This place came highly recommended and was severely disappointing. I was in town for the NHL. It's a 12min walk from the Prudential center. So instead of eating catering, I decided to take an adventure. Let's start off with the grizzly ribs... it was like chewing rubber, they called this place a barbecue they gave me definitely Kraft bbq sauce with their logo on it. Disgusting. The ride was great , the fries were also great. Also there definitely a language barrier please bring Google translate because not one person speaks a drop of English. read more

Elm St Barbeque II - Ribs rice fries family style - Barbeque Near Me - Newark, New Jersey

ALWAYS a solid meal. For $20 for a combo, I can't complain. It comes with rice, fries, ribs, and chicken. There is an area where you can sit down as well as an area where they are making the chicken where you can order to go. When you order the pick up is quick, basically instant. And it's delicious?? You truly can't beat that. Definitely my to go spot when I'm in Newark! read more

Elm St Barbeque II - Barbeque Near Me - Newark, New Jersey

Flavorful Portuguese-style BBQ that you can smell from blocks away with generous portions at affordable prices. The standout grilled chicken, juicy and well-seasoned, pairs perfectly with crispy fries and seasoned rice, often enough for leftovers. A whole chicken with sides costs around $15, and even pricier items like beef short ribs at $25 is a good deal. Fantastic no frills spot delivers great value and flavor, making it a local gem in the ironbound read more

The ribs were very tender, but a bit lacking in flavor on their own. Adding BBQ sauce definitely helps, but if you're not a barbecue-sauce type of person, you'll notice the seasoning is pretty mild. The chicken, on the other hand, was good and tender. I did try the garlic sauce, but that was a miss for me -- it was extremely heavy on vinegar and overpowered the dish. Overall, this place is decent if you're craving barbecue. The rice was flavorful and moist, and the fries were actually great. Not mind-blowing, but solid for a casual BBQ stop. read more

Owner of this restaurant has a big ego. Nasty attitude. Food is good but watch how you talk to your customers Mr big mouth. Never going back nor do I recommend people to go here ever again. Disappointed. read more

Service was excellent and our chicken, rice and fries were very good! Portion was very large. When we come back to Newark, we'll definitely get food from here again. read more

My coworker asked me if I ever tried Portuguese chicken before, and I told him several times when I went to Canada to visit friends. He recommended I try this spot in Newark New jersey. I was very happy we came here. Everything I had was flavorful! I ordered half a chicken with rice and French fries and a side of ribs. The chicken was really, really good! Grilled perfectly and moist. The ribs are also very good! I put some hot sauce on them, and I was offered some garlic sauce, and of course, I said yes. He takes a small bucket out with a huge mop brush. And coats the ribs with garlicky, saucey goodness. What a great meal. The portions are huge here, and the prices are not as expensive as I thought. The rice was seasoned well! I most definitely will be back when in the area again. I highly recommend this restaurant. They have some seating in the back aswell. read more

Spare Ribs ($24) - Portuguese style Ribs with Fries & Seasoned Rice. They gave you so much sides that it's wrapped into a large to-go foil container. This was enough to feed 3 people minimum. The ribs're alright - they're cooked nicely but can use more seasonings. Rice's delicious, definitely recommended as your side. Great bang for your buck! read more

This was our first stop after arriving in Newark, and the enticing smell of BBQ in the air drew us right in. We tried the ribs and T-bone, and both were perfectly seasoned and absolutely delicious. On top of that, the service was friendly and attentive. Definitely a great first meal in town! read more

Another grilled chicken joint in Newark, I'm beginning to believe they're all the same, with the same distributors of the same products. Yeah it's a lot of food for the price, but you really have to like rice and french fries, not really a lot of chicken albeit it being advertised as an entire chicken. read more

Great small local spot in Newark. Do not go if you are looking for a luxurious look or something fancy. Only street parking so can take some time to find. We have gotten lucky both times we have gone. Great service. Quick turnaround on food orders probably because menu is concise. Chicken is delicious! Very flavorful. The ribs also were chef's kiss. Shrimp was good too but I enjoyed the main courses best. The full platters were enough to feed our family of 4 and have a bit leftover. Highly recommend if you are in the area or looking for a new small spot to try! read more

Food is good, service ok. Waitress messed up my order. She did not speak or understand English well.

Food was absolutely delicious. The staff was very friendly. Order before you go pick up. It could be a little wait. There is even a nice little dinning area if you would like to eat there. All around I would def recommend this place. read more

Food is ok. Feel like it used to be better years ago. But overall the food is decent. Chicken is a little dry but not terrible. It's small and quaint and the service is pretty fast even on busy days. read more

The smell of Elm Street reminds me of regret and redemption.... Let me explain! Before my boyfriend and I started dating, he took me to Elm Street and told me "you HAVE to order the ribs. Promise me." Spoiler alert, I did not order the ribs and instead opted for the salmon. I proceeded to spend the rest of the meal picking out bone after bone regretting my decision instantly. Then I tried one of the ribs he ordered and my tastebuds instantly felt the redeeming energy entering my body. But in all seriousness the salmon wasn't bad but there are better ways I want to spend my time instead of picking out bones that is digging into a plate of ribs generously topped with barbecue sauce from Elm Street. It's been a staple for us for 5 years and even longer for my boyfriend! read more

