We came here on a whim after passing another empanada place that had a very disappointing selection and we inadvertently found ourselves a new favorite empanada place. The food was so fresh and hot, and the ice creams they also serve were delicious and refreshing!! I tried chicken and potato and chicken and cheese, both were incredibly tasty and so so nice and fresh. My partner had jalapeño and cheese and swears by it now. We also had Nutella and banana which was a hot and tasty treat before we ate our ice cream. A couple of people were raving about how these were the best empanadas in the city when we were there, and frankly, I'm inclined to believe them. So yummy here! My husband and I stopped by on a Friday for a quick snack. We had to street park but it was easy to find a couple spots open around the neighborhood. We chose to eat in and the place is small but was continuously busy with customers eating in, picking up etc. We got the bacalao with corn flour, chicken/ cheese and chorizo and cheese in grain flour, and ham/ cheese in regular flour. We loved the texture of the whole grain shell. It had such a good flavor but didn't over power the stuffing. It took about 10 minutes for us to get the empanadas and they cook everything fresh so they were all piping hot and so good with the cold green sauce. After the Tour De Queens bike ride, a few friends and I were famished and were in search of good grub that was near Flushing Meadows Park because our rumbly little tummy were in rebellion of us going any further than a few blocks for food.Upon the recommendation of one of the friends and a quick check to see what was the general consensus of Yelp for said place which had an average of 4.5 stars at the time, we rode off to Empanadas Cafe. This is a tiny little corner establishment that could hold only a few customers inside at a time. Of course there were other customers in there besides us taking up space but not that much more. There are three different empanadas sold here. Corn flour, white flour, and organic empanadas. All of which have different combinations of stuffing inside. No matter which one you choose, they are all spectacular tasting, some just more so than others. What? You want some suggestions? Ok, try a few of these to start: White flour empanada with Sweet Plantain and Mozzarella. Corn flour empanada with Shrimp. Organic emapanada with ground chicken and cheese. Organi.... Wait a minute.... why am I even bothering with recommendations? These things are so small and cheap that you could easily buy more than a few at a time to try out in one visit. The prices of the empandas range from only $1.50 to only $2 for the most expensive ones. Yes, I am including all of the organic selections in this price range. Say what? If you are in the mood for something sweet, they even have two dessert empanadas here. Guava and Cheese, and Nutella Chocolate and Sliced Bananas. Those are only $1.25 each. But if it's a hot sunny day out there, choose their home made South American Ice pops instead for dessert. You could tell they were homemade because they are frozen in cheap plastic little clear cups that you used for picnics. These are AMAZING. They have a good variety of flavors and all 4 that I got to try were all delicious. A lady customer raved about the oreo cookie flavor non stop when I was deciding what to order but I felt like being fruity that day and I'm not talking about being crazy. Crazy is a given. The fruit flavors taste almost exactly like you are eating a soft version of the fruit that you selected. The guava and passion fruit flavors were oh so good. The tamarind wasn't bad either. These icy pops are $2 each. You know what? Hell with the eating the ice pops when it's hot outside. I'll eat these in the coldest day of winter.. while sitting on the snow if I had to. Bananas for Empanadas I first started with the spinach and ricotta which was stuffed generously but may have need a second or two more in in the fryer because it as so thick the cheese wasn't as hot as I'd have liked it. But, it was still delicious. I had the plantains and cheese in white flour. It had a light flaky crust and the ooey-gooey cheese went well with the fresh sweet plantains. They aren't cheap with the cheese either. I never had a multigrain empanada but I'm happy that I did. I decided to go with the chicken and cheese which was amazing. The savory cheesiness of the chicken filling was a perfect marriage of flavors with the nuttiness of the multigrain shell. It's a tiny place with seating for maybe 6 to 8 at most, so best if you are prepared to take it out. Also, it can get crowded and maybe you could call in your order before you get there. Must be easier that standing around for 10 minutes. Also, the place was very clean and didn't have the 'greasy smell' that many fried food places have. I loved it. I found this cafe about 10 years ago. It's on a great location and it's near Queen zoo. They have a variety of empanadas. Before pandemic, they offered turkey and cheese empanadas, that my husband and son loved. However, they no longer offer it, for whatever reason. Not to worry, there are many other options. For example, sweet plantains with cheese, vegetable, beef and cheese or just plain cheese are some of my families favorite. Ham