Been searching for a solid bowl of hu tieu kho, which is virtually impossible and nonexistent in NYC. Had Em bookmarked for the longest time, because they seemed to be one of the few places that had it. I can attest that this place absolutely hits the nail on the head. We arrived as soon as they opened and it was rather empty, but customers slowly trickled in. The space is pretty small and tight -- probably fits ~20 people total. We were almost elbow to elbow with the table next to us, but don't let that deter you from a good meal. Service is quite fast, because our food was brought out almost immediately after we ordered. They serve hu tieu wet and dry, but I usually gravitate towards the dry noodle with soup on the side. The hu tieu could use a little more meat and toppings, but overall still a very solid and flavorful bowl with a lot of freshness from the herbs. The broth, served with a hefty chunk of pork bone, was very comforting and I usually like slowly mixing spoonfuls of the broth with my noodles to coat them a little more for flavor. Also ordered cha gio and nem nuong cuon for the table to share. Loved how refreshing the nem nuong cuon was and portion size of the nem nuong. I could've done without the cha gio; it was a bit on the smaller side and didn't really stand out to me much. Overall pretty authentic spot that has answered my calling for a solid bowl of hu tieu that I can't find anywhere else in the city. read more

I've had better Vietnamese food that wasn't as expensive. I feel like they're upcharging for the "beauty" of this restaurant (I can't lie, it's pretty in here). Came here for some warm comforting food after a tiring day of exploring Brooklyn and was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant is pretty small and it was very quiet which was nice. We ordered a bowl of pho as well as a rice dish called Suon Kho and chicken wings to share. The wings were really good! The sauce was very interesting and I enjoyed the sweet and salty combo and they came out pipping hot. The Phi was very clean and easy to eat, would definitely recommend if you are ever at this spot. The rice dish however I did not enjoy as much. The presentation was very cute and the sauce was also done well however the meat just wasn't tender enough. I ordered via DoorDash and everything was packaged well (although I wish they labeled the broth as I ordered two different soups). Note that their DUMBO location has more dishes, but also more expensive. I'd rather pay the long distance fee than the upcharge on the items --I'm talking about $18 vs $13.50 for the Beef Pho. Either way, the food was delicious and homey. I had the Beef Pho ($13.50), Hu Tieu Em ($12), and Banh Mi Dac Biet ($9.50). The pho was classic with a variety of sliced beef and broth was flavorful, definitely my go-to on a cold day or hungover. The Hu Tieu is something I don't usually get, but loved the various toppings that it came with soaked in the clean pork broth. It's refreshing with all the minced up green onions and cilantro, which is nice. Of course, the banh mi was very tasty with layers of meat and fresh veggies. There is a bit overload of the pickled carrots and daikon, but still a delicious banh mi overall. Em is such an affordable Vietnamese restaurant that gives me that delicious, homemade taste. Parking was a bit tricky, but we found a spot in front after a short wait. We're new to the Brooklyn/Bay Ridge area and as pho-loving foodies, my husband and I eyed this place for quite some time before bringing our family of 6 here for dinner one evening. Our server was nice and patient. We asked if they had any soda and they didn't but told us there's a market next door so Hubby went over for some juice boxes and sodas. We both ordered 3 orders of the Pho Bo Em (1 for myself, 1 for my husband who asked for his with a beef rib, and 1 for two of our boys to split) and a Pho Ga for our other two to share, along with an order of the crispy spring rolls. Spring rolls were hot and fresh, and the boys really enjoyed them wrapped up in lettuce leaves with pickled carrot and daikon (I think). I don't normally give out such a low rating because I do my research beforehand AND I try a place twice before really deciding if I don't like it. However, after reading plenty of Yelp reviews of Em and being so hyped up to get our pho fixes, we were really disappointed. I'm not sure if the broth was watered down or if there was a shortage the weeknight we went in (around 5:30-6pm) but we've never had such a plain pho broth in any restaurant before (we've lived in a couple different states and have tried pho joints everywhere we've moved). As a fan of Em's Dumbo location, I knew this OG spot wouldn't disappoint. It's a smaller, no-frills location with a modest menu but the food still hits. Plus at a lower price point! Really can't go wrong with that. I had to get the hu tieu kho ($11 here, $17 in dumbo) which is one of my fave noodle dishes and it was perfect. My bf who had been feeling under the weather got the beef pho ($13 here, $17 in dumbo) and it cured his soul. We also shared a banh mi op la ($8) which is a classic banh mi w/ a fried egg. I'm offended. I was kicked out of the restaurant halfway through my meal because they were closing. The girl never told us we had to get out before their closing time nor tell us upon arrival that it might be a rush to dine in. We would've ordered takeout if we knew in advance. We sat less than 30min. I'll give a timeline. 