Avoid this place at all costs. On December 19 2023 I took my car to get the two front tires changed and the rear two to be balanced. When I pulled off the lot the left rear tire almost fell off of my car. The mechanic who was working did not do his due diligence to BOLT the tire onto the car. I had to pull over and call the place to send someone to fix it. I was 2 streets away and it took them 15 minutes to come while I was stranded In the freezing cold. The guy came and fixed my tire and when I came back to the establishment the owner did not want to give me a refund for my money. The owner lied to me and started giving me the run around and said "no he just forgot to bolt the lug nuts all the way" that is a lie. I retraced my steps and I couldn't find a single lug nut on the streets. He was very nonchalant about the situation as if it is an everyday occurrence/minor mistake. My life almost could've been gone if I didn't stop the tire from rolling off my car. DO NOT COME HERE. The workers do not know what they are doing and the owner isn't holding them accountable, it's a giant liability and safety issue, HUMAN LIVES ARE AT STAKE. My car needed an oil change and I was concerned about a metal piece loose underneath. The people were friendly enough and the manager only charged me for the oil change, as the loose piece was only cosmetic damage and just needed a zip tie. This was great. The problem was that this TOOK 3 HOURS. Prior to coming in, I called explaining the work I wanted done for my car, and asked if it was not too busy as I could not afford to wait. I was told they were not busy, it was no problem, and I could come in right away. So I came in, filled out paperwork, and was told to wait. An hour went by and I realized my car had not even been touched yet, so I went searching for the manager. When I found him, he told me it would be another 15/20 minutes until he can take a look at my car. In reality, 45 minutes had passed (105 minutes in total) until they finally took my car in the workshop. All in all, I had arrived at 3pm and ended up leaving just before 6pm. My time is extremely valuable, which is why I had made sure to call ahead of time and ask if it would take long. Customer service is vital. Effort should be made to ensure the customer is given an accurate approximation of time to wait. Effort should also be made to inform the customer of the amount of time the procedure itself would take. Had I known it would take that long, I would have came back another day. No problem. In summation, If you are looking to get work done on your automobile, by all means come to this business. Just make sure you have several hours of free time before coming. read more

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, one of us is an asshole. Decide for yourself... About 15 years ago my Hyundai had a minor transmission problem. I went to several shops that told me it would cost btwn $800-$1000 to fix. Went to Emil (they also have a full service dept) and was told he knew exactly what the problem was, that it was common with Hyundais, he had the parts and could fix it for $250. Awesome! Got the car back quickly, drove away, and about 3 miles out, the transmission went - completely. Wouldn't budge out of 1st gear. Called them up immediately, they said no worries, just bring it back. I drove 5 mph back to Emil's... they took the car, and charged me an additional $1000 to rebuild my transmission. I was infuriated, but really had no choice as I now figured it was either go with them, or have to replace the transmission entirely. Years passed and I'm a forgive and forget kind of guy. Went back with a slow leak about a year ago, they fixed it quickly, were friendly and I left happy. Several months ago my wife's tire pressure started going down on the dashboard diagnostics. I had her pull into a lot as I realized we probably had a flat and caught it quickly. I jacked up the car, threw the donut on and headed to Emil's. We caught them right before closing time. He checked the tire and told us it was a rare tire (the car is new Mazda), and if unable to fix would cost us $250. He also said he just sold his last one. 10 minutes later they come back with the tire showing us a bunch of rubber beads inside. They said this showed that the tire was no longer good and would have to be replaced. He assured us it was safe in the meantime to drive on the donut, and could get the tire first thing in the morning. He also assured us that we wouldn't be able to find the tire anywhere else (due to its rarity). We shrugged, thanked him, he didn't charge us anything and we left. We immediately called the next nearest tire shop (which was luckily still open). They checked their inventory, told us they had the tire, new, in stock and that the price was $165. We headed over. They looked at the tire and said, "Let us check this before popping on a new