I love coming here as it's truly a hidden gem. Elm street BBQ is in a small street in the ironbound area of Newark, note that the parking in the area is not so good, but the food is very much worth it. The restaurant is nice and small, but has an area in the back for those interested in eating there; most locals always grab to go. The service is quick if they have food ready, the closer it gets to the end of night, the do slow down more as they have to cook everything as you're ordering it. Locals love this place so much that I have shown up 10 minutes before closing time and they are still putting orders together. read more

The food is absolutely spot on , but if your eating in the serving staff is horrible. The lady sat us asked us what we wanted to eat and I looked at her and said ummm you think we can get menus first . They she came and gave place mats and silverware, but she was holding the utensils on the part that actually goes into your mouth . When I'm leaving the lady sitting at the door says how was everything I said you the manager she says ya I said umm your staff is rude and needs training her response was a giggle and nothing else . If they could get people who don't have dirty habits and bad attitudes it would be better . read more

Hello all. First I pride myself on giving truthful reviews. This place is a hidden GEM. The owner is the nicest guy, the staff are welcoming! The staff greeted you with a sincere smile (RARE). The food was amazing, and they did not spew the food sparingly. I ordered Salmon, whole chicken, beef ribs, salad, black beans, and fries. DISCLOSURE****I don't eat pork, so I wasn't able to eat the black bean**** However my co workers told me that they were tony the tiger GREAT.. ELM ST BBQ thank you for the great food, lovely smiling faces and patients...oh yeah and the free Spanish lesson!! LOL read more

The positive. There are big portions. The fries and rice were palatable. The steak on the other hand was inedible. It was a fat patch with little meat. The chicken lacked seasoning. read more

I've been to a ton of Portuguese BBQ places and always order the typical chicken/ribs platter with rice and fries. For the most part all are similar in taste, some have bigger portions, others more juicy. But this place!! This place stands out. I refuse to get Portuguese BBQ anywhere after trying Elm St BBQ. They marinate/cover the meats in some kinda spicy garlicky sauce that makes it stand out and it is so, so good! The servings are very generous, the food is always juicy and fresh. And the prices can't be beat! Their desserts are great too, I love the flan. Def try it out! I always ask for extra spicy and if spice is your thing I recommend you do too. read more

The food are great, very well seasoned and just overall delicious. My usual order are Chicken, Rice and Fries, around $17. The fries are good, not too salty but not too boring. The chicken can be dry but the flavor is so good. They put a lot of rice which is good and the rice is very tasty. The service is also very good, some of the crew member can speak in English and Spanish which is great as it can be welcoming for everyone. Also they are nice, especially the main guy, if you are a regular costumer he actually remembers you and even know what your going to order. Overall, its a great restaurant! Highly recommended! read more

Great food and good portions to feed the family. The chicken is delicious and full of flavor. They don't deliver but it's worth a trip to pick up. The food continues to be excellent. The service was very good. You don't go there for decor.

Really, really delicious ribs. Well seasoned and nicely cooked every time. Tender enough that you can cut them easily with a knife and a half order is pretty huge. Highly recommend both the beef and pork ribs. I've only had the ribs the two or three times I've been here because they are good enough that I'm reluctant to try other things. It's hard to not compare this place to the other various similar options in the area. The only other one I have been to McWhorter barbecue. Both are very delicious but there are differences. I prefer the dining area at Elm St BBQ. That being said, you do get less meet in a half order. It's still plenty though so nothing to complain about. This place also has a much bigger menu including various types of appetizers, shrimp, and fish. I definitely recommend checking this place out, and if you do, trying the ribs. read more

I used to love this place . I do not give them less stars because it is not an option . Got there , placed my order , was sent outside to wait .....because of social distancing . 40 mins later my mame wasn't called although all the people that came after me were . Asked very nicely what the status of my order was , and was met with the most arrogant and disrespectful answer you could spect " if you like something you have to wait " .......never mind it was 100 degrees outside . An hour later I got my order ...... but that is not the best part .... got into my car and felt an itch on my left leg ......guess what I found ????? A big ass bed bug ...... NEVER GOING BACK TO THIS BUG INFESTED PLACE ......YOU CAN KEEP YOUR FILTY CHIKEN AND RIBS ......... you lost a good customer . read more

Came here last week for a meal with a friend of mine end it did not disappoint. This is an unassuming place where most people are taking their food to go but everything is prepared with care and love and it shows. Having grown up in the Ironbound section of Newark I have tried lots of different kinds of Portuguese BBQ and this is one that I still crave. I now live miles away from this establishment but I will (and do) make the drive out for their chicken and ribs. The prices are great for their portions. I have had take out and dine-in several times and don't have any complaints as far as cleanliness, food, taste or service. Family members have also tried their salmon here and recall their pleasure with their meal. I'd have to say the only downer is parking. There are a few spaces in the back, a private garage to the right of the establishment, a few feet before its entrance. However, it is small, limited and tight! But of course if you're familiar with the Ironbound, you would have already known about their serious parking problems. read more

This place is great they give you so much food, The restaurant is not too big or small. The rice and fries are delicious. I got the combo half chicken and half Ribs. I had to take most of it Togo because I was so stuffed. The only thing I did not like is that they give you bread when you first sit down and it was just cold/ room temperature.
