pain and briefly went over why I was scared. He was extremely understanding and told me not to worry. Of course... I was still worried lol. When we started the procedure I was holding on to my car keys for dear life cause I was so nervous.. again, Dr Yu and his assistant assured me that he will make sure I am nice and numbed before he starts and that at any point I feel anything at all to raise my left hand. Im not going to lie... I got my left hand ready just in case! Long story short - I had such a pleasant experience today. I felt absolutely no pain, That's all I cared about. Dr Yu checked in on me 3 times during the procedure to make sure I was okay. I even dozed off a lil bit and closed my eyes to rest. I was very impressed and I highly recommend Dr. Yun and EndoCare. After calling over a dozen specialists in the area that accepted my HMO insurance but still wanted to charge me in excess of $500 for a root canal redo, a local dentist suggested I try EndoCare with PPO insurance instead. I thought the cost would be more. It wasn't close, it was about $125. Not only did I save a significant amount, the doctor walked me through everything he was doing and explained it. On top of that, and most importantly, while almost every other specialist seemed to be playing some kind of bill-padding game with additional and mandatory costs (like a PET scan instead of X-rays) the cost that EndoCare quoted me was the cost they charged. Dr. Yu and his team did a great job! I just had my annual check-up with my regular dentist who told me that I had a tooth that likely needed to be extracted next to another tooth that needed a root canal. Dr. Yu told me to come in to take a look so he could confirm. The receptionist was extremely friendly and answered all of my questions. They were punctual with the appointment time. After taking x-rays, Dr. Yu confirmed that I only had one problematic tooth that already had a root canal. We could either try to redo the root canal to save my tooth or extract it. Dr. Yu provided details with each option to help me make my best decision and was extremely transparent with the pros and cons of each, as well as what could potentially go wrong. After reviewing my options with him, I decided to try and save my tooth with a redo of my root canal. I've had a lot of dental work done in my day and the novocain process is my least favorite - I barely felt it when Dr. Yu did it! He effectively numbed the area around my tooth. He was constantly check in to make sure I was comfortable and worked swiftly and cleanly. My tooth was only sore for a little bit - he followed up the next day to make sure everything was OK. NOT ALL ENDODONTISTS ARE THE SAME!! Highly recommend Dr. Yu to save your tooth. Long story short: my original endodontist couldn't save my tooth and recommended extraction. Upon asking my network, everyone suggested that I get a second opinion from Dr. Yu. I called Monday morning, got an emergency root canal treatment the same day in the afternoon. In the end Dr. Yu saved my tooth without any complication. Parking was easy, all the other medical staff were professional and friendly, and the office will accommodate emergency matters if you let them know. read more

I'm writing this on behalf of my mother who had a root canal done here this year. She had gotten a root canal here 5 years ago and it went fine (only took about half an hour). This time, there were issues. The dental assistant instructed her to use the bite block which is not unreasonable, but when she expressed her discomfort with it, Dr. Yu dismissed her concerns and insisted she keep using it. The procedure took 2 hours this time. It was longer than the first time because there was a crown that needed to be removed. The issue is that even when Dr. Yu left the room (multiple times) and no work was being done on her teeth, they refused to remove the bite block to give her jaws a break. It has been over 2 months since this appointment, and my mother says she still feels pain deep in her lower left molars where the block was. This isn't normal, and we suspect the prolonged usage of the bite block caused the damage, as there was no pain in that area before the procedure. When a patient expresses discomfort, a real professional would address it accordingly, not just downplay and ignore it. There is a serious issue when a patient leaves with more problems than they started with. I would like to give Dr. Yu the benefit of the doubt, since I don't believe he had bad intentions, but negligence that caused someone such long-term damage is unacceptable. read more

I'm writing this in the parking lot as I just finished my root canal operation. I'm still amazed how it went. Have you heard of a root canal with no pain? I didn't believe it... As I was getting worked on, I kept waiting for the pain to happen... it never came and he said "we're done" I'm like what? What happened to the part where you shove stuff down my roots and hurts a lot? He still shove stuff in the roots but I guess I didn't feel it lol I saw the two replacement root looking things in the X-Ray I'm like wow. I saw some people complain about wait times or whatever, I showed up at my appointment time and got taken in right away. Even if I had to wait an hour I wouldn't care, THERES NO PAIN!! My fears have gone away. My deep cleaning hurt more than this. Anyways time to go home. I had a dental abscess festering on my gum for over a year, which I kept dismissing as a cold sore. I slowly realized my previous root canal was throbbing every time I touched it so I realized this is a dental issue. Nearly every place I called had insane consultation fees or didn't have an available