7:55 pm I arrive requesting a table for two. The girl told me to wait 5min so she can clear out this table with dirty dishes. They had a countertop against the window that I wouldn't have wanted to sit in but would've wanted to be offered to sit there. Then there's two tables full of takeout bags and random restaurant stock that could've equated to 6-8 more seats. Anyway we sat and ordered very soon. We weren't even given utensils or water until after we ordered. I asked for hot tea but she said they only have hot water. Ok but they didn't have enough of that either because I saw her pour some cold lemon water into our cups. The water came out room temp, not even warm. My dad and I each got a main order plus spring rolls to share. The girl took our order without writing it down and had to come back to clarify. It's only three items... 8:11 pm (according to the timestamp from my photo of this) My bahn mi arrives. Dad's pho arrived one minute before mine. We both start eating right away. 8:13 pm Spring roll arrives. 8:16 pm Girl comes up telling us they're closing. I said ok and checked my phone because I couldn't hear if she meant 4min or 14min. If it was 4 then wow they're giving us an advanced warning when the signs say 8:30 close. 8:21 pm Girl comes up again saying they're closed. This time she didn't walk away. I look back at her and asked, "do you want us to pay or do you want us to leave?" She didn't answer my question and just said they're closed and asked if I want to pack my food. At that point I was only 1/3 into my bahn mi. I'm like, "if you want us to leave now then ofc I can't finish. I'll have to pack this." So she proceeded to get our food packed and gave the check. We're annoyed that the girl didn't tell us upon arrival that there's not enough time to sit down and eat. A lot of restaurants tell customers about last order cut off times. Even then they'd let people finish their food. I don't like how we were kicked out because it's not like we were stalling. Upon normal course of eating we'd probably would've left in 10min anyway. Why need to rush us? From telling us to get out to getting us the check and packed food took another 5min. The girl is slow and it looks like she's struggling the manage the tiny restaurant as the only wait staff. During the short time I was there, she only had to deal with 5 customers (2 tables) and 4 takeout order pickups. Everytime someone came in or asked for something, it felt like she had to scramble to finish what was on her hands before scrambling to get to the new request. The only items on our table to be cleared were: one bowl, one basket, two chopsticks, two spoons, two cups, two napkins. This isn't a big burden or hurdle to closing. Our table also had a patch of dried hoisin sauce that wasn't properly wiped before we sat. Ok if the girl wasn't feeling well or it's really not her day or there's some emergency reason to close then I would've been ok to be told so. I don't recall seeing anyone on Yelp comment about their service so idk if it's a one off situation. It came out piping hot but the flavor of the filling to the texture of the wrapper to the flavor of the sauce, none of it tasted good. I guess it was better to get this "deluxe" version with marinated pork. The veggies were bright and fresh. The most important aspect to me was the bread. I've been back at Em quite a few times and I must say, their banh mi's are delicious. In my previous review, I mentioned that they didn't hit the spot as they used to, but they did hit the spot the many times I've been since then! I usually order the original Banh Mi Em and occasionally the Banh Mi Nem when I'm feeling a little more extra. Just beware of the jalapeños, they are still hella spicy! I also tried their Pho Bo (beef pho) for the first time recently and it was amazing. The broth is rich and decadent and the beef is semi-fatty and tender. The short rib was tender and came with quite some meat, but didn't have much flavor (to add this short rib it was an additional $12 or so - kind of pricey). We've gone to other locations that charge around the same price, but give a lot more meat and also have richer broths. The seating is a bit limited at this location if you're looking to dine in. Although the broth is quite clear and unassuming, the first sip of broth is so delicious, flavorful, and comforting. The usual sides are provided (bean sprouts, jalapenos, basil, lime). There's also a little green sauce that packs a peppery punch. Portion size was perfect - I finished the bowl and felt quite satisfied. Generally, I don't try to finish the broth at pho places as they tend to be a bit much after finishing the noodles and whatnot, but I finished everything here! Honest confession - the pho ga impressed me so much that I ordered it again the next day for delivery. I took a sip of the broth straight from the container (without noodles or anything else), and can now say that this is one of my top 5 favorite chicken soups. Definitely will be returning soon! For the drinks - limeade and watermelon coolers are great choices.
