Elizabeth's is an upscale raw / vegan DC restaurant, only open for diners Friday evenings. The rest of the week, they are a catering company. But you can tell that their passion is of the raw / vegan variety. What an outstanding passion it is! Heart and soul, creativity and detail are manifest in each course. Starting with the amuse-bouche of green tomato soup that is concocted with almond milk and yacon creme, kale chips are presented as well for unlimited snacking pleasure. The official starter then is the forest mushroom and asparagus salad. Most impressive was the coconut "bacon" in this course. Amazing - I was "convinced!" Next was the appetizer of "cheese" (really nut) which was truly splendid and at this point I started to become convinced that I could eat raw / vegan far more often with some creativity. Intermezzo divided the dining experience with a mulberry and pink grapefruit sorbet. Now this was served with olive oil, which requires a more sophisticated palate. I appreciate the unusual clever combination here and applaud the risk! Bravo! The next course was the entree of black caviar roll with anise creme. The ingredients here included pearl onion, maca powder, onion, and dill. Heavenly! I ordered a Pinot noir at this point to complement the entree, and it was well-paired with the underlying earthy tones of the course. Last but definitely not least was the dessert - a not so sweet but very satisfying hemp seed cracker and Sunkist Orange mousse with candied pistachio and fresh raspberry. My oh my! That mousse was out of this world. Such a wonderful combination here, and at this point I was quite full! Elizabeth and team were wonderful. The owner and namesake Elizabeth Petty herself walked around and chatted with us, refreshed our kale chips, and gave me some tips for incorporating more raw / vegan into my diet as I had just finished a three day juice cleanse and felt ready to establish a holistically healthy lifestyle. The whole wait staff was so friendly and down to earth, answering any questions we had about the drinks and food. The setting is gorgeous. It can be rented out any day of the week (besides Friday)! Its two floors are romantic and cozy, yet still spacious. Bravo to the venue! read more

I'm not a vegan but I have to say, I think this is one of the most enjoyable dinners out I've had. The food was delicious, the restaurant is beautiful, the staff were amazingly friendly, helpful and intuitive. Then there's the cocktails - superb! Each course was exquisite with wonderful flavours and gorgeous presentation - the vegan caviar is a must. We opted for the wine pairing and found the sommelier to be very helpful and knowledgable. He also recommended some excellent after dinner drinks. The restaurant itself is so carefully designed and beautifully presented from the reception / bar area to the dining room, to the artwork, to the delph and silverware. I look forward to returning to this fabulous restaurant. read more

My first raw dining experience, I was a little scared! It was very difficult to find this place, it's basically a row house, and the sign isn't' very large so keep an eye out. My friend and I met outside to attend EGR's monthly Happy Hour. We were seated at a cozy high-top table for two. I started off with one their signature cocktails, pretty tasty and strong. They were doing a deal that day, one of each of their happy hour appetizers for $50, so we decided to splurge and try it all. We had the: Crab Cakes Ricotta & Fennel Flatbread Fried Rice Fried Oysters Bacon Wrapped Baby Corn White Peach & Jasmine Crisp The standout was the Ricotta & Fennel Flatbread, inventive and quiet tasty. Everything else was decent. I felt the meal was very nut heavy, but I guess that's the protein base in the meal. Overall I enjoyed my first raw experience. I probably will come back again, but will only order a few food items. Having the entire tasting at once for two people was definitely an overkill on raw vegan food :), from a desi girl that very much enjoys her cheese, and spice :). read more

Absolutely amazing food and ambiance! Thoroughly enjoyed every course & actually left full and satisfied (I was not expecting that at all, lol) the only reason this isn't 5 stars is because I got the wine pairing to go with my meal & unfortunately the sommelier was a bit off putting. he literally yelled and cursed at me because I took a sip of wine before he said "sip" really ruined the experience for me & I wasn't prepared for that type of energy at a place like this, but like I said, the food was great. read more

