Fortunately, I didn't go as far down the rabbit hole as a lot of the other reviewers, and much of that is thanks to those that left reviews to warn me. Thanks, guys.
I was referred to this company by Home Adviser. HA has never led me astray before, and so I booked my appointment to have them give me a free estimate before I checked the reviews. Once I got off the phone and checked Yelp, I considered it unlikely I'd do business with these people, yet once in awhile a company that's been beaten up by bad reviews will steer things around to salvage a reputation. But in this case? Not so much.
The appointment was supposed to be for a window between 3-5 PM. At 2:42, my phone rang. The caller told me in a disapproving voice that their representative was waiting outside the gate wondering if I was going to let him in. I said that if he had been at my front door at 3:00 and rung the doorbell or knocked on the door, I'd be happy to do so, but as it was, of course I had no idea he was there.
And he wasn't.
Actually, he was down at the bottom of the hill parked in front of my neighbor. The car had no insignia that I could see and it wasn't until he hollered, "I'm down here, Ma'am," that I even figured out who it was. The wind was cold and I had no coat on, but he took his time. I have two beagles, friendly little guys with no sense at all regarding traffic, so I had the puppy by his collar and the senior dog at my feet. Finally I realized that the guy was standing outside my gate, still waiting for me to let him in. I am disabled, and to bend over and grab my dog's collar for very long is quite painful. To simultaneously reach the gate latch is impossible. I told him I was holding my dog and to open the gate himself. He offered a recommendation that I "put your dogs away."
Oh hell no. First of all, they're not mean; second of all, that's the sort of thing someone says when they intend harm (I fell for it many years ago and never since then); third, I was already pissed at the way the visit had begun and it seemed to me that if this is how the company starts a sales call, how might they treat me once it's in the bag? So I told him the dogs were staying, and he informed me that he was phoning the home office to let them know I wouldn't put my dogs away.
It occurred to me that perhaps what he and his partner really wanted was to start their weekend early.
I countered with a suggestion that we cancel the appointment, and he agreed that was a good idea before the sentence was hardly out of my mouth.
When reviewers say this company is rude, they aren't taking offense lightly. This sort of approach might fly in a small community where there's only one large contractor available, but not here, not now, and not with me. If these fellows were my students, I would assign them detention, but as it stands, I am rid of them. I will give the work to the contractor that came this morning, or to one of the two contractors coming for bids next week. I'm retired, and I don't have to dive into a business relationship just to get back to work. I am old, I am experienced, and I will never do any kind of business with this company.
Again, to other reviewers: thanks. read more
