I like this Elmers. I went there for my birthday meal today, April 12, and ordered the fish and chips. It was delicious, three pieces of beer battered cod, a wealth of chips, coleslaw and tartar sauce. I just used the malt vinegar with a smattering of salt. No complaints. read more

We loved it here! Stumbled upon this place driving down to Eugene from Portland. Delicious breakfast and such friendly staff! Our waitress was Tina and she was so pleasant. So IHOP was super busy and we are from out of town we sat down with a table of six and my kids are pretty picky about their food which makes it amazing because everyone loved their dish from the pancakes to the chicken strips, and fries. I was there today at 10am sat at the booth near the restrooms. When I got my German pancake it came out cool temp and the crust was a bit on the burnt side. I told the waitress and she literally argued with me saying it was impossible, I said I'm telling you it's not even room temperature. She again argued with me saying that's impossible with a tone I didn't appreciate at all. I even said I'm going to eat it , I didn't want anything free. Just wanted her to tell the cook. It's been a tick, and I recently was able to go to the Elmer's in Portland again so I thought I would try this location. The difference is stark, same as before, mediocre service. It started initially when we were the only people waiting. About a third of the tables were empty, but we had to wait about 15 minutes before we were seated. Then once we were seated we were told we could not get water and milk for the kids, I recall a day when water was brought out for all, but this was a sticking point. We even offered to pay. In the end the food was OK, and the service improved. The waitstaff is superior to the greeting staff it seems. If you got to many diners you will find this service acceptable. If you go to places with good service like the Elmer's in Portland (Mall 205) you will be disappointed. read more

Elmer's contacted me to let me know that their supplier had run short of Tillamook cheese and they substituted another type of cheddar cheese on our visit. I greatly appreciate their communication to let me know that this was a rare situation. They also generously comp'd our family for this trouble. Ok, I have eaten at this restaurant WAY too many times. Growing up it was our neighborhood pancake house so we went there at least once a week. My dad continues to keep this tradition even though he no longer lives anywhere near the neighborhood. I, on the other hand, have gone back more occasionally but have never been disappointed in my meal. A few years ago our local Rotary clubs needed to find a new place to hold its monthly presidents meeting and after trying out a few other locations we settled on Elmers. They have been more than accommodating for our group. As it is an early morning breakfast meeting and we are serious about not going over time and keeping people from getting on with their days, service is of the utmost importance and they are always very efficient in getting our orders, serving us and getting our checks without us having to stop the flow of the business meeting. They even open a little early for us in the winter months when they alter their hours. The food is always consistent and not over priced. There aren't a lot of frills, but we since that is not we are there for, they are the perfect place for our group to meet. read more

The worst and slowest service I've ever seen. My husband and I have been coming to Elmer's for years now, and the service is usually super quick, the staff friendly and attentive, and the food delicious. Well today, I had just over a half hour before an appointment, so I decided to treat myself to breakfast at the Salem Elmer's. I figured I'd be in and out quickly, like usual. Well, not today. It took my server over 10 minutes just to take my order, and they were not busy, by any means. Meanwhile, a gentleman that walked in 10 minutes after me, and was seated across from me, had his order taken before I did and also received his food another 10 minutes before I received mine. By time I got my food, this gentleman was almost done eating! It was really shocking. Because it took so long for my order to be taken and served, I had to take it to go. I'm not one to usually complain like this, but it was really that unbelievable. I also usually tip very well... needless to say, no tip today. So, I now get to look forward to a cold, mushy breakfast after my appointment. I'll not be returning to this location again. Horrendous. ***UPDATE*** Sure enough, after returning home from my appointment, my breakfast was cold and the to-go container full of condensation. The biscuit was a frigid brick and mushy on the bottom from the moisture in the box, and the hashbrowns, well... cold. Doesn't everyone just love cold hashbrowns? What a waste of 30 minutes and $10. I really hope a manager or the owner reads these reviews, because this was unacceptable service. read more

For my money - the best, most consistent breakfast in town. Farmer's Omelet, Mr Elmer's Omelet - WONDERFUL. German Pancakes - excellent. Chicken Fried Steak - good. We've had lunch and dinner here, as well - and they do a good job with both ... but breakfast is the star here. They have some career servers here who are amazing - service is usually always excellent. The one time we had an issue (we've been eating here for 30+ years), I wrote to the management and they sent me a very nice apology and a $25 gift card. This is a "go-to" place for us. Ordered the Avocado Benedict. It was served with unripe tomato slices on an untoasted English muffin. Avocado was a big chunk instead of sliced. Hash browns were barely cooked. It was advertised as being served with chives on top which were actually green onions. At least the eggs were cooked correctly but it was a waste of money for a meal I barely ate. We eat at Elmers in Beaverton and Hillsboro regularly. This one in Salem is no comparison. Never saw a manager. Asked for a comment card which they didn't have. read more