This place is an underrated gem of D.C., and I can't recommend it highly enough. Elizabeth's Gone Raw is a raw food restaurant that basically specializes in blowing your mind in culinary form. Everything is raw, vegan, and as fresh as you can get, meaning it's the polar opposite of most restaurants you'll find in D.C. The interior is a bit weird (it's overly posh and French, in an almost overwhelming sort of way), but you'll likely not care by the time the food comes out. The tasting menu here is fixed for everyone and appears to change often, so, suffice to say, everything you try here will be both tasty and unusual. I'm far from a raw vegan type myself, and even I found a lot to love in their dishes. While their generous use of edible flowers was particularly interesting, my favorite taste was definitely the Kelp Caviar & Creme Fraiche, which was a huge flavor blast that didn't taste vegan (and I mean that in a good way). The kale chips here are also worth note, as they don't even remotely taste like the usual junk you can get from grocery stores - they had a sort of cheesy volume that I didn't expect at all. If you live in D.C., you owe it to yourself to try this place at least once. read more

Great food, drinks, and service. I'd been meaning to check out this place for a while and when I finally was able to experience the seven-course dinner last week, it was as good as I'd expected. We felt welcomed as soon as we entered through the first level where the bar is. I've had drinks there twice now and the bartenders were always knowledgeable and friendly. The kale chips are delicious. I originally thought they were made with cheddar, but then was reminded this was a vegan restaurant. It turned out the seasoning was a combination of nuts and spices - all the better. The dining area is upstairs and is only open for dinners on Fridays. The prix fixe menu seems very reasonable to me, and they make sure to get your dietary restrictions beforehand. The drinks you get at the bar downstairs can also be brought up to the dinner table with no hassle. The cocktail menu isn't long and complicated, but seems carefully curated and seasonal. There was also a nonalcoholic beverage made with watermelon juice and infused with cilantro. Initially I was hesitant to try it due to my strong aversion to cilantro, but the bartender let me have a taste and I could barely smell or taste any hint of it. The drink was very refreshing and with the right amount of earthy kick to it thanks to the herb. The seven courses, along with the kale chips, will fill you up but you'd probably feel less guilty given everything's vegan. The menu changes on a monthly basis now, and I'm excited to return the next time I'm in DC. read more

I booked here for a date night sans kids with my husband. We are omnivores. He admitted halfway through the meal that he'd been dreading eating at a vegan restaurant all week, because he assumed he wouldn't enjoy the food. He is still raving about the experience! We both loved every course. The chef here has mad skills! The food was so beautiful, flavorful, and complex. The best part was, usually after eating a huge meal with many courses, I feel awful and sluggish the rest of the evening. This was not the case here. In addition to feeling great, I had no guilt about what I'd eaten because I knew the ingredients were so fresh and healthy. Exceptional food, service, and overall experience! read more

Excellent food and romantic atmosphere and superb service. In another life, I did 14 years of restaurant business in DC area. Unlike NY or Chicago, DC metro region is dominated with corporate chains and concept stores. I really thought that we had lost the good old fashioned fine dining service in this area until my wife and I walked into Elizabeth Gone Raw last Friday. I was and still am a carnivore. We both completely enjoyed the experience. Kyle, Dan, Phil, Sean, and Elizabeth herself worked to make us feel as especial and important as the food that they so artfully prepared. We were educated, entertained, papered, and deliciously feed. I will only be glad if I had to wait to get a reservation, they are that good, did I mention that I am a carnivore? read more

Went for our anniversary dinner a few weeks ago. Everything was amazing. Our server was friendly and a little silly, which was nice in such a formal setting. I'll start off with the atmosphere. The dining room is beautiful and charming. You walk in to the restaurant and can almost forget that you are in the middle of DC. We both chose to have the wine pairing (which was nice because we didn't have to make decisions on drinks - but the cocktails looked amazing) The entire meal was amazing and an experience that you could only have at EGR. I'm still dreaming about our beet amuse-bouche. As the other reviewers have noted, the kale chips are very good (definitely not your typical kale chip)! We both agreed that the meal was definitely worth the slightly high price tag. Don't let that deter you from an amazing, one-of-a-kind meal. read more

Elizabeth's - Our menu (we kept it through the entire meal so that we could read the descriptions for each course) - Vegan Near Me - Washington, DC, District of Columbia

