When we first came here last year. We were greeted with the most amazing server. I feel bad we forgot her name. We decided to come back because of the server and she wasn't around so that was fine but the hostess, other servers and food runners were always seemed so annoyed by us every time we came. We tip well, we are polite and still get crappy service. Today was the final straw. The hostess did not want to help us and asked the table cleaner to sit us. We had to request several high chairs because most of their buckles were broken. Server was pretty annoyed so we just got up and walked away. We don't appreciate being treated rudely. Yes I may be deaf and I don't talk much because I just can't hear well so I rely on my fiancé so that doesn't give them the way to treat us like that. It just sucks to see this place go down hill. My fiancé heard them saying "do we really have to serve them". C'on who says something like that. It's just really is disrespectful. If you don't want to be around people, just quit and find a job that doesn't require you to be around people. Food service- you show good attitude regardless if you like them or not. Be kind. Be courteous, be respectful. If you don't have them then don't work at food places. Seriously. That was pretty hurtful to hear that from my fiancé over hearing what the worker said. Took a chance as we passed by here on vacation and we are glad we did. I got the classic German pancake with lemon and butter and the only thing that kept me from eating every bite was my full stomach. It was delicious! Staying up this way for work and passed this place a few times, hunger set in and so I stopped in. Ordered the Prime Rib and not bad! There are so many wonderful places to eat in Salem, why in the world anyone would go here..Just your everyday, standard chain restaurant. .I had a burger which was ok, no better than any other burger, but the hubby had 1/2 of sandwich which he said was the worst he'd ever eaten. I went here once because of my mother-in-law's recommendation. Once was all it took. I should have known better than to trust her taste buds.. Terrible service. The place was empty and the waitress, who clearly had a bad attitude and a chip on her shoulder, spent all her time chatting with the lady up front (a manager?). It was like pulling teeth to get her to even take our orders and then GETTING our orders was almost worse. After waiting nearly an hour we finally got our food and mine was cold, soggy and inedible. My husband's not much better. Being the doormat I am, we just decided to pay and go (in hindsight I really should have refused to pay since I didn't even get to eat..) and when we went up to the register the woman had the audacity to ask us how much GRATUITY we planned to leave! NOT how our service or food was, no apologies for the bad attitudes, dirty looks and lack of, but how much of a tip we planned to leave! I've never been so incensed! So I looked her in the face and said none. I've never seen a face contort with such hate at a customer before. Forget this place. A waste of time, money and energy. Eat somewhere GOOD and friendly--there are no shortage of better places in Salem or the surrounding area. And at least you won't have to hit up a McDonald's afterwards like we did. I had a salad yesterday and it was the worst salad I have ever had at a any restaurant. The lettuce had black slimy spots and was just awful. Really awful salad. Never again. Several months ago this same restaurant had a Canadian bacon omlet that was way over 5 stars. It was a special and was a truly one of a kind and extremly excellent well done omlet. Ice cold restaurant on a rainy day and scrambled eggs chopped up into tiny pieces and cooked into rubber. The hostess' comment was, "Okay, you let them know next time you come in" and the white-haired waitress just said, "Okay, I'll tell them." I had ordered a side of 3 scrambled eggs and they were inedible, but of course I was charged for them anyway. Business must be bad if they're trying to save money by not heating the place and cutting corners by issuing you your 2 jam packets. I think I can see why. I have eaten at this Elmer's many times, but this was a stand-out bad experience. This is the second Elmer's in as many weeks that I have left disgusted. My husband and I were traveling from California to Portland and saw the sign for Elmer's and knew we had to stop for breakfast. I love their German Pancakes and their service is always friendly too. I was in a rush when we left and forgot my credit card. When I realized where I "lost" it I called and was told it was in the safe awaiting my call. They quickly put it in the mail to my home. Make sure you watch your money in the lounge; played keno at the bar and the bartender "lost" the money I initially put down to choose my numbers and play 10 games. When I was finished gambling she the asked me to PAY when I had winnings. Truthfully I think she pocketed the money because she even went so far as to open her drawer and show me she had no bills in it. -- Food is mediocre. Service is horrible. read more