slot until a whole month later. The receptionist was extremely helpful, had a much earlier time slot, and made sure my insurance information went through smoothly. Dr. Yu himself took care of me; he did a very thorough and transparent consultation and operated on my tooth on the same day. He saw that my previous root canal was very infected, which startled me but he also assured me that it could be a lot worse. He was very considerate in making sure I wasn't uncomfortable and the whole process was painless. (Of course it's always going to be expected to feel a level of anxiousness when your whole mouth is open for a long period of time. Can't be helped). Once the operation was done, he did a thorough evaluation of what they did and a detailed rundown of what to do next. There was definitely some pain once the numbness went away, but by the next day my abscess was no longer throbbing and so far seems like it's healing. About 2 years ago I had the worst pain and I went to two dentists. They both didn't find anything and disregarded my pain. I finally went to my regular dentist and he referred me to Dr. Yu. Apparently, I had a cavity and a chipped tooth. I needed a root canal. I don't see how that is even remotely possible. I never eat sweets :) It probably doesn't help in order for me to go into the dentist office as an exchange for my visit, I demand a bag of candies upon leaving the office visit. Now, I have done it to myself. This is not looking good as my tooth is hurting pretty bad and my regular dentist can't help me. I was referred to Dr. Yu by my dentist from Perfect Smile. Dr. Yu is an amazing Endodontist. I reached out to this center via Yelp message to get an appointment. Dr. Yu not only responded quickly and on a holiday. He allowed me to make an appointment, which fits my schedule On the day of my appointment, I received a call from his office requesting me to come in one hour earlier. I was a little upset as I had already rearranged my work schedule. This is a late notice and I told them to cancel and forget about it. I later got a call back to just come on in. I think the front desk does need some assistance in customer service This center is inside the San Gabriel Professional Center. The front parking is only for the disable individuals. You will need to drive to the back of the building to get additional parking. The office is on the 2nd floor After meeting with Dr Yu, who is very professional and friendly. I felt comfortable to proceed with my root canal procedure. I was told they needed to call my insurance for authorization. I was then scheduled to return 2 weeks later after my initial consult. Again on the return visit, his office called the same day asking me to come in one hour earlier. This is really becoming a nuisance from this place. I was again upset and told them to cancel my appointment. The front desk then call back and said come on in. I am not sure what is wrong with his staff about changing schedule last minute Upon arrival, Dr. Yu was doing another root canal on another patient. I waited 1.5 hours until it was my turn. I am really not sure why I left my work early to come just so I can wait. It is very apparant that they double booked. I think we can schedule better. I was really ready to leave as there was no explanation/communication to patient. Once it was my turn, no one apologize or acknowledge the long wait. As Dr. Yu was ready to perform this procedure, I asked how much is this as I don't want to get a $1000 bill later. He then sent me to the front desk for further explanation. This is definitely a waste of time as I have been waiting for 1.5 hours already. Could we have done this earlier??? The front desk said "we talk about this last time". This really enraged me as "no we didn't. you didn't even call my insurance yet". She then quickly acknowledged that "oh you are probably right". This has been a frustrating process with this office. They need some system or organization in place Once I paid for my service, the procedure itself was smooth, quick and not as painful as anticipated. Dr. Yu appears to be very skillful in his field. Anticipate about 1.5 hours for this procedure I woke up the next day with chipmunk cheeks/jaw. I couldn't chew and was in pain. This is not good as I am always needing to eat. I was hanger on 100. I had to call his office for help. Dr. Yu was able to call me back quickly and call in for medications (antibiotic and pain). I wish I was given prescription prior to leaving his office Overall, Dr. Yu is awesome and likely a pioneer in his field. His front desk/office staff could use a lot more help in communication/scheduling/payment explanation. I don't think his staff are very competent professionals. They can barely handle normal and basic office work. I think if I was not in so much pain, I would have never put myself through these non sense with his staff. HIs staff doesn't appear to respect patient's time and schedule. There is no purpose of making appointment if they don't honor your time.I recommend Dr. Yu be more mindful of his staff/actions as I am sure he is losing business by the tactics I endured. Have done two root canals with Dr. Yu and felt very well taken care of each time. Both times were root canals on teeth at the very back, which I believe are difficult. The second time I was recommended endodontists closer to me, but I decided I felt more comfortable coming to Dr. Yu. He was also very up front about possible alternative treatments for my second tooth as I had waited just a little too long to get the root canal, but I opted to go ahead and try the root canal. Best place to go for a root canal! Very professional and painless.