I have traveled the world for food. Before embarking on the plant-based journey, I had visited many Michelin-starred restaurants. When I found this vegan restaurant--Elizabeth's Gone Raw--that's of tasting menu style (first one I found was in Berlin), I was excited and made a reservation for Father's Day (it's open on Friday evenings only). My parents had been to many vegan restaurants with me, but I was somewhat concerned that they wouldn't really enjoy a *raw* meal. I am not into raw food, but did love almost all the raw dishes at Au Lac in LA. On the day of our reservation, we drove into the city. The garage across the street was expensive and would close within two hours of our arrival... We had to rush through the courses, which wasn't ideal. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were seated briefly at the bar on the first floor where kale chips were served. They were substantial--with quite a lot of nut butter and nutritional yeast I guess. We all liked the chips and asked for more. I make kale chips myself occasionally, but never raw. I asked the bartender who told me theirs were made in dehydrators instead of ovens where they can keep the temperature low--makes sense, just takes much longer time I suppose. Shortly, we were taken to the second floor where the main dining area is. I told our waiter about the garage situation and he said they'd do their best to expedite everything. Soon, our first course came. It was as expected--decorative, tasty, and small portion in a large bowl--green soup and piped cream garnished with veggie leather, microgreens, and edible flowers. Second course was very fruity, but I'm sure they can do better in terms of the colors with summer fruits. Third and fourth were supposed to be the main courses, although we enjoyed both, I think we'd have been a little unsatisfied afterwards had we not eaten so many kale chips. The fifth and last course was the dessert, I think it's obvious even from the picture that it leaves a lot to be desired. During the meal, I saw a woman walking around the dining area slowly and gracefully, checking on every table she passed by. "Could that be Elizabeth herself?" I thought. When she got closer, I asked, and it turned out she was indeed. I told her that I was really excited to finally find a place closer to home that does tasting menus for vegans, but was a bit shocked that she was so stone-faced. I asked her what she's doing with the restaurant if it's only open for 4 hours a week, she said they do catering rest of the week. She didn't seem very friendly or talkative, so I didn't continue the conversation. Perhaps she just had a bad day. read more

The ambiance is gorgeous, with a fitting music selection. The service was very skillful overall, with only a couple very minor missteps, which were probably due to the limited time to practice afforded by the restaurant's two-night schedule. Most courses had a coordinated team of staff delivering and removing plates simultaneously. The dishes were plated beautifully. However, the flavors and textures ranged from memorably delicious and perfectly balanced to merely decent. The empanada entree in particular was texturally disappointing, as the empanada arrived sitting in a bowl of broth. After a palate cleanser and the impressive dishes that preceded it, I expected the 'entree' to be more exciting than a soggy empanada. The chef should consider reducing the broth to a thicker sauce that wouldn't soak the dough. For a fancy vegan restaurant, Elizabeth's Gone Raw exceeded expectations. I would recommend it without hesitation if you are a vegetarian looking for a lovely experience on a special occasion. As an omnivore, I would still recommend it, but given the cost I'm not in a particular rush to go back. read more

This is fine dining that will impress anyone, vegan or otherwise. If you want to enjoy an exceptional culinary experience at one of DC's most special hidden gems, EGR is absolutely the place for it. The inventive flavors, textures, visuals, and marriage of ingredients for every dish are sublime. Funny as it sounds, this is art that you can eat. Where other fine dining spots are so heavily focused on one non-veg iteration after another, rarely accommodating veg eaters with their snobbery if at all, EGR serves as the beacon of hope for the somehow still futuristic concept that vegetables deserve to be the star of the show. EGR skillfully demonstrates how sophisticated a vegan, health conscious, environmentally friendly, and life sustaining diet can be. In my eyes, real culinary inventiveness and skill is tested when attempting to transform and elevate ingredients as humble as plants, vegetables, legumes, seeds, nuts, and fruits into 5-star indulgences. The location is metro accessible, the white table cloth interior is classy and elegant, and the servers are very patient, polite, and friendly. The intimate and dimly lit atmosphere is perfect for a date or special celebration. I saw a full family (teenagers and all) alongside a couple on a date, alongside friends, alongside solo diners, all respectfully enjoying the pre-fixed courses. It is quite heartening to see such a broad spectrum of individuals be able to enjoy vegan cuisine. The best part? The menu changes every month, so you can feasibly indulge in something new every time you visit. The one tricky aspect (or perhaps not really as this is what makes the experience more special) is that they are only open for dinner on Fridays. Plan ahead and book yourself a table. You will not be disappointed. read more