Elmer's is our stopping place for breakfast or lunch between California and Washington. Dave had the Reuben and Fries. I tried a vegetarian skillet meal which was very good. Great place inside. There's Thomas Kinkade art hanging on the walls with unique vintage items above on shelving. They even have a good sized fireplace. If I could give no stars I would. The food was not worth it, taste like a low budget Denny's which is disgusting!!! The coffee tasted dirty like they don't clean the coffee maker. The waitresses are extremely rude, talking badly about paying customers. My child has special needs and the whole time I was there they were making comments and faces. (DO NOT COME HERE IF YOUR CHILD HAS SPECIAL NEEDS AND YOU ARE OUT OF TOWNERS) I felt extremely uncomfortable! If you guys expect silence in a restaurant maybe put a sign up no families allowed. Went in for breakfast, while placing our order the waitress continued to make faces as if she did not approve of our food choices. We smiled and ordered and tried to ignore the rudeness. Ordered an omelet with hash browns, she didn't like that he wanted an English muffin instead of bread. I requested no fruit or potato side with my avocado Benedict & said I would instead like a side of bacon and would be happy to pay extra if there is a charge. She looked at me like I was crazy. Shook her head. Said "well I guess you can" and walked away throwing her hands up. Again, we ignored her and tried to enjoy our morning. When the food came the side of bacon was one single piece. On its own plate. What a joke! The eggs for the eggs Benedict were way over cooked. Avocado was no where near ripe. Tomatoes had no flavor. The omelet was decent with hot sauce on it. Our drinks were never refilled the entire time we were there. When the bill came they charged an extra $.99 for that single piece of bacon. We will not be returning here. The only reason we tried this place is it was on the way out of town and was not busy. Now we know why it wasn't busy and everywhere else was... two stars because it was technically edible and no one got sick. read more

I have been here for breakfast in the past and they have a good selection. There's a fireplace and a country vibe to the place. There's a lounge in the back where people used to be able to smoke. Regardless, it's totally removed from the rest of the restaurant. I am wondering if the other reviewers are talking about the same place. read more

After a long day of driving I showed up at this Elmer's very close to closing. The staff was very welcoming and didn't make us feel like an inconvenience. Despite the late time we were treated well, the food was fresh tasting and our server was attentive while tending to her closing duties. I enjoyed the German Pancake with Marion Berry Syrup while my dining partner had the chowder and beef dip. This is a quick on and off for the I-5 and I will consider stopping here again. read more

me and my husband love this place. The food is always great and the wait staff are super. I enjoy this place because I am actually being served by adults and not 16 yrs old little girls who know nothing about service. When you are first seated the same little man always brings us our water and asks if we want coffee. Then our server is always prompt in coming over. We have never had to wait more than 10 minutes to get served. Folks have to remember this place is really busy on the weekends and those older gals are working their tails off and you won't see them standing around chit chatting like other places in town. They are serving HUGE parties at times so you just have to patient. If you like a retro type Aunt Mae's house look this place is for you. read more

I would give a very high review if there were even one vegan item on the menu, perhaps one item that would be at least easy to make vegan. I understand this is not the type of place to gas a vegan but when family wants to gather at a restaurant it would be nice to have one option for people with special diets. I really love Elmer's! I took my family here for breakfast last weekend for the first time. It was a saturday and even though they were busy we didn't have to wait that long to get a table. Also, the waitress was really friendly and we had no problem getting our orders. The prices are a little high but totally worth it because the food is so GOOD! My son just loved the Big Foot breakfast and my daughter ate all her Cub Cake. I had the pancakes and they were AWESOME! I can't remember what my husband had but he was happy with his order.