Two years ago, I developed a hairline fracture of my right upper molar. My general dentist in San Marino referred me to a different endodontist in Pasadena for root canal consultation. That specialist told me I didn't need a root canal, to use sensodyne toothpaste and "massage" my jaw. I had already been using sensodyne for years and thought the "jaw massage" advice to be odd, but didn't think much of it. I saw my general dentist in December, 2020 for gum swelling and pain around the left lower molar, x-rays and cleaning. My dentist gave me a clean bill of dental health and there was no new or further damage to the fractured molar. A few weeks ago, the fractured molar cracked. I went to my dentist the next available day. He pulled the cracked portion of the tooth easily and indicated it needed to be extracted and replaced with an implant. He applied a partial crown and sent me to an oral surgery group in Pasadena. No consideration or exploration was given to saving my tooth, whatsoever, even though it is a deeply rooted, uninfected molar. The oral surgeon I was sent to the same day decided to pull the molar while I was still awake. She brutalized me and shook my head violently. She hit my right shoulder in an archaic, medieval attempt to "transfer the pain" ( like a Charlie Chaplin or 3 Stooges movie) and said the procedure would be over soon; that it was like "childbirth"... and I would experience "pressure" and not to worry. She then indicated she needed to cut into my jaw bone with a drill ( while I was still awake and traumatized) and shot me with more Novocain. At that point, I told her to stop and said I would come back another day to be fully sedated for the procedure. Her office demanded full copay at that time, while I was terrified and traumatized. After giving them a check, I ran out of the office and explored the possibility of consulting with a reputable endodontist to see if the tooth could be salvaged, since the roots were so strong and firmly embedded in the jaw bone. I called my carrier, Delta Dental. They indicated I had the right to a second surgical opinion and can change primary dentists. I contacted another dentist in my area who highly recommended Dr. Yu. It was late in the afternoon and Dr. Yu answered his office phone! I told him what had transpired. He listened to my story and was very objective and honest. He scheduled an appointment a few days later for consultation to explore the possibility of salvaging my molar. Dr. Yu took x-rays and performed a through, methodical examination. The tooth is not sensitive or in pain. Based on state of the art x-rays, he indicated my root canal isn't wide or infected and the tooth can be salvaged with a crown, as the nerve is still covered by the existing enamel, which provides ample space to anchor an effective crown. I didn't need to undergo the pain and suffering, not to mention expense, the oral surgeon inflicted upon me. Dr. Yu was honest, straightforward and professional. He was extraordinarily considerate and exercised caution while gently examining my teeth and gums. He listened to my concerns and addressed all of them. He has an excellent chairside manner. We reviewed the x-rays he had taken as he explained my situation. He answered all of my questions in detail and provided information relevant to my case. He didn't rush me. I was extremely relieved after our appointment. My Delta Dental PPO covered the visit with a minimal copay. I highly recommend Dr. Yu, for his knowledge, compassion, consideration, candor and honesty, especially to anyone who has encountered past negative issues with other endodontists or requires a surgical opinion to save their original tooth. Many dentists feel it's easier (and more profitable) to simply extract teeth and replace them with implants. I appreciate his honesty and expertise. read more