Not actually vegan. not even remotely raw. when you pay 300$ for a meal that is supposed to be raw vegan it makes sense because of the labor and time it takes to prepare. But serving fried mushrooms is just lazy. if you have actually been to fine dining vegan places you will be sorely disappointed. read more

I was really excited when I found Elizabeth's Gone Raw: I love trying new places and my best friend is vegan. It can be tough to find a high-end restaurant that offers more than one item she can eat without 11 modifications. If you're on Yelp looking for a vegan-friendly restaurant -- keep in mind this place is RAW vegan. Just because your friend or date is vegan, doesn't mean this is their dream meal! That being said, it is pretty incredible all of the items they are able to make under the guidelines. For my friend and I, the meal was good, but underwhelming when we considered the price tag ($80/person). We both agreed everything we ate was pretty good, we just were not blown away. There are seven courses for the tasting menu so this is a nightlong event. It is a good amount of food overall (you won't leave hungry) but I felt like all of the servings I enjoyed most were literally bite sized (one bite - and its over!). If you're going and enjoy wine, the wine pairing ($55/person) was a nice addition but is not necessary. We mostly did it because we wanted the full experience and knew we wouldn't know the best wines to compliment our meal. A 20% gratuity is also added automatically - no matter the size of your party. That is typically what I tip and the service here was worth it - but it is worth noting before you make a reservation. read more

On our first night in DC we decided to splurge and make it a special evening . We we arrived wet and hungry after visiting some of the national monuments in the pouring rain . The place was warm and cozy inside. We had a drink at the bar while we waited to be a sat . The cocktail I had was one of the best I've ever tasted . The dinner was superb , each course making us happier . The Sommelier was very sweet and helpful . We really liked him . Elizabeth was very kind and friendly . The chef is a genius ! The sprouted lentil dish that was our main course ,was innovative and delicious. The standout dish was a strawberry/beet sorbet with citrus . A truly inspiring meal. We left feeling happy and satisfied. Besides the mishap with my reservation , everything was perfection . Thank you ! read more

I enjoyed dinner here! The atmosphere is pleasant and the people here are friendly! Of course what drew me here in the first place was the food! The tasting menu rotates on a monthly basis I believe and the theme this month seems to be squash-related, which I love! My favorites are the white asparagus dish, the Australian fig dessert (really unique texture and wonderful presentation), and the squash almond Panna cotta! The desserts are so good!! Please consider a dessert tasting menu for the afternoon or something!! I also appreciate that they have a tea menu for those who don't drink, and you can literally smell your choices:P Looking forward to the November menu!! read more

My wife and I saw this as a well reviewed vegan restaurant and decided to try it out. It is only open one night a week so we were lucky to grab a reservation. From entering the door to leaving the entire experience was amazing. I did the wine pairing with the tasting menu, everything was delicious and extremely thoughtfully prepared. It was a tasting menu of vegan/raw items. We left feeling completely full and happy and loved the creative menu items. Go here and try it. The owner Elizabeth is very nice and came and talked with us and checked on us throughout the meal. my wife is celiac and everything in the tasting menu accommodated her. Outstanding food , amazing service, and great atmosphere!!! Very happy to discover this place!! Will definitely be back!

I had the best experience at Elizabeth's gone raw. It's a fully plant-based upscale dining restaurant. We had a six course meal and a bottle of champagne. I couldn't believe the shrimp looking things had no fish in it. They smelled, tasted, and had the same texture as shrimp. Kind of weird. But I appreciate the artistry. The staff was so accommodating and attentive. They were very accommodating for the Covid situation and the staff was very careful to make sure we were distant from them and others in the restaurant. I called ahead and had them give us an even bigger table than originally asked for because my dad is older and we wanted to stay distant from him. They are more than happy to accommodate this request. The food is very creative and I enjoyed it all. read more