and cheese- salty and cheesy. Shredded chicken- they used mashed potatoes as a filler but it was still good and flavorful. Spinach and ricotta- never thought a veggie empanada could taste better than a meat empanada. Dipping them in the green sauce made them all taste even better. Banana and chocolate- tastes just like you'd imagine it to be. It's a classic combo. Strawberries and cream ice cream- I thought this was ice cream but I looked at the ingredients and the base was actually yogurt. They use Splenda as a sweetener which I normally wouldn't like, but they had big chunks of frozen strawberries on it which made it taste so good and fresh. I cant believe that I have gone here so many times and have yet to write a review for this spot. This is one of those places that is not overall the best experience when you come here but the empanadas are so amazing that jumping through the hoops and hurdles is completely worth it. The first part of this mission you need to conquer is PARKING. Quite frankly, there is no parking in this whole neighborhood and especially around the shop. Listen...you might get desperate like I have and park quick and block a hydrant, a driveway or cross walk. Its ok though in the end because you wont wait that long and you stay close by the car. 2nd part of this mission is getting inside the cafe and ordering. It is really small in there and it gets packed. A couple of tables and a few seats...gotta have perfect timing to get a table and eat there. Good luck! You are so close to ordering but could be 3 or 4 deep to the counter between people ordering and waiting. Try and get the ladies behind the counter's attention. They are going to look at you like you are the biggest idiot in the world.....its ok they look like that at everyone. lol hahaha You put in the order and now you wait ..... You have to do the dance between waiting on the empanadas and making sure your car is ok outside. I check back and forth to the car just in case I need to move it and back to the food and your name being called. They call your name and you pay and take your empanadas. They have different meat combinations (chicken and potato, ground beef, ground chicken, chorizo, cheese, etc etc) with different shells of (corn flour, multi grain and white flour) to choose from as well....and I can say that I dont usually like multi grain anything...and these are really good. They have 2 different sauces to put on them...try them both! The crazy part is that each empanada is in the ball park of $2.00 .....its crazy that you can get all of these different flavors and it wont be much money at all. Empanadas and South American Ices is what Empanadas Cafe specializes in. Most come for the empanadas and for good reason. The menu is extensive and can be overwhelming for those venturing here for the first time. Three types of flour can be chosen along with a variety of fillings, with about 30 empanadas to choose from. The three flours consist of: - Corn Flour = Probably my favorite of the bunch, it's a smooth and crispy texture. It does not try to overwhelm the ingredients inside, making for the perfect compliment to any filling. - Organic Flour = At first looks, these appear healthy in its textured dark brown, rough and nutty exterior. It's no where as crispy as the corn flour, and I did find this shell to be somewhat overpowering the ingredients inside, so much so that I really tried to enjoy the organic aspect of this shell but it was just too much for my palate. - White Flour = The empanadas in this group are the largest of the bunch, approximately 20% larger. The exterior looks like a deep-fried wonton, with the bubbly/crater shell. But to my surprise, it wasn't greasy, but actually somewhat crumbly with a pastry-like texture. As for the empanadas that I tried: - White Flour - Pavo Con Queso - Ground Turkey & Cheese ($1.75) - If you notice closely, the work TURKEY is stamped along the edge of the empanada. This empanada was moist, flavorful, and you can really taste the freshness of the turkey as opposed to the processed flavor I was expecting. - Corn Flour - Carne y Queso - Ground Beef & Cheese ($1.50) - Good flavors from the beef, not too cheesy. A satisfying empanada worth trying. - Organic Flour - Chorizo - Spicy Sausage & Potato ($2.00) - Bits of slightly spicy chorizo are mixed with a creamy puree-like mashed potato. I really wanted to like this one, but the organic flour somewhat overpowered the chorizo and potato making it dull and bordering on flavorless. - Corn Flour - Carne - Shredded Beef ($1.50) - The meat was slightly pulley, though not as stringy as pulled pork. The beef was tender, but it could have used a bit more flavor, such as a richer sauce. - White Flour - Hawaiiana - Ham, Pineapple, & Cheese ($1.75) - I wouldn't go so far as ordering this one out of curiosity. You really have to have the urge and liking for the ham and pineapple combination in order to like this one. The sweetness of the pineapple contrasted perfectly against the subtle saltiness of the thin-sliced deli ham. I am probably one of the few who can appreciate this combination. - Corn Flour - Pollo - Shredded Chicken ($2.00) - Yum! The creaminess of the corn paired nicely with the shredded chicken. It was very enjoyable and far from