one." They came back with fully inflated tire and told us the tire was fine. It's been months and 1000s of miles since, and the tire is still fine. My assumption. Had I been desperate enough (or Emil had the tire in stock), we would have been charged $250, we would have left our old tire with him, and he would have been able to resell it used. I'm not leaving this review for revenge, or to cause damage. I'll even STILL give the benefit of the doubt here. I'll come back to Yelp a year from now and if there are no other new, similar reviews, I'll remove this one. If he's scamming people however it should be known. If he makes honest mistakes, I get it too... again, you be the judge. For now, I say be very cautious if choosing Emil's. read more

This place is amazing, I called to check if they repair tire with screw in it filled with nitrogen, yes I took ride to their shop, because I had no appointment I had to wait little bit, but the whole repair took maybe 15-20 minutes and I was out and happy. I called customer service in the morning and ordered 2 new tires,they told me 199 each ,plus I asked about balancing they said 20$. I asked if bill will be 418$ they said yes,I ordered the tires. Later on they called they said it's ready I can come in and get it installed. To find a good mechanic is hard to fine a honest mechanic is even harder. I brought my car in for an oil change when it was up on the lift he saw that I needed a ball joint changed. He recommended I do it right away because it was a dangerous situation. I had him do it and the next day I was out driving and I thought I dropped my transmission. I called Ralph He said to bring it in and he would look at it. An hour and half later he said come pick up your car it was all fixed. He apologized but he said when the guy did the job yesterday on the ball joint he screwed up. He could've told me anything and charged me Hundreds of dollars but he didn't and charge me nothing and the next time I went to him I got an oil change and he didn't charge me anything because of the inconvenience. My husband took the car in a few weeks ago. They couldn't take care of it that day but said the car was driveable. Hubby took it back a few days later. They did fix the problem. A few days ago I noticed that they took off the thin, slim license plate holder and replaced it with one of their own, with their name. Plate holders are illegal in NYC. I had purchased, and installed, a very thin one to 'fix' a bent plate. Now I have to take his off and go buy my own again. I am VERY ticked about this. It took them no time at all to find out it was just the battery. They put one in for very little charge and he was rolling in about two hours. It only took that long because people were ahead of him. Family's been coming here for over 20 years. I haven't owned a car myself that hasn't been to Emil's. The new location definitely seems to have been a good move as it can handle the unbelievable amounts of people that trust their cars to this family business. For the times that I'll choose to sit and wait while my cars are worked on, the WIFI definitely helps make the wait pleasant. With that said, if you're impatient, or rather, not willing to wait for a job done right, then this would probably not be the place for you. As an earlier poster said, this place is incredibly busy for a reason, and honestly, the turn around time for the volume they handle is actually impressive. Having been to other places, in the past (whether it's cause I moved out of NY for a while or for an emergency where I couldn't get my car to them) prices are competitive (to be fair, I pretty much stopped looking for second opinions and all that Jazz because it always ended up being wasted gas, time, and my breath). The times where the prices are higher--I'll gladly pay that marginal premium for the competent, cordial service I get there, not to mention all the times they saved me from paying hundreds to thousands of dollars in unnecessary repairs. Ralph is a straight shooter, and he still impresses me sometimes with the way he proves that he knows what he's doing--it's uncanny. Please, Yelp, make it possible to give half-star reviews if you can't give zero. Or how about negative stars? Because Emil's doesn't deserve even one star, since they're so absolutely awful. Twice I've gone to Emil's because (1) they're 6 blocks from my house and (2) they're open on Sundays. The first time was to replace a tire that couldn't be saved (I already knew that). So Emil recommended tires and put them on - but of course, not just one tire: I needed two for the rear to keep the treads even. My naivety and stupidity made me believe him. Well, about six months after that, I'm in Sears because there's something wrong with the tires. Turns out the tires were OLD and of such poor quality that they were about to burst! When even the people at Sears are telling you