Called CJ's and spoke to Cecil. He said he could replace the starter today (first miracle) and gave us options on price. When we arrived they dropped everything to work on our truck. About 30 minutes later the truck is running. Cecil came in and said it was just a couple of the bolts holding the starter on that came out. He replaced them and $56 later we are on the road. Even gave us a military discount. We highly recommend CJ's! They not only accommodated us by working on us right away, but also did only what was needed. Our truck was making very odd noises coming from the back end. We were half way home, creturning…read morefrom Chicago to the Seattle, WA, area. Did not want to lose additional days getting home. Mark's Auto got us in within minutes after I called. They immediately took it for a test drive, and diagnosed the problem shortly thereafter. Turns out a rear end seal was leaking, causing the truck rear end to slightly lower itself, allowing the heat shield to clang and bang on the drive shaft. They resolved the issue and discovered that the front end 4 wheel drive was not properly activating itself due to a faulty vacuum issue, and they resolved that as well. I was out by 10:00 am and on our way. I want to thank Dan for taking his time to explain the issues so I had full understanding of what was malfunctioning. Can't ask for more than that! I looked for a mechanic that worked on Volvos, and I found Thomas Auto Service. They were great! They were able to get me in that day, a Friday, diagnosis the problem, and get me running again. They did not have one of the computer chips on hand and could not get it till Monday - it was a Friday afternoon mind you - but they fixed me up enough, let me know what warning lights would stay on, and got me on my way. I feel I was treated very fairly and honestly. As an out of towner, who would probably never be back again, you worry about being taken advantage of by an unscrupulous mechanic. That was not the case here, at all. They were very honest, and the prices were very good (less than I was expecting, honestly), and it was quality work that allowed me to continue on my journey that day. Labor estimate was $500 BUT they were "unable" to tell me what type of flywheel I would need. Somehow their computer couldnt look up what parts they would need to make the repair so my quote was an open ended $1200. They said they wouldnt know until they pulled the transmission....REALLY? Are people that dumb? Sure, let me leave you my car, NOT knowing how much you really intend to rip me off because you "dont know" I seriously hope no one is that naive.