Lovely decor, lovely food presentations. Food is pretty good, but it's pretentious in its presentations. Little bits of things stacked on other little bits of things all arranged in tidy squares. Obscenely expensive. With tip it was $150 a head. Simply not worth it. read more

This restaurant is soooooo amazing. My husband and I love it so much that we had our wedding there. The food is creative and astoundingly delicious, the atmosphere elegant and relaxed, the service attentive and friendly. And Elizabeth herself is so warm and caring. Her personality infuses her restaurant with a magical feeling. Now that the pandemic is here, she is offering takeout and we ordered last week. It was the most lavish and FUN takeout we've ever had! Actually the most lavish and fun meal we've ever had in our home. The food was, as always, superb. Some of the courses required a drop of prep and we loved having this be a participatory experience. Elizabeth even sent her spotify link so we could have the same serene and relaxing background music we enjoy at her restaurant. So fantastic that we are ordering again this weekend! read more

After waiting 25 minutes for a seat (despite a reservation) with no room at the bar and no drinks (eventually they did offer drinks, which took another 10 minutes and weren't comped), I was expecting something better. I love raw food, and I love vegan food. And I also love flavor. Some dishes were ok, but overall the effect was underwhelming, and I left a 7 course, $75 tasting menu still peckish. My non vegetarian friend went to shake shack on the way home. No thanks Elizabeth's, I've had Better. read more

Elizabeth's Gone Raw is a Friday-only set menu raw foods experience with a menu that changes monthly. Yes, it's expensive, but the food and the service are very much worth it. My boyfriend and I went for my birthday and to check it out. The restaurant is in a converted row house with peachy-pink walls and a simple elegance. Our first course was n amuse of watermelon "tartare" with shoyu and wasabe. This was followed by a raw corn "chowder" that was silky and creamy, topped with bits of coconut bacon that had the perfect smoky flavor. (I so want the recipe to this soup!). The next course was a Tomatillo and Papaya "Tabouli" with fennel creme and a bit of spirulina. I think my favorite was the sea flavors with lychee and sea grass. Next came a strawberry-beet sorbet with a bit of salt and some olive oil that served as a palate cleanser. The entree was a beet tagliatelle with edible flowers and a morel "cappuccino". I think this is where the meal went flat. I've had raw vegetable "noodles" before, and a ribbon texture doesn't seem to work the way thin curly noodles or zucchini lasagna would. I'm also not a fan of beets. Finally for dessert, was a white cherry custard with bits of fruit and cucumber/apple chips. The servers also bring out a bowl of raw kale chips for you to snack on between courses. The chips have a zippy flavor from the jalapeno and nutritional yeast, and it's easy to go overboard with them. They will also refill the dish if you want more and scrape away the crumbs between courses. If there's one thing I'd like changed, it would be to have a little less time between courses. Our dinner took about two hours from start to finish. It's better than places that bring your entree while you're still eating your appetizer (which I hate), but there should be a happy medium. That said, I would absolutely come back for a special occasion. read more

When you think of Vegetarian, "Decadence" usually isn't the first word that comes to mind! I currently reside in Southern Maryland, about 60 miles or so south of the Capitol, and about once a month I head into DC by myself or with my carnivore boyfriend for some well needed "City Action." This past weekend, I was solo and had recently read a review about EGR, and thus, wanted to experience this place for myself. Despite only being open (for now) on Friday evenings, I was lucky to get a table due to a cancelled reservation last minute. From your first steps into the building, you know you're going to be for a treat. The first level homes the bar and restrooms. A friendly bartender greets you and offers up a drink, then the host promptly guided me upstairs into the most creative, albeit renaissance-esque room; guessing maybe 30 tables or so. I was seated and promptly greeted by one server, who was a little lax in nature but very sweet, then was greeted by Jose, who took care of me for the remainder of the evening. The 7-course menu was diverse and delicious, and the wine pairing just as dynamic. The sommelier Phil was attentive and so detailed, and offered to e-mail me the menu and wine selections after the evening...he truly went above/beyond. Each course was a delight, and varied from taste and texture to innovation and surprise. Sure, some I preferred over others but the overall experience, combined with the exceptional freshness and creativity was such a treat for this vegetarian, as it rare to come a cross such a place, like Elizabeth's Gone Raw which has elevated Vegetarian/Raw cooking to the next level. The price to experience the 7-course menu is $75 and $55 for the wine pairing, with the gratuity included in the price. I only wish I was with someone as this was truly one of the best dining experiences I've had in a long while! read more

