Chunk o' Funk. Stellar.
Damien S.

Walk in during the apex of summer. Let the air conditioning and supercool display case of candy dipped waffle cones chill you to the core. Take a moment to see that, yes, Chunk o' Funk is on today's menu. Order it - a small is plenty - and watch as that vessel spills over with salted caramel ice cream, Oreo cookie chunks and whole chocolate dipped mini pretzels. Pay your ~$6 for dense, premium ice cream. Take a seat behind the floral cow's udders and bask in the deliciously grippy scenario you painted yourself in to. Go for the first bite. Black out. Return to the now as you're licking sweet trails of formerly frozen bliss off your left hand, as the right rubs the floral cow udder as though it were Milo Buddha's tummy. Because you're lucky. Oh yes, you are. FWIW, I saw nothing but efficient, cordial service from the employees on a quiet Tuesday night. Perhaps the complaints from other reviews are of staffers gone by?

Emack + Bolio's makes some pretty delicious ice cream in a variety of funky flavors. The place reminds me of a Ben and Jerry's or West coast type chain, but they are from the area. Staff was friendly and the AC was at a great level to cool off from the heat. This place is attached to the Residence Inn hotel and there is some meter parking in the area. They are known for their dipped and coated cones. We didn't try them, but they looked good. I had a cake batter ice cream and loved it. There were large chunks of real tasty cake in it. The ice cream itself was dense and sugary with a strong vanilla flavor. The oreo ice cream was even more decadent and was one of the better ice creams I have had in recent memory. Prices were pretty decent too! Check this place out if you have a sweet tooth!

This place was in walking distance to our hotel on our way back from dinner. Not being from town, we had never heard of this place, and asked the chick behind the desk if they had "cookies n cream." Everyone has some kind of version of cookies n cream ice cream. The chick behind the desk, acted like we were bothering her, and then told me they did not. They had peanut butter ice cream with cookies in it.... Ok, so since the customer service was off to a rocky start, we went ahead and read the menu on the board thoroughly, since it was obvious, this chick was not interested in helping us. I did notice on the menu, ice cream called "Cookie monster." Which sounded more like cookies n cream, vanilla ice cream with Oreo chunks and cookie dough. Bingo. Lol. Other than the terrible service. The ice cream was actually really good. The establishment was clean, and the menu options were cute. Pricing was also affordable. And the portion sizes were quite large. I'm not from the area, so don't know if there is another ice cream spot to go to that is nearby the Marriott residence inn on the harbor. I know the next time I am in town, I will probably check elsewhere to satisfy my ice cream cravings and get a little bit better service. Although, it is possible, she was just having an off day. ‍

When I need to get away from my desk at work and treat myself to something for no reason whatsoever, Emack & Bolio's is usually where I accidentally (purposely) end up. I don't know if it's the allure of their baller cones or the unique variety of ice cream offerings, but I somehow find myself here once a week. This locale is a quick walk from my office, conveniently a few steps from the park under the Tobin and right off the Freedom Trail. It's usually fairly quiet, so there's no need to wait in line or hold up a line because you're too overwhelmed to make a decision. For starters, they have these cones that are coated in cereals and sweet treats to cater to the fat kid in all of us. My favorite is the Rice Krispies one. Top that with three scoops of ice cream and you're good to go. My favorites? Grasshopper Pie (minty and chocolatey), Trippin' on Espresso, and Cake Batter. They're all creamy and packed with flavor without tasting too sweet or processed. Honestly, a wonderful treat for any occasion or not occasion.

The name comes from two homeless guys.

They don't stay open until ten. They seem to close whenever they feel like it. Even if they're sitting there and you knock on the door.

The girl inside was very rude and didn't have attention. She ended up giving me the wrong flavor and made it a horrible experience.

Ice cream is okay, nice enough, but why so expensive?! A small Poland Spring water bottle for $3?! Why???

The four of us ordered two ice creams to share: the "Smokey da bear" which was a take on a smore and the expresso coffee ice cream which had a delicious expresso brownie and frosting. Amazing food, so quick yet so tasty. Also two minis were enough to feed us all. They have some available seating with picnic tables and benches, however they were all filled. We ended up sitting on a stairs nearby which was perfect for sharing. In colder weather would definitely take to go as there did not seem to be indoor seating.

Buttercream, cookie dough, brownie batter core, that's only a few of the ingredients on the sundae I chose. Plus I added hot fudge, a mistake but a good one. I couldn't even finish it. DELICIOUS but a lot!! My boyfriend got sweater weather and it was autumn in a cup. Come here if you want an experience, and don't be surprised if you have leftovers or feel sugar high after. Also be prepared to get messy. I've been here twice and it was dripping out of the cup both times. Logistics: order on the tablet or QR code or online before you arrive, pick up at window. No indoor seating, you don't even actually step inside at all, just wait at the window.

We really wanted to give it a try, but every time we stopped by, we ran into some kind of complication. Ultimately, I'd recommend going to a traditional creamery instead, where you can sample flavors, speak directly with a helpful employee, and have your order made the way you want it.

The first time I went, the line was almost out the door. You order from a stationary tablet, where you can customize your order. I've always wanted to try New Zealand-style ice cream, where the berries are mixed in. My order did not disappoint! I went for chocolate mixed with Maine blueberries and matcha with a homemade waffle cone. I saw the staff making these cones. Since I ordered chocolate, I expected the chocolate-berry mix to be brown, but it was a darker purple. The taste was the perfect mix of chocolate and blueberry. It seems like many fruit-flavored ice creams are vanilla-based. Since I enjoy chocolate, a chocolate-based blueberry flavor was refreshing! Happy this place is so close. Will be back on another sunny day!

Having consumed many pastries from San Francisco to Paris, I was intrigued to see how Tatte would stack up. We visited the Tatte near Harvard, and I was immediately charmed by the decor with tiled floors, marble counter tops, and a jumble of unique light fixtures suspended from the ceiling. Even after lunchtime, the bakery was packed, and the pastry case was fully stocked with a variety of croissants, cookies, and other rustic-looking pastries. When I got to the front of the line, I ordered a pistachio croissant. The pistachio croissant was superb - it achieved a crispy exterior yet remained buttery and fluffy on the inside. The filling was just barely sweet with a distinctive pistachio flavor. I would definitely come back to try Tatte's other baked goods (the focaccia also looked delicious) or one of their prepared meals.