that you got sh###y tires, you know you did. To replace Emil's bad service cost me $700 in new tires (to replace all 4 because the bad rear tires were putting more pressure on my front tire ... ahh, sportscars....) Anyways, I let years go by before I trusted Emil's. When I did, it was because I needed an inspection done, it was the Sunday before my tags expired. I knew they'd find trouble with the brakes, so it didn't surprise me. Their cost was reasonable (I already have two garages that charged the same rate). I got my inspection sticker and brakes fixed. Well, three months later, my car's burning and I'm squealing anytime I come to a stop. Took my car to a dealer (because my car was really effed up and really had no choice if I wanted the right parts) and they tell me that "whoever did the last repairs to your brakes left the calipers down and so that burned out your brake discs AND pads AND your car's misaligned." Which is EXACTLY what I guessed, because it only smelled like my car was about to explode. And that'll be $2K to fix. FRIGGING FRACKING FIBBLEY GIBLETS!!! NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER AGAIN!!!!! Really? When I'm smart enough to know before going to a shop that the calipers were left down and the mechanic confirms it, that makes me smarter than any of the so-called "mechanics" at Emil's. You had to have driven the car to park it in your lot, and you didn't notice that before I did? Emil's make me think I don't need to ever go to auto repair school - I could read a book and do a better job of repairing my own car than these dipwads. The owner's son might be friendly, but their prices aren't all that great. And for the price you pay, you get low-quality products and ever lower-quality mechanics working on your car. This will teach me to NEVER doubt my instincts. My regular mechanic is a quiet guy, but his prices are in line with average for my neighborhood, and he'll tell me what he can and can't do and then recommend other places that can cover me. My father-in-law does a lot of business in this part of Brooklyn and referred me to Emil's. I'm glad he did. Ralph, the proprietor, is a salt of the earth, stand-up guy. He calls it how he sees it, and doesn't try to fleece his customers. I went in to get new tires and have a general diagnostic check. They ended up encouraging me to use my spare (I have a Jeep, so it's the same as the regular tires) as a new one and to only buy three new tires. That way, I could use the one currently on the car in the best condition and convert it to my spare, all to save some money. I appreciated the honesty and great service I received. I wish I can give this shop a 0 star rating! This place is not so honest and over-priced. This shop is not a specialist to start with. As a matter of fact, repair shop of this kind of lousy to average quality is a dime a dozen throughout NYC! 3 years ago, I went in to repair a broken water pump on a 1991 Camry just because I didn't want to risk a 4 mile drive to my own mechanic. I was charged close to $700 for the job. Are you kidding me? Somehow they even screwed up the timing belt tensioner and the car was never the same afterwards. Fast forward 3 years, I tried them again for tire mounting/balancing, was quoted $15 for balancing and $10 for mounting. Wait a minute, i could have gone to tire shops along 65th street at Sunset park for same service at $16 per tire. 50% over regular rate? What kind of shop is this? You think we are all ignorant folks? Also bumped into another walked on customer for 4 wheel alignment. He told me the price was $95. Say what? As of 9/13, the going rate for this job was $75 Also observed that the technicians are not too careful. They managed to forgot to put 2 of my wheel caps on until I asked them 'Where are they'? While I was waiting, I overheard that another customer complained about having his license plate being put on upside down. The hourly rate they charge is not much less than dealers anyway! When I asked why they charge so much, Ralph just shrugged and said: 'This is the going rate in this neighborhood'. What kind of B.S. is this? Also, apparently if you are a Jewish/Russian customer, they charge you a discounted price, but if you are not, then be prepared to paid close the dealer rate on auto repairs. After getting into a minor fender bender, I brought in my car to see if there was anything wrong with the front wheel that got hit. I told him I got hit by someone and that the other party's insurance was going to pay for it. Without even putting it on a lift to inspect it, he says that it will cost $500 to replace the wheel bearing and the surrounding parts. When I asked him why it costs so much. Ralph says, "Why do you care? Insurance is paying." I went to another mechanic (KR&S) who actually put my car on a lift to inspect it. He says there was no need to change anything with the wheel.