salty. - Organic Flour - Carne - Ground Beef & Mixed Vegetables ($2.00) - The ground beef was moist, but all I really really taste from this was the chopped bell peppers that completely dominated any other ingredient. Then came the bland organic flour which made this one of my least favorite empanadas. - Corn Flour - Camarones - Shrimp ($2.00) - I didn't know what to expect from this one. What I got was a paste-like texture mixed with mashed potatoes and bits of shrimp. After all that protein from the meat, you could really taste the shrimp flavor of this one. Some butter could have a nice addition with two ingredients that scream for butter all on its own. Then comes the little containers of green sauce, one for every 2 empanadas. Additional sauce can be ordered for $0.25 each. This cilantro, avocado and oil concoction was a great compliment to the empanadas. It's a bit difficult trying to dip an empanada into these containers so I found myself happily pouring the green sauce right into the empanadas. Truly addictive and it made all the empanadas several time better. If you're in the area and considering it, make the trip out to try Empanadas Cafe. It's cheap, it's portable and easy to eat, and it's filling. The large crowds will clearly show how popular this establishment is. My curiosity got the best of me. Went ahead and finally checked out this place yesterday. Don't be fooled by it's size or location. Once you step inside, it's like a whole other world. Although tiny, it's quite quaint. Also comfortable if you're lucky enough to snag a seat. There's signs above the counter explaining what to expect right off the bat. Super-duper clean, with an A grade to boot. Nevermind the cuteness though, how's the food? These empanadas are the best I've ever had, bar none. I had one corn flour codfish, one white flour cheese, and finished it off with a dessert patty of guava and cheese. Each one was pretty solid. My personal favorite being the guava and cheese mix. If you're dining in, the empanadas will be served on a wooden platter, along with a green sauce condiment. I didn't try the organic wheat flour ones, but that's for next time. The best part is that there's both meat and vegetarian options. Another perk? If you don't feel like cooking tonight, supposedly you can order some to go, then reheat the empanadas at home. I went to this place for the first time yesterday and I really dig it. I had the Banana Nutella Chocolate Empanada and it was just awesome. Honestly, just one if not the best desert type of food I have ever had. The chocolate they used was to die for. It was like having a dark chocolate brownie melted down into fudge and then blended with real pieces of banana all inside of a pastry. The most amazing thing about this pastry is it is deep fried, but you would never be able to tell (no greasy fingers.....) In terms of an eating establishment, this place is pretty much a takeout spot. These are the best empanadas I have had in my search in both Brooklyn and Queens. I haven't had the full scope of the menu yet but everytime i add a new flavor i am not dissappointed. Delicious empanadas made with corn, white or whole grain flour. Tried the shredded beef and potato, pork and potato, spinach and ricotta, breakfast with egg, bacon, ham and cheese and ground beef. Each empanada was packed with filling so satisfying. Choice of mild (Tasted like thousand island dressing) or spicy green sauce- could be spicier though. These empanada were so tasty and so fresh. Not oily at all. The ladies working there were a little (Whats the word..) taking photos and pulling mama down so often, holiday time. They were friendly though and the empanadas were so good. The *low carb* beef and cheese was my favorite. Tried several different kinds. read more

Ohhhh.myyyyy.goshhhhh. This place is the best. We love empanadas & have tried several especially in Florida where we live. We thought we'd had excellent ones in Florida, but the ones here at Empanadas Cafe are beyond belief excellent. They are in a league all their own. Now we realize we've not been having ones that great in Florida...lol. I had a carne & potato...cheese & jalapeño....& a guava & cheese. Not only are they big with awesome filling, but the dough varieties they are cooked in are wonderful. There is corn dough, flour dough, whole wheat dough, etc. this place is a solid 5-star. read more

Delicious little spot! I usually shy away from anything other than the white flour shell but thankfully I decided to give them all a fair chance here and here are my reviews! Spinach and ricotta (white flour shell) - very generously filled as they all are. They supplied the perfect ratio of cheese and spinach. The spinach was chopped up just the perfect size too. Plantain and Cheese (white shell) - Drool! The duo of sweet and savory was perfect. Jalapeño and cheese (organic brown shell) - the shell was a little crunchy but nice n soft at the same time. Love the taste of the jalapeño! Chicken and cheese (organic brown shell) - yummy! the cheese added a perfect moist texture. The flavor was so good! The chicken and beef empanadas were okay. They weren't as good as I expected, they weren't as flavorful and moist but luckily their green sauce is banging and made it good to eat =) read more