It's pretty but taste wise wasn't on point. Great service, but definitely overrated. Probably a great place for a date but looks may be the only layer of this experience for some people. Elizabeth is a great hostess and a visionary. Her restaurant exceeds all expectations in food and atmosphere. The food is clean, organic, beautiful and good for you. The food was indeed art... in the sense that it is not meant to be eaten. It is almost a crime to serve such terrible food. We were so depressed throughout the entire meal. It completely ruined my friend's birthday. I sincerely doubt if anyone in this restaurant actually tried the food before serving it, because if they even had half the sense a normal human being would have they wouldn't serve this kind of food. The "kale chips" were salty enough to give us a kidney disease. The "caramelized parsnip cup" was the highlight of the dinner, despite it being a single bite and mediocre-tasting at best. The "chilled white corn soup" should have been microwaved. I could have eaten "Salt of the Earth" by going outside and grabbing a handful of grass and shoving down my throat. Instead of serving this in a restaurant, they should put it in a museum so that it can only be looked at. The "kiss limon melon sorbet" was almost therapeutic for the trauma that we just went through. Honestly, if they messed up a sorbet, then this place should be shut down for food code violations. The "crispy okra & hickory glazed vine ripened tomatoes" was the only actual food that they served tonight. It returned our hope in humanity and made us start believing in God again. Though it was certainly not good enough to redeem the rest of the meal. The "birch sap ice cream" should have just been used as soap, because it tasted and looked like soap. The only redeemable aspect of the dessert was its coconut sugar tuile (though it tasted slightly burnt and as thin as my patience for this place). The dinner was so exhausting. We are so glad that we won't ever have to come here again. People should be paid to eat this kind of stuff. I could see the expressions of the other customers slowly darkening as the night went on. The restaurant setup was pretty, though. And the waiter was sooo nice. read more

I think this was a nice place to go! It wasn't too loud, the service is very quick, and everyone who works there is really attentive. They were also very nice giving me a card and candle as I was there for my birthday. The food was good, too. There were quite a few things I really liked from the menu (fall season), and it truly is impressive how creative each dish is. Would I find myself craving a lot of the food I had there or be dying to get it again (not even considering price)? No, but I think it is a really fun dining experience and was nice to have a different culinary experience with new textures and tastes. read more

I really really wanted to love this restaurant but unfortunately this was not the case. This wasn't do to some rude service or anything that was a one time thing. It simply came down to the food being sub par. All 7 dishes for both my wife and I were sub par. She's a vegetarian and I'm partial. Believe me there are some great vegan food options, but this wasn't it. Out total bill for the two of us was $250. Which would be fine if the food was amazing. But sorry it was no where near worth it. We both went to pret-a manger after and got a falafel wrap for 10 bucks that was better than all 7 courses combined. Another thing I want to mention is that we had to wait for about 25 mins even with making a reservation. And also we had to wait along long time after each meal, sometimes like 20 mins. BUT these were not the reason for the poor rating. Again it was due to food. The dishes looked very pretty but tasted the opposite of their beauty. read more

Attention DC residents and visitors: it is officially possible to have an impeccable, GUILT-FREE coursed meal with perfect wine parings. Elizabeth's Gone Raw is one-of-a-kind and unblinkingly above the foodie trends, from the thoughtful preparation of high-quality ingredients to the elegant decor. The ladylike peachy pink color scheme with low, caramel lighting gives a sense of occasion, and my group of three was there for three hours. I don't think this was intentional, but the meal was also low-carb aside from some bread on the table. The flavors were complex but not over-the-top so gauge your expectations; the kitchen really lets the natural zing, zest and juiciness of the veggies sing, and aside from cashew cheese does not try to recreate meaty flavors or textures. I took this to be a plus, and maintain that non-vegetarians will love Elizabeth's, too. I encourage you to try the kickass, herby cocktails and talk to the staff about the food and wine! Enjoy! read more