BAIT AND SWITCH YIELDED APATHETIC AND BRUTAL TREATMENT WITH LASTING DAMAGE. I SHOULD HAVE WALKED OUT. 3/20/22. The staff was nice and tried to be helpful, but the endodontist was reckless and harmful. BAIT. Dr. Yu's EndoCare home page said, "The endodontic (root canal) specialty office of Dr. John Yu." Because of his reviews, I called Dr. Yu's office and made an appointment. SWITCH. At my appointment a day later, I was given a disclosure that said they use different people to do the treatment. Dr. Yu was not even in the office! That disclosure wasn't discussed when I made the appointment; I did not see it on EndoCare's website; and it was not in the patient forms that I requested in advance and completed before the appointment. I SHOULD HAVE WALKED OUT. With a growing dental problem, I felt trapped. That day, I had root canal work, but that was not nearly as painful as the continuous and avoidable pain from the endodontist's rough and abusive handling. As a result, I have been left with damage that was caused by the endodontist, which was not necessary and was not part of root canal treatment. UPDATE, 10/5/22: After more than six months, the pain and damage caused by the woman continues to be horrible. She injured a nerve and my jaw. read more

I had a consultation with Dr. Yu, I'm sure he's competent and good at root canals, but don't hesitate to get a 2nd opinion if you don't think it's necessary. My regular dentist Dr. Jeffrey Chen and Dr. Yu were so quick to push a root canal without exploring other options that it made me hesitant, especially since I clean regularly and hadn't had a cavity in a decade. I asked Dr. Yu if a root canal was absolutely necessary, he said to get it done as soon as possible. My partner pushed me to see another dentist before my scheduled root canal and I'm so glad I did. The 2nd dentist looked at my teeth and said it's just a cavity and if he filled it I shouldn't need a root canal. Then he pulled out Dr. Yu's report and read it to me and then said "the report isn't even that bad, I wonder why he's recommending a root canal." The 2nd dentist trimmed the gum cavity and filled it right there and I haven't had pain since then. Odd thing was I was talking to my coworkers who went to my regular dentist and he said he pushed a root canal with Dr. Yu too, and same story I recommended the 2nd dentist who just filled a cavity. So yea, do not hesitate to get a 2nd opinion if something doesn't feel right, in my line of work we try every conservative way to fix a pain before we recommend surgery and I think that should be for any invasive surgery. Was referred here by my dentist for a root canal. I showed up in the morning, filled out papers and waited for 20 minutes. They took a couple of X-rays and said I would need a root canal that would cost about $1300 but would have to reschedule for later that afternoon. I was unavailable in the afternoon and asked to reschedule for another day and Dr. Yu only comes in on Mondays and Tuesdays or something... And if I reschedule another day the root canal would then cost about $1500. I could only agree and rescheduled for the week after, which was today. I went in today and was ready to get my root canal done. Dr. Yu was not very gentle when giving me two shots, Ive never felt so much pinch. He then proceeded to open up my tooth and quickly covered it back up with a temporary filling and said it was not savable. No root canal needed, I would need to get it extracted by my original dentist, and started suggesting about implants to me. I said no and went to check out at the front desk. They handed me a bill for $500! I showed my discontent because I'm down $500 for their consultation when I could have just paid to get the tooth pulled. The lady immediately gave me a $100 discount, which was great! But honestly, it just reconfirmed they know they are overcharging or they messed up on something like an inexperienced diagnosis. Dr. Yu is also really young, I am beginning to doubt his Endodontics consultative advice because i totally wasted a lot of my time and money in this office. Not only did I pay this office, I have to go back to my dentist and pay him another $200 to extract this tooth that wasn't even bothering me to begin with.