Three servers, one bartender, AND one manager refused to serve me and my friend alcohol here today. We both are ABOVE 21 and with valid drivers licenses. We are from out of state and they refused to serve us because they didn't know "what a valid SC ID looks like." How is a business going to have a bar and bartender, yet not know what a valid ID looks like or any device (like a black light) to validate an ID? In my opinion, if someone was underage they wouldn't go to 5 different employees (including a manager) to order a beverage if they were underage. On top of the refusal, the staff and management both handled this so poorly and were incredibly disrespectful and unprofessional. With all that being said, we left after about 40 minutes of trying to order a drink and didn't give them our business. We took our business to Toast and Jam and it was probably the best brunch I've ever had AND we got a d*** mimosa! read more

I got the omelette I always get at Elmer's asked for no chicken sausage. It had lots of chicken sausage. It comes with cheese. No cheese at all. Gravy bad. TOSSED IT ALL Asked for a refund for mine only had my receipt even took pics of my order as we were on the road Manager said no. Unless we came there. 85 miles away. Great food and service however the place could use a facelift. Came to Elmer's for a late breakfast. Really late. 1pm. The establishment was a quarter full, we were seated by Beverly almost immediately. The waitress didn't waste anytime, drinks came fast and our order was placed. We both had ordered an omelet. The food came out fast and fresh! They tasted wonderful and I'll be back again for sure. :-) My only suggestion would be is to give this place a facelift. My family and I would come here all the time in the past and even then we noticed little things the waitress would do or say. Always making faces talking to us with so much attitude . We always came back for the food and me the hot chocolate. I tried to go one more time Sunday morning with family. I would like to think our Ethnicity had nothing to do with it but she looked my uncle with disgust any time he'd move to talk to the waitress she acted scared as if he was going to harm her. They messed up our order and kept coming to our table like it was our mistake not theirs asking "you sure you didn't order this? " a few times while looking at us like we're crazy.. We all tried to kill them with kindness and ignore it but it was so hard to be treated as less.. when I got the table they told me they needed me to understand that no one could sit on the ends of the table. I nodded in agreement. And when I looked around every single other table had chairs on the end table... again said nothing. I understand we were alittle bit of a crowd 11 people but no one in my family had the heart to say anything back. Stopped here recently while driving through Salem. Food was great but the service was HORRIBLE. We waited at least 10-15 minutes just to get a cup of coffee. Our waitress kept apologizing for her old-lady memory or something, but it didn't help the service one bit. I had to get up 3 different times and ask our hostess to track down the server for us to get things (maple syrup, ketchup etc) that she said she would bring. By the time they came, our food was cold. That said, I had the Omelet with avocado and chipotle bacon....it was delicious! I'll have to get that at my local Elmers and hope it's as good. I have been forced to eat here twice. Once by my boyfriend, and once by his daughter. What their obsession is with chain diners, I'll never know, but here goes: Staring at the menu, I had no idea what I wanted to order. When we first came here last year. We were greeted with the most amazing server. I feel bad we forgot her name. We decided to come back because of the server and she wasn't around so that was fine but the hostess, other servers and food runners were always seemed so annoyed by us every time we came. We tip well, we are polite and still get crappy service. Today was the final straw. The hostess did not want to help us and asked the table cleaner to sit us. We had to request several high chairs because most of their buckles were broken. Server was pretty annoyed so we just got up and walked away. We don't appreciate being treated rudely. Yes I may be deaf and I don't talk much because I just can't hear well so I rely on my fiancé so that doesn't give them the way to treat us like that. It just sucks to see this place go down hill. My fiancé heard them saying "do we really have to serve them". C'on who says something like that. It's just really is disrespectful. If you don't want to be around people, just quit and find a job that doesn't require you to be around people. Food service- you show good attitude regardless if you like them or not. Be kind. The decor is diner-ish as expected...nothing to write home about either way. The food...well, I hate to use Denny's as a benchmark but it suits this I guess... You will have better food at Denny's. The menu is more ambitious than Denny's but that doesn't mean Elmer's hits the mark...most dishes were neat in concept but substandard in execution. Usually a fan of Elmers (Tacoma location) but our visit while in Salem left something to be desired. Service!!! Not only did we have to wait to be seated (no, they were not busy) and they took extra long to take our order and FOREVER to bring the meal. I mean, really, an omelet taking over 1/2 at 4:30pm on Sunday?!?!? When another server came to see if we need more water, I said how about the food, she replied, OH It will be here shortly, but did not offer to go check on the order.
