Love it here! Not really a place to sit and eat, there's only a few spots and it's always really, really busy. Take out only pretty much. Close enough to a couple little parks and of course Flushing Meadows if you need to sit somewhere (during nicer weather). Empanadas are declicious. The green sauce is so good! I love the variety of emapanada wrapper selections, and the huge variety of fillings. I wish you could mix and match (or they said that on the menu to let you know). The workers are very nice and fluent in English and Spanish. They'll answer any questions you have. These are made fresh so be prepared to wait at least 10-20 minutes! read more

The best. Whenever I'm in this part of Queens (very close to Hall of Science, Queens Zoo and Playground for All Children) I have to hit them up. This is hands down my favorite empanada spot! I always get at least 4 when I go and two of them have to be the Hawaiian and the jalapeño and cheese empanadas. For most empanadas you have a choice of organic, flour or corn crusts. The business is rather small with only a couple stools at the counter and 2 tables. The empanadas here are so freakin' delicious!!! They have several choices of flour for the empanada shell, along with delicious fillings on their menu. My favorites are the pesto-tomato-mozzarella and spinach-cauliflower empanadas. The best part about this place is that the empanadas are cheap/reasonably priced, as food from Queens should be, yet taste delicious. The only drawback is that the interior is very cramped. But to make up for that most customers take advantage of their pick-up option; just call ahead for your order and pick it up by the time you get there. But today, I ordered something that I thought was something else (chicken & cheese empanada in organic flour but I usually get white) it was for my boyfriend & when I brought it back in 2 minutes later they gave me a hard time saying they'll give me one empanada & I'll pay for the other I said no, that they should cater to what the customer needs/orders & she had an attitude right away saying it's not her fault which I understand but regardless customers is what keeps them going so if we're wrong or not they should be accomodating. I haven't had much experience with empanadas in particular before stopping by here, but it was worth the trek. While the wait took a few minutes, the empanadas came out very fresh and hot. The skin was crispy, and the filling very flavorful (tried the ground beef, and ham and cheese). If you ask for hot sauce, you get it in a cute little shot-like narrow glass. The place is extremely small so eating in might be a challenge. Finally, their ice cream on a stick is worth trying--sort of like a popsicle but creamy. They have quite a few interesting flavors too. It's all about the corn-flour empanadas. My brother told me that when he goes here he gets "one of each." Now I understand why. It is impossible to pick a favorite. Beef. Pork. Chicken. Shrimp. Broccoli. Codfish. The outer shell is so perfect that you could probably stuff it with used tissues and it would still be delicious. The staff here is pretty friendly and accommodating. I only tried the white flour vegetable and also chicken empanadas so my review is based only on those two. Okay, the vegetable empanadas were bland and dry. The crust was pretty tasty and crispy. The chicken empanada was well seasoned but again dry. I guess I am accustomed to eating empanadas from Don Coqui which are nicely seasoned and the filling is not dry as the meat is cooked in a tasty sauce. I must say the green dipping sauce is very good and helps provide a sort of sauce to the otherwise dry empanadas. In my opinion this place is OK. I wouldn't make a trip out to Corona just for these empanadas but I also might venture into another restaurant if I were in the neighborhood. Empanadas are made with corn flour, whole grain or white flour texture. My all time favorite is the platanos maduro con queso/sweet plantains with cheese and the Hawaiian. Perhaps my expectations were too high before trying this popular empanadas spot in my neighborhood, but I have to admit I was a little disappointed with this place. For about half a year, I've been trying empanadas at many different spots in the Elmhurst/Corona area so I have a lot to compare to this joint. I definitely appreciate the variety you can get here. They have different shells and lots of different fillings. Even fish. The regular ones are only $1.50 a pop. That's a great price. So the other day, we got a variety of the regular corn shelled ones for a get-together we were going to. We got the ground beef, shredded beef, fish, turkey and chicken. I only got to try the fish one, but I did not taste any fish in there. I tasted a lot of potato. Maybe this is a different style than I'm used to or like, but I don't think potato should be the main ingredient in an empanada. It should be whatever filling it's supposed to be. I heard similar potato comments from other people who tasted the other kinds. Here are a couple of areas of improvement for EC. Add more main ingredient to each empanada. That'll make a world of difference. Also, we got 15 empanadas. I think a dozen should come with a discount. More incentive to buy more. I will continue to try other empanada spots but I will be back to try their other shells and flavors. This place is worth another chance. read more
